Tried the nigiri and sushi here for the first time and I would give 10/10 stars! The yellowtail was absolutely perfect and miso was yummy too! I had a super kind waitress and the whole restaurant had that feel good, bustling but in a calm, quiet way that was really nice. I really enjoyed this delicious takeout as I was headed out of town for an appointment! My steak was cooked very well and the vegetables and rice were delicious. I hate when takeout food is super heavy and it's so nice to be able to have a vegetable option with good protein. I needed more Yum Yum sauce, so I had to go back in before I left, but otherwise everything was great! It wasn't busy around 11 AM on a rainy Monday. I highly recommend this delicious hibachi food. The wife and I got away for lunch. We were there just before noon and were the first of a big lunch time rush. The service was great though with a nice young lady, checked up on us and refilled drinks. The food was pretty solid, our new favorite was probably the saucy boi- lots of flavor and slight kick. 616 is a deep fried one my wife liked and I liked the layers of the cosmo (it does have a lot of pepper flavor). The playboy was alright, kinda bland beside the sauce on top so might switch that one out next time. But overall excellent place to go for rolls! read more

The food we got here was incredible, Ive never used this term to describe food but it was orgasmic. The Fancy Bacon special roll was fantastic, along with the six one six, miso soup, and fried rice. We will definitely be coming back because I was torn between the fancy bacon and the bumblebee role and I can't wait to try that one. I highly recommend going here for a bite to eat! I figured it would be a good experience being that they were packed on a random Wednesday. Went for my son's birthday since he chose sushi for his birthday meal. I don't care for seafood. So I ordered the teriyaki beef. It was as delicious as it looks. Tender, juicy, and just the right amount of teriyaki sauce. Better than some actual steakhouse steaks. My son really liked the eel. Not a phrase I thought I'd ever say. He even ate the radish flower. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. As was the other staff. This is the only other sushi I've had in GR that compares Ginza's price and quality. The temperature of the fish was great and the flavors of the fish really came through. I ordered the chirashi ($24), sushi and sashimi combo ($30), and a salmon avocado roll. It came with 2 miso soups and 2 salads with a peanut ginger-y dressing - tasty! I think the sushi and sashimi combo for $30 was a good deal. My only criticism would be somewhat inconsistent cut sizes on the sashimi. Dined early on a week day. Not busy, sat quickly! Server very friendly. Lots of people picking up to-go orders. We both ordered Hibachi Dinners due to the cold weather. Standard Miso soup and wonderful salad! The peanut ginger salad dressing is so good and plentiful that I wanted more lettuce! Wow! We ordered Shrimp Tempera Appetizer and dunked it into that salad dressing, yum! My Scallop & Shrimp dinner was good but nothing spectacular. Scallops cooked perfectly and shrimp over cooked, I would have appreciated a knife. Great vegetable variety, too. Husband enjoyed his Steak & Shrimp so much that he cleared his plate. My wife had the Vegetable Hibachi with Fried Rice. Normally, when we have a Hibachi meal, it comes out steaming hot off the grill. This hibachi was lukewarm at best. Even the fried rice came out cold. Not pleasant. I had vegetarian sushi. It was "ok". It wasn't bad, and it wasn't good. It was just "ok". The interior was nice and inviting. Service was good. A new friend and I decided to go out for sushi recently and came across this little gem. This location was a Crankers the last time I came through and I have to say, I love the new place! The service was phenomenal!! I'm ashamed to say I can't remember her name because I normally like to give a shout out but she was fast, knowledgeable, personable, and very patient. Service gets 5 stars. We started our meal with the avocado salad which came with a peanut dressing and was honestly the just scrumptious! You have to try this! The sushi we enjoyed was basically spicy tuna and salmon 3 ways and all the ways were so very tasty! We opted not to get the caviar on top of one because it was just a bit too fishy but that's really a matter of brand. We finished our meal with a Japanese rendition of deep fried ice cream which was basically matcha ice cream deep fried in tempura batter. I didn't care for the texture of the tempura batter around the ice cream but the ice cream was yummy. Food freshness and quality gains 5 stars. The ambiance was intimate and the restaurant clean as far as I could see. So ambiance and cleanliness also pulls in 5 stars each. This gives this location 5 stars!! This is one of my new favorite sushi spots! The weather last night was lovely so we grabbed seats on their patio. Our waitress was attentive and sweet and we ordered a few apps and a bunch of sushi rolls. We did have our orders come out on the wrong plates or with multiple people's food plated together, but it was alright.. sushi is an easy share. Favorite App: Secret Weapon Shrimp... omg if you're a tempura shrimp fan you will LOVE them, they were amazing. Our favorite rolls: The Estrella & The Tom-Sushi Every sushi roll was beautifully presented with all kinds of goodies on top averaging $13-$14/roll. It's so great to see more Japanese restaurants opening in Grand Rapids, especially in the suburbs. Umi Sushi & Grill opened in December 2019 and they're doing a great job with their service, quality of food, and presentation. I dined in with two other friends last night and we had a great experience. Umi's menu is huge so if you like to eat with a larger group of friends, I definitely would recommend doing that so you can share and try a bit of everything. We started off our meal with a tasty complimentary starter which was crab stick and cream cheese covered in tempura. Then we shared the Grilled Ika as an appetizer. Let me tell you, this was flavored and cooked to perfection. We also noticed they offer Hamachi Kama which I'm hoping to try during my next visit because you don't really see this in West Michigan. For those who haven't had hamachi before, it's quite tasty. For my meal, I ordered a Sweet Potato Roll and a Spicy Tuna Hand Roll. Both were pretty good. The Spicy Tuna Roll had a ton of tuna but it needed a little more rice to balance the amount of tuna. Believe me though; I'm not complaining with the amount of tuna that was given, it was very generous. Not on the menu is Boba Milk Tea that's priced at $4.75. The flavor of the milk tea is good (and I think they use real milk) but they could use a little more work on the boba. The boba was flavored well but half of my boba was soft and the other half was a little hard. It was still pretty good though overall though. After a pleasant first experience, I'm definitely returning to try more! read more

Overall Umi Sushi & Grill was a pretty decent sushi spot. The seaweed salad was quite good. And there was a good variety of rolls many of which did not have cream cheese. Yay! I'll never understand the Midwest's preoccupation with cream cheese in rolls. The Nigiri selection was ok, but I wish there were some more exotic selections, such as sea urchin, fatty tuna, giant clam, etc. At least the sweet shrimp came with nicely deep fried and tasty heads. I thought there was a little too much rice with the Nigiri but I guess that's a personal preference. The service was good and bad. Our initial order of drinks, apps, and sushi was fine. But our second order of drinks took way too long. And the table next to us went uncleared for the entire time we were there. That's just unacceptable, especially considering the restaurant wasn't crowded. All things considered, it was ok. But I'm still looking for a goto sushi place in the Grand Rapids and Holland area. read more

However the teriyaki salmon we got were cooked a little too long and dry. Sushi is reasonably priced and good. This place ranks higher than most GR sushi joints but won't be joining my rotation. GF and I stopped in prior going to a local concert I grabbed the chicken katsu and she did sushi Walked in and it was pretty empty after 4pm, a few tables were full of dishes but these were cleared up about 5-10min later, floors were cleaned no food. The waitress was very nice and tentative to us The chicken katsu was a PLATER for a king!! Sooo much chicken and a nice amount of rice and a few sauce sides. The chicken was nicely cooked no oil tastes and very fresh overall. We both split a it and still had leftovers My GF said her Godzilla Sushi was very good! I'd love to know what the restaurant was previously, it was converted from a fast food restaurant, still has the has the side window and pole from the outdoor menu.
