Umi Sushi offers a delightful Japanese dining experience featuring fresh sushi, creative specialty rolls, and classic Japanese entrees, attentive friendly service, and a cozy, welcoming ambiance

Left to right: 5 wishes, spoons, baby got back

We used to come here all the time but slowed down when the new management took our favorite items off the menu. We tried to come back a couple times but just can't seem to find something we like as much. The rolls we got for dinner were good: 5 wishes, spoons, baby got back. The chefs always do a great job with whatever they make! Our server was wonderful. The ambiance is a little too eclectic these days. They still had garland up from 4th of July making the space feel a little cheap. Good experience overall, but something was still missing.

I would only return for their take out but the sushi was overpriced. I initially dined in and it took 40 minutes for my order to arrive. There was greater emphasis on take out orders at the cost of the dine in experience. Our server barely checked in on us and tables remained uncleared for long periods of time. *Miso Soup: very hot. There wasn't much incorporated into the soup and I wished there were more toppings. *Yellowtail Lover: the nigiri were neatly made while the roll had more variation. The yellowtail was slightly fatty with natural sweetness. It paired well with the sour sushi rice. The texture of the rice and rice to fish ratio were good. *Tuna Lover: similar comments except the tuna was leaner and fishier. This helped me appreciate the rice and seaweed more as they distracted me from the fishiness. My take out experience fared better and it took about 20 minutes to complete. However, I find the amount of food received for $21+ to be a bit underwhelming. The fish quality wasn't exceptional yet the price tag seems to exceed normal sushi pricing. Overall 2.5 stars rounded up because of the great sushi rice.

This place used to be one of my Favorite places, but the food has just lacked flavor the last few times I've been here. The service is alright as well. The food was still served fast, but wasn't the best. The chicken was also a bit dry.

This spot has some of the best sushi we have ever had. Not to mention the baked muscles...omg literally amazing. We love coming to Umi when we have appointments downtown. Their service is wonderful and the sushi is even better

    Spoons and crab rangoons

It was my boyfriend's and I first time at this spot. The girl at the front and our server were both super nice. Our server was informative which helped us decide what to order. We got the crab rangoons, jalapeño bomb, green jacket roll, beef udon, and salmon spoons. My favorite was the spoons, sooo bomb and I love that it came with Thai chilis since I like spicy. My boyfriend's favorite was the jalapeño bomb. The restaurant is a decent size and had a movie playing. Super solid sushi spot, I would definitely recommend it!

Not a local reviewing! I'm unaware if Fresno has a sushi scene, but as a visitor to Fresno, who is always fiending for sushi, this spot was solid. I sat outside and enjoyed the patio and went with the lunch special that came with a soup or salad. I went with the salad, and it was quite large and the top was drenched in dressing, while the bottom was dry. It was fine. The California roll was filling, and the 4 pieces of sushi were solid. It tasted fresh enough, and I was quite stuffed. They had fancy rolls ranging from the regular style ones, to fancy ones, to cooked ones. While I didn't partake, I'd probably go that route next time. Prices were higher than I expected, if I'm being honest. They were on par with Bay Area prices. Ambiance and service was very casual. Also, soda is from the fountain, not canned. Overall, solid sushi for the area.

I haven't been here in a while! I wished they had another location that opened on the weekends. I feel like not enough people are able to experience this goodness! Tiger roll: a great introduction roll, after the California. Not complaints. Very delicious (5/5) Spoon special: so good. This was my favorite. It's spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado wrapped in salmon in a ponzu sauce(umami, sweet, tangy sauce) it melted in my mouth. (5/5) Philadelphia roll: I know it's controversial having cream cheese in sushi but I love it. It adds a nice creaminess. But this was your standard Philly roll. Good. (5/5) House salad: usually when you go to sushi spots they give a salad with a ginger dressing but here they give this creamy dressing. This was so tasty I ordered two extra side salads to take home with me. With extra sauce. That sauce makes it. The dressing was a bit oniony, sweet, creamy. I loved it. Service was fast. They had three servers working the floor. Food came out fairly fast. It was almost a full house. (Lunch rush) but they did not disappoint.

I ordered a sake roll to go and the salmon was pretty fresh! However the reason I'm giving this place a 2 star review is because the customer service was incredibly rude. I walked by at 1:35 pm since I was staying at the convention center hotel and it was the one of the only place that was that was still stated it was open at 2:30 pm. When I got there, the sign had been flipped closed. Somebody walked out and I asked, "Oh is this place closed?" And the man who was leaving said "it's still open." So I proceeded to walk in. The male server asked how he could help and I said table for 1. One of the other servers proceeded to say that they were actually closed. I told them their sign still said open til 2:30 pm. That server proceeded to say dine in closes at 1:30 pm. I was fine taking the food to go so I asked if I could place a to go order. The staff looked heavily annoyed and then asked one of the managers who then said it was still open for to go orders. I already felt uncomfortable so I ordered one roll so it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience as I could already tell I was annoying them. As I was ordering, the person at cash register continued to shake their head as I was ordering. I waited for my meal and I hear them tell the kitchen she only ordered one roll. Someone comes from the kitchen looking out the window, passively saying "we close at 1:30." I quickly took my food and left to eat outside. TLDR; don't come here past 1 pm for lunch.

3.5 stars Much better now, with the extended sushi counter side. Our waiter was friendly and funny and the new decor is simple and nice. My sushi roll was good and my co workers all enjoyed their items as well.

The fish is fresh and good as usual. Ordered take out this day. The restaurant barely opened for lunch, it was clean with people coming in and out. I was talking to one of the employees a bit while waiting, nice young man.

We had dinner here on a Thursday before a show at the Saroyan and it was great! The service was fantastic. Everyone was so kind, and we were greeted by every employee when we came in and each of them said goodbye and thank you as we left. This is a casual restaurant, but it was very clean (even the bathrooms). We had four different sushi rolls, vegetable gyoza, and miso soup. The miso soup was good, but maybe a tiny bit bland. The gyoza were delicious, nice and crispy. Gyoza typically comes with a vinegar soy sauce, but these ones came with a sweet sauce. The sweetness threw off the taste a bit, but they were good overall. My favorite roll was the Booty Shake Roll, the combination with the cream cheese was delicious. I also really enjoyed the Oh Suzanne roll, it was very fresh and light and the ponzu sauce was delicious. We also tried the Hot Mess Roll, which was spicier than I expected. Finally we had the Bulldog roll, which was pretty good. Overall this was a great place for a more laid-back sushi meal!

    Chicken Udon loaded with ingredients

Came in for a late lunch to miss the normal lunch crowd as Umi does get busy during the prime lunch hour as this is a small place inside. There is outdoor seating with umbrellas and large trees for shade. We started off with Garlic Edamame and flavor is good. I started with Tako Sunomono. Tako was fresh and not rubbery as it could if it's old the octopus is chewy and rubbery. This wasn't- fresh and crunchy over cucumber and lettuce. I had the Hamachi Collar Special menu that comes with miso soup (miso soup here is loaded with tofu- not skimpy, and seaweed) It also comes with a side salad that is on the plate but also a big bowl of salad! I gave the bowl of salad to my Brother as it is more than enough. The dressing Umi uses is flavorful and creamy. The Hamachi Collar is a large piece and the dipping sauce is flavorful. My Brother ordered the Chicken Udon that was flavorful and many pieces of chicken topped off with kamaboko. To get our "Fresh fish" fix we ordered the (It's off of the menu so you need to ask for it) Spoon Chef's Special!! This is something you need to try! It has spicy tuna on the bottom, a white fish, and salmon wrapped around cucumber slices in a sauce! Nice flavor if your looking for something without the rice! Overall a nice experience in Downtown Fresno, CA!!

There are a few things we plan to go back and try though. Based on his recommendation we tried the scallop temaki and it was delicious but we still really want to try the scallop spoons. Everyone talked about the sushi so we tried the house Iza Sake roll, it was good but honestly didn't blow us away. So many reviews told us to splurge on the Wagu A-5 hot rock lettuce wraps. It was fun to have them cooked in front of us and the meat was buttery, I would say to save your money. Let them cook your fried rice in front of you for the ambiance and you get more for less money. It also has Wagu beef. We also tried the bone marrow and we liked it but I do believe it's an acquired taste. We had two mixed drinks the Hibiscus Shoga, very good, but a bit too sweet. Then the Kohahu Carmel Old Fashioned which was a recommendation and we love old fashions. This was good but way too sweet for us. I do recommend the Kurosawa Nigori. We plan to return to try the spoons and seafood risotto and maybe the lobster temaki. Also recommend going earlier than later. We had an 8pm reservation and the grill was cleaned at 9pm so it was a surprise to have the kitchen closed so early.

When it was time to get some food the next day, my daughter wanted to come here. It was a very hot day so my wife stayed home. It was just the kids and I. Walking in, I was curious to know how much the place changed since Tiger Bite Bowls closed. Not a whole lot really. The interior is very simple. Like a pho restaurant. We sat and looked at the menu. I know Teriyaki bowl is in the name, but I didn't see any bowls on the menu....not that I wanted one. Just an observation. Essentially the options are plates and sushi, so we did 2 of each, and later took a dragon roll home. Coming inside, it was initially welcomed because of how hot it was outside. But as our bodies began to cool down, I started to notice that it was a little warm in the restaurant too. It wasn't hot, but clearly they were concerned with their PG&E bill. I think one of the younger workers who arrived later noticed it too, because after they got there, the room temperature went down to a comfortable level again. As for the food, I was telling my daughter that it's too bad we didn't find Miso Hungry that day we were on the hunt for fried rice. Instead we had that horrible restaurant in Clovis. I think the only thing missing was the show you normally get with a tepanyaki restaurant. Was the good at the level of Hino Oisi or Edo-ya? Not quite, but it was still good. I like my fried rice a bit more crispy. The sweet and spicy sauce was an added bonus. Goes great on the fried rice! On everything really. Be sure to ask for some. As is always the case, one sushi roll isn't enough to fill a person up, so my son and daughter were still a little hungry. This is universal so no knock on Miso. I had my fill with my chicken plate and was able to share. I think the surprise was my son getting the salmon plate. So why only 3 stars? It's a hole in the wall, as evidenced by the fact that the restroom is out back in the alley, a few doors down. Nothing against a restaurant being a hole in the wall, but for $100 for 5 plates, no drinks, the food better be great, not just good. I feel like Miso is this areas version of Teriyaki Don, except Teriyaki Don is cheaper, with more options. I'm sure we will be back. Hopefully by then the menu will have expanded to include Teriyaki bowls or something

Known for its customizable ramen bowls with flavorful broths and a wide variety of toppings, as well as, other menu items like rice bowls, bentos, and dumplings, Tsuchiya Ramen definitely lived up to it's almost 5 star Yelp reviews. The waitress was friendly and the food came out fairly quickly once our order was taken ~ less than 10 mins for sure! I ordered the spicy miso ramen ($17.99) with a sweet corn side (+$1.50) and complimentary topping of the fried garlic. The hakata (thin style noodles) were perfectly cooked, with a lil al dente bit to them. It had all the trimmings that I like ~ green onion, chashu, jammy egg, crunchy wood ear mushrooms, naruto fish cake, marinated bamboo, and nori. The broth was authentic, flavored with such depth. You can really taste the slow-cooked, miso quality in it. I loved the fried garlicky taste too! It was the right level of spice, I didn't even need to add any chili oil, like I usually do. My picky daughter opt'd for the "make your own ramen" option (starting at $12.99) ~ getting the same hakata thin noodle with tonkatsu broth, chashu (+$3.25), fried tofu (+$2.50), and freebie toppings of nori, sesame seeds & fried garlic. My son ordered the OG tonkatsu ramen w/ extra marinated bamboo (+$2) on the side. Lastly, the hubs wanted to eat lighter & healthier, so he opt'd for the teriyaki chicken rice bowl. Everyone loved their meal pick. Dare I say..I even think it ranks better than some of the ramen joints in the OC. Who knew Fresno was poppin' in the foodie dept? Lol A total RxFoodie recommend and I'd return if I'm ever in the area again!

The drinks were made immediately while the food took some time to arrive. Although the drinks came quickly, I wish my coconut rim had been applied more evenly. *Poke Nachos: these had a tropical flair with the chopped mango. The dish was covered in a thick layer of honey wasabi spicy mayo and it definitely cleared my sinuses. However, the tuna was finely chopped and sparse throughout the dish. The wonton chips were also on the greasier side and appeared darkened from unclean oil. *Strawberry Blush: a confusing mix that leaned heavier on the gin and lychee. The strawberry and lemon were practically nonexistent. I did enjoy the coconut rim, although it only lightly covered the glass. *Salmon Roll: despite being on the happy hour menu, I was surprised to see it still nearing $11. However, I enjoyed the quality and the thick cut of salmon. It was a well filled and nicely shaped roll. While the staff seemed pleasant, I was underwhelmed by the overall quality of the dishes and drinks. The cocktail was not weak as others mentioned, but the flavors felt different from those listed on the menu. The happy hour prices were also not very competitive compared with other restaurants. I would have preferred fresher seafood and better portions.
