They're downtown, I'm in Fig Garden. Picture painted? They are closed on the weekends (good for them, not us). I really enjoyed the food in this establishment each time (3) that I've been here... however, this last visit was probably the "worst" of the prior visits (service-wise). The wait for our food was verrrrrry long, our waitress never bothered to check on us or do any refills-- she was more focused on getting her closing shift duties done. I'm all about that-- but I'm damn good at multi-tasking so... idk. Another lady had to pick up her slack but only when we were done eating were we then offered more water (my glass was empty for a while). Our waitress came to give us our check though, ha. My first time here (which I'll have pics of food from that visit as well) was remarkable... like, amazing. Food, service, and all. Might have been with the right crowd, at the right time though... I'd say. They knew exactly what to order too-- all I wanted for sure was the Salmon Spoons (delish). I can't name everything in all the photos I will be attaching except for the goods in my most recent visit. The food has been consistently good... I have no complaints in that department whatsoever. Service, meh. There's very limited space in here as well... not too many tables inside. I felt like we were very close to the other tables. I do believe I remember them serving tables outside as well? I could be wrong. If it was on the food alone, they'd be a 4-5. But, with the inconsistencies with service... 3-4. Came with a group of friends for lunch. Our server Tina was great! We loved her service. My main issue is with the person that 'greeted' us in the front. She's the younger gal with the pixie haircut, wears glasses, and wore a bandana over her head on that day. I really did not appreciate the immediate attitude when I've told her the first time that we are dining in for x amount of people. Mind you, her back is faced towards my group almost the entire time until she had to repeat herself saying to choose a table and the server will be right with us. Not sure if she had a bad day, but regardless you shouldn't be projecting your sour mood onto others. It takes legit under less than a minute to acknowledge your patrons with a greeting. We used to come here all the time but slowed down when the new management took our favorite items off the menu. We tried to come back a couple times but just can't seem to find something we like as much. The rolls we got for dinner were good: 5 wishes, spoons, baby got back. The chefs always do a great job with whatever they make! Our server was wonderful. The ambiance is a little too eclectic these days. It was my boyfriend's and I first time at this spot. The girl at the front and our server were both super nice. Our server was informative which helped us decide what to order. We got the crab rangoons, jalapeño bomb, green jacket roll, beef udon, and salmon spoons. My favorite was the spoons, sooo bomb and I love that it came with Thai chilis since I like spicy. I would only return for their take out but the sushi was overpriced. I initially dined in and it took 40 minutes for my order to arrive. There was greater emphasis on take out orders at the cost of the dine in experience. Our server barely checked in on us and tables remained uncleared for long periods of time. *Miso Soup: very hot. There wasn't much incorporated into the soup and I wished there were more toppings. *Yellowtail Lover: the nigiri were neatly made while the roll had more variation. The yellowtail was slightly fatty with natural sweetness. It paired well with the sour sushi rice. The texture of the rice and rice to fish ratio were good. *Tuna Lover: similar comments except the tuna was leaner and fishier. This helped me appreciate the rice and seaweed more as they distracted me from the fishiness. My take out experience fared better and it took about 20 minutes to complete. However, I find the amount of food received for $21+ to be a bit underwhelming. The fish quality wasn't exceptional yet the price tag seems to exceed normal sushi pricing. I used to love this place, started going here in 2020 and over the years I get the same thing, the beef bento box. Every time in the past year ordering from them I have gotten terrible quality of meat. it used to be a nice amount of flank steak with a lovely teriyaki sauce. Now it's dry round beef and w smaller portion. That is a big difference in beef cut & price. Also used to get 8 Cali rolls with the box now it's 4...that's half the amount without disclosing it on the menu at least! Not to mention the price increasing 8$ in 6 years that's a lot for it to be such less quality. Won't be recommending this place or ordering from them again. read more

Not a local reviewing! I'm unaware if Fresno has a sushi scene, but as a visitor to Fresno, who is always fiending for sushi, this spot was solid. I sat outside and enjoyed the patio and went with the lunch special that came with a soup or salad. I went with the salad, and it was quite large and the top was drenched in dressing, while the bottom was dry. It was fine. The California roll was filling, and the 4 pieces of sushi were solid. It tasted fresh enough, and I was quite stuffed. They had fancy rolls ranging from the regular style ones, to fancy ones, to cooked ones. While I didn't partake, I'd probably go that route next time. Prices were higher than I expected, if I'm being honest. They were on par with Bay Area prices. Ambiance and service was very casual. Also, soda is from the fountain, not canned. Tiger roll: a great introduction roll, after the California. Not complaints. Very delicious (5/5) Spoon special: so good. This was my favorite. It's spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado wrapped in salmon in a ponzu sauce(umami, sweet, tangy sauce) it melted in my mouth. (5/5) Philadelphia roll: I know it's controversial having cream cheese in sushi but I love it. It adds a nice creaminess. But this was your standard Philly roll. Good. (5/5) House salad: usually when you go to sushi spots they give a salad with a ginger dressing but here they give this creamy dressing. This was so tasty I ordered two extra side salads to take home with me. With extra sauce. That sauce makes it. The dressing was a bit oniony, sweet, creamy. I loved it. Service was fast. I ordered a sake roll to go and the salmon was pretty fresh! However the reason I'm giving this place a 2 star review is because the customer service was incredibly rude. I walked by at 1:35 pm since I was staying at the convention center hotel and it was the one of the only place that was that was still stated it was open at 2:30 pm. When I got there, the sign had been flipped closed. Somebody walked out and I asked, "Oh is this place closed?" And the man who was leaving said "it's still open." So I proceeded to walk in. The male server asked how he could help and I said table for 1. One of the other servers proceeded to say that they were actually closed. I told them their sign still said open til 2:30 pm. That server proceeded to say dine in closes at 1:30 pm. I was fine taking the food to go so I asked if I could place a to go order. The staff looked heavily annoyed and then asked one of the managers who then said it was still open for to go orders. I already felt uncomfortable so I ordered one roll so it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience as I could already tell I was annoying them. As I was ordering, the person at cash register continued to shake their head as I was ordering. I waited for my meal and I hear them tell the kitchen she only ordered one roll. Someone comes from the kitchen looking out the window, passively saying "we close at 1:30." I quickly took my food and left to eat outside. TLDR; don't come here past 1 pm for lunch. read more

We had dinner here on a Thursday before a show at the Saroyan and it was great! The service was fantastic. Everyone was so kind, and we were greeted by every employee when we came in and each of them said goodbye and thank you as we left. This is a casual restaurant, but it was very clean (even the bathrooms). We had four different sushi rolls, vegetable gyoza, and miso soup. The miso soup was good, but maybe a tiny bit bland. The gyoza were delicious, nice and crispy. Gyoza typically comes with a vinegar soy sauce, but these ones came with a sweet sauce. The sweetness threw off the taste a bit, but they were good overall. My favorite roll was the Booty Shake Roll, the combination with the cream cheese was delicious. I also really enjoyed the Oh Suzanne roll, it was very fresh and light and the ponzu sauce was delicious. We also tried the Hot Mess Roll, which was spicier than I expected. Finally we had the Bulldog roll, which was pretty good. Overall this was a great place for a more laid-back sushi meal! read more

Came in for a late lunch to miss the normal lunch crowd as Umi does get busy during the prime lunch hour as this is a small place inside. There is outdoor seating with umbrellas and large trees for shade. We started off with Garlic Edamame and flavor is good. I started with Tako Sunomono. Tako was fresh and not rubbery as it could if it's old the octopus is chewy and rubbery. This wasn't- fresh and crunchy over cucumber and lettuce. I had the Hamachi Collar Special menu that comes with miso soup (miso soup here is loaded with tofu- not skimpy, and seaweed) It also comes with a side salad that is on the plate but also a big bowl of salad! I gave the bowl of salad to my Brother as it is more than enough. The dressing Umi uses is flavorful and creamy. The Hamachi Collar is a large piece and the dipping sauce is flavorful. My Brother ordered the Chicken Udon that was flavorful and many pieces of chicken topped off with kamaboko. To get our "Fresh fish" fix we ordered the (It's off of the menu so you need to ask for it) Spoon Chef's Special!! This is something you need to try! It has spicy tuna on the bottom, a white fish, and salmon wrapped around cucumber slices in a sauce! Nice flavor if your looking for something without the rice! I fell in love with this little place the moment we walked in. Every staff member welcomed us with a hello and a smile. It is decorated so well. I love the umbrellas on the ceiling! Tina was such a wonderful server. She's very sweet and knowledgeable about the menu. The best service! The two of us ordered way too much food, but our taste buds took over. For appetizers we had the combo tempura and the 1/2 and 1/2 Jalapeno Bomb and Monkey Ball. I'm okay with a little spice. I was pleasantly surprised that they were not overly spicy. We both ordered bento boxes one with chicken teriyaki and the other with salmon teriyaki. The servings were pretty generous but the food was just okay. The California rolls hardly had any avocado while the salmon, chicken and miso soups came out pretty lukewarm. The chicken was a bit on the drier side and the salad dressing wasn't my favorite (no sesame seeds). I see my friends post about this place all the time and decided to give it a try. My sister and I came by during lunch on a weekday. Line was insane, but mostly for take out. We were able to get sat in about 5 mins. Waitress was nice. It's small in there and it being packed didn't help. We ordered the baked mussels, spoon special, and my sister got a roll. She's tried Umi and enjoyed it so there's that. Baked mussels were tasty. Great texture and a good size. Spoons special was sooo good. I'm a saucy person and a spoonful of sauce and some raw salmon is right up my alley. I've been thinking about it since I tried it and can't wait to be back. I hate giving one star reviews. With that being said this experience was garbage.I admit, the server did say the sushi would be about ten minutes. Which turned into twenty. My guest finished his meal before my food came out. When my food came out it tasted and looked like it had sausage. The LV is my go to at Japanese restaurants and this was overcooked and not like any LV roll I've ever had. I printed it out when I paid and another server rudely said "have a nice day" as we left. This is a late review, but better late than never, lol! Was in Fresno at a conference, so this location was super convenient, as it's right across from the conference center. Fresno is odd in that many of the food places are literally closed on weekends, including this place. But while it's open, they are packed!!! Ok, there aren't too many Japanese sushi places around, but you would still need to be decent to survive! Thankfully, they ate actually pretty tasty! I went there for lunch AND dinner and was fairly satisfied! You just need to plan ahead and go EARLY so it isn't too crowded. They are also not the fastest, but I think people order a lot of their rolls, which takes up a lot of time. I had a poke bowl for lunch and a chirashi bowl for dinner, so I was able to check out their sushi and how fresh their fish was. Both were tasty, cuts were good, and the poke flavor was pretty spot on. The chirashi was decent. I just didn't quite like the amount of seaweed and salad in it. I saw what other people ordered, and everything looked quite delicious! I'm just glad this location is still active and keeping up quality despite rising costs. People in the restaurant seemed really happy with this place, and there were regulars there, so that was a plus! It is not the largest of space though, which is probably why the wait can be tough. They do have outdoor seating, but it was too cold to sit outside, despite a warm fire! I'm just relieved to know I can head there again if I'm up in Fresno! read more

You can see so many businessmen and women going there for their lunch and tons of pick up and delivery orders. It just goes to show how many people enjoy the food there. The fish had a good texture and fresh tasting. We ordered 3 of the same appetizers, the spooned salmon that's raw wrapped with some avocado, cucumber, soaked and sitting on their sauce (ponzo like sauce) was delicious! All in the mouth in one big bite! I recommend trying this appetizer! We also ordered a seared sashimi tuna appetizer that was laid on top of some greens and had a side of seaweed and that was also one of my fav that night. The tuna was so meaty and lean. So delicious in its own way. The seaweed on the side was nice to change up the tastes in the mouth. I really enjoyed that dish. The staff are so nice, checking up on us from time to time. The menu has a great selection of things to order. This sushi joint is located downtown fresno and isn't a big place. Full house on a Friday night and had a small wait time.
