Full disclosure: I don't eat seafood which probably means an "All you can eat sushi" bar will have little to no effect on me. Is this fair to this place especially when critiqued? I will say if I was a sushi eater my assumption would be more than fair. I went to celebrate a friend's birthday party. A party that grew in size as the night went on. It was supposed to be a surprise birthday party. The only surprise was Umiya's business model is a mess and majorly flawed. Firstly they don't take reservations. You take a number and wait until you are called. Since it is all you can eat you can expect major camping. Expect a wait even with a party of two. After a person in our party secured a number for us everyone had arrived. By then the wait was an hour or so. That was not an issue. The problem was in the communication of available seating. A person from our party inquired about times and the manager became belligerent. I know a Saturday night is a pressure cooker time but there are ways to handle a situation. A person with a calm demeanor always prevails. Finally the manager seated our party but it was deep into a kimchi moshpit. A host took us to be seated but we were placed apart. It was a big party but I felt we could've fit in one long table. Again, this was not an issue. A major issue occurred when we had two servers. So one of the server's took our drink orders. I opted for an ipa on their menu. The server looked perplexed. I even pointed it out in their menu. The server had to consort with other bartenders to what it was exactly. Only to tell me three lives later they no longer carried it. I would expect this at a Texas Roadhouse but a place like this, the expectation should be different. From that point on the night devolved into a circus. One server took drink orders. Another server took food orders. At one point they were shifting tables. The cross hairs led to mass confusion. So much so at one point a bartender came out and went to each table asking whose drink was whose. I just remembered hearing "Is this your drink?" Followed by carrying a Dos XX and asking a person in our party "Is this your drink?" It was a bizarre display of service. Since I didn't do the "all you can eat" I opted to order from their a la carte menu. Here's where things get tricky. If you order their all you can eat option a server must come take your order; each time you ask for another food item. In other words it might be awhile before you are waited on. This is very inefficient since the server's station encompasses indoor and outdoor seating. In addition in my keen observation the portions were extremely small. Which probably encourages long camping. A patron, party could potentially be there overnight simply because it would be awhile before a server would come to them. The service was abysmal and the Japanese Bento Box tasted no different than something served in a mall food court. I will say the ambience is charming, screaming for it to move from mediocrity to extraordinary. The business model prevents itself from doing so. I feel it is more efficient to serve food in a buffet style or to have movable carts with main items. In addition after plates were used, dirty plates were never moved. After I finished my meal a person in our party never got their order. A consequence of being seated in separate tables allowed for mix ups to ensue all night. After a rotation of the sun a server was finally flagged down. The server said the order had to be re-placed all over again. In the midst of the overcrowded and extremely noisy place something dawned on me. Why do we opt to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. in the most impersonal places? There has to be a more personal touch than a crew of people singing happy birthday to you. Whilst a burning desert is presented to you. Unless your idea of having a good time is being seated at 7pm and not leaving until after 10pm. Or even the realization that time along with your money can never be returned. The service was horrendous. The food was basic at best. And the business model sucks. A place can be as extravagant as it wants to be. If it doesn't deliver good food nor service, it's just like a pretty wall hanging. It will eventually diminish over time. read more

When he returned,we informed him our second round of orders and reminded him that we still have not received our first orders. The sushi is not amazing. I am from Southeast Asia (born and raised) and trust me,this is not what I'd call a good sushi. The appetizers are greasy. And the dirty dish cart is parked next to customer tables. They're on the smaller side but it's great since you can get charged for leftovers being it a all you can eat. The draft beer was cheap and the special cocktail (blue Hawaiian) for $5 was a steal. I started out with White Miso Soup, a House Salad(iceberg lettuce only) with a Ginger dressing and Tuna Tataki which was 2 thinly sliced pieces of Tuna Sashimi with a soy/sesame/green onion sauce. I ordered 4 Nigiri, 2 pieces each: Tuna and Salmon and a Dragon Roll. You have to ask for Wasabi as it is not automatically included in a Sushi order. The Dragon Roll was comforting with the eel and avocado, albeit 8 smaller pieces vs. the other rolls we ordered. My friend can eat a lot esp. after the gym so she ordered Miso Soup, Fried Calamari(2 large deep-fried rings) & Shrimp Tempura. For rolls, she ordered: 2 Caterpillar Rolls, Spicy Garlic Edamame, 2 Spicy Kani Salads, I think a Harbor RIdge Roll and a Fried Oreo Cookie(3) with Strawberry Ice Cream. She ordered a Strawberry Lemonade for a drink which was included in the $19.95 AYCE menu. My other friend ordered Seaweed Salad, Spicy Crunch Roll, a Yummy Roll and Gyoza which has Pork. After I tried her Spicy Crunch Roll, I ordered one too and she finished it because it was getting too spicy for me after 3 or 4 pieces. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice and our waitress was very helpful but when can to ur food order that left a bad taste in my mouth. So we took our granddaughter for sushi and her plate came out quickly my wife's order was somewhat delayed but when it came to my order, it was forgotten completely! The waitress did check on it and I was told that the kitchen staff just forgot about my plate completely. The staff are attentive and patient. They come by asking for your order at a reasonable pace. Both the indoor and outdoor seating is nice, though sometimes the chairs seem a bit tight (but that might be because we are a larger group of 10+). You MUST try their mango delight roll. It is a delightful mix of sweet and savory with the mango slices, snow crab, and spicy mayo. I have never had fruit in my sushi, but this roll changed the game! This was a last minute dine in and I was in too much of a food coma after to even think about writing a review. AYCE is such a dream here in SA, and with Umiya being ONE of TWO AYCE sushi joints (Trapper's Sushi being the other)...it was a delight to finally experience this. The menu adds up. I've been to several sushi joints in my time, and I've NEVER see hibachi and a teriyaki section on an AYCE menu (thanks Vegas!). My husband and I ordered several rolls and appetizers, and each roll was very unique. We were amazed at the balance between the rice & the other ingredients. Many places load you up on rice in the sushi, and we applaud Umiya for being different in this sense. I personally enjoyed the MANGO DELIGHT roll. I'll say that I was disappointed that they do not do half rolls, therefore the 4 stars. As someone w/ not the biggest appetite, I would have truly enjoyed the experience a bit more if I was able to try more rolls by ordering half rolls. Alas, the world doesn't revolve around my needs *haha* Despite many reviewers saying that service is pretty slow during dinner, it was actually pretty steady for us. I really thought that I wasn't going to be able to eat as much as I did, but the $30 I paid for my dinner were well worth it. It's a buffet without the buffet tables. Your server takes your order and pretty soon after, you start getting food delivered to your table. My suggestion is to go with a group so you can share all the rolls. That way you can taste a lot more. You do have to ask for ginger and wasabi, so order it with your first order so you aren't having to flag down someone after your food arrives. What I liked: sashimi, rolls (except the red snapper roll), seaweed salad, hibachi shrimp, crab Rangoon. What I didn't like: calamari. It was very generic and a little chewy. Do be aware that you will have to wait till your waiter comes around to order more food, so if you plan to get more, order some as soon as you see the waiter again. Our waiter was excellent. He was patient with us while we were trying to figure out what we wanted. They do have a bar with daily drink specials. They have cocktails, beer and wine. The food here is good, however the price of all you can eat has gone up 3 dollars within the last year and they have reduced their military discount. Even if you're paying the whole check they only take the discount from YOUR all you can eat price instead of the whole bill. Additionally, they overcharge you. I visited a few days ago and was told I was given the military discount but upon checking the receipt again I found that they charged me the regular amount. Upon further investigation, I realized they also charged me more than the total after my tip. So not only have they increased the price and decreased the military discount, they are also overcharging their customers and taking more than the bill says. You can order up to 20 pieces per person per order. No matter what time I go, I always pay for the inner AYCE for the sashimi. The lunch is cheaper but there is only nigiri that is offered. My husband and I had a great date night tonight. I want to start off by saying this place is 100% worth the price. The dining room is beautiful, we loved the fish lights. Service was immaculate from the moment we walked in, till the moment we left. Our server Alan was incredible for it only being his fourth day there. Every single sushi roll we got was fresh. Fried items such as the egg rolls, crab puffs, etc were also freshly made and super crispy. I really LOVED the crab puffs and ate way more than I needed to but they were probably some of the best I've had in San Antonio. We even really enjoyed the udon. Zero complaints. New to Texas and decided to venture to one of San Antonio's premier AYCE Sushi and Grill called Umiya. TikTok raves about this place and by the environment, you can tell this place is popular along the valley. Menu Pricing: * For all you can eat, dinner pricing is extremely reasonable for the large options you receive for dinner. Included pictures of updated menus below. For lunch time, it is cheaper and does not include Sashimi. Food Quality: * SUSHI: sushi was good quality, sashimi was cut nice and did not have a frozen bite to them. Handled properly. You could tell some rolls did sit in the window slightly too long based on the seaweed if the seaweed was wrapped on the outside. There's some minor adjustments food runners can make but the runner team was very active throughout the restaurant. *KITCHEN ITEMS: hibachi proteins, rice, and noodles all came out nice and hot. These items did not sit in the window long, so was hitting the table while steam was coming off the food. The fried appetizers were a hit or miss, some tasted like the fryer oil while some lost texture due to too much oil. Hospitality: * Decided to sit at the bar today, was greeted after 7 minutes of seating there. Was able to order the first round which came out fast but I was missing everything that individuals after me came in and got/offered for table setting. Additionally waited 6 minutes after my food touched my table before the bartender came back to my side to finally check on me so I could get it ramekins for soy sauce and etc . Ordered round 2, about 18 minutes go by which I only ordered 1 roll. This roll was an entirely raw roll had no cooked items and was not a deep fried roll, when I went to order additional kitchen items because I was starving the bartender did not hide well that he forgot to put it in. I didn't make a fuss about it but continued to order new things so I could continue eating. After waiting longer it seemed my appetite had gone away because of the fact I'm not receiving great service and for that ruins the experience of the food. There was also another bartender with glasses who gave a weird demeanor as not greeting new guest sitting at the bar either. Extreme dive bar style that wouldn't even fly at a dive bar. Some guests faces were also confused because there was no formal greeting just "you order yet." They had no drinks, no settings in front of them, not even a menu. The serving staff were extremely attentive and tables seemed happy based on general observation. But today I was not with a $45 meal at Umiya with the level of service I received at the bar.
