This place was nothing short of AMAZING. My friends and I came here from up north and amongst craving some southern fried chicken, we saw this place highly rated online and decided to give it a try. When we first got there and got seated, we were immediately given all the "fix-ins" (Cole slaw, pickles and onions, beans, and hushpuppies). Apparently no matter what you order you get UNLIMITED fix-ins!! By the way, the Cole slaw was some of the best we've ever had... Came here on a Friday nite and we got right in. The food was good and came with all the fixins. The waitress was awesome. She made sure to always check on us to make sure we had everything we needed. And she was just really sweet. We got our food fast and it was nice and hot. I ordered the 3 pc fish fillet and my boyfriend ordered the chicken tenders. OK, neither of my parents ever mentioned having a brother named Bud or Buddy, so I'm just calling you Bud. Here is the thing (I sorta hate that phrase, but it fits here): Anything fried should not be bought as carry-out. It should be eaten right then - right there - especially in large quantities. Chicken maybe, but everything else should be eaten probably before you even make it back to your table. While your getting your drink - have a fry and some fish. Need to go to the bathroom - take your paper plate with you - by the time you get back to the table, it won't be AS good as when you paid for it. The ladies in our family like to get together every Monday night and watch what ever iteration of The Bachelor is currently airing. Needless to say we eat together practically every Monday night. Well this week was the mother-in-laws "turn" to provide the food so she decides to have her husband stop in Donelson - we are in Gladeville - for catfish and all the fixins' - did I spell that right? You can't see it, but I got a red squiggly line under fixins' - THERE IT IS AGAIN! Again FRIED fish, FRIED French fries, FRIED hushpuppies and rush hour traffic. All packaged in aluminum trays and lids. Have you ever been in a sauna or a green house or a tropical rain forest? Steam and fried just don't go together. By the time it was time to eat, we had wilted fish, soggy fries and mushpuppies - see what I did there? If you had eaten at the restaurant and gotten food in this condition - you would have sent it back - seriously, but it wasn't really all Bud's fault. There are six of us and a the cutest 2 year old grandson in the world - don't argue! She orders the Gone Fishin' family pack - feeds 6-8. Sixteen pieces of fish, four pints of sides and hushpuppies. Wait - that SURELY won't feed us! So she orders TWO! Bud - what the heck! You combined the fish for both in a single aluminum pan - that's good - also the fries. But what on earth was going on with the hushpuppies?! You gave us the same size aluminum pan FULL of hushpuppies! I ate two, as did most everyone else - if you have been pay attention - that's twelve eaten, so that left us with about a hundred more - I'm not kidding. To-go plates - or would that be to-go again plates were prepared for another meal. The fish went quickly. Granted it was 32 pieces, but they were very small pieces. Each one would was actually half of a filet so that was kind of a rip off. Oh - there was enough tartar sauce for two dozen more people. So If you like tartar sauce and hushpuppies - you are in luck! I walk in the mornings, so I put a bag of hushpuppies in all the neighbors mailboxes. If it had been colder, they would have gotten some tartar sauce, too. I put some in the freezer to throw away later... Lesson learned - if I EVER am in need of catering, it won't be fried catfish. read more

I don't understand why this place is reviewed so well. It could be that I had a one off experience. It could be that locals are proud of this place and don't know any better. Either way, if you have a choice, don't chance this place. I've eaten at quite a few catfish joints, but this is by far the worst. It may be the best in this area, but if you can find another place for AYCE catfish and chicken, do so. The service was good, if not somewhat overly attentive by the myriad of staff that stopped by the table. It was kinda annoying since I wanted to talk to my guest, but I will give them credit for trying. I had the catfish and chicken. Catfish can be difficult to fry and keep fresh since you have to keep the oil at a hot enough temperature to cook. If the temperature is to low, the fish begins to retain oil. If the oil is dirty, the oil will get fishy smelling quickly. To keep the fish from browning too quickly when the oil is dirty, they try to turn the oil down sometimes so it won't smoke. My meal was all but appetizing and edible. The filet were small and thin and carried almost more breading and oil than anything else. The taste was overly fishy and the oil made me sick. I had a plateful before I realized these were poor quality filet. I opted to go to the chicken next. The chicken strips were overly breaded and dry. The chicken pieces were breaded differently than the strips, so it appears that the same manufacturer does not produce them or does not produce them at the same level of attention. Either way, the chicken cannot possibly be hand breaded on site with that kind of quality. There are too many places in Nashville for chicken, don't go here if chicken is what you crave. Stay away from this place, it isn't worth the time if you like well prepared catfish, this is not for you. Since they try to get as much out of the oil before they change it, there is no telling what quality you are getting the day you go there. This may seem overly harsh, but I take getting ill seriously as it is a threshold that should not be crossed. read more

Came here this past weekend with some friends and IT WAS SO DELICIOUS! I had never been here before so I didn't really know what to expect but once I walked into Uncle Bud's, I knew I was in a good place. It smelled like southern goodness. When we were seated, we were immediately given coleslaw, hush puppies, and white beans. All of us ordered the fried chicken, which is all-you-can-eat on Sundays, and it's only like $7.95. It also came with gravy, fries, and biscuits. I was in awe at how cheap the food was AND how delicious it was. The services was amazing - our waitress checked in on us regularly and made sure we had plenty of water. She was wonderful. This is a great family dinner spot where you can grab a yummy meal for a low price. I never really eat southern grub because it can be too heavy for me but this is my new favorite spot! We just arrived in Nashville for a long weekend and were searching for unique dinner spots. This place is a hidden gem. The food is amazing, and they will continue bringing you food until you make them stop. The staff was professional, friendly, and full of southern charm. Went to pick an order of food up this evening, food looked forward to. While waiting inside for my "to go order" a young lady behind the cash register along with a young man doing paper work, both employees of Uncle Bud's, started a conversation like this: the young man asked the cashier "what is that man's name" and pointed to whom he was asking about and the cashiers reply was "I don't know I didn't hire him, you all did" where the young man beside her replied "I had nothing to do with that hire" then pointed at the new hire and said "he's not right" doing the crazy sign as we did as kids years ago. I looked at who they were talking about and could tell he was new and still learning. It really flew all over me and I started to say something but thought no I will go on yelp and maybe they, the owner or manager pays attention to remarks. That conversation was wrong all across the board, first customers were standing waiting for to go orders, second no one person is any better then the next person and should never talk about someone especially since they obviously did not know the new person. It made me mad as none of us no not one are mistakeless including those two employees who were talking about the new hire. I couldn't see name tags or I would be putting their name here for Uncle Bud to see. What a great time we had at this place! All begin with a uber driver called Dennis, t'was a divine appointment. Visiting on our way to the airport we asked about a good place to eat 100% normal food - not hotel, not franchise, not wannabes - real deal local restaurant. 4.5 I hadn't been to Uncle Bud's since law school. Honestly, due to the ravages of time/age, I'd forgotten about it but I found myself in Donelson looking for some rare books. Once I stumbled upon UB, all the giant mason jar memories came pouring back. I knew I had to return to overindulge on fried perfection. Luckily, my neighbors were in search of a Sunday afternoon lunch spot that was casual, easy on the wallet and baby friendly. I knew *just* the place. A quick jaunt later and we were at Uncle Bud's. What I hadn't considered: the post-church crowd. A morning of stern looks [redacted] or raucous praise [redacted] works up an appetite and these saints were hungry! I pushed past the multitudes to put in our parties' name and then came outside to start the diabeetus™. Just as I remembered, Uncle Bud's provides SWEET tea by the gallon (literally) to impact your pancreas as you wait. Our 20-minute wait time extended to thirty but who's counting when you are playing Russian roulette with sugar? Seriously, I kept a death grip on my cup despite 'complaining' of the sugar levels. Once we sat (with my cup of sugar tea), we were greeted by the kindly Brittany who brought up fixins (beans, slaw and hush puppies; can I get an 'amen' for those hush puppies??) and took our drink orders. My friends opted for water. Me? Another sweet tea, please!* Sundays are ALL YOU CAN EAT fried chicken days. Said fried chicken comes with never ending gravy, fries and biscuit. Despite coming here for catfish could I really compare never ending fried chicken with one piece of fish? No. No, I couldn't -- and neither can you. With every bite, I knew I was making a mistake but I couldn't push away from the table. My sexy fed. My blood got thicker. My organs screamed for relief... yet onward I pushed. My neighbors were a bit frightened but are much too kind to say anything. They simply mentioned 'getting dessert' as a way to make my savory onslaught stop. The dessert options of the day were banana pudding and peach cobbler. The pudding came topped with whipped cream and the cobbler came topped with ice cream. We got both (to share between 3 people). To my shock, I enjoyed the pudding better. I *don't* like banana pudding and this tasted fresh. It was ice box cold, had chunky bananas and the vanilla wafers were hard and crisp, not wilty and mealy like I remember from my afterschool programs. The cobbler tasted a bit off to me. As fresh as the pudding tasted, the cobbler tasted like it was made with canned peaches. I didn't care for it. But with as much as my big ass ate, I needed a reason to push back from the table. This the place for all you can eat country comfort food. I've been all over the South and these are the BEST WHITE BEANS I've ever put in my mouth! The catfish was perfectly breaded and cooked, the fried chicken moist and crunchy, and the biscuits are clouds of heaven. Excellent choice for out-of-towners looking for a great catfish meal! Hubs and I came out to Nashville for his dental school interview and really...really...really wanted catfish. We tried someplace downtown but the place was jam packed and the downtown streets was way too narrow and crowded for me. Buds was actually our second choice. It had to have been around 7pm when we got there...please don't hate me for this comment...but I was nervous with all this talk about racism in the south...it was just uncomfortable for a bit. I was actually much more nervous for my husband than myself...but THANKFULLY I had absolutely nothing to worry about!!! We were seated within 15 mins and our waitress was Mekay. She was awesome! Super nice and emits southern hospitality through and through! We ordered the catfish plates and while we waited we had bowls and plates of pickles, hush puppies, onions and such placed in front of us. We weren't exactly sure what was going on and we didn't order this...but Mekay explained that these sides were free and all you can eat when you order meals!!! FREE FOOD?!? sounds good to me! (Our favorite were the beans) The catfish was delightfully most and flavorful and we ordered banana pudding that was served with a smile! Literally...it was served with a whipped cream smile. Too cute and so tasty! After all our doubts we came to absolutely LOVE this restaurant! Mekay you are wonderful and we are so thankful to have you as our server! Excellent catfish, po boys and chicken. You can choose a basket or a plate and don't forget they have shrimp also. The white beans are homestyle with bacon and other spices and I could literally eat only the hush puppies. Don't forget to top it off with a glass of sweet tea! i just recently ordered out and the food was ready in 10 mins and outstanding. Found off yelp by looking for catfish - Thanks yelp. Great catfish. Sat down, we got hush puppies, slaw, white beans, and pickle and onion almost immediately and drinks right after. Slaw was great - poppy seed dressing is the main flavor, fresh cabbage. Hush puppies were hot and fresh and delicious. White beans were amazing, exactly why I love white beans. Wife got fish and shrimp as main, I got fish and chicken. Fish was exactly what I was lookin for - cornmeal batter that was crisp and the fish was cooked great. The shrimp and fish had similar (same?) batter that was obviously fresh and hand done. It was absolutely delicious. The fries were an after thought because everything else was so good but they were excellent to take home and crisp up. Overall this was a great meal, well worthy of the five stars. I'll note for myself that the chicken came with an amazing biscuit and their white gravy (which is surprising hard to find in Nashville, especially for a Texan) was as good as any I've had in town. We've already put a calendar entry in so we'll go with once a month, it's that good. If you are thinking about going, go already. I love Uncle Buds. I think it's great. The food is always consistent and the service is great. We went today and no one ordered anything off the all you can eat menu, and we did not ask for refills on our sides. I asked for a Togo box for my enormous amount of food left over. I was brought a paper tray with a piece of foil. I said that the tray wouldn't hold my meal, and I was brought 2 more. This stack of paper trays with a sheet of foil would not have made it home. The tray is something you would serve a side of fires in. I had a left over chicken breast, biscuit, baked potato, a piece of my son's fish and I wanted to take some of the slaw that the table shared. Obviously the paper trays were not appropriate to take this home in. I asked for a proper box, which I saw they had, and my server said they were not allowed to give them out. She super politely offered to get the manager, and he graciously obliged to pack it up in a box. He explained since they offer all you can eat portions that they only offer the paper trays and foil. So they totally went above and beyond and basically broke their policy for me. I'm the kind of person that can never finish a restaurant portion and always take home for later. The paper trays are just a mess and make this impossible. I will return because I love the place, but I usually refuse to go to places that have a sketchy Togo policy. I would highly recommend being more accommodating of people taking food Togo. We were not abusing the all you can eat. We all ordered regular menu items. Nothing all you can eat. None at my table of 6 asked for extras on the all you can eat sides. I was so appreciate that the rules were broke to accommodate me, but it's really an off putting rule. The shrimp I thought though was excellent and I would definitely go back for a shrimp dinner. The meal plates come with a heap of food to include fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, and white beans. The beans and fries are average but I felt the slaw and puppies were above average.
