We got the beef grill, spicy, vegetables perfectly crispy, meat perfectly tender and intense flavor throughout. Order a side of rice to go with it to balance the salty flavors. Last dish we got was the Szechuan chicken noodle dish. What surprised me was that most of the customers were Westerners--it's hard to imagine that everyone can handle such bold, heavy flavors, but I decided to give it a try. Environment: [[HIGHLIGHT]]The overall lighting is quite dim, with black tables and black chairs. The ambiance is also on the darker side.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Taste: We ordered shrimp wontons, dan dan noodles, and a bowl of maocai (a type of spicy boiled dish). The maocai was quite watery, not at all like the rich, thick broth of boiled beef in chili sauce--the ingredients weren't very flavorful. The shrimp wontons were very fresh. The dan dan noodles were delicious. Service: The restaurant is run by a Chinese couple who moved to Eugene about 10 years ago. You can tell they really love this place and run the restaurant with great care. When I was paying, for some reason my card kept getting declined, but the owner actively helped me figure out a solution, which eventually eased the awkwardness. What a surprise this little place by the college have some legit asian food! I was visiting my daughter and found this place on Yelp. Since we were by the college, we walked over. We weren't really sure about this place at first because it was empty and the lady didn't really acknowledge us. Infact, she kinda disappeared somewhere for a while. This place really surprised me! For a place so close to campus, I expected at-best-average-Americanized Chinese food. What I got was pretty authentic Chengdu food. I got the spicy fried chicken which had plenty of meat (vs just breading), really good flavor, wish it was spicier but it was crispy and tasty. The spicy beef noodle soup was also rich in umami flavor, a tad too salty for me personally but the beef was tender, the noodles had a nice bite and the broth was pleasant. The chef behind the quaint restaurant on East 13th Ave learned his craft in the capital of China's Sichuan province, which is Chengdu. He's started at just 19 years old and has been perfecting his craft for 26 years. You can certainly taste his dedication with anything you order from Uniquely Chengdu. My favorite dish has to be what my friend told me to try: the braised eggplant with garlic sauce. The sauce is so delicious you won't want to waste a single drop (I poured the rest over rice) and the eggplant is cooked to tender perfection. Not the best, not the worst. I think it could've been spicier and more numbing. The grilled fish was good too but very very salty. I also expected the grilled fish to come out bubbling like it's usually supposed to but it didn't. Seemed pre-cooked and not fresh. Still, the flavors were all good enough for me to be willing to come back! Service was quick and the ordering process was easy. We were craving for Asian food after having American food for all of our meals for all 3 days. I was a little hesitant finding a good Asian, let alone a Chinese, restaurant within Eugene, OR. Based on Yelp reviews and recommendations, we ended trying out Uniquely Chengdu. This place is a bit of self-service and party with dine-in service. All the patrons have to write down their own orders and take it to the front counter. Understandable, given the limited number of staff in the restaurant. The lady sever was very nice and did great in getting our food served quickly. We actually thought it was too quick! Hahaha I especially liked the grilled fish on the hot griller. I miss eating spicy food. It was amazing how they had so much items in the dish with the fish: tofu skin, celery, tripe, seaweed, mushroom ears, cauliflower, and French fries. It was delicious. The cumin lamb was also a hit with the adults. The kids loved the veggie fried rice and XioLimgBao (steamed dumplings). My younger son devoured the beef noodle soup. He can eat a whole serving on his own. The kids also ordered from their Asian blended drinks. Most of them got the mango Yakut. They wanted the brown sugar drink but they ran out :( Overall, this is a great place to get good Chengdu cuisine and if your craving for something spicy. Food/Taste/Flavor: 4/5 - spicy beef noodle soup (D4) and spicy hotpot noodle soup (D9). The food was good overall but the chili oil does cover the taste of the broth a bit. We were slight confused by the raw SPAM like protein in the hotpot soup as it didn't quite fit the rest of the dish. Ambience: 4/5 - spacious shop with large windows that lets you people watch as you enjoy your meal. The store does feel older or the decorations isn't kept up well. Service: 2/5 - only one lady managing the front of the store but she disappears to the back quite often. When we walked into the shop we weren't quite sure if we were supposed to order at the front or sit at a table so we awkwardly stood and waited for about 2/3 minutes before she came back to the front. After we sat, she gave us a little pad and told us to write down what we wanted then walked away. There's a sign that says they're trying to save paper so pay at the cash register. We stood for about 3/4 before she came back up to address us. As I went through the payment process, I tried to input my phone number to get a receipt and she cancelled or rushed the prompt which doesn't allow me to finish the process. I then asked for a physical receipt and she became a bit flustered trying to state they don't print receipts. She did end up providing a copy! Service was a bit clumsy and rushed, but the food came out very fast and very hot. Overall everything was just okay tasting. The noodles were good, but not my favorite flavor. The cream cheese wontons came with brown oil sitting inside of them from the fryer and they also didn't come with any kind of sauce. Soda here is served in a can, which is fine, just an fyi. But, we spent $50 for a delivery order of Mongolian beef, and the house fried noodles. $50 for two plates is already insane, but the portion sizes were absurdly small!! The Mongolian beef could've been sold as an appetizer. And it didn't even come with rice. Never once in my life have I ordered Asian food that didn't come with a side of rice. That just makes the $50 price point even more absurd. I will say again, the flavor of the food was decent. But, it was extremely oily. Like, coated my lips in oil level of oily. And the fried noodle, I dug through the whole thing and only had 2 pieces of shrimp, and one piece of beef. This is one of my top two favorite Chinese restaurants in Eugene. It has some pretty good Sichuan food, and I am always quite surprised the variety and quality of the food here. I have tried many menu items here, from Dan Dan Noodle, their Boiled Fish Filet w/Chili Sauce, Chengdu Vegetable Steam Pot, etc. I'm definitely a spicy food eater, and the fact that this place leaves me sweating is a bonus. The food uses Sichuan peppercorns, which is a must - the numbing spicy always makes me want to eat more! Although my stomach always hates me afterwards, in the moment, the heat and the spice keeps me going... I haven't tried their more American style dishes and can't vouch for those, but for some really good spicy Sichuan style Chinese food, give Uniquely Chengdu a try! read more

What a fun, Dining experience while visiting Eugene. I was looking for a place that was open and not a chain. It wasn't very busy but probably had a lot to do with the fact that the school at the University was already out of session. Service was fast and kind, food had wonderful flavor, but my only critique were that my soup dumplings had holes in them and had leaked out most of the soup. Sometimes, a little hole in the wall will really surprise you. This was one of those times. We were exploring the UO campus since our kid starts there in the fall, and wanted something different for lunch. We just happened to stroll past Chengdu and so thought we'd give it a spin. The menu is mostly Szechuan, and boy was it spicy - not in a bad way just perfectly, lip-tingling, tongue-smacking spicy. Noodle dishes were perfectly prepared, steaming hot, and very reasonable - just like you'd expect on a college campus. I hope the UO students know what a gem they have here! Wonton soup was authentic, lots of veggies and flavor, overall this place just did not disappoint. Their "wall of encouragement" full of wonderful messages really brought a smile to our faces while we were enjoying our lunch - who wouldn't like to read uplifting messages with spicy food? Mainly the menu is Szechuan cuisine (from Southwest China), which dominates the great deal of famous Chinese dishes. The owner/chef of this particular restaurant came from Los Angeles (California) and brought the best selection to northwest that we might not find easily in Portland and Seattle. --- 2021.05.15. The portions are small, but it tasted pretty authentic and we enjoyed what we ordered: broccoli chicken, chicken chow mein, kungpao chicken, and spicy beef noodle soup.
