I've always wanted an Uncle Tetsu to open up in San Diego and I'm so glad it's finally here! I've tried the original, ube, and black sesame flavors. The original and ube flavors were the best. The black sesame flavor was a bit too much. Their cheesecakes are not too sweet and it's also light and fluffy. Overall I recommend coming to Uncle Tetsu to get your cheesecake fix if you don't want a super sweet cake and craving for more of a lighter cheesecake. read more

Probably the best Japanese cheesecake place! The classic plain flavor was perfectly fluffy and consistent with great packaging. Sadly when I went they had a limited menu with only four flavors. Hopefully they bring in the rest soon to try. The storefront is very small, no seating and I don't think there's really anywhere convenient nearby to enjoy. They also only had full cakes... We went to the location in Pasadena a few years ago, it was a two hour wait. This new location we were able to walk right in, order and out in under five minutes. They also have several flavors. They are not a sweet as I remember and a little more eggy flavor. The down side is parking is awful, your better off finding street parking, or if there are two of you one dropping you off as soon as you enter the parking lot and by the time they get to the side where the bakery is you will be done. We got the original and the Oreo. They also had the ube one to sample. They all have similar taste and texture. For the ube one the ube is mixed through the whole thing, where as the Oreo is just the top half inch or so. They also have a stamp card. read more

In a previous review, I wrote that I didn't like the cheesecake here (but the cheese tarts are very good), but I gave Uncle Tetsu another try, and this time I enjoyed the cheesecake. You just have to really know what to expect, which is that this tastes nothing like a traditional cheesecake. We got the original and it was pretty good after sticking it in the fridge for a bit. The cheesecakes are amazing! They are some of the best I have had! I tried the original, ube, Oreo, coffee, and Basque. The Basque is my favorite by far! Each cheesecake is incredibly light and fluffy. The flavors are not overpowering and they are not overly sweet. Perfect for those who don't really have a sweet tooth. There's really only enough space to order as the kitchen takes up more of the room so hopefully you can come when there's not too long of a line. There was no line but also no tables to dine-in. It's just a grab and go style. We tried to order the burnt style but it was already sold out.
