This was my first time at Uncle Tetsu and for $13 a cake ($23 for the basque flavors), I would definitely repurchase a cheesecake or two for a party or potluck. Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes are the perfect dessert for someone who doesn't have a giant sweet tooth. I bought an Oreo cheesecake and my friends bought an ube cheesecake (you can't buy individual slices). The texture is light and airy and is what I imagine a hybrid between a sponge cake and soufflé pancake would be. Both of the cheesecakes had a mild taste of their respective flavors. True to east Asian desserts, the cheesecakes also aren't overbearingly sweet. The service was very fast and the staff boxed up our cakes for us as soon as we ordered. There isn't any seating inside, so be prepared to enjoy your cheesecake to-go. The plaza can be crowded since the shop is located amongst other popular restaurants on Convoy. But parking can be found either in the plaza, down the street, or at the paid parking garage. read more

Been waiting years to get an Uncle Tetsu down here in San Diego ever since I tried it in their location in the Santa Anita Mall. Japanese cheese cake is light and fluffy, and less sweet than regular cheese cake. This location is on Covoy next to Revolve sushi. Unfortunately parking is a pain, and most likely you will need to use the pay lot in front of Jasmine. Our favorite is the original standard cheese cake, but there is Strawberry. I have been to Japan many times and the desserts there are just so good. Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake and the cheesecake tarts are so good and just like they are made in Japan. Maybe I went on an off day, but my first experience here was a disappointment. Given that SD lacks Japanese cheesecake I was pretty excited to see Uncle Tetsu. I've had my fair share of Japanese cheesecakes back in Asia and in OC so I had a good idea of what to expect going in. However, my original cheesecake was poorly made. I know these types of cheesecakes are meant to be moist, my cake was beyond that - it was almost runny and mushy. The texture was off because of this, and taste had way too much egg flavor to enjoy. The cake was barely holding itself from its form and was difficult to eat since it didn't keep its form when forked or spooned into. This place hasn't even been open for that long, but seems like QC is already slipping up. On top of that, I asked the cashier if they had samples (since many guests on Yelp commented that they did) and she gave me an attitude and rolled her eyes. Saw these jiggly cheesecakes all over Facebook and saw that it was available locally. The line was long but relatively fast. The cheesecakes themselves were okay. I'm a sweet tooth kinda gal who loves indulgent desserts so this was a bit bland for me. I know, I know, it's one of those desserts that aren't supposed to be slap ya diabetes sweet, but it was just kinda ehh for the wait time and hype. They ARE super moist, light, airy, jiggly, and adorable. They just lacked that little bit of oomff I was looking for. I ended up dusting some powdered sugar over each cake to bring out some sweetness. Overall, I think it's more of an afternoon tea/coffee dessert. Definitely good for potlucks though. my brother brought home uncle tetsu, so i am unsure of the service or ambiance but taste is where it's at! i tried the original and the ube and out of the two the the original was devoured by three people in almost 10 mins, so fluffy and light it's dangerous. and i think it costed around $13 per cake. it is about the size of a normal sized hand of all five fingers spread out, which is decent for cakes. i will say the ube one is is not very sweet and could use a bit more sweetness but if you like really not sweet dessert it's for you. both were delicious and best served chilled! read more

I am so glad Uncle Tetsu opened up in SD!!! The Pandan Cheesecake is actually one of the best things I've ever had in my life. I'm not sure where one can even start describing the flavor of it. I love desserts, but cannot handle it when things are too sweet because my throat will start screaming at me immediately, but Uncle Tetsu's cheesecakes are so perfectly sweetened I am in awe of how I can eat so many slices without needing a water break. I am also a huuugeee black sesame fan, so when I saw that they came out with a black sesame flavor I had to get it right away! But maybe I should have waited.... Because it wasn't as amazing as I had imagined. Don't get me wrong, it was still delicious, just nowhere near as delicious as the Pandan or Original flavor. The black sesame just didn't have its moment and it took my family several days to finish it (compared to the Pandan one that was absolutely demolished in an hour).
