Made reservation for a Saturday early dinner as reviews said to make one if not willing to wait. Got to the restaurant on time, seemed to be a slow Saturday early evening as I saw a lot of empty tables. Maybe they were all reserved? Not sure. We were greeted by the staffs and shown to the table. Smooth and fast. All the menu looked tempting so had hard time choosing which one to go with. Went with meatloaf and miso salmon. Meatloaf was really good! Flavorful with tender/juicy meat combined with onions, bell peppers etc. Miso salmon was also good! Okra and broccoli were adding more taste to the dish itself. No complaints at all! The prices were on the higher side though. Menu says each are $28. However, there was mandatory service charge of 20% and tax was calculated after the service charge, which end up being approximately $40 per menu item we got - miso salmon and meatloaf. Wish the menu price would just include service charges so prices would not be misleading with all the charges after. Not sure if this is because of World Cup 2026, but too bad they had to hit their customers with extra fees after enjoying the meals which could have ended happily rather than leaving a bad taste in the mouth.
I came here with friends to catch up. Location was great. Right on the side of the convention center. It was clean and a the energy was great there. Customer service was great. Our service was great and the server was great. Literally not one bite of any item we ate was nothing less than 5 stars. The buffalo cauliflower and sweet potato house rolls were amazing appetizers. My double cheeseburger and fries was one of the best burgers I have had in a long time. The meat was so rich in flavor. The fries were a perfect mix of outside crispiness and soft inside. My girlfriend got the pot roast rendang and the salted caramel ice cream. Both were so good. This is spot was amazing and I highly recommend this location and plan to stop here anytime I'm in the area visiting.
My forever go to for brunch went in the DC area. The staff was great. The food is great. The convenient location to the convention center made me a repeat patron! There is usually a line, but with seating inside, outside and at the bar, it is usually not a long wait. I opt to the sit at the bar since I was participating in a conference and needed a quick turnaround. Server acknowledged me right away as he was preparing drinks for another patron. I was extremely impressed with the menu offering which had traditional breakfast items mixed with fresh veggies, and spices from around the world. I ordered the Brussel sprouts with fried egg whites. It was delicious and extremely filling. I savored each and every bite. The only thing I would have preferred would have been more coffee offerings. The food here is truly king and I can work with that!
A group of four of us went here for dinner after searching for a while. We had a tough group to satisfy-a picky eater whose isn't adventurous and just wants Taco Bell all the time, a self proclaimed foodie who likes to seek out the Michelin star restaurants but actually isn't as adventurous in trying new foods as he thinks he is (hopefully he doesn't see this post haha), another who is willing to try most things but is also happy just eating low key and doesn't like to spend money, and then there's me who wants to try new things, willing to spend a little to try it and is happy going with the flow too. Thankfully we ended up at the Unconventional Diner and it was perfect for satisfying everyone in the group!! We were all able to get tasty drinks- from n/a Hibiscus Citrus lemonade, white wine, a cinnamon toast old fashioned (what? A cereal inspired old fashioned, yes please and it was fantastic!), and a Bourbon basil smash. Then the crew settled on some food-the waiter was patient with the questions and contemplation from the table (thank you!). We started with the SKILLET CORNBREAD with Habanero Honey Butter | Sea Salt (v) And that was melt in your mouth cornbread. Damn. Real cornbread seems hard to come by any more and this is the real deal. And the honey butter and flake sea salt-can't go wrong. I'm a spice weeny-for reals-and this was incredible. It's a MUST get. Across the table we had two of the double cheese burgers (I warned, we have a lack of adventurous eaters) -and they both said the burgers were the best they've had. I had the Philly French double dip, with horseradish cream and caramelized onions-so fantastic-the roast beef was melt in your mouth and the broth was the perfect saltiness. Our fourth got the fried chicken sandwich and really loved the dill pickle slaw that came with it, and the chicken was not over cooked and not raw-perfect! We all had fries with our meals, the thinner kind with light seasoning and none of us could stop eating them, even when we were clearly full, the fries just kept disappearing.
This place really hit the spot! We got the calamansi frizzante, piña colada latte, loaded breakfast biscuits, and French dip poutine. Every bite was delectable. The crispiness of the hash browns in the biscuits, and the biscuits themselves, were to die for. The beef in the poutine was perfectly tender. The drinks were so refreshing as well. The only thing I regret is that I didn't have room to finish it all! I can't remember our server's name, but I loved the social battery meter pin she had on her apron. It was hilarious! Girl, me too!!!
The service was amazing. She was super friendly and always checked in. I came here with my girls and we had an absolutely wonderful time! The ambiance really adds to the cozy, lovely feel. It's like a cozy, modern, diner - bright but warm. Love the aesthetic and atmosphere. The drinks we ordered were fantastic!!! All the food we ordered to share and all of them were delicious. I really enjoyed my time here. My one comment is that we got a chocolate cake and it was kind of dry, I typically love a more moist cake, but it was still tasty nonetheless. I would come back in a heartbeat, I really love this place and can imagine coming back here on a date to have some drinks and bites.
Found this little gem for brunch while in DC and boy was it tough to chose what to order. Everything looked delicious. Ultimately we landed on the avocado toast and the blueberry pancakes with a side of bacon and calamansi frizzante to drink. Figured the avocado toast would be well, smashed avocado and toast, but the presentation was nicely surprising! Love that they bring out the toast and avocado separately so you get to decide how much or how little you want to pile on. Also made it easier for my bf and I to share. The flavors were great! There was a perfect amount of citrus and kick. The pancakes did not disappoint either! The blueberry lavender sauce was delicious and coated the pancakes perfectly. It's always nice to find that perfect sauce-to-butter-to-pancake ratio. You just dive into a fluffy sugary heaven. This place is definitely a favorite around the area. It was packed, but the service was still so quick. It's brightly lit, lots of fun colors, the perfect brunch vibe. Definitely would give dinner a shot next time we're in the area.
My husband brought me here during our DC visit. We had a hard time deciding what to pick (everything sounded amazing) so we decided to split the chicken sandwich and pancakes! Sweet and savory meal. Both were incredible and flavorful, I can see why this restaurant is so notable!! Highly recommend this restaurant for any meal. 10/10 - a must visit rating from me!!
I didn't think it was that unconventional, but I would use terms like "interesting" or possibly "eclectic," also "delicious" and "enjoyable." We started with an appetizer of Buffalo cauliflower. This isn't your restaurant-chain cauliflower out of a bag and into the deep fryer, and the sauce was just as fresh. That was followed by Thai salads, heavy on the cabbage, crunch, and flavor, and just unique enough to make it ... well ... unconventional. Service was prompt, friendly, and professional, and everything we ordered came out fast. And that's the stuff about this place that I want to see stay conventional!
Made a stop after attending a convention down the road. The restaurant was very well kept and beautiful inside. Tables were clean, organized, and well spaced for easy moving about. The staff were very friendly, always smiling and happy to help. Our drinks were next empty and the cocktails my group ordered were all delicious and refreshing. All food items ordered did not disappoint. Serving sizes were generous and well prepared. Pricing is a tad high for what you order but that's a byproduct of the capital region. The atmosphere was a cool mix of locals, businessmen, and fellow conference attendees. Music was soothing and hip, making the experience great and comfy. Only things I'd suggest for the Seggzy Sandwich would be to maybe change the fries to something more. Minor change at that. Highly recommend Unconventional Diner to anyone visiting the area. It's a great spot with excellent food and friendly staff.
Delish! We didn't have reservations so we had to sit at the bar but that was ok! Service was fast and friendly! We started with drinks, a mimosa and the pina colda espresso martini, both were good! There are a few unique menu options which is cool! We stuck to a more traditional breakfast route and ordered the loaded breakfast biscuits and the crème brûlée French toast and omg they were so good! The savory option with the biscuits was so good and rich, and the sweet option with the French toast was delish as well! You get a lot of food too, we couldn't even finish! We will definitely come back.
Tbh I can't really define unconventional, but all I know is this place is delicious. Recommended to me by a friend - we went here for my wife's birthday. The service is spectacular, Sammy was our waiter and made the experience too fun. All of the dishes we tried were great but incorporated unique, delicious .... Even UNCONVENTIONAL flavors to make for a satisfying and interesting meal. I'm coming back - you should eat here. What else do I have to say??? read more

What a great brunch spot! A Michelin contributor (not star) - you can tell by the quality of their food. More expensive than it should have been, but hoping that was more from COVID than anything. The sweet potato shakshuka was fantastic (really pleasantly surprised by this). This Indian inspired stew-like dish packed a great kick which was great. The added falafel was meh, so you could go without (outside, fried coating was too thick with how small they were). The fried chicken sandwich was a massive piece and very crispy. Could have had more sauce, but overall solid. read more

Not sure why it took me so long to try Unconventional Diner, but after finally trying it, I have to say it is my favorite brunch place in the DMV area. I went on a weekday with two of my friends with a reservation for brunch. It was pretty packed, so I was happy we had a reservation already. We were seated after waiting like 15-20 minutes inside. Our waiter was very enthusiastic and animated which was great throughout the meal. Food: Ana and Eve's French Toast (Apple Confit | Bourbon-Caramel) - I am not a huge fan of sweets for breakfast and especially french toast, but I split this with my friends and it was really good! It was sweet and rich, but it was unique and the apple/caramel flavor was very good. I could only eat a small part of it though because of the richness. Lebanese Fried Rice with Falafel (Lentils | Two Fried Eggs | Yogurt | Almonds) - Very interesting Mediterranean inspired fried rice! I really enjoyed it with the falafel, rice, hummus and eggs with some tang from the yogurt ad pickles. Overall, it was a fun brunch dish though my only complaint was that it was a bit oversalted. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Unconvential Diner! I am a big fan of this place and would love to come again for brunch or dinner and try more of their unconventional dishes. read more
Another foodie place checked off the list! Good food and trendy atmosphere. Enjoyed the biscuit sandwich, Adam and Eve French Toast, and a side of bacon! French toast was loaded with toppings which was great, but was only one slice of bread, I suggest another slice of bread to better align with the amount of toppings and fill me up. I'm glad I had a side of bacon, otherwise I would have left hungry. read more
The service was amazing!! We sat at the bar and the man helping us was so sweet! He tried his best to make sure our dishes were good. I unfortunately forgot to ask to take off the caramel sauce before ordering and he was able to take care of it. He was able to get me a whole new dish without the caramel. I really appreciated the service as they were extremely accommodating and tried their best. The food was delicious as well!! I'm very much looking forward to coming back! read more
A delicious and beautiful brunch spot in DC! Really delicious food, especially the French dip poutine and the Lebanese fried rice. The drinks are great too--I loved the Cool for the Summer drink, which had guava purée and coconut whip. A little expensive compared to portion sizes--although, what isn't expensive here haha--but absolutely worth making a reservation! read more
OVERALL: -Would definitely return next time I'm in town to try more of these fun takes on classic dishes! -Meat loaf and Brussels sprouts were both excellent, albeit exceptionally rich. -Chicken Parm Florentine was delightful -Chicken pot pie tots sounded interesting, but were not worth it. They tasted more like chicken nuggets than pot pie or anything else. -Service was friendly and overall fine, but we were waiting for our check for a long time (15-25 minutes) after we were done with our meal and ready to leave. The Unconventional Diner is just that...unconventional. It's in their name and their staff own it in their messaging and spiel they give to new guests. After a visit on week two after opening, I agree. It's unconventional in these ways: 1) The space: It's in the Convention Center in the foodie district of Mt Vernon. It's surrounded by top DC restaurants like Kinship and The Dabney, yet it's in a building that attracts thousands of tourists. Who's their target audience? The DC local base or tourists? I can see tourists stumbling in the diner and enjoying it, but locals may struggle a bit to see this place as worthy of the DC food scene, but hopefully they'll give it a chance. Also, the space is divided into two spaces. One is more fancy, not like a diner at all, run by the chef. The right side is more casual run by the chef's wife, who is a pastry chef. They will sell Swings coffee and pastries of all sorts. My buddy and I didn't feel fancy enough to sit on a random Tuesday evening so we ordered food at the bar. 2) The price: The prices are a bit steep for a diner. My burger with an egg and fries cost $18 before tip and taxes. That's unconventional. 3) The staff: We met two bar tenders, the hostess, and manager and all were very friendly and approachable. Diners can come with an attitude, but not this one. They are proud of their restaurant and eager to invite you into their story. 4) The atmosphere: From the wall paper to the paintings, it is more design forward than your typical diner. It's a simple, beautiful space. 5) The bar: They have a large, hand selected beer and wine list that is completed by six cocktails made by the bartender. I ordered the chardonnay for $8 and the bartender refilled my glass for free. That's customer service! What's conventional: 1) The food: My burger was good and my fries were seasoned perfectly, but it wasn't super unique. They do sell diner food with a twist, but for the prices, I expected more of a twist. My fear is the Unconventional Diner isn't here to stay, but I hope they stick around. It's an interesting concept and if the consumer can wrap their heads around their story, they may be golden. read more

Bottom: Great service and beautifully presented comfort food with a nod to the distinctive American diner. I just wanted to have a nice dinner with my husband. But dining at Unconventional Diner took me down a multi-month path of researching diners in America. More on that later. Unconventional Diner is more of a hip restaurant than a diner. Located in the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood, just steps from the Convention Center, it has a bright and clean interior that aside from some leatherette booths and round stools at the bar doesn't resemble a diner. My husband and I toasted our night out with a beer and the refreshing Bittersweet Symphony cocktail. The cocktail was dazzling and tasty. From there, things got heavier with the stir fried okra and broccolini, shiitake spring rolls and chicken parmesan. While initially very tasty, ultimately we picked dishes that as a whole were way too rich. Next time I think I would split a salad and something else. I definitely recommend the chicken parmesan. I loved that when I cut into the chicken that it ooozed cheese and the side of spaghetti is probably the best I've ever had. Service was great - friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The decor was fine for an early dinner but I have to wonder if it gets loud in the dining room. I'd love to come back to try the brunch, bakery and desserts. So back to the diner research, while having dinner I started to wonder, "What makes a diner unconventional?" and "What makes a diner a diner?" After a few months of research I've decided they there is very little resemblance between Unconventional Diner and a diner but that is just fine as it's still a great restaurant. Unconventional Diner certainly does give a nod to the classic American diner through the aforementioned decor, the dishes they use, the open kitchen and menu items like cheeseburgers, fries, pot pie poppers, meatloaf, steak and eggs and chicken noodle soup. They're not open particularly early or late like a diner and they don't serve breakfast all day but they do serve brunch daily until about 2:30pm. read more

Was in town for my birthday hanging out with friends and we stopped in here for our last brunch in DC before flying home. So glad we did! Our hostess Ashley was THE BEST. She was so cool and gave us great recommendations on the menu. Her whole vibe really added to our experience. I had the Lebanese fried rice which was such a unique brunch dish but so good. It looks sort of small at first glance but there is a lot of food packed in the bowl. Awesome flavor. We also tried the French toast (devoured it so no pic lol) and that was amazing as well, no syrup even needed for it. My friends enjoyed their dishes as well (pictured). We made reservations at 12:30pm and it was definitely super busy so recommend reserving if you can. Would love to come back and try more of the menu the next time I'm back in the DMV! read more

Loved it! Especially the chicken and waffles. I rarely ever have that combo but this experience makes me want to have it more often. There were so many options that I wanted to try, and I'm glad I got the chicken and waffles and I want to come back here if I ever visit DC again. A friend and I had brunch at Unconventional Diner a few weeks ago, and it was a pretty good brunch. We shared the Lebanese Fried Rice (with lentils, two fried eggs, yogurt, and almonds, and we added hummus and falafel) and the loaded breakfast biscuits (with house made sausage, hash browns, caramelized onions, cheez, bacon jam, and fried eggs). Both were good. The service was fine (we were running late because our MARC train was about as delayed as it could have been without just not showing up at all), but we communicated with them and they agreed to hold the table for us until we got there (we had reservations). The menu is interesting, and the interior is modern and clean. They have some outside seating as well. It wasn't a very memorable brunch maybe, but it was good, and I wouldn't mind returning for another meal in the future! read more

So freaking good, and vegan options! We stopped in for dinner- seated in outdoor area at our request. Staff helped us order- so appreciated. Hubby ordered chicken parm (I think) and loved it. I ordered something vegan with sweet potatoes and other stuffWe also had brussles- so good. Our drinks were lovely, old fashioned for me with rye and something fancy for him with cherry wood smoke and chocolate bacon garnish(?). But... so GOOD. Stopped in a few evenings late for the same drinks and carrot cake which was great. Will return the next time we are in DC. Yum. And good vegan options. read more
"10's Across the Board" This place was amazing! We were in DC for two days and wanted to make the most of our culinary experience. We found this place while googling and I quickly looked for a tik tok to confirm the food looked good. All checked out. Once we arrived we were seated immediately and friendly. The restaurant was super cute and trendy, large but still inviting. We ordered the Loaded Breakfast biscuits and the Chicken and Waffles. The Chicken and Waffle came on a cheddar and chive cornbread waffle ::mind blown:: and Habanero Butter. My boyfriend was in heaven. The chicken tenders were crispy and juicy. The loaded breakfast biscuits were a life changing experience. Enormous portion, two individually stacked biscuits. Biscuit, homemade sausage, hash brown and a perfectly fried egg topped with the best brown "sausage" gravy I've ever eaten in my life. I can't even begin to tell u how amazing the food was. My boyfriend is a chef at a Michelin Star restaurant in NYC, and his exact words were "I want to come here every-time we come to DC" and I couldn't agree more. The server was super friendly as well. Came with a group of friends from my hometown and a friend visiting from Illinois and we really enjoyed it. The pancakes aren't featured here but they look amazing. My friend who ordered the waffles also said that they're the best waffles that she has ever had. However I'm not giving it 5 stars as the person who checked me in was extremely aloof and rude. read more
Pretty good food options and overall a pleasant experience enjoying food and good conversations with friends. I got the Caribbean shrimp and grits and it was very good! I was dubious about pineapple-habanero sauce but it worked out very well. The chicken & waffles, according to both my friend and my spouse, was very good as well. The buttermilk pancakes supposedly should contain blueberry lavender but it was not really present taste-wise. We tried to taste both the pancakes and the side crumbs but neither tasted like it contained blueberry lavender. We also had to ask for a side of syrup. The Basque burnt cheesecake was something I had never seen before, but I definitely liked it. Overall if I have another chance I will visit again for sure, and order some more dishes to explore more. read more

Hopping place for brunch in the weekend. They won't seat you unless your entire party has arrived. Service was great. Blueberry pancakes were served as a huge stack. Delicious. The cheeseburger was fresh and tasty. Chicken&waffles were crudely and flavorful. For dessert, they had an in house Ferrero Rocher copy cat chocolate ball. Super delicious!!! read more

I really enjoyed unconventional diner for brunch. We made reservations for outside prior to going but asked to be switched to inside which they were able to do for us. The inside is really cute and spacious. We ordered the Ana and Eve's French Toast, the Buttermilk pancakes (blueberry and lavender), as well as a side of fries. The service was phenomenal. Our food arrived incredibly fast and our plates were cleared as we were done with them. The food was also great. I loved the french toast and the pancakes, both were the right amount of sweetness. The portion of fries was large and fries were nice and crispy. Overall I would definitely go again. read more

My boyfriend & I stopped by here since we were around the area. We came on a Tuesday night, no line, seated right away. Staff was very friendly! I also love that the staff always offered water when our cup is half full. Very attentive, I love that !! We ordered miso salmon, which came with brocollini and okra. I enjoyed this dish, it was delicious! The okra and brocollini complimented the miso salmon. We also ordered the crab linguine, which we also enjoyed. I would definitely come back for both these dishes. read more
This place is busy. The reason it is busy it's because the food is so good it makes it worth the wait. There is something here for everyone. Huge variety of options. I was too full to try dessert but I will be back to try in the future. read more

Ended up going there for lunch, the place is big, and I feel like it would be perfect for large groups. The food was okay (but extremely expensive for what it was), the pancakes however were extremely good. We ended up getting the friend chicken sandwich which was solid, the Lebanese bowl which was okay, and the kale salad which was also good. The service was also good, nothing to complain about. read more
My husband and I are in DC for the weekend and wanted to find a great brunch spot. Well we found it!! My husband got the loaded biscuit open faced sandwich and I got the S"eggy Sandwich. I switched out the fries for hash browns which were amazing!! I love the vibe and decor here. The service was excellent! The back cooking staff were definitely working hard. This place was happening when we arrived. Luckily we got to sit at the bar and were able to order some delicious food. We order the fried chicken and the shrimp and grits how long with The broccoli based on the bartenders recommendation. I think the shrimp and grits was the best part of the meal. Tons of flavor and lots of veggies and cooked really well. I thought the broccoli was too sweet and had too much sauce on it. Fried chicken was also very good, especially the gravy, and without it it wouldn't have been as good. The biscuit also had some great flavor. And, because I'm a sucker for German chocolate cake we also ended up getting that too. It was good, not great and probably not something I would order again. The service was phenomenal and I am grateful we were able to sit at the bar! Definitely would go back again! read more
Loved the place the first time we went so we needed to come back when we were in the area. We were lucky to grab a late reservation since there weren't many slots left (Valentine's weekend I guess). We got seated and greeted fairly quickly. My girlfriend ordered the Hotel California which wasn't bad, not too strong. We ordered the kale nachos and were recommended the corn bread muffins so we got that too. We received the kale nachos and the pot pie poppers by mistake. We informed our server and she was really cool about the misunderstanding and let us keep the poppers and brought us muffins. The kale nachos were just how I remembered, crunchy and had a lot of flavor from the sauces they drizzled on (not sure what the sauce is). The pot pie poppers were small fried bites of..well pot pie but it was great! Slightly better than eating an actual whole pie. The corn bread muffins were the best though. They were so buttery and sweet. The habanero butter really set it off though. I need to come here more for those alone. For entrees (we were hungry), I ordered the Lebanese Fried Rice and added on the two eggs and hummus and falafel. She ordered the crab linguini. I usually hate raisins in other food but I didn't even care, this was so good. The dish was pretty big without the add ons already so it was a lot. There were crispy lentils, perfectly done rice, falafel were huge, and the hummus and yogurt brought a nice creaminess as well. Didn't need any meat here. The crab linguini tasted good as well, didn't expect the lemon but she loved it. Had a nice creamy crab sauce and had a good amount of lump crab so they didn't really skimp. Obviously coming back soon so I can keep cycling entrees and come back for more corn muffins. read more

Delicious! My friend got the burger and she loves it. I got the miso salmon, which tastes amazing too. The environment is cozy, bright, and spacious. Service is good too. The only downside that I can find is the salmon is small, given its high price.... read more

Unconventional Diner has popped up on all of my searches for good brunch places in the DMV area, so I decided I had to give it a try a few months back in the pre-coronavirus era. We made a reservation for a Sunday morning, which was definitely necessary bc this place gets PACKED. It's a fun place to catch up with friends, and even though it's busy it isn't horribly loud, so you can still hold a conversation. I ordered the eggs Benedict with maple bacon butter and home fries and my friend got the chicken and waffles. My dish was larger than hers but both were delicious and had nixes flavors/touches to them that differentiate them from your typical brunch foods. The service was quick but not rushed. This is a fun place to try if you're looking for a good brunch with people visiting. It is on the pricier side, but it's worth it as a treat! read more

Eh. There is street parking (if you're lucky to find). However, the Mt. Vernon/Convention Metro Center is less than a block away from the restaurant.
