Walking in, I realized it was connected to a hotel. It was really nice and elegant inside. For Sunday brunch, we was able to walk right in to a table. Friendly service and attentive. I got the turkey panini, love the sauce on the sandwich with a side of spring mix salad. My sister got the ham eggs bennys. Great portions, good flavor
Fresh off an early morning flight to DCA, I met a friend for breakfast before work. We had a reservation, but we could've walked in and been seated. Breakfast was fantastic! She had the crème brûlée French toast and bacon. I had the loaded breakfast biscuits without the fried eggs. It was delicious! Server was friendly and attentive, it's a cute place! Easy to get to via metro, too.
$20 Resy deposit for reservation. You will need to cancel atl east 30 mins prior to your reservation time, so you won't get charged. Less than 5 minute walk from the Convention Center Metro I had the Lox and a side of grits. Both were very good. The Lox looks small, but it was very filling and comes with an egg underneath the salmon Sparkling water is enough for 2 people
Brunch at Unconventional Diner is a DC must! The service is impeccable and friendly, and the menu has a nice variety of culinary options, though, I don't feel like there's much of hearty vegetarian options or substitutions. Outdoor seating is nice and quaint, and covered. And plenty of street parking is available. Overall, I highly recommend!
High quality elevated diner food at a reasonable price in DC. Brunch is an option every day before 3:45PM. Recommend the corned beef hash. Big chunks of meat, potato with roasted onions and celery, all with a black pepper gravy. Comes with two sunny-side eggs. You will be stuffed. Biscuits are great too. Coffee is solid. True to its name, Unconventional Diner is not your average brunch spot - it delivers on fun and unique dishes (available until 3:45pm). The Tikka dish with fried egg was tasty, but wish paneer or larger protein option was built-in (not an upcharge)! The creamy red Tikka curry sauce, caramelized onions, crispy brussel sprouts, and fried ere tasty and paired well, the dish felt incomplete and something was missing, maybe some paneer or naan? I paid $5 for a side of zesty naan topped with different spices and really wish it came with the dish just came with it. While I was tempted to order the falafel, I couldn't justify shelling out another $5 for another upcharge and spend $10 on them for a total of $26 for just an entree - when these 2 upcharges should have been included in the entree by default. Wish there were more fun vegetarian dishes on the menu. Might come back for drinks and to explore the menu!
I had a nice conventional brunch at the Unconventional Diner. Well maybe the fried egg on top of roasted artichoke is unconventional. But I also had the fluffy buttermilk pancakes, which I had to try since it seemed every other person sitting at the bar was enjoying. Overall I had a very enjoyable meal. The food was delicious. Service was friendly. Food was delivered very promptly. I highly recommend the diner with the unconventional name.
Very busy breakfast/brunch spot in DC. I had a few hours to kill before my flight and after an early Amtrak arrival into Union station. This place was worth switching metro lines from Union station (and kept me out of the rain!). I had the chicken and waffles. Delicious with a kick! The coffee is excellent and strong but not nearly as strong as the cinnamon toast old-fashioned! All of it was delicious. Since I didn't have a reservation, I sat at the bar, where the service was as good as I imagine sitting at a table would have been. Would love to come back and try other tempting menu items.
The good: the restaurant is definitely clean and our food came out quickly. The chicken and waffles were really good! I enjoyed the cornbread waffles and the sauces they game with. The meh: they didn't have space for strollers or have high chairs. They only offered a booster that doesn't have straps. My baby is a wiggler and high chairs are a must when we go out to eat
Yep. If you're reading this, you should just make that reservation and go... and yes, I would recommend a reservation because this place is pop-u-lar, and I see why. The space itself is bright and airy and a bit on the noisy side. But the service was very good, and the food was served quite quickly. I've been on a shakshuka kick lately, so I opted for the the Sweet Potato Shakshuka, which is described as: Sweet Potato Curry, with Chickpeas and Sunny Eggs with a the chicken add-on - gotta get that protein in, after all. This was one of the most unique shakshukas I'd ever had... It literally tasted like a curry dish you might get at your local Indian restaurant, with a bit of a brunch flair to it. The curry itself had a wee bit of spice and was a bit sweet - but that could have been from the sweet potatoes. The chicken was served in a bowl on the side, which felt a bit... odd... I would've expected it to be incorporated into the main dish. It was kind of bland and a bit lukewarm, so I don't know that I'd order that again... but I would definitely order this again!
Made reservation for a Saturday early dinner as reviews said to make one if not willing to wait. Got to the restaurant on time, seemed to be a slow Saturday early evening as I saw a lot of empty tables. Maybe they were all reserved? Not sure. We were greeted by the staffs and shown to the table. Smooth and fast. All the menu looked tempting so had hard time choosing which one to go with. Went with meatloaf and miso salmon. Meatloaf was really good! Flavorful with tender/juicy meat combined with onions, bell peppers etc. Miso salmon was also good! Okra and broccoli were adding more taste to the dish itself. No complaints at all! The prices were on the higher side though. Menu says each are $28. However, there was mandatory service charge of 20% and tax was calculated after the service charge, which end up being approximately $40 per menu item we got - miso salmon and meatloaf. Wish the menu price would just include service charges so prices would not be misleading with all the charges after. Not sure if this is because of World Cup 2026, but too bad they had to hit their customers with extra fees after enjoying the meals which could have ended happily rather than leaving a bad taste in the mouth.
We had a Monday dinner reservation during summer restaurant week. Greeted and seated by front desk. More space than I expected but sounds are probably my amplified by the tile floors. Before others arrived I met our waiter, Mauricio, who asked if I wanted a cocktail while I waited for the other ladies to arrive. We all had looked up the menu and was excited to try all of the entrees. I ordered the shrimp and grits which I thought I knew what it would taste like. Boy, was I wrong! It was so "unconventional " and in an absolutely delicious way. Chicken sausage, large shrimp, okra, peppers and more, laid on a bed of grits that are so emulsified, I forgot they were grits (really). Lastly, I ordered a non-alcoholic drink, top top chop salad (don't be afraid of the kale) and carrot cake for a small sweet ending. All of the items came out quickly.
Cool spot for brunch/breakfast. We were staying at a nearby hotel and wanted to grab a bite to eat. We had a big party and thought the wait would be over an hour but they were able to accommodate us in less than 30 minutes. Service was great. Food came out fast and everything was tasty. My only complaint is they do not have Any espresso based drinks. They have an iced latte but they admitted it was made with cold brew. I just wanted a good espresso with my breakfast. But other than that everything was excellent.

Had brunch here over the weekend. It's definitely a lively and popular brunch spot in DC -- there was a solid crowd, but my party had a reservation which worked out perfectly. Our server was okay, nothing special, and the food was decent overall. I really enjoyed the crème brûlée French toast -- that was the highlight for me. My friends ordered the Lebanese Fried Rice with shrimp and the Greek Full-Dead salad with salmon. Overall, I'd give the experience and food a solid 7/10. A couple of point deductions because it took quite a while for us to get our drink orders, and twice the food runners brought dishes meant for another table -- likely a mis-entry on our server's part. read more

Ordered: - Lebanese Fried Rice (5/5): I got this with the miso salmon but in retrospect the dish was fine by itself, especially considering the price increase with the salmon. I also thought the salmon would have been integrated into the dish, not served on the side. That aside (no pun intended) I was a big fan of the main dish itself. As someone accustomed to East Asian fried rice, this was a refreshing experience for me and I enjoyed the novelty of the different grains, usage of yogurt, and just the overall pleasant flavors of the dish. My gf on the other hand did not enjoy it as much because it's not a classic - Loaded Breakfast Biscuits (4.5/5): A real heavy but delicious breakfast item for those that love breakfast foods! Definitely would recommend splitting with someone else or getting another small item that can help cut through the heaviness of this dish. Overall (4/5): We loved the unique menu items and would come back to try more things. It's on the pricier side and the items seem to be more lunch than breakfast leaning but the portions are huge. We also loved the interior decoration and vibes and how the restaurant seemed split into sections. It was pretty quiet on a weekday morning but service was still slow though. read more

I've been here twice in the past week because I just cannot get enough. Everything we've had is delicious-- the buttermilk pancakes covered in blueberry lavender deliciousness with marscapone, the chicken & waffles made with a chive cornbread, the skillet cornbread, pot pie poppers, the fried chicken sandwich with fries, the delectable chicken parm stuffed with spinach and fontina... everything made my mouth water. I was twice part of the clear plate club. Our one exception to the excellence was the Philly French Double Dip which had a lot of fat on it and not the juicy kind you want to eat. I've had multiple servers (both of which I forget their names) that were top notch-- friendly, not hovering but attentive. We'll continue to return to the Unconventional Diner to try other menu items and will be bringing friends along too! I'd recommend making a reservation on the weekends, as it can get pretty busy. This place is so good. I'm forever going to compare a pancake to the ones here today. Fluffy soft but full of flavor that blueberry compote delicious. Loved the chicken and waffle of course, interesting to see the tender route but love it the grandmas gravy was different glad they put it on the side. The garlic naan was great as well, little bit burnt on a couple of pieces but the garlic flavor was so so good. Inside was clean, tidy and the they move tables quick! What a great brunch's spot. Love the vibes, gives old fashioned diner with modern twist. Their plates even look like paper plates, but they're ceramic. The service was fabulous. It took a little while to get hot coffee but that is my only negative. We ordered the blueberry lavender pancakes, sexy sandwich, and the loaded biscuits. The pancakes were delicious. I've had a lot of people recommend this place and boy was I was disappointed. Not once but twice. We ordered a lot of food,from meatloaf to fried chicken. Arguably one of the worst meals I've ever had. I am not the target audience. The food had no flavor. NONE. The service was spectacular and even the ambiance was nice. The Unconventional Diner was hopping! Even at 2 in the afternoon the place was completely full with waves of people eating and enjoying. Our wonderful server said it was always a steady flow like this. Even with all the customers, service was excellent and the wait for our food was very normal. We were never rushed to order or to clear the table. On this day, we enjoyed a variety of desserts and drinks, including the chocolate cake, carrot cake and ice cream sundae. As warned by our server, the servings were generous. The desserts were fresh and sweet but not too sweet. Not able to finish any of the desserts - we were warned - we took them home and the left overs were as good the next day (especially if you allow them to warm up a little after being in the fridge.) The brownie under the sundae was great and gooey. We were expected more of a peanut butter flavor but I'm not going to complain when it is that chocolatey. The teas and coffees were good but nothing beyond what is expected. Next time we will have to explore the savory side of the menu. Looking at the orders as they made their way out of the kitchen would have made us really hungry if we weren't completely full from the sweet side. There is street parking all around. With the crowds we saw, even though the space is large, we recommend making a reservation to dine. read more

BILLING CAUTION!! If you choose to use the little button on the table to pay the bill, note that it charges two dollars per person for each person that is splitting the bill. It also automatically adds 20% on which is OK except for it's not obvious as it is constantly is asking if you want to add more tip For example $53 bill auto added $19 in tip taxes and processing fees. This was my third visit to Unconventional Diner--and I've got to say, third time's the charm. The first two visits didn't wow me, but today's crème brûlée French toast completely changed the game. I'm already plotting my return just for that sweet, dreamy plate. Service is solid and the food comes out fast, which I appreciate--especially when dining with kids. Speaking of which, my only real gripe is that there's no kids menu. Brunch is kind of our thing, and my little ones weren't too impressed with the chicken tenders. But the saving grace? The vanilla and mango-passionfruit ice cream. Big hits. My friend ordered the blueberry-lavender pancakes and raved about how fluffy, light, and satisfying they were--a perfect springtime treat. Came here on a whim while in the neighborhood. They have a menu that has so many appealing sounding dishes, and it was hard for me to decide. I went with the French Dip Poutine and my wife had the chicken and waffles. Both were outstanding. The gravy on the poutine was parfait and the cheese hit the spot. I also loved the onions. I just thought some of the meat was dry. My wife was initially wondering if she hadn't been adventurous enough with her order, but that doubt immediately went away after her first bite. She loved the taste, and said it was just the right blend of flavors. Service was friendly. We were here on a Thursday morning, and it was quite active; I can only imagine what it is like on the weekend! Definitely recommend, it's a great spot. read more
I normally hate the phrase New American because I always feel somewhat scammed when I go to restaurants that claim that title. This place was very popular, and while getting a reservation was difficult, it was not impossible. If dining with a group, the menu is diverse enough that most people should be able to find something they like. The presentation was fantastic and each dish was beautifully plated. They add a 20% service fee for their staff, which is understandable given how crowded the restaurant gets. It was expensive though. We decided to skip drinks since they were over 7 dollars and based on the menu and reviews, they did not seem worth it on top of the already high food prices. It also looks like they recently raised their prices because the menus on Yelp did not match the one we received. Service was quick and attentive. Attended dinner here with some friends to celebrate some birthdays. I had heard of this place for some time but never got around to eating here. Today was finally the day! We ordered Moroccan taquitos and cornbread for appetizers. Both were delicious. I would get the cornbread again. Pleasantly surprised on how good it tasted and was served with hot honey on top. For entrees I got the meatloaf. The flavor was really good and perfectly cooked. The Gruyère cheese in the middle was an excellent touch. My only critique about the meatloaf was it had a bit too much ketchup for my liking. I'm not a big ketchup fan in general and I found unconventional diner's ketchup to be on the sweeter side. The sauce on the bottom of the meatloaf was very nice. It was a creamy mushroom sauce that was a nice touch as it didn't overpower the dish. The fried chicken sandwich (although I didn't eat) looked amazing and my friends enjoyed it. The miso salmon I will definitely have to come back and get as it looked delicious. The star of the show was the carrot cake. The Carmel drizzle on top was really good and was homemade for sure. The death by chocolate cake was good, a bit on the drier side toward end of it. Overall a great place to eat and the food exceeded my expectations. The service was wonderful as well. I forgot the young lady who was serving us but she had awesome recommendations and was super attentive to our table. We always come here for lunch during the National Book Festival, and it did not disappoint. We got the loaded breakfast biscuits and the sweet potato shakshuka with coffee to drink. What I love is how much thought goes into each dish - the sweet and savory bacon jam combined with the salty pork sausage and the crunch of the hash brown square, with a runny egg and buttery biscuit all added up to an amazing bite. This is one heck of a diner! While visiting friends in Maryland, our host decided on a nearby place to have brunch. The Unconventional Diner is known for its great-tasting and uncommon meals. Upon arrival, the place was packed, and the wait to be seated felt long. Our Grubbing Party grew to a total of six but, fortunately, our brunch meals came quite quickly. The three men, including me, chose different variations of Sweet Potato Shaksuka, which was delicious. The ladies ordered Corned-Beef Hash, an amazing Avocado Toast and a scrumptious-looking Crème Brûlée French Toast. Besides sparkling and still water, our drinks included my favorite espresso martini, while my Grubbing Buddy enjoyed a spicy Bloody Mary (her favorite) with extra shrimp. The hostess and the waitstaff were very pleasant and attentive, and my friends and I enjoyed a wonderful Sunday brunch. I'm not sure when I'll return to the diner, but I do know I would love to try their dinner menu soon. read more

stumbled upon Unconventional Diner and was immediately drawn in by the vibe. The space is ridiculously chill - think industrial-chic meets cozy coffee shop. It's the perfect spot to grab a bite and catch up with friends or get some work done. For me, the real draw is the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and laid-back, and there's always something interesting to look at, whether it's the eclectic decor or the lively crowd. Second time back and I'm so glad I've returned. Ordered the chicken and waffles. Best chicken and waffles I've ever had. Chicken was juicy, a lil crispy, and had seasoning which I liked. The cornbread waffle was next level, just wish they gave me more than one!! Please add another waffle!!!! Gravy was solid too. My wife's sweet potato shakshouka was delicious as well. Very flavorful and saucy, so we got a naan (bread) to soak up that goodness. Def get it with chicken, can't go wrong with extra protein. Came to Unconventional Diner with some friends and wow it was amazing! As an appetizer I tried their kale chips. They were so light and airy, which was so great to enjoy all other meals. For the entrees me and my friends shared the duck where we could make out own buns. It came with fresh vegetables and a delicious sauce! The duck was cooked perfectly. We also shared the chicken parm with spaghetti. This was my favorite!! It was soooo good I highly recommended it. The noodles are cooked so good, the texture is unlike other pasta. The parm was stuffed with cheese, I loved it. For dessert we ordered their chocolate cake. Although this was the last day of the chocolate cake, they were going to change up the menu the next day and put something else. But it was soo rich and delicious. For drinks I ordered the hot cider/bourbon drink. This really packed a good punch. And my friends ordered a side car and espresso martini. Service was amazing! Although I'm not here as often as I would like because it's a bit far, this continues to be one of my favorite spots. On this occasion I was meeting up with a friend who was in town for business. We met for a late lunch / early dinner. The best PART... Is that they serve brunch everyday until 3:45! Yay!!!! I absolutely love their shrimp and grits so that is what I got on this visit. My friend was seated before me and had her eye on the pancakes at the next table. She ordered a stack and I had some myself. OMG they were perfect! The blueberry sauce or whatever it was added to moistness (for lack of a better term). They were topped with big ole, plump blueberries. We both got a side of bacon and their bacon is divine! The blueberry pancakes were unbelievably fluffy with a sort of bounce to them & had the perfect berry glaze compote with a nice hint of lemon to cut through the sweetened as well as brown sugar crumbs for texture. I also got the loaded breakfast biscuits to try & they didn't feel too heavy despite how many hearty ingredients there are. It blended very well. I asked for a side of hot sauce to pour on them because they did need a little heat to cut through the savory flavors. Also, the home made biscuit with jam was unreal. The service was great! Our waiter was very fast and constantly refilled our drinks without us having to ask! Our waiter was also so wonderful despite the place being PACKED. Definitely make sure you make a reservation before hand as the wait time was almost an hour and a half from what I overheard. There was also a volley ball tournament at the convention center next door so that also probably contributed to the restaurant being super packed. As for the food, the food came out super quick. The French dip poutine was wonderful! The loaded biscuits were good but I'll pass on those next time. The match latte (not pictured) was divine. Soooo good! It's definitely a strong matcha with an earthy taste but so good. The ambiance of the restaurant was really nice. It definitely felt like an elevated take on breakfast. Honestly this place was on my list to try and I was in the area after leaving the convention center.Me and my daughter stopped in around 2:00 PM and we were immediately sat in a nice booth in the corner. The server came over we placed our order for drinks. the drinks were good. I had a French 75 my daughter ordered the fruit punch and then we placed our meal orders. I got the Caesar salad with chicken and my daughter. Got the chicken and waffles. Now I will say my daughter said the chicken and waffles was good and it was a good size. My salad was a Caesar salad and there was a good amount of chicken. My only issue is how expensive all of this was we paid $100 with 20% gratuity automatically added to the bill. So a little too expensive for me, but the food was decent enough so if you're in the area and you have that money, check it out. read more

Loved the flavors of the food served at this restaurant! Shakshuka had a sweet and acidic taste that paired perfectly with the naan (additional charge). I also really enjoyed the poutine despite it being really oily. The flavors were great but the fries at the bottom were drenched in oil so we were unable to finish it. It's a STRONG yes!! I am so glad I added this spot to my list of places to check out while visiting the city. Lucky for me- I was staying at a hotel within walking distance! My Neice and I arrived mid day and were able to walk in and be seated immediately. After being seated we were immediately greeted by our wait staff. The waiter was very nice and knowledgeable. He gave us multiple recommendations and also let us sample a drink to see if we wanted to order it. I ordered the sweet potato shakshuka and a matcha latte. My niece ordered the chicken and waffles. My meal was amazing! The shakshuka curry flavor was delightful. I honestly was thinking about this meal days later. My nieces chicken and waffles were so unique.
