The quality of the ingredients and attention to detail are apparent in every bite and every sip. It is well worth the wait you'll most likely encounter. No matter how busy they are, the staff will greet you warmly--even coming out with umbrellas like they did for us when it was raining--and take the time to help you order, converse, and genuinely make you feel welcome. There are limited tables inside to enjoy your haul, but if you're lucky, a spot will open up and spare your car from the flaky goodness that will inevitably rain down all over your clothes and upholstery. That being said, I do believe the quality is one of the best, so worth it if you happen to be in the area and don't mind a bit of a wait. You can see them making the baked goods in the store and the dough is a work of art. There seems to always be some kind of wait and the outside wait is a tad brutal, but there are a bunch of umbrellas you can borrow from the inside, which is a nice gesture from this place. Onto the goods - the chocolate bars are quite steep. Two of these plus a matcha latte and a single chocolate croissant was around $47, so keep that in mind before you stack too much in your cart. The matcha latte was passable in my opinion as well, since the matcha doesn't stand out. A lot of oat milk was used in mine, which diluted most of the matcha. I guess stick to what they are good at. The standout of course is the chocolate croissant. It's quite flaky. Where the surprise comes in is that there seems to be a custard layer inside, along with melted chocolate around the outer parts of the croissant. It's a unique experience and recommend trying while it's hot.

The hostess was very apologetic and was trying to work out a solution which led to the Floor Manager (Karla) getting involved. We were eventually seated at another table, with the option to move should the other table become available. Karla then took the time to apologize for the wait and unfortunate first impression. As we got started with drinks and a pastry for the daughter, the other table opened. The hostess immediately came to move us. It all went smoothly from there. Table service was casual and attentive. We started with the Chocolate Almond Croissant and the Baguette & Bordier Butter. The daughter tried the Iced Matcha Latte. For our entrées -- Shakshuka, Patty Melt and Brioche Eggs Benedict (with salmon). I was eager to try the Potato Gravlax, but it was sold out. :( Everything was so, so delicious! Fresh and flavorful. We all really enjoyed it with the mango sauce. I made the mistake of eating the pancake first before trying a sip of my tea. The pancake was pretty sweet, so I could barely taste my drink, but I think it was good? I could taste a bit of the lemon but definitely not the white peach, which is a lighter flavor. I got a slice of their Hokkaido cheese cake roll for $7 to go and had it the next day. It was okay but definitely a bit pricy for what you get. I couldn't see myself studying or staying too long, which may be for the best since parking is tricky and street parking has a 2 hour limit. An okay experience, but I don't see myself coming back.

We bought potato chips separately from a rack near the checkout counter and I picked up a chocolate croissant for breakfast the next morning cause I knew how good the pastries were. The food came out in about 20 minutes. We had arrived right at noon when the place is packed. The sandwich was scrumptious. The fresh bread was a great holder for the oozing cheese and lightly heated turkey with the onions on top, giving it a nice smoky flavor. My little bottle of Martinelli's apple juice was the perfect tart accompaniment, and my husband had lemonade. We talked and visited and enjoyed this mini family reunion in such a warm and convivial atmosphere !

Moving to California... you sort of get the impression that it's going to be all sticks & twigs and lowfat. I thought... where am I going to find my happiness? Union Bakery. Down home-out of granma's kitchen cooking and then some! The pasteries are fantastic! The sandwiches ... worth their weight in gold! Love the turkey on potato bread... if I needed home cooking with flair this is my go-to place! A great place to go in the early morning to get a cup of coffee and cinnamon roll. What's new is old. Very happy to see this place prospering. When I was 10 in 1967 this place was a bakery although I don't recall the name. It went out of business within a few years and the shop was a variety of things, including a video rental place in the '80's. Glad it's back, although i'm out of state now. read more

The food in Union Bakery is excellent. The egg salad and capers sandwiches with fresh baked bread are so good that we keep going back for more. I also had the cranberry muffins a couple of times. It is out of this world. I highly recommend this place for breakfast and lunch. read more

I won't completely write Tartine off based on one visit, especially since both the loaves and their famous morning buns were sold out by the time we arrived. The pastries we did try were overly sweet for our taste, and having just visited Artisanal Goods by CAR, we felt CAR's pastries were on another level. The sandwiches, however, were good--really good--and easily one of the highlights of our visit. But the "side" they came with... And then there were the carrots. Each sandwich came accompanied by one. Singular. Pickled. Painfully skinny. Carrot. Dramatically sprawled across the tray as though it had been carefully selected for the sacrifice. I'm still not entirely sure whether it was a side dish or a garnish that had lost its way. Surprisingly, they were actually very good pickled carrots, but I'll never forget the presentation. At least give me a couple if they're going to be that small--or perhaps one with a little more girth. Words fail me. The biggest disappointment was the country bread with cultured butter and jam. Since they didn't have any loaves left to take home, I specifically ordered the bread untoasted, as I was really excited to finally taste Tartine's famous country loaf--which I've baked over and over again at home using Chad Robertson's book. Instead, the slices arrived griddled and already saturated with butter, with more served on the side. For me, it completely overwhelmed what should have been the star of the plate: that delicate, beautifully made bread. I simply wanted to taste the slices on their own and let the cultured butter and excellent seasonal jam--which was fantastic--complement it. All in all, it was a frustrating first visit, especially after looking forward to Tartine for so many years. There were certainly bright spots (yes, even the mysterious carrot), and I wouldn't hesitate to give Tartine another chance--perhaps at the original San Francisco location someday--but this particular visit didn't live up to expectations.

Even with tip that comes up less than the cost at Europane. I suspect that the business is failing, and the owner is trying a last-ditch effort to make a little money before going out of business for good, but I don't think trying to milk customers for money is a good plan. Someone ran to Ralph's and grabbed gel pens and added this sloppy rainbow before my husband picked up the order to cover their mistake. I texted the number that I corresponded with photos of the cake and how disappointed I was, and never heard back with an apology or a refund. Save yourself a headache and go elsewhere. Also for reference this was $45 for a 4" vegan cake. I don't even feel confident it was vegan given the poor design job.

I was expecting a bit more walking into the bakery. I expected to see a bit more of the bakery…read moreitems in display. We ended going for the red velvet cupcake which was just okay, it wasn't overly sweet which is great but the flavor to the cake wasn't really there. The cream cheese frosting was just okay as well, for whatever reason it didn't really complement the cake. Service was good. In terms of ambiance, there is only outdoor seating which is a little difficult in the hot summer months.
