Been wanting to come here for a while. I was in the area today and stopped by around 12 pm. I was very underwhelmed with the selection of goodies. There was one row of desserts that didn't look appetizing and unbelievably dry. Since I went out of my way to come here I got the only thing that looked somewhat decent, chocolate cupcake. That small cupcake was $4. I was so upset. I was counting on it being delicious so I could at least justify spending so much on a small cupcake. It was dry and was lacking flavor. It seriously tasted like boxed chocolate cake mix. That's how awful it was. I kept telling myself that maybe it's nearing the end of the day so they didn't have as much to sell. This is a dangerous place because they have the best sandwiches in South Pas WITH baked desserts and awesome homemade soups. I spend more on lunch here than anywhere else cause my wife expects me to come home with their Black Forest Ham AND a baked dessert (cupcake, biscotti, apple turnover) and their Veggie Curry soup. She simply has bad customer service skills, and probably shouldn't be assisting customers but rather stick to baking. Normally their savory tarts are not available so early in the morning, but we lucked out on a Sunday. The MUSHROOM AND GOAT CHEESE TART was really good! Get it even if you don't feel like having it for breakfast because they sell out. We also tried the CHOCOLATE CROISSANT. The croissant was flakey with a good amount of creamy chocolate in the center. I enjoyed it, but don't know how it compares to other ones since I don't normally order this. The decor of the bakery -- both inside and out -- however, is very minimal...plain. Not a place you'd find yourself hanging out noshing on pastries over a cup of coffee with friends. And, you would easily pass on this place driving by. Should've left after trying to order, I decided to tough it out and decided... I should've left. I ordered a sandwich but they didn't have half of the breads they offered. Not a good start for a bakery. My wife wanted to order the soup of the day, but they were out. Okay, how about this soup, nope; that soup; actually we don't have any soup either. Sweet thanks. Union bakery is such a small little place on Fair Oaks that I never noticed it until looking at the reviews on Yelp. After seeing all the pictures and hearing about these cinnamon rolls (aka my weakness) I had to come!!! Unfortunately when I was there, they had already ran out! But I did learn that they close at 4pm so when I went in around 12pm they had already began to run out of certain items! SO COME AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. I ended up getting two personal apple pies, a strawberry cupcake, and a chocolate cupcake. ALL DELICIOUS. By the way everything they sell is so adorable and small and delectable. It just makes you feel special. BUT BY FAR THE BEST PURCHASE was a loaf of their crusty sourdough bread!!!! I don't even like sourdough bread that much but I bought it for my brother because I felt like being nice. BUT IN THE END IT WAS ALL MINE. The bread is not even that sourdough-y. Its more floury. AND they slice it so perfectly and thin perfect for toast. *ask them to slice* It is really just heaven....so soft....so perfect... Who knew this little corner family bakery was such a hidden gem in South Pas! JUST GO AND BUY ALL THE BREAD. OH AND for parking just turn at the light for the REALLY tight parking in the back. The cranberry scones are so dry and crumbly, there is no point in trying to swallow a bite of it without a gallon of liquid to wash it down. I've had amazing scones from tiny bakeries and they are moist and delicious. Definitely not worth $2.50 for a grainy dry scone. read more

It will do for what it is. My only gripe is that there aren't labels on the trays of the pastries that let you know what they are and what their prices are. With that said, I got jipped! I ordered a square puff pastry with mushrooms, a chocolate chip cookie and a small coffee and my total came out to $8.25. The puff pastry with mushrooms was absurdly priced at $5.00!! When I walked into Union Bakery I knew I'd truly found a perfect little home-town bakery. The case was filled with flaky cinnamon rolls, perfectly fried and frosted donuts, large scones, and lovely breakfast muffins. I asked for a cup of coffee and the girl-behind-the-counter's favorite. She handed me a cup and a marion berry scone. The scone just fell apart and melted in your mouth. With the high, acidic and sweet, notes of marionberry laced throughout the pasty each bite became a sheer delight. It was seriously addictive. The coffee tasted like just a typical run-of-the-mill drip, but elevated by the scone I happily enjoyed that coffee. It's the perfect little place to drop by on the way to work, to grab a sweet brunch with your sweetheart or to enjoy a coffee and a scone with the paper. Simply wonderful. read more

Came here after a jog around the Rose Bowl. Its a cute little corner bakery that pulls you in as you drive by it. I ordered a cappuccino, a sugar cookie, and a cherry/cheese danish. Coffee was okay, I give it a solid B. The sugar cookie felt like a home made cookie in the sense of maybe your mom or your sister made sugar cookies one day in the oven and brought them out to family. That's what the sugar cookie reminds me of, its not like what I've come to expect from most commercial sugar cookie makers the nice pillowy texture and chewness, with a sweet frosting on top. The cookie is good, but I think the experience it invokes is nice. The danish was the winner, the bread wasn't too sweet, it had a subtle sweetness, great texture / crispiness, and the cheese and cherries were perfect. The flavor, freshness, and combination was spectacular and gives this place more credit. Its a mom and pop place so I always give these businesses more brownies points for trying to differentiate themselves from coffee bean or starbucks. read more

No eggs except for quiche which is pretty damn good as it and everything here is homemade. No bagels for you bagel nuts and no donuts but a small selection of fresh pastries. read more

I must have walked right by it at least 5 times before someone had to tell me it was there. It looks condemned on the outside. The inside was much better. I'm not sure if the cupcake had been sitting there all day, but I got the last ones on my second visit. They both tasted like corn bread with food coloring. What can you complain about? the fruit tart was freshly made based on the availability the farmers market have to offer every Thursday in South Pasadena. As the ingredient is picked up freshly, I think the price is reasonable. The taste! the tomato soup is a must try. my favorite beef sandwich has home made mustard in it, making it perfect. I really like this place, head there about once a week to pick up a loaf and or pastries (I alternate). Everything is -really- good. My favorites are the country loaf, cranberry muffin and that xtra large muffin they have, blueberry i think. Owner and staff are friendly, service quick. They also have fresh squeezed OJ on ice, and an expresso machine. If they start stocking soy and or almond milk ill try the coffee there. Do that and add soft boiled eggs to the menu, it'll be a one stop shop for me for breakfast. read more

A fresh place with subtle desserts. The apricot "danish" was just spectacular. Easy on the sugar was the key. You could actually taste the fruit and the butter in the bread without needing a drink of water to counteract the sugar. The coffee hit the spot. The pumpkin pie was my favorite. Not over sweetened.
