I travel fairly frequently and for very long distances generally. United is consistently efficient for me. I have no trouble with bags, no loss, or damage. They are timely by airline standards I believe. I have zero complaints about their customer service, be it call center, ticketing agents, gate agents, or flight attendants. And I'm here writing this review which means most importantly they got me from A to B then back to A in one piece. Well done, United! read more

Meh, I have experienced better.... but wait, you say, how can it get better than United Airlines???!!!! Two words... "Singapore Airlines". Honestly, all US airlines are pretty much the same. Bland food, dry box lunches, mediocre customer service, delayed flights, surly gate agents, lost luggage, seat cushions made of concrete, long security lines, and mutants that fly once every 10 years that all crowd up the boarding gate as soon pre-boarding is called. Granted, not all of those things are the airlines' fault, but the over-all experience of flying just makes me want to stay home. I end up flying about 100,000 miles most years. Living in Honolulu, that is not hard to do if you fly to the West Coast very often. One of the things that makes traveling a bit more tolerable is to become a member of an airlines frequent flyer program. This entitles you to priority boarding (if you can get past the mutants waiting for zone 7 to be called) and potentially to get complimentary upgrades. For the uninitiated, complementary upgrades are the holy grail of frequently flyers. I was a loyal Delta frequent flyer for many years (well over 1,000,000 miles), but Delta's complementary upgrade policy for flights to Hawaii continued to degrade to the point that it was impossible to get an upgrade. United's complementary upgrade policy was much more liberal and frequent flyer friendly, so.... adios Delta! My experiences on United have been reasonably good, just as good as Delta. And, my experiences have definitely been better as a United 1K level flyer. I have gotten complementary upgrades a reasonably good percentage of the time. Early boarding is a nice perk, too. Getting in to the "gold line" at TSA is also a nice perk. The food on United is no better than any other airline. Some of the box lunches they sell in Economy are okay, but mostly dry and tasteless. The reason that I have given United only 2 stars rather than 3 is that they have changed their premier level qualification policies. Now, not only do you have to fly a minimum number of miles, but you have to ALSO spend a minimum amount of money. So, as if having to fly X number of miles a year is not enough, you have to fork over more money for higher fare tickets. I'm sure this will make the higher tiers of their frequently flyer programs more desirable because there will be fewer people that can attain them. But, for those of us that always buy the cheapest fare available, this smells like yesterday's diapers. read more

i dont know where to begin flying is no longer glamorous, but it doesnt need to be like this. The illusion of status, and the lines to board are really becoming quite annoying. its sad what we have become because of our chase for "status". Global Services are the only members they really care about. The 1ks (100,000 mile fliers) are really not worth anything anymore either. since the merger, the upside was some planes with TVs and Wifi that Continental had. United has brought nothing to the table except water down both brands. Its a shame and unfortunately unless you plan on spending 20k or more on domestic and international travel, i would go with Southwest all the way. read more

My flight was delayed 15 minutes which turned to 30 minutes and now it's over 2 hour delay! That's why I try never to book connecting flights with UA for less than 1 1/2 hours between. read more

Oh....let' see....criteria in airlines for me.... 1. You need to have flights that go to Korea....and that will help me keep my miles on SkyTeam. With United in Star Alliance, you're just not it. 2. You need to have a friendly staff. With 95% of your attendants either being too tired or too damn ornery for my tastes, this doesn't bode well for you. 3. You should have a great frequent flier program. Ahhh, another one where you're lacking. 4. You don't participate in American Express' airport lounge program. The only plus for United is that they have direct flights into Las Vegas where as my SkyTeam folks do not. But it's not enough to convince me not to spend an additional two hours on my route to 1) get upgraded to first class and 2) use the lounges in the airports. Who wouldn't mind not having access to their luggage for an overnight in Virginia--and rolling into Rome in 2-day old clothes? united airlines has been my choice of airline carrier for the better part of my adult life. having grown up in the metro-DC area and needing to fly out of IAD for most of my travel needs, united was the obvious choice since IAD is one of its major hubs. generally, my experience with united is very good. re cross country flights, i find that most times, the flights arrive early or on time, which is great. i attribute this to good flying conditions and cross winds, which help the aircraft to maintain a good airspeed. the flight attendants are generally very friendly and helpful, and greet you with a smile when you board and de-plane. re the seats, they offer first, business, economy plus, and regular economy on board. even though i was in regular economy, i felt that the leg room was sufficient and that the seats were reasonably comfortable and reclined to a decent angle. i fell asleep for several hours, which is a good sign. they still offer complimentary drinks, but you have to pay for food. at least they offer a good variety of food items, sandwiches, chips, cookies, snack boxes, etc. i had brought my own food on board (since i'm not a fan of their prices) and they were kind enough to give me a set of utensils upon request. on this last experience flying from IAD-SFO, my flight was delayed by an hour, and of course, i wasn't aware of this until i arrived at the gate, well in advance of the originally scheduled flight time. the conditions in washington were great, clear skies with no threat of inclement weather. i was told that the conditions in san francisco were not ideal, foggy conditions, which makes life difficult for the pilot and co-pilot. after an hour, we sat on the tarmac for quite a spell before taking off. overall, the flight felt like a neverending experience, much longer than the 6 hours of actual flight time. and when i arrived at SFO, i looked up and thought, "where is the fog?" to me, the skies looked fine to me, so i wasn't sure why there was such a delay. san francisco seemed perfect to me. a mixed review for this last trip i took. hopefully, my experience will be improved on my next trip, as i'm expecting to make several trips with united over the course of the next year. read more

Good airlines are so hard to find these days...unless you count Virgin! BUT, alas Virgin does not fly to all the places I need to go, so I opt for United (because I REALLY am not a fan of American). My pet peeves: Changing your flights or cancelling your flights and forcing you onto other flights. Makes trying to plan vacations challenging, especially when you have to take connecting flights! Charging for checked in luggage - okay, so most airlines are doing this now...but come on! also, be aware of how much your luggage weighs because if it's over 50 pounds, you'll get charged more! What I do appreciate about United: They offer more direct flights (than American) and that is a plus. Worst flight experience of my life and I've travelled a lot in the past 10 years (away on business 750 days in the last five years). It started at the check in line. Needed a card swipe from an employee to get my bag checked (military on orders). I guess waving my arm doesn't constitute a need for help in the employee training they get. Got to the attendant to drop my bag off and asked for a refund. I was told I'd have to get in another long line because he was unable or unwilling to help. I'm not sure which. AC at the gate wasn't working waited in a muggy 85 degree temp to get on the plane. Then we had to deal with attendants trying to get everyone to check carry on. Guess what? Before they started charging for carry on this was a non issue. Here's an idea free bag check for any bag 30lbs or less. Plane is a little late taking off, no big deal it happens. Wrong, we've been sitting on the Tarmac for 1:45. That's one hour and 45 minutes. Last time I use United. A round of water would be kinda nice. To finish on a good note they're letting us use the bathroom. Update: it's been two hours and we haven't moved. Update: United, feel free to contact me to make this right. I doubt it'll happen. Update: Sat on Tarmac for 2:45. The crew has exceeded their time. Returning to the gate for crew rest. Update: So...start to finish, leaving work for airport and back home. About 9 hours of travel. The good news is they'll ship my bag to my doorstep, when they find it. The employee that checked my bag in didn't scan it. They just have to wait for it to turn up. read more

How ghetto can you get? On a loooong flight overseas in a cramped seat, half the plane was empty. I requested to move up from row 35 to an empty bulkhead or exit row. I was told that there were plenty available if I'm willing to pay an extra $149. My flight cost a few thousand dollars and I refused to be nickle and dimed. Nowadays there really is no reason to fly with legacy airlines like United. Once associated with premiere service, United now often treats you worse than their smaller competitors like Jet Blue. I've done my share of travel within the U.S. and abroad. United employees seem entitled, perhaps because they have seen better times. You still see many older flight attendants who are tenured sporting lousy dispositions. You wonder how much they are being paid and whether they would be able to find as well a paid job if they ever left. During my last flight, a stewardess spilled water on me. She never apologized or even offered a napkin. Sure, it may seem small, but noticing countless other insensitivies over the years like this just compound the fact that legacy airlines should have died a long time ago. It's not like I expect great service from airlines anymore either. Maybe the newer, startup airlines remember the fact that basic courtesy should not be forgotten, because they have to compete with dinosaurs like United. read more

The situation: My connecting flight from Dulles to LAX was downsized by 50 seats. The airline found about this situation in the morning and when I arrived via my first flight I was told that they would try to get me on but if not, I'd have to take another flight. That's not really that big a deal, they did give me a free night in a hotel, $400 in travel vouchers and a flight the next day. However... If they knew about this ahead of time, why didn't they have a plan for all the people who got booted from the flight? Why did we have to walk halfway across the terminal to a packed customer service counter and wait over THREE HOURS for an issue they knew was coming? Why were the customer service reps rude? Finally I gave up and found another counter about 20 minutes away, waited another half an hour and they took care of me. That was nice of them. But when you know that 50 of your customers are going to get bumped, you should have a plan... Seriously. I hate the major carriers in the US, seriously. read more

Delayed at Dulles with United. Flight attendant is sick. It happens. However, while they look for a replacement...the staff (One Person) has left her post at the gate. And they just keep bumping back the estimated time of departure in 15 minute increments. =\ At least the wifi is free. Update: Finally boarded after about 90 mins for the replacement flight attendant. However, had to deplane shortly after due to mechanical issues. Came back to waiting area without anyone to greet and give instructions. Looks like ONE United employee was working all four gates in our immediate area. Flight crew came out and was immediately surrounded by customers. They also did not know what the next step once. The gate display finally showed the gate change. We informed the crew, since they still haven't been notified and there were no announcements made over the PA. Hiked over to new gate. Let's see how this one turns out. Had not flown united for a long time. Had to for work because of contract. I normally fly American and have had good luck. The automated check in process is overly complicated and they are always trying to make the up sell. On my return flight my bag didn't make it. The guy at DFW responsible for bags really didn't care and just told me to use the automated system. Which I did. I was lucky to board the new updated Worldwide-2 version of the United's Boeing 777. what is deceptive, is that when you are booking the seat. the seat depicted on the united plus website DOESNT match the seat when you go to sit down!!! I booked a Aisle, 9H, on the Starboard side row because there was only one other person seated next to me. What I got was the newly configured middle row. next to the one I wanted. The worst international flight I've ever flown I flew 9hrs from Zurich to Dullies. There obviously was not enough meals for passengers on the plane. After waiting 3hrs for service, I dosed off and was skipped. I called the attendant, just 2 seats pass and was informed there was no more meals. I could have more cheese and crackers. Unbelievable, the amount I paid for this flight, then stuck for 9+hrs. with no food. I had to beg for the can of soda, instead of less than a cup in the plastic cups. When I complained, the passenger next to me,(a prev. employee of United), asked to move. Of course, the white privileged woman was quickly move to 1st class so she didn't have to sit next to my kind. My boss just recently had a horrible experience flying First-Class on United. I gave the airline 2 stars because I thought the customer service was very pleasant throughout the process of booking the flight. I also had to change my boss' flight reservation so he could come home early and they were very accommodating and it was only $75 extra. He was very disappointed that the amenities in First-Class (and the overall airline) were misrepresented. 1. Entertainment: in order to receive entertainment, they expect you to download the United app on your personal phone or tablet (no screens or monitors are on the flight) and PAY for wifi and entertainment. Once downloaded, you are required to allow the United app access to all of your personal and private data- your location, contacts, email, etc... On top of this....the wifi failed and did not work at all. 2. Meal: the airline offered a meal during the flight, however did not offer any options. My boss received a shrivelled burger with wilted lettuce- when asked if there was anything else the flight attendant said that was all they had. 3. There were 2 types of wine on the flight, but apparently they were cheap and disgusting. 4. One female flight attendant was over-heard by passengers saying: "If anyone else complains on this flight I am going to LOSE IT." Which was extremely unprofessional and also very unsettling. read more

The customer service isn't what it used to be, and when we flew from Barcelona to Washington DC, we were not informed that if we checked more than one bag, the charge would be $100 per bag. We arrived in DC (layover to Chicago) and one of our bags was completely damaged. A hard case suitcase that had one end completely smashed in. We were told to go to the Customer Service desk to fill out a form & the lady at the desk told us to "call the main office in Houston or fill out the report in Chicago". I was stuck in Dulles Airport unnecessarily for over 8 hours and flew out 24 hours after my original flight time. The situation: The plane needed a replacement part (of course they realized this after everyone had boarded) which could only be retrieved from Chicago. They brought the piece back after someone went to get it on a flight going to Chicago...but brought back the wrong one. Customer service was AWOL even after demands from people on the flight. They purposefully evaded us and sent us on wild goose chases to find the customer service managers. ANYWAY. They gave me a $100 flight coupon...but obviously not enough and DEFINITELY not worth the experience. They basically can't handle any delays or any sort of rescheduling. It's fine if nothing goes wrong, but if it doesn't, chances are you're in for a crappy experience...and thats the chance you take with this airline. If you can, AVOID UNITED AIRLINES! read more

So as my flight from boston arrived (finally) my layover was here in dulles. The attendant at the counter was very helpful. I had 10mins to get on my connecting flight back to CA. She made sure I went to the right gate and got me a paper ticket. The terminal for united is crazy. Of course, I had 10 mins to rush to the other side of the bldg. to catch my flight back to CA! The aircraft that was going back to CA, was the updated version. I had the more room seat, and I loved the idea they adapted from virgin America, outlets for ur electronics in the middle of the seats with direct tv! Though some of the flight attendants were pretty mean, I guess they were just tired. But the whole day spent @ an airport and layovers, I get pretty cranky also. I think i'm going 2 stick to my jetblue and virgin America airlines. I really do hate to pay $25 for my luggage, that's BS! read more

I mainly fly United internationally for bidness so my review is from a non-domestic optic. The good: I like the Star Alliance and United codeshare program which bumps up my Premier Miles and lets me fly truly outstanding airlines like Qatar Airways. United's international/foreign crews are usually younger and hotter. I used to "date" one from the Frankfurt crew who was wunderbar. United e-specials offers some pretty decent online fares. I scored a great trip to St. Maarten that way. The bad. United's planes are older and it shows. The movie screens in business class are small and awful. You are at the mercy of what movie they screen and when they screen it. Miss the start of the movie or want to pause it to hit the head? SOL. The variety of entertainment options is extremely limited compared to other airlines. The seats in business suck. The food is so-so and the beer variety is lacking. read more

I've never met so many people who have been less customer centric. United used to be an awesome airline. In my opinion it has strayed from that. The attendants didn't offer any help to several customers who just wanted gate information for a connecting flight here at Dulles. They told the passengers that the pilot just flys the plane and they help out while in flight. When disembarking on the Tarmac my wife and I asked which direction to go to get to the terminal and the attendant rolled his eyes at us. Again, this after a flight that was delayed where United didn't post any changes on flight information. I highly recommend Virgin Atlantic. I checked in over 4.5 hours early for my flight from Munich to DC. Somehow that wasn't enough time for United to get my bag on the flight. Flight out of Munich is delayed for mechanical reasons. When we land in DC I rush to get to my connecting gate and arrived 11 minutes before departure. I'm running up to the gate as my seat was being given to a standby customer. I didn't realize that was what was happening until they closed the gate door right in front of me. "This flight is closed." What?!? I begged and pleaded with nary a response. No apologies. No remorse. My name wasn't called on the loudspeaker (though I couldn't have gotten there any faster if they did). They don't care that I now have to wait an additional 5 hours to get home at the end of an already very long day. read more

I recently flew back on United from Dulles. When I went to the electronic kiosk, it showed different (later) flight than what my confirmation showed. I asked for an agent and she directed to her manager named 'Narcisse H'. This turned out to be the most rude and confrontational conversation I've had in a very long time. He said he could not see my original flight and that this was the fault of United Mileage. I said, isn't United Mileage still part of Unite? He then said it wasn't his problem and told me to call United Mileage. In my disbelief, I tried to explain to him that this is still united from a customer perspective. He became belligerent and confrontational and said that it wasn't his problem and asked why I wouldn't call the United Mileage desk. I found Narcisse's attitude totally inappropriate and unprofessional. His way of telling me to get lost was unacceptable. I did get this issue resolved by asking for his supervisor who then found the reason immediately and provided an acceptable answer (connecting flight no longer exist). I also found the response of the gate agent cold as if I was bothering her when I asked a simple question. But, Narcisse's response should not be tolerated. For what ever reason, the folks at this airport generally had poor manner. When I went to check out my rental car, the gate person looked at me as I was interrupting something important (like her cigarette break at midnight). There were others that lacked courtesy. I just put it as city life getting to them. But, that is their job and they should manage their customer relation. read more

We were so pleasantly surprised by everything about our flight from Munich to Washington, Dulles UA 133. We were dreading the 9 1/2 hour flight in economy and then found ourselves shocked with delight! Boarding was very simple and efficient and we left on time. The seating configuration of 2-3-2 was a great improvement on the usual 3-3-3. We were able to have 2 seats on the left without some stranger sitting next to us. The leg room was surprisingly ample and didn't look to be much different that the expensive Economy Plus rows in front of us. The service was great: Drinks , snacks, a delicious hot meal, then a hot snack before landing. The staff came around frequently with drinks and kept the temperature at a reasonable coolness unlike so many other flights these days. We really dislike United domestic flights but now we'll be sure to consider United for future international flights since we had such a good experience. read more

This is the worst experience I have had. Got 3 first class tickets for the family . 2 of the four connecting flights delayed by multiple hours. All you get is a text message with the next time of the flight right when the actual time is due . Got stuck in IAD because first the plane wasn't there !!!! I've been pretty critical of United in the past but after the most recent couple of flights I took with them I'm hoping that they are improving. Their new CEO has acknowledged that they have issues from my experience it appears that they are at least starting to work on them. The last time we flew with UAL we arrived late at Dulles because of awful DC area traffic and a very slow shuttle from long term parking. By the time we got to the baggage check-in counter the one hour deadline for checking luggage had passed, but their staff were helpful and accommodating and got our bags on the plane. On the flight itself I discovered that UAL now gives you free beer and wine on long haul flights, as well as ice cream after dinner. The 767 we were on was old and worn out on the inside, but it did have one of their new systems for streaming movies and TV over WiFi. I appreciated that feature and just wish they had power ports so I could watch an entire movie without using up my phone's battery. I've had too many negative experiences with UAL to give them more than two stars at this point but I'm hoping that this trend of improved service continues. read more

When boarding they asked for people who needed additional help on boarding...we had a stroller. We walk up to the entrance and then the lady tells us in a very rude manner...they don't cater to children. Wow. Didn't realize my child needed to be "catered" to? We have a big stroller and they stated if people needed additional help with boarding to come board now. Smdh. United I have already decided to not travel with you next time! I hate flying. Always have and always will. Mainly because I have ear issues. Due to the nature of my work, on occasion, I have to fly. I received a deal on Travelocity to fly from Jacksonville to Washington-Dulles on 4/16/19 the 7:40pm flight. I wanted to give United a good review, because of the flight attendants on this flight. They were both warm and engaging. It made the flight more comfortable. On decent, my ears were really bothering me and one of the flight attendants named Jessica engaged me with conversation and took my mind off my ears. I appreciated that.
