After telling my wife for months that we need to go so she could experience their fantastic weekday breakfast special, and with the overkill of recent "snow days" she's been off for, we finally had the chance. I had only been once before for breakfast, and it still lives up to the hype. Housed in the old Carter Brothers BBQ spot, they've cleaned it up, made it look clean, and fresh, and are cooking up some delicious breakfasts. We were warmly welcomed in by the staff, seated quickly and treated to mini cranberry muffins and small cups of fresh squeezed OJ. I once again ordered the breakfast special, with scrambled eggs, French toast and sausage. Power out? Omelette in. Our power went out, so we tried University Diner. Walked in, got seated instantly, and were greeted with orange cranberry muffins and fresh-squeezed OJ--worth the trip just for that. Menus looked like they'd survived a zombie apocalypse, but the western omelette was perfection--fluffy, loaded, and the best I've had in NC. Hashbrowns? Meh. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. The waitress was friendly enough and it didn't take too long for the food to arrive. These are the reasons it's getting a 2. The interior ambiance was cold as in non inviting. Had about the same vibe as a school cafeteria except the food wasn't as good. I had the roasted chicken and there were two sauce alternatives I choose the BBQ. Not sure what in the heck they put on that chicken but in no way was it BBQ. Had a nasty flavor. I heard wonderful things about breakfast but we arrived just past noon on the weekend and ordered from the lunch and dinner menu. Service was quite slow. We waited for over 10 minutes before we were greeted by our server and equally long before drinks arrived. I ordered the Chicken Cobb Salad which arrived well after everyone else at the table received their food and incomplete. The salad was one of the priciest on the menu, presumably because of the numerous ingredients. The salad arrived with cheddar cheese (should've been bleu cheese crumbles), one piece of egg and one piece of tomato. I was missing the bacon, red onions, Kalamata olives, and avocado. Again, it took awhile and numerous flags to receive attention. She eventually brought a small bowl of bacon, grilled onions and olives. After I pointed out I was still missing the avocado, I received avocado paste. Ultimately, by the time I ate, the salad was fine as the chicken was cooked well, salad greens were fresh and dressing was tasty. We've been here twice and I have yet to be dazzled. Getting sat takes longer than it should - apparently the young lady behind the register is not allowed to seat you so she'll tell you someone will be right with you - so will 3-4 more people - then she'll take your name and you'll sit down only to stand up 10 seconds later to be sat. Service was better this round - a server came almost instantly instead of us having to wait 10 minutes. Last time we came for breakfast but it was past time and they were only serving lunch - which turned out to be fine because the lunch was amazing. This visit we got breakfast. They give out little cranberry orange muffins and fresh squeezed orange juice which is a nice touch, but it masks the unimpressive breakfast. I got steak and eggs - eggs were cooked as requested, but the steak wasn't. They also did not clean the flattop before cooking the steak so it was seasoned with flattop grime - not a good look. Nothing impressive about the toast, hashbrowns or pancakes - they taste the same as anywhere else you'll go. I do like that the bathrooms are in the foyer of one of the lobbies. It keeps things a bit separated. I'll be happy to go back for lunch or dinner, but probably won't be back for breakfast. read more

I had an opportunity to try out university diner with a friend on my birthday for a nice breakfast. Upon arrival, parking was easy in their large lot. I Walked in and was immediately greeted and seated by a friendly hostess. We were sat at a comfortable booth. The entire restaurant appears recently renovated and floors tables and seats were clean. We tried out the breakfast special Which was $7.99 and included two pancakes or French toast two eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, or bacon and a drink, coffee I thought it was such a great deal. I was also surprised that it also included a small cup of juice and some freshly baked mini biscuits that were on the house. I was satisfied with the portion. It was kind of big but I would call it the perfect amount if you're looking to have a full breakfast. I ordered my eggs scrambled and they were cooked nice and fluffy with a good consistency. The hashbrowns were really good, crispy but not soggy. I went with the sausage links that were nicely grilled and juicy. The French toast was impressive, nicely toasted, not soggy and very flavorful. The food was excellent. We went on a Tuesday evening and the special was chicken pot pie. It was the best pot pie ever that I had in a restaurant. The crust was flaky. It came out hot! We had excellent service. The waitress was right on the ball for a group of 12 ladies. I had it with a side of pickled beets and they were delicious too. Yes, the waitress came often to ask us if we were all set or if we needed anything. The atmosphere was mellow and it wasn't too crowded. The staff here were ALL very kind and helpful. I had the spinach omelette and added mushroom, along with the grits and rye toast, which was seated unfortunately. I was used to another restaurant who has seedless rye. I had no complaints. The grits had a good consistency and were nice and creamy and I love the way that my arm was cooked. I had to wait on the complementary muffins so the lady gave me to go box. I also enjoyed the complementary refresh, squeezed orange juice, and only noticed the juice machine (pictured) on my way out. I had a great experience at this local establishment the other day. I liked that they had tons of options; you could bring anyone here and they would be able to find something to eat. The only disappointment was that they don't serve breakfast all day, which meant I couldn't get some pancakes. However, the roasted chicken was delicious and juicy. My friend got the fried shrimp, and it was good. I had one, and they were fried well and not overdone. I liked the options as well, they had many sides to choose from to accompany the protein on offer. The parking was easy to access, and there was plenty of it. They were pretty dead when we arrived, so finding seating and parking was a breeze. I thought this was a cheap and good meal, I will be back here, and for breakfast next time! read more

Also, I would like to be able to call in an order for pick up but the menu is not on their website. The service was amazing even though it was early in the day my server was attentive and helpful without being all on top of me. The country fried steak was amazing the gravy was even better, and probably the best squash casserole I have ever had in a restaurant, the cornbread was not dry and not overly sweet and was at least and inch and a half plus thick, the sweet tea was the epitome of southern ice tea. The only downside was the mashed potatoes, this is the second time I have had them and not sure out they make them but they tasted not quite right, not spoiled or anything but not how you would expect them to taste, don't base your opinion on my preference but as for me when I eat there again and it will be soon I will definitely try a different side read more

Drove out to High Point to have lunch with a friend at a restaurant that ended up not being open for lunch that day. So we went to the University Kitchen. It was at lunch time but we were seated immediately. The server was prompt at getting to us and took our orders. She then returned with our drinks. It took a while for our meals to come out. I ordered a fried Chicken Salad and it was good. The dining room started to get more customers and the noise level was high. Refills were slow in coming. Overall, it was an ok experience but I probably won't be out that way in a while. read more

We came in this morning for breakfast and they seated us and promptly left us for dead! There were waitresses swarming all around us for 10 to 15 minutes and not one person acknowledged us or said I'll be right with you or anything. We got up to walk out and walked by the register and other waitresses and not one person said a word to us! I guess they figured out something happened when they found the menus still sitting on the table. I definitely don't recommend going to this place at all. First time here--we stopped on a rainy Saturday for brunch. As we entered the renovated space we were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess who took us to a booth and said "we'll bring y'all some muffins and orange juice while you look at the menu." We had seen a big orange juice machine at the door and were excited as the prospect of complimentary fresh juice. We waited quite a while before the wait person came over--like 10 minutes. No muffins and OJ. We ordered and our drinks came out quickly. We asked about the muffins and OJ, and she said oh yes they're complimentary if you order breakfast. So we said we would like some and she said "I'll bring them right out." They never came, but we saw other tables being served. (When she brought the check we asked again and she apologized and offered to pack them to go, but we said no, we'll take them now. Delicious!) As to the food - The coffee is pretty good! The food came out quickly as well, and everything was good. The spinach omelette was heavy on the cheese and I'll remember next time to specify light cheese. In all, a pretty good place for breakfast. I'll do another review if we come back for lunch. read more

We went to breakfast on a Saturday around 12:30pm at University Diner. The portion size was large however everything else kind of felt lacking. The ambience was OK, but didn't really have that diner feel. The service before ordering was attentive, but after ordering there was never a drink refill and the next time we saw our server was when they asked about the check. The omelettes were fluffy, but not overly flavorful and the hashbrowns were OK. I might go during the week earlier to see if they actually have the complementary orange juice and muffins, but I was very underwhelmed by my visit. read more

Service is good! But, the food not so much. The flounder sandwich was awful. The flounder was overcooked to the point I had to break it apart and and the middle. It was mushy the slaw was runny. Person with me had the baked spaghetti. It was a disappointment as well. We don't know what to suggest you might enjoy. It's hard to pay a large amount for uneaten food. I was excited to try University Diner when it opened a few months ago (closer to my home), as its sister restaurant (University Kitchen) is one of my favorites. At first, I was not disappointed. The interior is nice and clean and updated, and the staff are always friendly and attentive. The food was as good as the Kitchen in the beginning. However, some changes in the food are evident that I don't care for. The Diner's marinara and barbecue sauces are not the same recipe anymore as the Kitchen's homemade sauces....which are so yummy. The mac & cheese is not always made fresh....today it was evidently reheated from the day before, dry and lukewarm. The garlic sticks are puny, compared with those that the Kitchen serves. The steamed broccoli is nowhere near as good as the Kitchen's. And there are other items that are not on par with the Kitchen, as well. My husband and I will happily travel an extra 10 minutes to eat at University Kitchen, whose food is always fresh and hot and consistent. University Diner needs to improve, or we will not be back. I have eaten at the Diner at least 15-20 times, and it has become disappointing. read more

Giant portions, tasty food, dirty silverware, nasty dirty menus, good service . Two things to do before I come back. Wipe down your silverware after washing and before you hide it in the napkin. Buy and print new menus, the current ones are disgusting, and marked all over and food stained. Lastly, why breakfast only until eleven am on Sunday? The wife and I have been looking for a new go to place for dinner. I suggested this place because it is not too far. You cannot order on the website and there is not even a menu on the website. You MUST go through Door dash. So I go through downloading the app and setting it up and finally get to see a menu. My wife wants a club sandwich and I went with the jumbo shrimp. I enter everything on the app and place the order. Two minutes later, my phone rings. It's a lady named Tessa informing me that they are out of jumbo shrimp, so I have to pick something else. But there's no menu. I have to log back onto Door dash and find the menu again so I have to call Tessa back. I decided on the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and green beans and called Tessa back. Two minutes later, my phone rings. It's Tessa again. They are out of white bread for the club sandwich and want to know if they can substitute whole wheat. The wife was cool with it, so that's what we did. I drive over to pick it up. Carter Bros had a drive thru, so I'm thinking I can just pick it up at the window. No dice, the drive thru is closed. I have to walk inside. The food was ready. I asked for a paper menu, since the only place the menu exists outside the restaurant is on Door dash. They don't have paper menus, but told me I could take pictures of the plastic one. Really? Enough is enough and I really am not impressed one bit. I got food home. My wife's sandwich was fine, but my order was a bit dry. Who serves mashed potatoes without gravy? Food quality poor at best. Chef has a hard time cooking items my table received at our table without burning it. The flounder special was terrible and black in appearance. The fish sent back and the same black fish piece returned by another server. SAME PIECE of black gooey inside the batter. Tried to get no salt on fries came with salt on them. Tried to send back to be remade but the chief again expressed no desire in remaking because he stated did not add salt. I could see, feel and taste the salt. On low sodium heart diet. He and management did not care. 3 out of the 4 dinners had to request item that failed to make it the table. I would not recommend this restraint to a Dog to eat in. read more

We were disappointed in our meal this week. My husband and I took our 2 grandchildren thinking it would be as good as University Kitchen on Main Street. The vegetable plate was not hot. (pintos, mashed potatoes, green beans). We were not supposed to have been charged for the drinks on the kid's menu but were. The garlic bread sticks looked like they weren't handmade like the tasty ones at University Kitchen. My husband said the sweet potato casserole and macaroni were not as good.
