We've been loyal customers of University started several decades ago. Our recent visit a few weeks ago was looking to replace our dishwasher purchased 20 years ago. Our sales person Newton approached us before we even finished writing the name down. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional; compared the various models, didn't try to upsell but sincerely working on meeting our needs. Our new dishwasher arrived a few days later. The contracted installer worked with us for a convenient time, showed up right on time and fished the job perfectly within 20 minutes. We are happy with the new dishwasher and impressed with the excellent service for both the sale and installation. read more

I can't say enough about University Electric Adam was the sales person who spent some time with us. He showed us a few good options for appliances when we had a major kitchen renovation. He sold us our Thermidor package which saved us money and Adam held onto the appliance for nearly 6 mos. while the contractor finished my kitchen (so we didn't waste time on the warranty of the appliances.) If a Zero rating were possible, that's what I would give university Electric. We went to University Electric in late March (20th, I believe) when our dishwasher died. We didn't shop around as we had purchased other appliances there and were treated well. Those were events not to be repeated. We received not 1 but 2, non-functional dishwashers. The first didn't get dishes clean, the second didn't work at all. After the first one (which was installed two weeks after we bought it), they wanted to repair the broken dishwasher under our warranty. I said no, we purchased a new assumedly functional dishwasher and that is what we want. They argued that this was not their policy and it would have to be approved by the manufacturer, GE. That took about 2 weeks. So now we have been washing dishes by hand for a month. Once they agreed to replace it with a new dishwasher, it took another 2 weeks to get the dishwasher delivered and installed, it worked for about 2 weeks and quit. It didn't even turn on.. After the second one, they again wanted to have the unit repaired under the warranty and made an appointment to have a repairman visit. In all fairness, they told us that they would not replace another dishwasher. Read that again, If they supply another broken dishwasher, they will not replace it. Maybe that should be their advertising jingle! I couldn't believe they really meant it. Again my faith in human nature was misplaced. When we refused the offer of repairing the second broken unit, they said they had delivered on their obligation and we would have to take it up with the manufacturer if we wanted anything else. It took us another 6 weeks to work with the GE and we got a new functional dishwasher last Friday, July 24. 4 months from the original date of purchase I am still amazed that this is considered an acceptable method of business by any American Company. So be warned. Buying a new appliance from University Electric does not mean you will receive and new, working appliance from University Electric. Needed a dishwasher asap and we bought our last one almost 20 years ago from here. Estevan was helpful in getting me the correct unit and explaining delivery etc. The install guys, Enrique and Robert were true professionals, fast and detail oriented. They had the old washer out and new one installed, leveled and running beautifully. Their care in leveling and running the electrical and drain were not slap-dash and I could tell they take pride in their work. Glad we went though this business again read more

We have purchased our washer and dryer, our Miele ovens and now a $16,000 sub zero refrigerator from University due to in their past great information and recommendations. We did this knowing that we could have purchased all for less at other appliances stores but purchased through them because of their past information, reputation, and recommendations. I finding that is no longer true. I spoke to Mike, Customer Service, to ask for other recommendations, since our long time helpful, sales person just retired. We have just had a new SubZero 48 in wide refrigerator/freezer combo installed without front panels and without door handles to open and close it. (With a great installer recommended by University!!!) We need the Sub Zero front panels made. University or our sales persons airst recommendation strung us along for four months and then we were told he couldn't make them since he sold his business. Would have been helpful if he told us in January or any of the 5 or 6 times that we called him. We spoke to another sales person who said that she handled our previous sales person's accounts and recommended a contractor/cabinet makers. She did warn us that he was high but did excellent work. We were knocked over by his bid almost 50% of the cost of the Subzero. I just spoke to Mike, the Customer Service Manager who just told me that the store does not have a list of recommended installers and contractors but possibly individual sales persons did-he said that he had no recommendations or list of recommended cabinet makers to give us. Maybe we should have done with a few or our friends did and go to other appliances stores who are not only less expensive but do give installer recommendations. read more

I appreciate the manager responding to my review. But I wanted to clarify that regarding Appliance Hub, yes I did buy an "open box" range that is new. It was sold "as is" but I still have a warranty with Viking. Directly. The extended one is with a third party that's authorized to work on Vikings. And also wanted to add that I was originally looking at Thermador and Wolf ranges when I was at university appliance. (I didn't think I could afford a Viking.) I walked into the establishment and received a cold look as to what are you doing here! None of the employees offered to help me. I was looking for a German made stove for my church since we were experiencing trouble keeping the pilot lit. I stood in front of an employees desk for about 10 minutes with no help from him. I asked to speak to the supervisor but instead this other gentleman spoke up and said he was the owner of establishment. I found him to be rude, racist and a bully to his employees. I went to University Electric on Martin Ave, San Jose with my wife to buy a dishwasher. I was going to leave and then we met with their salesperson Adam Heintz who was able to explain how the Miele 7196 worked. When we tried it by ourselves we didn't understand it fully but after Adam explained it and that it was a simple interface we were confident enough to buy it. Without his help we wouldn't have bought it and now that we have it we are very happy as it is an amazing machine. They have the best stuff in that store but also the best sales professionals. read more

My husband and I purchased four new appliances for our kitchen at University Electric in early February, which were delivered on March 11. While I found our sales person, Gregg, knowledgeable and helpful while we were in the store, he was pretty much MIA after that. I had to initiate each and every call/email myself to get updates on our appliances, including the last call to confirm that they had all been delivered to the store! I was also told that an installer would contact me to set up an installation date and time. I never received that call. Having had my confidence in UE shaken at this point, I decided to source my own installer and found a local company that was able to install them the same day they were delivered. After once again emailing UE myself to inform them of this, I was told that the scheduled installation for the following Wednesday would be cancelled. What installation?? Since I never received a call this would have been quite the surprise to find them on my doorstep with no work to do! After installation, I found that one of the fruit/vegetable drawers had a crack in it so I notified UE of this and was given a number to call myself to obtain a replacement. UE doesn't do that, apparently. After having to make three different calls to GE, I finally got routed to the correct number for part replacements.  I can only assume that I received a level of customer service commensurate with the amount of money we spent at UE, which was, apparently, not the sum they must be accustomed to seeing considering they also do kitchen remodels. Coupled with the fact that UE never initiated any call or email to provide me with any update on my order, and made me call myself (three different numbers) to source a replacement drawer for the refrigerator, has confirmed my decision to never do business with University Electric again.   I am disappointed because I generally try to shop locally. read more

I've worked with Kao twice and both experiences have been great. We first met Kao in store when purchasing an induction range. He was knowledgeable with their products and was helpful with the purchase and delivery of our new range, and removal of our old gas stove. We were in the market recently for a new dishwasher, so I called Kao and he gave me a great price on the specific model we were interested in. The price he quoted was less than another store, and the dishwasher arrived earlier than stated. I would definitely work with University Electric and Kao for future appliance purchases. read more

The sales people are knowledgeable. Thats the good news. However, when it comes to pricing, they should put out a statement at the very first meeting that "whether you buy an appliance for $1000 or $100,000, we will never give you a discount". They SAY they match the price, but they don't. They SAY they provide contractor discount but then also say, their price IS the contractors' price. This is obviously NOT true because they quote List prices that can be verified by multiple sources. Would have given them more stars if they were honest about their practices. read more

Do not trust University Electric. Their policies are not in your best interest and good customer service is not something they strive for - at least for some customers like me. The Short Version: I would not recommend buying from University, and if you do, hope that nothing goes wrong. While the showroom is enticing and full of gorgeous high-end appliances, the rest of my experience was shockingly awful. They shift problems to the customer, offering zero accountability - no exchanges, refunds, or help even when products are defective out of the box. Their policies are meant to protect only themselves (yay capitalism!) -- and yet, these policies are not unilaterally applied. I can only speculate as to who gets good service at this self-described "luxury" retailer and which class does not. I prefer to shop small, local business but you must absolutely avoid this retailer. The Long Version: I purchased a $1000 Zephyr range hood from them in April that was defective out of the box, which we did not know until it was installed. Because it was installed (by their installer), University Electric would not allow an exchange of the unit and directed me to the manufacturer's warranty. Their installer told me their management sometimes took care of problems "for some clients" with immediate exchanges. I was not one of those. After five appointments and counting, and three months later I still had no working appliance and out $1000. The associate I worked with didn't seem to be in any rush to respond to emails. Her responses to my concern that the unit could start a fire was to "unplug it from the socket." It's hardwired which any salesperson should know. Their resolution was to turn off the circuit breaker to the unit. In her email she exclaimed, "Bravo!" since the problem was solved to her satisfaction... and liability. She wasn't apologetic about my issue or the inconvenience, and demonstrated zero empathy or awareness. Let me remind you again, this is a "luxury" high-end appliance retailer. I spoke to one of the managers, Michael, who seemed genuinely sorry for the issue and informed me their policies prohibited him from helping me further. Policies are a choice and they could have easily replaced the unit and sent the defective one back as they've done in other cases. Instead they chose to not to help me, and I can only speculate as to the reason. UPDATE: I started working with the Zephyr rep directly and he was infinitely more helpful, responsive, and genuinely interested in resolving my issue with urgency, clarity and transparency. There was apologies from him on my experience with dealer. Incidentally, just down the street is Home Depot where I discovered that most of the same items are available (through special order), often cheaper and with better purchase assurance. read more

We did all our research via Consumer Reports and narrowed our choice down. After a very satisfying conversation with the salesman, Andy, we arrived at our choice. We very much appreciated Andy's input. He is very knowledgeable and practical. I recommend you work with him. We placed the order over the phone and two masked men delivered it and installed it a couple days later. The removed the old machine and left the kitchen sparkling. Trying to get these folks to sell me a dishwasher; poor experience with multiple sales reps. TLDR: Repeatedly treated somewhat rudely on the phone; sales reps audibly became disinterested as soon as they realized I'm 'just' looking for a $2k dishwasher. Two different reps going with the 'we'll call you back' routine and never actually calling. The setup: our 10-year-old dishwasher is starting to fail. Our last few appliances, two built-in refrigerators, came from University Electric, so they were our first choice. Our rep at the time, Walter, came recommended by our general contractor, and got us sorted quickly back in 2021 when lead times tended to be high. Since Walter isn't with University Electric anymore (his email bounced), I figured I'd call. I called three times. First time was a Monday; realized they're not open on Mondays. Fair enough. Unfortunately, that's where things went downhill. I called again the next day. The person who picked up asked me what I needed, expressed some confusion about whether I was trying to rent vs. buy a dishwasher, but eventually patched me through to a sales rep. The sales rep had a poor connection, so he took down my number and told me he'd call me back. The call back didn't happen for about 4 hours -- odd, since the rep made it sound like he was just going to hop back to a desk phone to fix the connection issue. I called again later in the day and got routed, again with a bit of weirdness, to a different sales rep. We made it a littler farther along, but not by much. I mentioned the specific make + model and he was able to confirm it has the features we need. So far so good. I then asked about the next model up and whether it was worth the higher price. At this point, it seemed like we hit a time limit somehow. The rep abruptly said he'd need to look that up and he'd give me a call back. That call back never came, much like the last one. In total, University Electric managed to lose us as customers in about 6 minutes worth of phone call. It would have taken one sales rep about 4 more minutes to take my money and get the appliance ordered. As a final note, I've noticed University Electric staff tend to respond to these reviews in kind of an unprofessional way, with somewhat colorful descriptions for 'their side' of the customer interaction. So, anticipating that, let me make a few things extra clear: * I was not rude to anyone on the phone. * I did not give anyone the wrong callback number. University Electric also has my email on file, since I previously purchased from them. They had plenty of time and opportunity to reach out if they'd cared to. * I did not say anything that was remotely confusing, or at least should not have been to anyone working the phone in this industry. * I came reasonably well-prepared and had a good idea of the specific product I wanted. read more

I placed an order for a 36 wolf range, wolf hood, sub zero French door fridge, wolf speed oven, dishwasher costing thousands of dollars. They delivered it and refused to bring it into the house. Apparently it is their policy to leave it in the garage. Be warned, they will charge you per appliance to bring it into the house and their delivery does not include installation. Unbelievable. I have never had such a poor experience buying appliances as expensive as these are. Newton, could have been upfront about it during the sales process instead of slipping an important detail when we took delivery. Do not trust the salespeople. We were told to use Stalie Construction to install our refrigerator via Gregg, the salesman. This company wanted almost $1700 to install a built in refrigerator. We then requested another name for an installer. The 2nd one we used to haul away the old fridge and install the new one was $750 and did an excellent job. 35 years ago I built a house and purchased all of the appliances from University. The salesperson and customer service was excellent. In June, 2019, Andy Mustafa helped me to purchase replacement Asko washer and dryer. Pricing, delivery, and installation was reasonable and excellent, also. Tuesday, 09/24/24 at noon, I visited the showroom to inquire about replacing my Asko T208VW dryer. There were no customers in the store at this time, and about 8 salespersons behind their desk working. I showed him the University Electric sales receipt from 2019 and asked him for a quote for a new dryer. Didn't get his name, but this salesperson was rude, harsh, and impolite! It was as if he was annoyed I was bothering him!! He literally shouted out prices to me, and did not bother providing me with a written quote. He verbally said the total price is $1,452.35 and wrote it on my 2019 receipt! I asked him what this included? He shouted out $1,159 + $159 delivery, +$40 install, +$25 haul + TAXES!! Wow, after all the years in dealing with University Electric, I did not feel warranted to be treated as an annoyance. In addition, 3 months ago, I recommended University to a neighbor in need to purchase a replacement refrigerator to fit into a defined tight dimensional space. She said they never returned her call, and purchased the refrigerator from another vendor! Sadly, University Electric must have changed over the years, and customer service is not the same. I am now seeking another vendor. The price may be reasonable, but to be shouted at and feel like I should have never visited the showroom that day, I will not purchase and recommend University Electric to anyone in the future. read more

Excellent experience buying appliances for our kitchen remodel. We worked with Kao, who made the process super easy. He was extremely professional, courteous, and organized throughout our purchase decisions. He would often email back within the hour with the answers to any questions we had. He has great attention to detail, knows the pros and cons of all of the appliances we were interested in, and will find out the answer directly from the vendor if he doesn't know it. He even pointed out three rebates which we were eligible for! Kitchen remodels can be taxing to get through, but Kao made our appliance purchase one less thing to worry about. read more

If you are going to utilize a podium "sign in" system for customers who use service - consider having the sales staff use it. I am so upset. I took my time off work to come to this store because I didn't want to go to a Best Buy or Big hardware store and b/c western appliance had recommended several other local, small owned businesses to shop at. I signed in for help. And a man who came in behind me also signed in for help. Walked around a bit to find the dishwasher I needed. And waited for a rep to call my name. From the other side of the store, a rep walks up to Lester, who signed in after me, and asks "Did you need some help?". Lester should have said, "that lady was in front of me" but doesn't. Sales rep also doesn't check the podium or ask if Lester has signed in, etc. ~~~Why is the podium even there.... sigh. So I decide to check out the store, thinking no problem, there must be another person available pretty quick for sales rep to ignore me and go right to Lester. After a minute, I walk back towards sales rep and Lester and I am now giving Lester the side eye - he knows what he's done. Lester notices, looks away - and continues to say nothing. Sales rep does not notice. Well, I just can't do it. I can't wait for another sales rep. And now I'm getting mad. I just wanted to quickly buy the Bosch dishwasher I needed after doing my own research. I swear I would have been real quick.... I just want to go home now. I go back to said "sign in" podium and cross my name off. Don't need anyone looking for "Jen" and me just leave them high and dry.... Another staff member sees me leave, asks as I'm walking out if I need help - Nope. And then begins to call: Lester! Lester!! Sorry my friend, he is already being helped, and probably doesn't want to answer because he knows what he did. I hope Lester never does that again. And I hope the sales reps here will check the podium, and put their name next to the person they are helping. Dumb podium. I have no idea how to otherwise rate this store. Perhaps they are fantastic at everything else. But I hate their podium. And I have a lot of disdain for sales rep man and Lester. So. Now I've wasted an hour of my life... driving from Los Gatos to Santa Clara on a Friday at 4pm....to get to the store to be ignored and then drive home. Yes, I could have said something to the woman who tried to stop me from leaving. But I was enflamed at that moment. And I didn't want to be upset and raise my voice or have to explain. }}Don't have a podium if you aren't going to use it. Lesson to learn here or a warning per say: You can't count on the podium. If you saw on your cameras that Lester had come in before me - then why would you or your sales rep think Lester and I were a couple or that we were together? Why? Was it due to Lester and I both being of Asian descent? Just say you're sorry your rep didn't use the podium which the large sign on your front door says to do. Since all the reviews seem to be from people getting fancy new kitchens, I wasn't sure what kind of reception I'd get when all I wanted to buy was a countertop microwave. Turns out they treat the "small" customer just as well. I had two main issues: I wanted a specific model that local dealers didn't carry, and I wanted a full-service delivery--haul it up my stairs, unpack it and lift it to the counter, haul away the packaging and most of all, haul away my old microwave. Turns out both were hard to find. University Electric could get me the model I wanted as long as I was willing to wait 3 weeks (I was!) for it to ship from the East Coast. And best of all, they didn't bat an eye at the delivery I wanted. They got on the phone with XVM Appliance Installations, told them what I wanted, and got a ridiculously low price of $75 for the service I wanted. And the price for the microwave was the same as if I'd ordered from the manufacturer. Of course I was worried that they don't have, or at least weren't using, their own in-house delivery people/installers. I worried for the whole 3 weeks that XVM would refuse to do something we'd agreed on. They just came this morning and I worried for nothing, You would have thought they worked for University Electric, they were so friendly and helpful. They didn't just put it the new microwave on the counter as agreed, they plugged it in, set the clock, removed the protective film bits, and had me heat a cup of water to make sure it worked right. The packaging and the old microwave disappeared before I even knew what happened. Overall if you are considering a "small" purchase or a big one, and especially if you value good service, I recommend University Electric without hesitation. I don't like to leave a review without any negative, I'm suspicious of those myself. So I will just mention that the "sign in" directions aren't very clear, I couldn't find a way to do it. Just go on a non-busy weekday like I did, look helpless for a minute near the sign-in sheet like I did, and a nice salesperson will probably come along to help you. read more

I don't recommend University Electric if you're looking for pleasant interactions. There are folks working there that I felt spoke condescendingly to me and had a negative reaction to feedback. The sales rep that I worked with was knowledgable and responsive. Unfortunately, because of the other interactions that I had with other members of the team, I will not be referring anyone to this store. I've also passed along this feedback to my Contractor who have sent University Electric business a ton of business and hope that this will no longer be their first choice in referral. I spent $35k here in total. When it was time for me to purchase my washer and dryer, I went with with another local store and decided that I would rather pay additional fee for shipping than having to deal with any additional interaction with people from this store. There were multiple negative interactions that led me to this review. When I contacted the store to speak to my sales rep and he was not available, I asked the person who picked the call if they could help me. He answered "I don't know, can you wait until your sales person gets back?" and not in a joking way. Another instance that happened at delivery was the real-time delivery cost assessment for moving the items inside the house (vs. in the garage). I never received the communication that different options of delivery aside from curbside was available, and that if I required the items to be delivered anywhere other than the curbside, that a fee would have to be assessed at the time of delivery (and not before). I provided this feedback, to which the person said we did called you and said it will be delivered in the garage. My feedback was about providing customers with information and the available options vs. disputing where it was to be delivered. I didn't want to engage in the finger pointing. Great selection of higher end appliances and kitchen options. Worth the trip to see what's out there

I have been purchasing appliances from University Electric for over 40 years. Lots of appliances. Why - great price, great service. My washer and dryer at one of my apartments recently failed. University was able to get me new Speed Queens in less than a week installed today. Awesome. And their delivery tracking system on their web site is amazing. I didn't have to waste any time "hanging around" for the delivery. I tracked web updates on the delivery time. Then the delivery folks called me. I met them at the destination as they were arriving. They did the installation and hauled away the old stuff in about a half hour. My tenants are really happy. I'm really happy. University Electric is my "go to " appliance center. They are the best. read more
