    lychee en rose
    Sophia W.

I tried the lychee en rose flavor (non-alcoholic), and I loved it! VERY strong lychee flavor, which I appreciated, with rose petal, elderflower, and darjeeling. I absolutely love this concept and would love to come back for their rotating flavors and to try an alcoholic flavor. There is no seating inside but there is space along the wall to stand at. It seems to be more of a grab-and-go spot though. The staff are so kind!! They are fast with the orders, and some of the staff stand outside to greet people.

A soft serve spot by Double Chicken Please, with soft serve inspired by their cocktails. What a concept! I had the Japanese Cold Noodle soft serve, which is more of a sorbet (no dairy) and it was DELICIOUS. I wish I could have tried the other flavors but they don't do samples at this time. I had a hard time picking just from concept alone, but if the other flavors are as good as the one I had, I'm sure they're super good too. I'd love to see them offer a flight of mini servings so you can try multiple flavors.

Garibaldi - orange, orange blossom, and campari ($11)

Coming from the owners of DCP, there will be a lot of fans who naturally make their way here for that alone. I am one of those people! Loves: + Fun soft serve flavors. Dariy vs non-dairy and alc vs non-alc flavors. I tried the Garibaldi (orange, orange blossom, and campari) and I would certainly get it again. Other options my visit were matcha, dodo (yakult-inspired), and dirty martini. + Shop wants to have a rotating menu which is cool, so check their socials for their latest flavors + Cute 80's vibe inside + Amazing level of service for a soft serve joint; even one of the owners GN was outside greeting everyone! The minor drawbacks I see are $11 for soft serve and the lack of seating indoors. However, the concept is unique and it's in an area with a ton of foot traffic. As a huge fan of DCP, truly wishing Unnecessary the best and excited to see how they do in NYC.

Expected more from Unnecessary, considering they're founded by Double Chicken Please. The concept is cool, but the execution fell a bit short. It turned out to just be an underwhelming ice cream spot. The menu is rather short -- 2 alcoholic flavors and 2 non alcoholic flavors. None of them were that crazy, but my group opted for: NOT SO PLAIN VANILLA (Non alcoholic): Probably the best one out of the flavors. The vanilla flavor is pleasant and fragrant, but honestly it would be a problem if you mess up plain ole vanilla. PENICHILLIN (Non alcoholic): I personally enjoyed this one, but my group hated it. Ideal for those who enjoy zingy flavors, like ginger and lemon. This was nothing I would write home about though. DIRTY MARTINI OLIVE (Alcoholic): Hated this one. We ordered two of these and I noticed some inconsistencies -- one was evidently more potent than the other. I don't mind strong alcoholic ice cream, but the flavors did not balance well. Seems like they have a rotating menu, so the flavors are subject to change. Service was great and they worked rather fast with the amount of manpower they had. I just wish the ice cream flavors were as good as the cocktails from DCP.

    Dodo Green, Matcha Grasshopper

4.5/5 Matcha -- super smooth, very good matcha flavor with a fun white choco shell. Though didnt taste too special. 4/5 Dodo Green - more of a sorbet texture (not nearly as smooth as the matcha), very heavy yakult flavor with a hint of jasmine. Wish the elderflower came through. Loved that they had standing room inside and benches outside. Came by on their opening day (6/26), very minimal wait, worth a visit once but at $11 very hefty price tag for soft serve.

This was probably the most unique ice cream I've had. I went with the Waldorf salad and my wife got the martini. I would have to say that neither tasted a lot like their namesake but were good attempts. The Waldorf ice cream had heavy hints of celery while the martini had strong notes of vermouth. We didn't hate either one to be honest. I hope they continue to come up with new wacky flavors to try.

Was in the area so I thought I'd stop by Unnecessary, which is founded by Double Chicken Please. I was so excited to try it since the cocktails at Double Chicken Please are always so delicious and unique! Unnecessary definitely features some unique soft serve flavors (cocktail inspired ice cream). I asked for something refreshing, and the staff recommended the Dodo Green. Unfortunately, they don't allow you to sample flavors, which is pretty disappointing for an ice cream spot. If I had been able to try it first, I definitely wouldn't have chosen it because it was extremely sweet for my palate. It tasted like 80% Yakult and 10% Jasmine (which was incredibly faint), and I didn't catch the elderflower taste at all. At $11 for a soft serve, it's a gamble when you might not even like the flavor. Not sure if I'd go back

I was so happy to finally get to try this spot. I had seen it all over instagram and social media. Get here early to be one of the first in line. I was the first person and a line did form pretty quickly. They open on the later side of the day 3:30pm on weekdays and I think 1pm on weekends. May want to double check that. They have four options to choose from. Some of them include alcohol and some don't. Some also include dairy and some don't. I got the Dirty Martini frozen yogurt. I don't really like martinis but figured why not try it. It was actually pretty good. The space itself is nice and spacious but there are no places to sit and enjoy your frozen yogurt. They have standing room bar tables around the side of the interior. The staff are friendly as well. I was told that every season the flavors change. I will be back to try other flavors as well.

Really interesting ice cream shop. The martini ice cream was really weird but it actually worked. The garibaldi was refreshing and delicious. Overall kind of expensive and more of an experience than crave-able ice cream but was super cool. Service was great as well.

it was good but nothing mind blowing. Just didn't blow my mind as much as DCP even it's owned by DCP. Glad we went on a day with 0 wait, but service was top notch. keep in mind there's no seating but super vibes inside

There are different types of cold treats: gelatos and more slushie like consistency frozen confections that are served in a cup. My vegan friend appreciated that he could choose from multiple vegan flavors, not just be limited to the one and only offering, which is what most places usually have. Melon flavor was incredible. Tasted like frozen melon was crushed with ice and chopped into an ice/smoothie blend. Super refreshing. Very sweet, though. All flavors are very sweet, so a small portion can be shared and you will feel satisfied. I personally enjoyed their in-house special flavor of gelato: honey cream with crushed almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts. That was bombastic! Love how nutty the consistency was. I love nuts, so this almost reminded me of a chunky peanut butter situation: just more fine grained and smooth, with gelato being the base. Highly recommend trying this flavor! Focacia was okay. A bit too dry and bland for my liking, but still decent. My favorite item was the pistachio bombolone which is officially now my favorite dessert. This was magnificent! The yeasty dough was so light and airy--perfectly light and balanced. The filling of pistachio cream was very delicate and not sweet at all, which was such a nice surprise. I do not like saccharine dessert. The fresh raspberry jam was a perfect balance to the pistachio cream. I never like jams in my desserts, but this was a perfect complement. Woooow, what a treat! Can't wait to return for it and to try more of their other flavors--hazelnut & chocolate, coconut, white chocolate, tiramisu. You could taste the superb quality of the ingredients. Highly recommend.

Don't remember what I had the previous 20+ years I went there after a group dinner. This time I was influenced & specifically took a bus over for their corn ice cream. It's STILL the summer of corn. Prices are now average - good for a scoop $7.50 & the portion is good compared to other craft ice cream shops in LES. The corn flavor was good. Medium flavor with that corn sweetness. The quality of the ice cream was excellent, medium creamy & very smooth with the teeniest bit of corn blended. Sampled the hazelnut which was great also - like a thick gelato. Would like to try the lychee next time. They have probably 20 different flavors, displayed well. The staff is patient & very nice. The space is very big for a business in the East Village with mostly a waiting area. 4-5 seats are up front & they set up a few plastic chairs on the side. On a 90°F day, the shop was filled with customers & groups. A stantion at the door with directions for 2 lines would help manage things better.
