I tend to zone out when anyone uses a term like "paleo" or "gluten-free." I know it is usually followed by the "Children of the Corn" facial expression worn by women in yoga pants who don't vaccinate their children, but wax eloquently on the pseudoscience of "grain belly" and ADHD. I'm afraid that, if I give yoginis too much attention, they will turn into Gwyneth Paltrow. I am afraid, very afraid, that just one more Gwyneth would bring such displeasure from every God that it would bring on the End of Days. How did I get to be so cynical (and so spot on about Paltrow)? My sister actually has celiac disease. She spends her life being terrified that a waiter or baker will confuse her with a food faddist, and feed her wheat. She doesn't need to go to the hospital again, which is what has happened when she accidentally ate gluten. For her birthday, I bought her two fantastic cupcakes here at Unrefined. I thought they were delicious and she didn't get sick. I also liked that they lacked some of the mealiness typical of products made with gluten free flour. Eat here. Yummmm!! I have yet to try something here I didn't like. Having all these healthy options that taste soooo good is almost too good to be true. Vanilla cupcakes and their cookies are to die for! Even the silk pie and pecan pie is epic. Their prices are fair, they will try to meet your particular diet needs and they are consistently fresh. I am surprised Unrefined has a 4 plus review. My husband had a surprise gathering for my birthday. He asked a friend to find a gluten free birthday cake and she chose Unrefined. I've heard of this bakery but never tried it. My review, let me say no one ate it. It was a sheet cake (my husband paid $80 for it!) and NO ONE ATE IT! It tasted like it was made with straight coconut flour and the texture was dense and stiff (even thawed, and tried lightly microwaving it). The frosting was good! I threw the whole cake in the trash. Unfortunately, my family and friends tried gf for the first time and got the wrong ide of what a gluten free cake truly taste like. They are thanking God they don't have to eat gluten free. I wished my husband would have asked me and I could direct him to some AMAZING gluten free bakeries with moist, delicious gf cakes. So, for those looking for a great tasting, moist gluten free cake, go elsewhere. Maybe Unrefined's regular cakes are awesome...gluten free, not so much. Horrible! Ordered a vegan cake for my daughter's Sweet 16 and it was awful. The décor was not like the picture, the cake taste horrible, and only a couple hours after moving it out of the event center it started sinking. When I talked to them they only wanted to give the cost of decor back to me. My baby cried her eyes out about this and the management that finally called me back had no empathy for the problem at all. This cake has been cut three times and each person said it was dry and disgusting. So how does the refund for the decor cover a cake that wasn't edible? I've had vegan desserts before and they taste nothing like this cake did! read more

I was super excited to go to Unrefined Bakery and it was literally the last thing I did before I went to the airport, leaving Dallas. The store front is small but well marked and parking available right up front. I entered the store and there was only one other customer in front of me. Fine, no big deal. I noted that the lady behind the counter was uber friendly with the previous customer ( and the customer after me as well). However, when it came my turn... maybe she was tired... I dont really know... but she seemed mildly standoffish. Nothing too serious, its just really the first time that I felt out of place ( perhaps not exactly welcome?) in a gluten free haven. Anyway, I tried a sample of the brown velvet. Maybe, the non-sample version is different...However, the sample was a dry cupcake with slightly gritty unbuttercream frosting. I passed on buying that and instead went for the special. The special was like a vanilla cupcake with a brownie baked into the center and filled with a chocolate ganache. Glad I wasn't easily scared away, because this "special" was delicious. A moist cake/brownie and rich flavorful ganache, a gal couldn't ask for more. I also was pleasantly surprised to see that Unrefined makes sandwiches. I got the toasted 5 grain, roast beef, with avocado, tomato, and spinach. The bread was lightly toasted and sturdy. Overall this sandwich really carried me through my later flight. I would have given this place a 5, but the feeling that I wasn't exactly welcome in the store was a real deal breaker for me. Hopefully, your experience will be different, they really do have some great goodies! read more

I bought the vegan cupcakes for a friend's birthday and he raved so much that he wanted to go back the next day! My son and I have fallen in love with the the vegan Loaded Monkey. Great combination of flavors and not overly sweet. I also bought the mild "Chex" mix with nuts and it is soooo good. I wish that I had bought the bigger bag. My goodness it is sooo hard to find Paleo treats that are pre-made AND delicious. This place has it going on and I enjoyed every bite. I tried 3 different flavors and loved each of them. The lady at the counter warned me about the texture of the lemon being different than the chocolate, which I appreciated. It wasn't that different at all actually, and I'm quite used to Paleo cupcakes being slightly different than normal cupcakes - because the ARE different. But, different isn't bad! Their vegan cupcakes are sooooo good. They are kept frozen but they can heat them up for you on the spot. I highly suggest the vanilla with strawberry frosting. The ladies are always very friendly and willing to answer all of my questions and the samples are plenty too. read more

I recently was instructed to begin eating a more allergen friendly diet. I have tried several breads but most of them tasted less than average and we're just off. I really like the yeast free sugar free bread here. It tastes good and has been really helpful for managing dietary needs. Highly recommend! I do not need to eat gluten free but I was in a mood to try different bakeries. I got the Lemon cupcake. It was the biggest cupcake out of all the other bakeries. The texture was in between cake and muffin. It was slightly sweet some would say not sweet enough but I liked it. I wanted more icing since it was so big. I liked this cupcake better than a couple other non-GF cupcakes in the area. The lemon flavor was more in the icing, if any, was in the cake. I would go back here. read more

Popped in for lunch and purchased the Loaded Monkey cupcake. I believe it was a banana, chocolate and peanut butter combination. The cupcake was full of flavor and the size was relatively larger than I expected (plus they have adorable to go boxes). The best part was that it was not too sweet like most cupcakes and the frosting was just enough. Yes, it is pricey, but after making my own paleo and gluten free baked goods at home, I recognize how expensive the ingredients can be, so that did not bother me. I will be back. read more

As a wife of a husband who suffers from celiac, finding safe places for him to eat are few and far between. We ran across this place on findmeglutenfree and decided to give it a shot. Their 5 grain bread is awesome! So moist and held together, didn't crumble like so many gluten free breads do. Their sandwiches are quite small, so if you have a decent appetite, order 2. The cupcake I had was full of flavor and moist. The sugar cookie my husband had was soft and everything a sugar cookie should be. I see the other reviews and thought, hmmm why was MY cake so bad? Well I looked and the others had different things so maybe that's it. We had a special celebration for my husband's 60th birthday. We eat organic and I did not have time to make a cake so I called ONE WEEK in advance for this "fantastic" (see ratings!) cake. Chocolate with the fake buttercream frosting. I was quite specific on the day and time I would pick it up. Got there to find they still had the cake in the FREEZER!!! Told it would take 3 hours or more to thaw out. Our dinner was at 5. We had frozen cake. Thanks. Also I found out that they don't even make the cakes fresh. They are made at some plant in Garland, FROZEN there and transported to the store location for people to pick up. And here I'm thinking I'm getting a fresh cake. No one at all told me ANY of this when I called for my great cake. As for the taste? Meh. Absolutely NOTHING to write home about. No real chocolate taste, kind of like a whisper. The frosting was chemical-tasting at best, wanting to be butter cream but afraid to go there. So if you REALLY want an organic and better cake, bake it yourself. Use REAL organic butter and do it right. Save yourself the $45 and actually have a cake you can eat instead of a frozen disaster for a once-in-a-lifetime event of a 60th birthday. read more

Super happy I found this place the other day online and made the trip from downtown! I loaded up and left with a gigantic bag stuffed for $70, which I thought was a pretty good deal considering what all I got. I basically bought one of almost everything. Plus the girl gave me some cookies to try, which was very sweet and appreciated. The cookies were amazing! I actually ate half of them while sitting in traffic on the way home. The other half have been calling my name all day. Then I tried the spicy chex mix stuff - addicting. This morning I ate the carrot cake cupcake for breakfast (don't judge). It was easily the best GF cupcake I've ever had and was better than most wheat ones. If that icing was the non-dairy one, I'm a convert. My birthday is in December and I was already online looking at cake options. Chocolate with the vanilla frosting maybe? I have the sandwich bread and a pumpkin walnut muffin in the fridge for work tomorrow and I'll try to remember to update the review. The one thing I usually hate about GF is too much tapioca flour, which I think is disgusting. I haven't noticed it in any of the things I've eaten so far. The only negative thing I have to say so far is that knowing this place is here won't help me in my quest to stay in my smaller (I've been on a diet) pants. read more

Cake looked beautiful...tasted AWFUL! Gluten free chocolate cake had a weird "rice" aftertaste and the strawberry un-buttercream was sickeningly sweet and tasted nothing like strawberry. Overall, a big disappointment. Definitely won't order another birthday cake from this place. read more
