Had a post vinstorative yoga lunch today at the upper crust with my fellow yoginis. Ordered a half an avocado sandwich on wheat. Honestly, I could have made a better sandwich myself. The avocado was browning and lacked salt. The sprouts were limp and the bread was only ehhhh. However, the meal was saved by the chocolate mousse parfait. I wanted to bathe in it. Rich, chocolate-y, smooth, fresh whipped cream, generous portion, not to sweet. It pretty much rocked my world. I was sad I could only eat half of it. Truly the best Italian Cream cake, if not best bakery, in town! My best friend will only eat cake from here, so I always get her her favorite Italian Cream. Ive tried a few other things as well. Don't let the name fool you...this place is NOT stuffy and their prices are very reasonable. However, their food is a step above the rest! I tried this place on the recommendation of other Yelpers and one review said to try the cheese soup. It was amazing! I was NOT disappointed. I went ahead and bought the large size so I could have some for lunch and for dinner as well. We went on Sunday after having lunch for a dessert. We discovered that if you want a Cinnamon roll you have to get there really early so we missed out on that chance. I had a peanut butter cookie which was ok and my partner had a strawberry and cheese croissant. Both were ok. I would have preferred more peanut butter taste and he would have preferred more filling and less dough. But the dough was very flaky and nice. The hot chocolate was REALLY good. Usually when you order hot chocolate you are in for a disappointed but not this time it was really good. It is a bit pricey and I bought 4 Easter designed cupcakes that were really cute (expensive but cute). If you want a coffee refill it is .50 charge. The cakes were 30.00. Looked nice but again kind of expensive. Worth going back to for another try. I said moderately expensive but for a bakery I really think Pricey is more accurate. read more

I've been coming here since about 1987 when I worked at the Texas Health Dept. lab on 49th St. I think it was back then that I discovered their Cinnamon Rolls and Paraguayan Cornbread and to this day they remain my favorites. Verrrry tasty baked good and herbal teas. Thye have some iced tea, caffeine free that is out of this world. I have so many meetings here. A central location, great natural light, a small outdoor seating spot, the ambience is nice, noise kept to a dull roar and pleasing smells. Delicious home made taste on everything I have had. The sandwiches (chicken salad on wheat) are what got me started here. However, last week I ordered an Apple and Pumpkin pie which were divine. Each was seriously seriously homemade (better than what I can bake for sure) and cost $17 a piece. Delicious pastries. My favorite is the pain du chocolat...the scones are very nice as well. Rationally, I know the coffee is not that good, but I often give in to temptation and buy it anyway. There's something about the feeling of leaving with a little paper bag of sweets in one hand and a warm coffee cup in the other that just makes me happy. read more

Oh my, what an awesome find! I come from New York and I'm accustomed to very good bakeries. I've been in Texas for 7 months and never found a bakery that could give me that real homemade taste. This is one of my favorite places in Austin! Their sandwiches are incredibly tasty and their sweets are even better. The service is friendly and the ambiance is laid back and tasteful - the perfect place to catch up with an old friend over coffee and a croissant. I love their muffins and if you are looking for a lighter lunch alternative the spring rolls are incredibly healthy and light. This place was my heaven during pregnancy. The staff was always quick on the draw, attentive and made me some damn good dirty chai! Their kiwi cheese danish is one of my favorites are their cupcakes are so tasty. My husband loves their quiche and pigs in a blanket. You do have to get there some what early to get the good stuff, since later in the day the pickens are slim. In the morning the line can be a little confusing and the staff can seem to be on overload trying to help everyone as fast as possible, be ready to order quickly and know exactly what you want when they assist you. read more

This is the best bakery ever! it's been around for years and their offerings are consistent in quality and taste. Nice to see folks working here that I've seen over a decade...always a good sign when there's little turnover & staff is happy. The cakes here are amazing ... have ordered cakes for special milestone events through the years, for baby showers, birthdays, office gatherings, & my own wedding shower. Our family favorite is Uppercrust's Gateaux Marissa ... white layers of moist cake with fresh strawberry layered in between. I was in Austin for UT move-in during August so I was on the hunt for a sweet snack before I headed back to Houston. Yelp guided me to this fantastic bakery, and I'm so glad it did! The cinnamon rolls, as everyone has said, are to die for. The outsides are a bit tough, yes, but the warm, soft inside of the roll is better than you can imagine. I also got a chocolate chip cookie; it was a bit hard/crumbly for my taste (I'm a fan of melt-in-your-mouth cookies) but it was still very good. I'll definitely be coming by again!! read more

They have been very generous, and invest in their local community. I work for a nonprofit, and they helped me pay back our volunteers with some great eats. I took my two kids, 9 and 11, there this morning for Pi Day! I my goodness!!! Amazing!!! We ordered a cinnamon roll: just my style, not too sweet and not too gooey. I had a hard time leaving some for my husband to taste. Pecan pie: Perfect! Again, not too sweet and plenty of nuts. Coconut cream pie: my daughter noticed a possible chocolate layer on the crust!!! YUM! Spinach and Tomato Quiche: Holy Smokes, I could eat a whole one for breakfast! Flaky, cheesy, creamy, and moist. Not too salty either! My son tried a chocolate mouse cup with layers and it was quite tasty, too, but not something I would order again. read more

Being in the service industry and F&B industry myself, I really dislike giving poor reviews.... I have to admit, that I have not visited Upper Crust in a while, nor have I heard much about it lately and I now know the reason. After a horrible massage at the massage school, I tried to redeem my attempt at pampering myself for once by stopping in Upper Crust for a nice breakfast pastry and a drink. The blokes at the counter had no personality or service skills, the overly greasy turkey croissant that they heated for me was thrown on the counter in a greasy bag by an extremely sloppy fellow, who unpleasantly shouted that it was ready. Plus, I had to ask where to get my ice tea from.... was I supposed to wait for it? was it self-serve? where are the cups? The Hibiscus tea was just fine, the greasy turkey croissant was just as it looked... disgusting. For the price/cost of this not so lovely experience, I will not be back. There are way too many great eateries in Austin to waste my time and cash at a place that has lost the value in good service & quality. read more

I went in there this morning Friday around 11:00, there was only one guy working at the register. Their ordering system was kind of confusing. I stood around the display case because I wanted a variety of pastries. The guy was really rude and short to me. He might have a bad day but should not give out to the customer. After ordering a dozen cookies for delivery thru Doordash, I realized there wasn't an option to leave a note so I called the store and was told they couldn't include a note because "We have nothing to write on. Love love live this place. My girl friend and I come to Austin Tx 4-5 times a year for a weekend get away from Ft. Worth. She has a giant sweat tooth and I love fresh coffee. So this was a win win and now when we are down we come here for breakfast every morning. The cinnamon rolls are amazing, they are just try. Also the cheese brioche is really good (huge but good)!! Upper Crust is on my Top 10 Places to Chill in Austin, if for no other reason than their Cheese Soup. It is absolutely amazing!! I have spent many pleasant times here, be it Spinach Ricotta Rounds and a latte in the morning... or a scoop of Chicken Salad and the aforementioned soup for lunch. If it is any indication of the quality and ambiance of this place, it seems that Upper Crust has a devout and loyal morning crowd as that everytime I stop in on my way to work, I see famliar and smiling faces. We had a meeting at work and they provided cinnamon rolls from Upper Crust. The taste danced in my mouth for months. I'm not one for really sweet things. These are grown up cinnamon rolls. Flaky and buttery. It's fun to peel each layer of delight, working your way to the center. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you need anything more then this pillow of buttery, cinnamon delight for breakfast, because these are very filling. read more

I feel the history in this place, but its arrangement is awkward at best. Very difficult to get in or out. The environment feels too open and uncomfortable. The cinnamon rolls that I think they're known for, they're good, different, but I don't feel like I was missing anything. I tried about one of every pastry, and one (strawberry danish-the strawberries weren't fresh, they were dry) was disgusting, and the others were overly sweet. I'm a fien for sweets and I know a good pastry, they're appealing, and the taste is ok, but not worth the cost or effort to get there. Everyone was friendly albeit.
