Enjoy the outdoor patio!
C W.

This Austin icon of 40+ years has THE best cookies (the Black Gold was mighty tasty) and other tantalizing breads and cakes which are worth the drive. Wash it down with coffee, lemonades and enjoy the "Keep Austin Weird" vibe on the patio!

Regular coffee, around $5. pretty good

Came on a Saturday late afternoon, and they were still quite busy! This is a chill neighborhood spot serving all sorts of desserts, drinks, and teas. They also have plenty of seating, so a great place if you're looking to study or meet up with some friends. Parking can be a little difficult at times, but they do have a designated lot that does extent to the back of the shop. Regular coffee (pretty standard, but pretty good) -around $5 a cup of coffee. Not too upset by that considering that Starbucks charges about the same price. -great seating, fun, decor, and plenty of round tables to sit around and chat Overall, definitely recommend this neighborhood spot! Will definitely be back to try out their banana cream pie. That thick slice looked absolutely delicious.

Very quaint bakery with quality ingredients. I had the bacon quiche ... absolutely delightful. You really can't go wrong here.

gateau

Tried both a chocolate cake and a strawberry gâteau cake as well as a cinnamon roll. The gateau was amazing and very different from the chocolate cake. Honestly, the chocolate cake was decent, but it tasted like any grocery store could have made it. The cinnamon roll was less doughy and more flaky but buttery and delicious. There is an ordering line and a pickup line (right side) inside.

Upper Crust Bakery along Burnet has become my go-to when I'm craving the classic combination of pastries/baked goods with coffee! I've been here about 3 times and the service is always great, with friendly and attentive staff. All the available pastries, cakes, muffins, etc. are on display and you order at the counter. Good amount of indoor seating, and the tables are spread out enough that it doesn't feel crowded. For parking, there's parking along the side and around the back - this most recent visit, we were able to find a spot without issue but sometimes it can get a bit crowded. Cinnamon Roll (5/5) - A must try at Upper Crust! They run out later in the day, so would recommend going in the morning to snag one (or two). - Nice and buttery, just the right amount of sweetness. Latte (5/5) - Classic latte, no complaints here! Usually get mine with one shot of espresso. Coconut Cream Pie, slice (3.5/5) - Tons of coconut if you're a fan of that! Also a great option to share with others - A tad on the sweeter side, with slightly dry crust Texas Croissant (3/5) - Features Monterey Jack cheese & jalapeños - Decent savory option, but not too memorable Apple Danish (4/5) - Sweet and flaky, with nice texture to the filling All in all, lots of variety, solid flavors, and good service! Great place to meet-up and chat over pastries and coffee. Will definitely be coming back and trying out some of the other items on the menu!

I've ordered so many cakes from Upper Crust over the years, and even though it's not exactly close to me, I don't care, it's freaking delicious! My family goes crazy for the chocolate Italian cream cake. It's super moist, a little thick (in the best way), with layers of coconut and pecans with the most amazing chocolate cream cheese icing. Their carrot cake is also fantastic, my personal favorite, especially for Easter!

aaaaaand I'm back for more. The sausage puff is the perfect savory pastry to enjoy here. The sausage itself is hearty and salty, very filling and satisfying. Next time, I might ask for it to be heated a bit longer so it's served hotter. The pastry wraps around the sausage beautifully, with a golden exterior that has a nice crunch, while the inside remains tender with just the right amount of chew. Gingerbread cookies are a longtime favorite of mine, and I was excited to finally try it here. I love that it is truly gingerbread and not a ginger snap. The soft texture pairs perfectly with the warm, spiced flavor. I would happily eat this any time of year, but I can only imagine how cozy it would feel to have one with a hot drink on a chilly winter day.

So many options here! Love that the cinnamon rolls are huge! Definitely recommend these! Super fluffy and great cinnamon flavor without being overpowering. The chocolate croissant was lacking chocolate. The mushroom quiche was divine - definitely get it warmed up. Great spot to come on a weekend morning!

I will be dreaming about the quiches from here for a very long time! I got their spinach and mushroom quiche and their spinach and tomato quiche and they were both SO GOOD! Me and my mom destroyed their cinnamon roll in minutes and their turnovers taste like pies. Definitely ask for them to heat up the cinnamon roll because it's so great warm. There's never any line and the noise level inside, even when the place is full, is very manageable.

Food 5 stars!! The quiche was fresh! The cinnamon roll was flaky and amazing. The cream cheese croissants was so good and the coffee yum! I took some home to enjoy later. I can't wait! Service 4 stars. Employees barely smiled, they did the job and the line moved quickly. Nothing to complain about just not extra friendly. It was pretty busy too.

Birthday cake

I was coming in from out of town for a birthday and contacted the bakery about a cake. I had an inspo pic but the bakery said they couldn't do that cake due to it being fondant but they offered me some alternatives. I appreciated the alternative options and the effort put into the cake. It was honestly so perfect and tasted amazing! Even better, it was in the price range I was looking for so to me, I feel like I selected the right bakery! I would recommend them highly! Please note I supplied the cake topper and tequila bottles on top but the bakery did the rest. It fit the theme perfectly!

The sauce was not over powering yet very tasty for sure. And the lobster meat. Not sprinkled in like other places. Absolutely not! There was a hefty amount of lobster for sure! They did not hold back. This would be good for a girls night out or a very nice dinner date place. It's attached to a hotel and it definitely had the feel of 'room service fancy' when it came to the entrees. The waygu beef burger was a perfectly uniform bland patty in a sea of lukewarm fries with two sad slices of roma. The waygu steak wasn't bad, but again, room service fancy feel. The Green Goddess salad looked pretty good but expect to pay extra to add a protein. I did like the ambiance. The waitstaff was helpful and informative. The kitchen and bar took a while, even with just a few tables occupied. When we called to reserve a table, they let me know they couldn't split checks and gratted parties over 6, which I expected but appreciated they communicated it. The website was hard to navigate for me and the Happy Hour available under Caroline isn't actually offered anywhere but upstairs. If you have accessibility issues, note that there aren't any restrooms on the first floor. Be prepared to walk a maze through the restaurant, through the coffee shop and either up 4 switchbacks of stairs to the 2nd floor or to ride the elevator on the hotel side to find one. Overall, if you're planning a trip here, I would check out Caroline Upstairs and hit up the upper deck patio for drinks and appetizers and skip downstairs restaurant. Unless you like lukewarm fries with no seasoning! Then, this is your place

Cute little bakery with a sweet older lady who speaks zero English but was nonetheless extremely welcoming and kind. She even gave my toddler a complimentary macaron. Sweet. I am usually pretty adventurous with trying new pastries/snacks and it generally works out well. Unfortunately, I did not like most of the things we took home that day (my husband agreed). A taro egg ball thing -- not fans. A gelatinous rice blob inside a bamboo leaf (believe it's called Zongzi) -- also didn't work for us. Finally, the beef puff (which seemed like a safe bet) fell short of expectations. It's my fault -- I ignored that part that said "beef floss." It had a stringy/processed texture that I just didn't like. I just wasn't a fan of the flavors/textures -- but obviously that's subjective. I did enjoy the garlic bread we also thankfully bought -- it was soft and flavorful. If you're not familiar with the foods, I'd recommend making sure you get a few "safe" items like the cream bread or garlic bread. Ultimately, even though I wasn't crazy about most of what I tried, it was a cute little shop with a nice lady running it.

Definitely one of those places that keeps you thinking about the cookie long after you leave. Everything else in the bakery also looks amazing, but the cookies are absolutely the star of the show. One important thing to note for first-time visitors: be very careful with parking. The lot next door apparently boots cars almost immediately if they see you park there and walk toward the bakery. It's not the bakery's fault, but it's definitely something customers should be aware of before visiting. Parking headache aside, this place is 100% worth the trip.

They were gooey in the middle, perfectly crisp on the outside, and rich without being eye-squinting sweet. The chocolate chip cookies had welcoming textures and flavors. In addition, my server was kind and patient as I made my selection. You could taste the quality of ingredients, and each mouthful was progressively delicious. Definitely try Thoroughbread cookies for yourself. You're in for a treat.

I was able to place my order and pay with Apple Pay. I ordered the Taiyaki Sundae with black sesame and ube swirl soft serve served in a fish shaped mochi Belgian style waffle with Oreo dust on top. You can customize your sundae with filling like organic red sweet beans, Nutella or custard and toppings like Oreo dust, fruity pebbles or rainbow sprinkles. I ate this on site and the nutty black sesame balanced the sweet ube perfectly, and the Oreo topping added the best crunch. They had a variety of mochi donut flavors. Lucky for me, nothing was sold out today. I ordered the Oreo ube mochi donut and ube milk tea to-go. I ate the mochi donut later that day and it was probably my least favorite item from my order. It had the chewy mochi texture however I didn't get enough of the rich ube flavor. It had somewhat of a bitter aftertaste and the Oreo overpowered the ube. I drank the ube milk tea the next day and it was creamy, smooth, and not overly sweet. I really enjoyed the flavor profile of the beverage and would order it again. Overall, enjoyed my selections and will be back to try more dessert options and flavors from one of the most unique Asian dessert spots in Austin!
