Got here around 8:30-8:40 am on a Saturday morning and there was a short line already, but nothing too crazy. Would recommend getting here before 9 am if you're looking to grab something specific. Service is a tad slow, but the line moves pretty steadily. In terms of overall space, there's a connected lot with a decent amount of parking spots available which is great. There's also benches/stools outside so you can enjoy your treats while they're fresh. Pink Cake ($7, 4.5/5) - I liked how the "cake" base itself is more hearty (with corn as the main ingredient) - The buttercream is a very pretty pink, which matches the overall aesthetic of Comadre. It's a tad sweet, but works overall. Empanadas ($7 each, 5/5) - Great savory option! The filling consists of stewed chickpeas, poblano chilies, cheddar cheese. - Comes with a side of tomatillo sauce which adds some nice tang. Overall, really enjoyed our experience! I had just recently watched an Austin PBS episode that featured Comadre - would recommend checking the video out as it highlights a lot of the thought/consideration that goes into this business! This place has been on my list for over a year and last year I wasn't able to stop by while visiting. About a week ago I listen to the chef/owner on the "she's my cherry pie " podcast and her passion and dedication to honoring her heritage and paying an affordable wage while being passionate about quality is impressive. $7.50 may be steep for a pastry but knowing the quality and effort that she puts into every item while paying affordable wages makes it understandable. Anyway, This time it was a must visit on a quick over night trip. I ended up not making it in till around 1230-1 so most stuff was gone but they had the seasonal strawberry sunflower seed concha which was what I wanted anyway. The Concha had a nice crispy outside with a soft airy inside, the jam wasn't too sweet and there was just enough sunflower to kiss your palate to let you know it was there. I would have loved to try other items but what I did try was top notch. Hope to make it by again for more tasty treats soon. read more

As soon as we got out of the car in the parking lot, I knew we were in the right place because holy wow the smells coming from the building were crazy delicious. What I bought: Heirloom Masa Sugar Cookie (v)(gf) × 4 $16.00 ($4.00 ea.) Red Berry Concha × 2 $12.00 ($6.00 ea.) Pink Cake (gf) **contains coconut** × 3 $21.00 ($7.00 ea.) Vanilla Concha $6.00 As someone who can't have gluten, I was so so happy that they had gluten free options! The heirloom masa sugar cookie tastes like your grandmas cornbread in cookie form. It's perfectly soft and practically melts in your mouth, slightly savory with just a touch of sweetness, so freaking good. My kids ate the Conchas so fast I couldn't even get a bite in but the kids all said they were super yummy and we have to go back for more. I had been wanting to go here since I learned about this place and it was worth the months of waiting until coming back down to Austin. This place is a GEM. You can tell there is care for the community and I love it. Pan dulce has always been a staple in my family and to see a place like this where everything is made with such care is special. All the staff members were amazing and the pan dulce itself was unique and outstanding. It was a perfect blend of sweet/savory and high quality ingredients. Coffee here was just impeccable! Flavors mend together so well. I had the Cafe Con Leche and it was just incredible. The conchas were also delicious. Any thing with Masa cake is amazing! Such a gem in Austin! The line was pretty long even at 9AM, it took about 25 min. But completely worth it. The pastries are so creative and fresh and rotate regularly with the mainstays like pink cake and conchas. The empanada was the best I've ever had, as was the concha (which are so dry everywhere else but here they were flaky and perfect). I'd skip the breakfast tacos though as they weren't particularly unique in my opinion. I highly recommend sitting in the patio area. Places like this make me so grateful to live in Austin! read more

Love love love the idea! This well known bakery was at the top of my list for this weekends trip to Austin. A few things just feel short. The carrot cake was not giving carrot cake. The coffee was overly spiced in my opinion. I know it was supposed to be but the anis flavor just took over.The highlights were the empanada and powdered sugar cookie. The vibes were very cute. About 5 people can fit in the shop itself at a time so there is a line waiting but they are fairly quick.The price point is average for Austin. But definitely more than a local panaderia. Came at 8:30 on a Friday morning. There were people there, but luckily not a line. It's absolutely tiny and hot inside, so beware. There is outdoor seating. First the coffee- I had an iced coffee and my friend one of their specialty lattes. The coffee was fine- good! But it did not stand out amongst the million of coffee places on the east side and is priced even higher because as their website states, they pay a liveable wage to their employees. But- the pastries. Their menu changes weekly, but there are some standing items. We got a the savory empanada, the pink cake, and a cherry and black sesame donut. The empanada was amazing- spiced and hot and crispy and delicious. 9/10. The pink cake, according to my Mexican boyfriend, was absolutely perfect. 9/10. But the star of the show- that cherry donut was one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth and I dont even like donuts. The tart cherry filling, the soft fluggy cloud like donut consistency, the sweet crunchy cinnamon sugar on the outside- It was like a $6 or $7 donut which is insane but I DONT CARE. My sister has been going on about this place, so since we were in the neighborhood, we stopped by and hoped they had some roscas left for walk-up sale. They didn't. We arrived and parked in the lot. There was a short line. The bakery is very tiny, so they ask that you queue up outside if there is a line. We walked in as others walked out. We go up to order and they didn't have any roscas. I didn't think I would be in the area so I didn't preorder like a normal human. Honestly, they sounded incredible and I will not fail to preorder next time. So we picked out an assortment: Mexican choco chunk concha, Mexican vanilla concha, prickly pear galleta, pink cake, and Texas winter fresa funfetti cake. I think the Texas winter fresa funfetti cake was my favorite. It was the only one I didn't share. It was so light and whimsical. The cake was fluffy and most with just a hint of icing and delicious layers of strawberry jam. It was will balanced and just the perfect amount of sweetness. I could eat that all day. The pink cake was divine. It practically melts in your mouth. It's topped with prickly pear buttercream which makes me think I need to taste test prickly pears more often. I know I like them, but I can't describe the flavor. The prickly pear galleta was crisp and flavorful. I didn't know if I got the prickly pear flavor, but it was tasty. Inside they were very kind and informative since this was the first time there. Order two chocolate and one golden then the pink cake. All were delicious! No complaints. For drinks got the horchata, one with espresso added in, and americano and then initially ordered a vanilla cold brew and before we finished ordering (and changing minds) that drink was complimentary since it was already made. Drinks were on point as well. We opted to sit outside in the patio area which would have been perfect except lots of flies. The station for trash and dishes was about 20 feet away and when clearing our table and throwing away the trash we realized this was the source. I stopped by recently for their recent weekend special for tacos and Mexican donuts, and it did not disappoint. We ordered one of everything and enjoyed the variety of donuts and tacos. I do recommend going early on weekends. They have a small parking lot but they also have lots of neighborhood street parking that is free. Ordered some conchas, a hostess cake type pastry with passion fruit cream, and a zucchini focaccia. The coffees are made with oat milk and an iced coffee hit the spot. The baked goods were rich in flavor, but not overly sweet which is a nice change from most available baked goods. The hostess cake had an earthy citrus flavor that I hadn't experienced before. These were airy layers like croissants but not greasy or flaky and the topping was slightly sweet and not floury or dry. Nothing about them is dry, which has been my experience in the past. Honey! And the award for best cake goes to the pink cake. It's the most moist cake, spongy texture and not too sweet so the buttercream can do its thing. Also it's the perfect cake/icing ratio for me. I'm not going through each thing but winner for savory things was the salsa macha focaccia- shit was . Not a ton of parking but I guess my best tip is go during crappy weather LOL, no seriously and when they first open and parking might be easier since it's limited and of course less of a line. I really appreciate the quality and passion put into all of these bake goods. I don't know they do it. When you walk in, you can see (and smell) racks and racks of beautiful baked items and you just want one of each. They have the longest glass case full of Mexican baked goods on the planet ... And it is all wonderful. But this is Nouveau Wacko Mad Genius Mexican baking. You know what? Nouveau Wacko Mad Genius Mexican Baking is just fine by me. * * * A few ground rule before we get to the goodies. Comadre's is in a two-house-stuck-together complex they share with Nixta Taqueria and the 12th Street Kitchen. That is some impressive company. Comadre's does not get a lot of space. They have a baking kitchen they share with the other places. They have a long thin room about the size of 12 shoeboxes stuck end to end where they serve all the goodies. There are like four stools at a counter - and the baking case. The baking case has enough room for maybe eight pastries, four on the top and four on the bottom. If they crowd things, they can fit in Pastries 9 and 10. This means you do NOT want to go when the place is crowded. Crowded means more than three people in the establishment at the same time. Weekends everyone who is not having breakfast at Paperboy is over at either Nixta or Comadre's. The only time you want to be with all those people is if you are running as a political candidate and you want to hand out fliers and shake everybody's hand. Otherwise, come on a weekday and come either just when they open or around lunch time when they are finishing out their day. * * * How is the baking? Pure electrodes to the pleasure center of the brain ! With recipes that are intellectually interesting too ! So College Professor You is breaking down the composition of your dish ... While Four Year Old You is going COOKIE ! COOKIE ! COOKIE ! * * * I did not recognize a single dish among the eight pastries that were in the pastry cabinet my day. Sure - from reading the labels - I knew what everything was. But I had never seen those or eaten those ever before in my life. They were all variations of something familiar - but variations that only a Next Generation Baker would have thought of. * * * I had a Texas Corn in a Cup Croissant. You have had Texas Corn in a Cup at elote trucks. You have never had Texas Corn in a Cup in a pastry. They call the pastry a croissant - but it is really a millefeuille. A magnificent beautifully executed millefeuille. Like a phyllo dough (but not made of phyllo), The pastry is made up of sixty or seventy or eighty different super-thin layers. It has a rich, whole buckwheat-y taste. It is light as a cloud but tastes and feels substantial. I could have eaten that millefeuille all day and all week and been happy even with nothing on it. * * * Now on top of that you put ... Corn. Then Mayonnaise. (MAYONNAISE?) Queso Fresco (Queso Fresco?) Note: No cream cheese like the Cheese Danish that you get at a plain old bakery. On top of all that, you put Red Mexican Tajin powder. (The chili powder that you dump on your Mexican corn out of that stainless steel shaker.) On regular corn in a cup at an elote stand, the mayo cuts the chili powder and the chili powder cuts the mayo. The queso adds a rich but acid quality. Put all this on a magnificent millefeuille. And then add the sweetness you get from the Texas Sweet Corn itself. I went to the Moon. I went to the Stars. I went past the Planet Saturn. On the way back, the Man in the Moon and the Cow Who Jumped Over the Moon all said hello. It was happy happy happy times. * * * Now there were seven other pastries presented in that case. And they swap the offerings out every few weeks or so. So Samuel C. has some unfinished business. Don't expect to see him at Comadre's microbakery on a weekend morning. Life is too short to spend your time waiting in line. * * * But Comadre has just given me a powerful incentive to wake up early on weekday mornings. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesdays. Contrary to what it says here on Yelp, they are actually open on Thursdays. They are also open on Mondays. The term "Blue Monday" has now become obsolete. read more
