Unlike some of the other reviewers, I have NEVER had a snooty, snotty, or otherwise badly behaved server. Everyone has always been nice to me. I like all the food I've ever gotten here; and the deserts are great. I especially love the quiches and the cranberry orange scones. The broccoli salad with the onion and bacon is one of my faves as well, and I like that you can order it by the pound, so you get the quantity you want. Very good coffee, too. I just picked up a peach pie, it is gorgeous, and HUGE! Can't wait for desert time tonight to eat some. read more

Love the black bean chili!!! Try it you will not be disappointed. The jalapeño cornbread muffin if you can get it fresh is the best. But good if not fresh. Ask them to shock it in the oven. read more

Worst. Service. Ever. My daughter and I stopped in yesterday to pick up a variety of pastries to feed a large group of people for my son's 24th birthday. We were met at the counter by a bearded gentleman who apparently did not know how to smile.. I'm not even sure he said hello. I told him that we would be ordering a number of items. My daughter selected a few, then as I started to choose something a woman walked up to the counter with two plates of food in her hands and proceeded to say something to the man helping us. Now, what he should have done is said, "I will be right with you as soon as I finish helping these customers".. But what he DID do was walk away from me ( as I was literally speaking and pointing to the cupcake I wanted ) to go assist the woman. He did not excuse himself or apologize and say that he'd be right back..... he just left. My daughter and I looked at each other in shock. The woman behind us said, "Did that really just happen?" After 5 minutes - we timed it - he still hadn't returned, nor did anyone else step up to see if we were being helped. Needless to say, my daughter and I turned and left - leaving our partial order in the box for the man to put back in the case. We took our business straight to Tin Roof where we were warmly greeted and given full attention to.. Our purchase came out to $45 that could have gone to Upper Crust had we not been treated so rudely. We won't be back and made sure to tell everyone at our party what a horrible experience we had. We were told by quite a few friends that they also received bad service by the employees and that's why they have not gone back. Perhaps a lesson in customer service is needed... read more

For vegans/vegetarians or for someone searching for a not so expensive lunch with awesome original flavors, go to the Upper Crust in downtown Chico. They make no claims to being vegan but there is much vegans/vegetarians can choose from. Eat from the deli or try something from the menu. They also have good coffees, teas and a bakery. They are happy to tell you if the food contains animal products and I haven't tried anything yet that I haven't liked. They allow you to sample before you choose too. read more

I love going for lunch too but make sure you make it in by 2:30 or they will cut you off:( The grilled California Veggie is my favorite, I wish they would spruce up the menu. One of my favorite coffee shops in chico, and my all time favorite in the downtown area. Their coffee is great, and their cupcakes are even better. I hear the food is fantastic as well but I have yet to try anything other than their cupcakes. They really are very consistent at one thing: poor customer service. It has easily been over 18 months since the last time. I thought, you know, I'll try it one more time. Greeting? Nope. Shhh. We don't want to disturb the staff. They look like they're busy and I don't want to bother them. Oh, I'll look at the quiesces, oh, and back here are the sweets---wait a second. Are these people cutting behind me? Hey, I was in line. Hey wait, I was just looking before I---. Get a freakin' number/ticketing machine! Customers like to look at your offering *before* ordering. Tip: most of those people walking in the door are customers. Acknowledge them, they help keep you in business. I'll try again in another 18 months. read more

Horrible experience and the cake was so dry no body even finished their slice , ruined our godsons party in my eyes . First they had us send a picture to them of what we wanted and said to expect a call back , well no call after 4 days , then we called them because it was so close to party we couldn't go anywhere else and we were hoping our cake was being made , on the phone they didn't know what I was talking about so I finally talked to 3rd person and was told they could not make it how we wanted it, it would have been nice to know that long ago by returning our call . They made us a cake we settled for and when I went to get it they added $10 to price I was quoted on phone , then I looked at it and they did not put happy birthday on it at all or any writing at all that we discussed,and said they were too busy and nobody there could do it for us . This bakery is the epitome of high quality and SUPERB cakes. My husband ordered a rasberry/rum white cake for my birthday and it was AMAZING! WEDDING CAKE PERFECTION! :) What an amazing bakery! They made us two incredibly delicious gluten free cakes for our wedding! It was so nice to offer a dessert that everyone could enjoy (since the father of the bride and a few guests had severe gluten allergies). I work downtown so i love going to upper crust. My favorite thing is the black bean chili with lots of pesto. I really perfer going in the fall because of all the soups. They also have a great chicken pot pie. On the weekends i will go grab a coffee and get my daughter one of their cookies which are also delicious. If you are with a larger group of people its a good place to go because there are so many different choices. read more

They always make the best cakes but this last week, they went above and beyond and I felt compelled to sing them praises. I picked up a cake for a friends birthday and placed it on my counter. Did you know back in the stone age they baked for the Starbuck's downtown? Back than there was only one Starbuck's. Anywayz, those Berry Bars were addicting, I would race over in my high heels at break (the upper crust was closed). Since, Starbuck's went what ever all over town and unfortunately decided to ship in from far away their stale things. Whatever, their loss because breakfast and lunch at the Upper Crust is always a good thing and they amaze me with their yummy everythings. I love soup and they have a bunch of choices to choose from. Always, something a bit better than the rest with something extra added. I never have passed up a trip in because of the street parking because there is always a spot. It is like folks just run in and run off with their treat of perfection. Truly, it is that good, someday I will get a gigantic specialty something from the Upper Crust. I have always used Upper Crust Bakery for my go to when I have wanted a special dessert or just a great morning treat for the office. Twice in the past month, I have been thoroughly disappointed, especially with the service. In late April, I ordered a cake and I was assured it would be baked fresh the day that I scheduled for pick up. I got a call and was told that the power had gone out the previous night and they didn't feel comfortable selling me the cake. If the cake had been baked the day it was supposed to be this wouldn't of been a problem. So a plain cake for a very special person. When I picked up the cake, I guess I appeared disappointed and was rudely asked if there was something wrong and so I stated what happened and so she gave me a whopping $3.00 discount. The cake was not as good as it should of been since it wasn't as ordered. Just recently a cake was ordered for my birthday and when it was picked up, they brought out a fruit torte and then proceeded to argue about what was ordered. They finally went and got the original order and it WAS a cake not a torte that was ordered. Imagine that? Their offer to make it right? Free fruit topping (three Strawberries on top) and delivery. Food is delicious! It's the service that is disappointing. It seems as though everyone who works there hates their job and doesn't like it when you ask for a small favor. One time I was buying food and right as she entered the amount I owed I was like oh can I get a drink too? And you could tell she was so annoyed. Upper Crust has become one of my favorite morning haunts. If you have a choice, let Mary wait on you: she's the petite woman with the fabulous dark wavy hair and sparkly eyes -- great sense of humor and not your usual barrista. I was talking with a friend and it turns out she has a fan club of sorts (of mostly old farts like me). Go Mary! It's what I like most about the place -- sure, the food is good, but it's a friendly comfortable place for all ages. So much of downtown caters to the college crowd and it's nice to be in a broader milieu sometimes; nice to see everyone. read more

A Chico institution for about as long as I can remember. I recommend EVERYTHING on the menu. The entryway eating area is fantastic for enjoying the more mild Chico weather and it's a great place to people watch. The staff are very helpful, keep the place spotless. I couldn't imagine a trip with my toddler to Children's Park without stopping in for a chocolate biscotti. Upper Crust Bakery is one of the few long time downtown businesses that makes Chico Chico! They have outlasted any cafe that I can remember in the downtown area and that is testament to the awesomeness that is Upper Crust! read more

I can't say enough about the amazing experience I had when I ordered my wedding cake. One of the owners,I believe her name is Laurie, took time to help me decide what I needed since I had very little figured out beforehand. More importantly, the cake was unbelievably awesome. It has been over a month since the wedding and people are still craving more of the chocolate mousse cake, myself included. I chose this bakery based on a recommendation. I was planning a 50th wedding anniversary party for my parents and wanted a beautiful cake. They did a fantastic job. First of all, I was planning the party long distance and they were very good about calling me back when I had questions. They gave me advice, allowed a relative to come in and taste the flavors for me, and allowed me to send them photos of cakes I found off the internet. The two tier cake they created was just gorgeous. The frosting was the best I've ever had and the rasberry filling was great. Many people at the party made comments about both the look and the taste of the cake. I was very glad I paid attention to that recommendation. read more

We are always on the look out for restaurants that serve gluten free options, so we headed to Upper Crust to see what they make. The place was hoppin'; even so, the staff was all smiles and good attitudes. A huge bonus in my book, because no one likes to eat where grumpy people work. I started off with a coconut macaroon, which are twice as big as any other place makes. Another bonus. Their foods are marked if they are gluten free or vegan, making it easy to narrow down lunch choices. The chicken salad was savory and hit the spot. The only reason I give them a 4 instead of 5 is because the empty tables were dirty and we couldn't get someone to give us a hand in cleaning. read more

In the past I wrote a review on my birthday cake. It wasn't a great experience at first, but I have to say the owner went above and beyond any other business in order to make it right. I recently went in and ordered several things including a super yummy tuna-dill sandwich. Note: I hate dill.. big Oh-NO! But this sandwhich was REALLY GOOD!! It wasn't all full of mayo and runny it was just right! I also ordered a ton of cookies.. I have to say my daughter is in love with the fudgies. and I loved the peanut butter chocolate chip ones! I also ate.. (( This is what happens when I skip breakfast and im starving apparently I eat everything. )) a lemon coconut bar and it had the best flavor out of anything I think I have ever tasted. The crust was so buttery and delicious. I can not wait to go back and get more of them! I just hope they make them on a daily basis. They also had some cupcakes which looked really yummy but I just wouldnt have been able to stuff them in my piehole. :) I have to say this is the BEST bakery in Chico. and if its not to you, try it again.
