We've been regular customers for many years, shopping their breads and pastries at the Farmer's Market even before the bakery opened in Davis. However, having access to their Pumpernickel Raisin bread anytime I want, and enjoying a croissant and a rugelach here and there make me wonder how I survived before they arrived. Adding to the joy of their baked goods are the nice people who own it and those who ring up your order. I couldn't be anymore enthusiastic if I tried! Bought a pumpkin pie and pecan cranberry pie at the farmers market @ Jack London Square. The pumpkin was the worst pumpkin pie I've ever tried. It was SO salty? I bought a loaf of sourdough whole wheat bread at the farmers market at Cesar Chavez park in Sacramento yesterday. The bread was lovely. Flavorful and light with a nice brown crust. However this morning I went to make some toast and the whole bottom of the loaf was covered in mold! At $6 a loaf I had hoped to get more than one slice. Forgot to pick up a baguette for my picnic on the way and was please to see a stand with bread. I had their sliced fermented French bread and a round loaf with rosemary from the farmers market in Davis. Both were exceptionally dry. I expected the round to have a crispy crust and soft moist interior and it turned out to be like one big stale cracker. Very disappointing at $6 a loaf. read more

I am baffled by these negative reviews. The Upper Crust rocks, as evidenced by the line you'll always find in front of their booth at the downtown Sac farmers markets. For more years than I'd like to admit, I have bought cookies from them week in and week out throughout farmers market season. Yum! They are of course best when they've just been delivered, still melty from the oven, but they're even good the next day (if you can restrain yourself from eating them all at once!) This review is for the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and the peasant bread (I think is what it was called). I had a few of the oatmeal choco chip cookies and they were incredible. I'm not a big fan of oatmeal cookies, but these bad boys were chewy, sweet and the chocolate chips set them off as you crunched into them. I ate a few more than I was supposed to and likely deprived others of the joy. Sorry folks. The peasant bread, a large circular loaf that is segmented into tearable rolls, is super soft, and was perfect warmed up a little and served with melted butter. I've never seen this style of bread anywhere else and it is both delicious and almost worthy of a conversation. I'd grab another sack of those cookies any day. read more

Noticing their donations was my first experience with them; then I finally went and bought some bread and it was SO GOOD. Went too late in the morning to try out any pastries but was so happy with the bread and couldn't stop eating it all day. Reminded me of my mom's homemade bread. Parked near their warehouse location and was going to stop in and ask about where their normal store was located after getting a bike tire next door, owner came out screamed at me to move (no lines on the pavement by the way), asked him to ask me a little more nicely (please?) since theres no reason to be dramatically hostile, told me my cynicism will get me no where. Located at the Saturday Davis farmers market, Upper Crust Bakery is a must if you are there. It's been at this market for at least 20 plus years. The owners are always be there and are very nice. 1st, the cookies, especially the chocolate chip oatmeal, are the best I've ever had, and I've preferentially chosen oatmeal whenever I've selected a cookie anywhere. We've purchased a number of their bread loaves over the years and have been consistently delighted with them, enough so that I recently outbid others at the Sacramento Youth Symphony's "Magic of Music" silent auction for a year's worth of coupons for Trudy, Mo, and Gillian's wonderful baked goods. P.S.: I find their cookies (even the day olds) freeze well and return to their warm, moist and fragrant selves with 10 seconds of microwaving. read more

I don't usually give a bad review on Yelp. If I have something negative to say I say it directly to the manager/owner so that they might improve . I really want businesses and makers of good /potentially good products to be successful. However I'm going to say that I was very disappointed in the quality of this bread. The whole grain bread I purchased had a very overly processed odor ,taste, appearance and texture. I plan to investigate to see if they really use whole grain ingredients as listed . And I plan to give this review to the vendors personally next time I see them at the Farmer's market. read more

I came on Yelp to find out if this place has a store front because I'm eating the best bread right now! Sadly no, but I'll be looking for them at the farmer's market from now on. I got it at the small farmer's market in Downtown Sac Fremont Park. I'm not sure of the exact name but I bought a wheat, walnut, raisin loaf. It's a dark brown color with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. I bought it from the day old pile for almost half the price. It's 100 degree weather and perfectly soft and fresh. I'm writing this review the day after I bought it and it's still very fresh. I'll make sure to finish it tomorrow because fresh baked goods like this are meant to be consumed within a few days. The girl working the table was personable and said she liked to eat the bread that I bought with cream cheese and she chatted up another customer. I have been patronizing their stall at the Davis a Farmers Market for about a year. I really want to like this baker, so I keep giving them a second try, but I think I'm finally done. I had a terrible customer service experience yesterday (not the first), and involved the staff person being rude to not just to me, but to my 2-year-old daughter, who was waiting patiently next to me by the cash box while I paid an exorbitant price ($10) for hot cross buns, and then was told that I would have to pay for a bag as well. As I fished for change, my daughter was trying to take a bag off the rail and the girl snapped at her JUST ONE. She was only trying to take one. When I found I only had big bills, instead of saying, Oh that's okay, or, Make it up next time, the sales person blanked me and turned to the next customer. We left the bag, and I wish I had asked for my money back and left the rolls as well. At a farmers market where friendliness and goodwill are the rule, and there are a lot of people with little kids, I find their unfriendliness and nickel-and-dimey attitude strange. Moreover, their baked goods are simply not good enough to overcome the attitude problems that seem to be endemic to the staff, from the owner/manager to the sales people. I have tried to bring this up with the person I presume to be the owner in a friendly way but have not found her receptive. Some time ago, I stopped buying the loaves marked fresh because they were often already stale. The cookies are made with margarine. Unfortunately the bar for bakeries in Davis is low but I would really welcome another option. read more

I tried one of their Challah loaves at the Folsom Farmer's Market a couple years ago, and wrote my review at that time. I was then contacted by the owner expressing his disappointment that I hadn't had a good experience with the Challah. He asked me to try it again. I went by last weekend to pick one up. Took it home with me for both my spouse and I to try it. It was much better than the one we had bought in 2014. I am not sure what a traditional Challah should taste like, never having bought one or tasted one at a Jewish bakery. However, the ones we have had by small boutique bakeries have always been more sweet than not. This one that we had from Upper Crust Baking Company had some raisins in it this time, which helped to sweeten the loaf somewhat. However, in our opinion, from the previous Challah breads that we have had in the past, this one almost got it. There was this "just on the edge" perfect sweetness, but not quite. So, while this one wasn't bland, as our first one was in 2014, it was still just not quite there. The raisins helped to make it tastier, so I was glad I got the one with raisins and not without, as that would probably not have appealed to our taste buds. They had a cranberry wheat bread that looked interesting, which I might try in the future, but their Challah does not taste totally like the ones I have had at other boutique bakeries. read more
