This was my second visit here at the Upper Crust Pizza. We had reserved a table for what ended up being nine people. This second time here was different in a sense everyone here was related and everyone was looking forward to hearing stories of our family. First off I have to mention that since we were a large group we ordered based on how many pizzas to order, plus how many salads to provide for our group. When the pizzas came to our table, like many other pizza places they are placed on the rack to make enough room to eat and enjoy the pizzas. I must admit that I tried a piece of a couple of the pizzas and they were really good. The service was excellent and the restaurant is kept clean. Come on Tuesday's to take advantage of the discount prices. Upper Crust is located south of the 101 Freeway and Cave Creek Road. It's a very busy location and it doesn't matter what day of the week it is. I would recommend that you try your favorite kind of pizza but their sausage pizza is tasty and good. It was cozy and dimly lit with plenty of TV's. We watched the game while having a glass of wine, Caprese salad, and build your own Calzone. The marinara sauce served on the side was good. My husband liked it too, but wished they used the marinara inside instead of as a dipping sauce. He also wished they used mozzarella instead of ricotta inside the Calzone. There's another side of the restaurant that's family friendly. We've eaten there before a year ago and tried the veggie pizza, which was great. This place is perfect for a large group. I had a girls night here with a reservation for 12 and they had our table all prepared for us when we arrived. We were in a back room all to ourselves. It was cozy and private and our service was stellar. Nico was the name of our server. He was efficient and friendly. He was willing to split our checks in whatever way we wanted. There was no large group fee. He gave us the space we needed to visit but took great care of us at the same time. We were a little disappointed that we couldn't order off the happy hour menu but it was understandable that they only offer it on the patio and in the lounge. My daughter and I shared a half pound of wings, a create your own calzone, and tiramisu. The tiramisu was to die for! The calzone was huge and filled with ricotta cheese. The wings were crunchy and delicious. Been going here a while now. The food is good and service is rather good too. It's not like a normal sit down where a waiter comes and takes your order unless you go in the lounge which is 21+ only. If you choose normal seating you have to order at the counter. The food has been consistently good. I love the stuffed mushrooms so much. Maybe because I like mushrooms a lot. The only thing is the mushrooms are 15$! You get maybe 8 mushrooms filled with cheese and some sausage but 15 dollars is very excessive. I see this more as a 10$ dish than anything. Maybe 12 if you want to increase profit. My family ordered a large pizza with black olives and pepperoni and half with mushrooms. It was 35$ for that pizza. The prices at this place is the only thing I can't understand quite well. They didn't use to be this expensive. But on a more positive note the butter cake is the most delicious thing ever. We stopped for lunch, and my first impression was that they were understaffed they had one poor waitress doing everything from answering the phone, taking orders, and cleaning her own tables. It's semi self serve she hands you menus, and you decide what you want, then you go to the counter and order get you plates, silverware, and cups to get your own beverages and then she brings you the food. They do have a nice selection of pizza pasta and salads and reasonably priced lunch specials, but overall, the regular menu prices seemed a little high. We ordered a Margherita Pizza $27.50 and two side houses salads $5.25 not listed on the menu, but I asked if they had one, and she said they did. The pizza was very good and we enjoyed it very much. Ordered a plate sized pizza with sausage and a side of smoked wings w/ranch. It's usually really good, but this last time the wings must've been smoked a little too long because they tasted a little burnt. I went in to place a to go order but apparently they don't care about taking orders anymore. Three people came out from the back and no one even acknowledged I was there. Young man comes out on his phone and walks past me without a glance. A lady came out with a glass rack and looked at me but said nothing. Then worst of all a young woman came out to the counter where I was standing three feet away - also on her phone - and started folding napkins. She didn't look at me, didn't say anything, just stared at her phone. I don't mind waiting if staff are busy. I want to start by saying the food was great. This rating is purely based on the service. We came in for the free pizza with purchase of salad promotion. We came with another party who also had the same coupon. Brought it up to our server to see if we could use both at the same table as long as we had separate checks. To which she said yes, as long as you don't combine with any happy hour food. When our bill came out it was given to us by the manager. Who before saying anything else to us mentions to us that only one coupon was usable per table. That is fair, if we had not asked ahead of time and been told it was okay. We got twice the salad and pizza based off our servers response. The manager spent the next 5 minutes arguing with us saying she could not accept doing both coupons and saying our server was saying that we never asked about using the 2 coupons on separate checks. Which was not true and if it was true our own server who was still there would have walked up, saw us try to pay with both coupons and brought up the misunderstanding then. In reality she clearly told the manager about the situation because they knew they made a mistake and the manager came up to us directly to turn the misunderstanding on us. When we mentioned we would have probably just shared one salad and pizza if our server told us the correct information, the manager mentioned there was still nothing we could do and we had to pay full price for one of the pizzas. We asked if there was anyway to ring us up under a different table to fix the issue instead of paying $30 more for miscommunication. At this point she became very rude and said that's not possible and anything like that would be coming directly out of her check. My wife has worked as a chef and managing restaurants for over 10 years, never has she seen someone unable to make an edit on a bill like this, no one is believing that she is paying $30 out of her own pay because of a miscommunication by her server. We told her that we were not going to pay for the extra pizza (in reality if both of us just sat at a different table or came in at different times they would make the exact same money). She then angrily started reaching across us to clear our table and took our bill with the one coupon. She returned with our bill and card then said she would cover our other parties bill out of her own pocket and angrily stormed off. Of course they left cash making up the total of the salad and some for a tip as it was never our intention to get one over on Upper Crust Pizza. As we left we heard her yelling into the kitchen and bad mouthing us as we left. We have never experienced worse customer service in any food establishment. We have gotten pizza from upper crust for a number of years and they have lost customers today who all in all had a great time other than the awful attitude by the manager.
