Since Gualala has limited services and restaurants, this is really the only pizza place in town. The ingredients taste fresh and crust is a pretty good crust. I am a fan of thin crust and this crust I would say is medium thickness, hence the lower rating. The staff are always friendly. read more

After years of driving past this place on our journey north on the CA-1, we finally stopped in to give this place a try. It was actually the only place open on a weird Sunday where the Thai place was closed for remodeling and almost all other restaurants were either closed or out of business. Their loss, our win. The pizza was fantastic and the folks running it super nice and efficient. We will definitely be back regardless of what else may be open. We ordered the large house special, loaded with pepperoni, sausage, black olives, fresh peppers and onions and a nice sauce with just the right amount of cheese. Wife had a grape soda and I had a beer on tap. The pizza was perfect and we took a third of it home to enjoy a second day for lunch. Walked in at 7:27 PM. Drove over 50 miles in a rush to get here with time to order. Girl at counter refuses to take our single pizza order because "We've got like 15 pizzas on order right now and we close at 8". I politely Inquire if closing at 8 per the sign on the door ACTUALLY means closing at 7:30. "No we close at 8, but like I said we've got 15 pizzas on order, so I can't take any more orders". That's it, end of discussion. Pizza Nazi says no pizza for you! There are few options in Gualala for carry out food at night, which creates a tough situation for tourists that don't get there before "closing time". To the proprietor - I can only hope you are painfully unaware that your staff is clearly more concerned with getting out the door than making even a minimal attempt at satisfying a first (and now last) time customer. If you ARE aware of this practice, or have explicitly made this your policy, then please change your stated hours to reflect that. May I suggest: "Open 4 - 8 PM (unless we get busy, and decide to cut off orders at some arbitrary time prior to closing)...". We picked up a couple of small pizzas from here last night. Chicken pesto and standard combo. Took us a couple of try's to get thru to place order by phone but worth the small extra effort. Once we ordered all was well organized, our pizza ready in 25 min they said it would take and hot when we picked up. Good size pizzas for small. Toppings were great it would be hard to pick favorite between the two. The toppings, cheese and sauce were all well balanced and the crust was as well. Not too thick or thin. Not a soggy bottom on either pizza. My hubby said he was going to crave these and sad we won't have available at home. We will just have to visit area more often! read more

We noticed the staff was great with kids and neighborhood regulars too. In Gualala it seems hit or miss- half the time you get really nice people and great things, the other half you get overpriced items and rude people. Don't blink, you may miss it. This is our 2nd time here. Sourdough crust, original toppings, fresh ingredients, piping hot from the oven- our fave is the blue cheese, chicken and bacon! Sit by the front windows for a view of Hwy 1 and the ocean while enjoying your pizza and a few glasses of wine or beer. One bite, everybody knows the rules... Upper crust is on the shore of Mendo / Sonoma coast on hwy 1. It's a smaller space but they make good use of it all. I wasn't drinking however they have a solid roster of brews on tap. Staff was friendly and quick to service. That all said, we are here for some pizza and I am hungry. The XL meat lovers pie made fresh and goes oven to table still sizzling. It's hot, don't burn yourself. Toppings are generous so you get a bit of floppy slice. Good cheese. The sauce has almost a sweetness to it, I don't hate it but I don't love it. The crust is underwhelming and perhaps not best designed to carry all the high quality toppings to their destination. Tastes perfectly fine but could be so much more. At that price point I do want more. +1 Star added for exceeding expectations with service. It was a dark and stormy night... (no really, it was)....a man and a woman wandered into Upper Crust looking for a warm seat and a hot bite. They got more than they asked for. The restaurant was quiet by then, no other patrons present at that hour. The couple was warmly greeted by a woman and a young man. They passed the evening, conversing with the chefs (just the right amount) and one another... savoring the deliciousness of extra cheese, pepperoni, and green peppers ....enjoying the simply charming space...Suddenly, they heard a helicopter above. They shared a knowing glance that said, "No matter what happens, we must protect The Package." They quickly esconded the pizza through the hole in their faces, paid the tab (very reasonable), high-fived the hosts, and slipped away into the darkness. In summary: The Upper Crust is a great little spot. Unassuming, welcoming, affordable, and delicious. Will definitely visit the next time we're in town. read more

Had pizza twice at Upper Crust while visiting sea ranch. First day we asked for two smalls so we could try two. He made us a large and split it in half bc he said it would be cheaper. So nice of him. We got the Mediterranean and the House. Both very good, but our last night we ordered a large Mediterranean bc it was our favorite. It was so fresh and tasty and reminded us of a pizza we loved in Chattanooga TN Be sure to get some of their ranch for the Mediterranean. It is the perfect compliment. read more

I would have given a 5star but the employees need a bit of fine tuning. It was a busy Saturday night and customer service was lacking a bit. I don't think "food handler" rules are enforced here nor do the employees seem to care. On a brighter note- the pizza was excellent! The crust was the right thickness and the toppings were fresh. Simply put, this place is for you if you're looking for delicious food, a clean restaurant, and a friendly staff. The atmosphere is casual and laid back. We chatted up the owner as he made our pizza and were pleasantly surprised by the quality. We ordered a custom pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and artichoke hearts. Perfect thickness with a good soft to crunchy ratio and not too much grease. The only thing that could be improved upon were the salads - caesar in our case. They were pre-packaged and something you'd expect to get from the quick grab section of the grocery store. Since people come here to get pizza, it's not a deal breaker. I'd just suggest getting a bigger pizza and skipping the salad. Would return for another delicious pie if in the neighborhood. read more

What a gem! I have been coming to Gualala for years & this place has made a complete turn around I gave up on this pizza a long time go. I heard they had new owners so decided to give them another chance. I am so glad I did. It is seriously the best pizza I have had! I even waited to give them a review until I had been more than once. I have stopped here 3 times since the new owners took over and each time I am more and more impressed. They continue to update the inside of the restaurant making it such a pleasant place to sit, stare at the ocean & eat delicious food. The owner (mark) is so welcoming. The Mediterranean pizza here is by far the best thing since sliced bread. Artichoke hearts, klamata olives, tomatoes, onions and some other stuff. It is heaven on dough. Fantastic! Finally a place that really knows how to cook pizza!! We are staying at Sea Ranch and wanted pizza for dinner. My husband saw this place yesterday so we decided to come back. Both the pesto chicken pizza and whichever pepperoni one my husband got were amazing. Toppings to the edges...and lots of them! Lots of cheese and most importantly...the crust was cooked and held all the toppings and sauce. Even after eating a few slices, the rest were still crispy! Snd their ranch is great too! Walking up this place smelt amazing! I always judge a pizza joint by the smell outside. I ordered the meat lovers, added pineapple of course, and an order of wings. The pizza was great, they do a really good job on their crust. It's very old school pizza parlor not chain pizza crust. The wings were good to, often when you get wings from a pizza place they are suuuuper fatty, not here. The customer service was great too, I think there was a big party in front of us and they were able to squeeze us in between their order and we only waited 20 min. Had a couple of delicious pizza's from Upper Crust this past weekend and would definitely recommend them & will go back next time I'm up in Sea Ranch. We were driving past and stopped by to get takeout. The team were really busy and had a backlog, but were very friendly & apologetic, took our order and confirmed a time to come back to pick up our pies. They were absolutely spot on with their timing and the second pie was coming out of the oven just as I walked in the door. My buddy and I stopped at Upper Crust on our way down hwy 1 and it did not disappoint. We were hesitant to show up at 7:50pm when they were closing at 8 pm, but they were more than happy to serve us and even let us stay after closing to finish our pizza and beer. Super friendly staff and the owner, Mark, is a fantastic guy. We asked them for recommendations on a good place to camp in the area, and they allowed us to stay for free in their parking lot. We got there at 7 pm but we're rudely told "if you didn't call ahead and order a pizza for pick up then, sorry we're done for the night. Keep in mind their posted open hours were from 4 - 8 pm. We just kind of looked at the guy and he just stared back. Wow! Really!?! We're just done for the night, an hour before they were supposed to close! Ok then.
