Finally I found one named Sydney Brioche Tortoise with tortoise shell frames which looked attractive. Solomon tightened it for me. The return policy is thirty days with a full refund. This store is bright and all the offerings are nicely displayed.

Easily, the best eyeglass/sunglasses store I've ever shopped in. I can never get enough classically-designed, prescription-shades. But in my 12 years of being a customer to Reuben, Jay and Rick's good graces, I"ve never been treated rudely (or even had a salesperson attempt to talk me into buying anything I didn't already spot). Furthermore, I have been assisted above-and-beyond what's expected every single time I've been in a hurry and needed an immediate-adjustment to a temporarily-misshapen or popped-out lens frame. They also give me unvarnished-feedback about how something fits on my bumpy probiscus or whether or not I should lighten the tinting ten-percent. When my dog was alive, they even extended that courtesy to him (graciously allowing him to say hi to the folks in the back or simply to sit on the cool floor waiting). All of the staff at Pildes are helpful (even the people I don't know well, who nevertheless let me in after the doors were locked a few weeks ago). They always have cool but unobtrusive frames and anytime the glare-coating isn't perfect or the most-minor problem, they courteously put the customer first. Three times I've had glasses delivered to my apartment and countless times have I been the beneficiary of a "gratis" fixing of some problem that they sent away and turned around in under-a-week for no-charge. I'm a short little guy with hippie hair and no sense of style, but I never get the upturned-nose, "situational ethics" passive-agressive treatment from any of the friendly Pildes staff (who keep good hours too). So, since this is the only store in all of Manhattan that's worth the time I've just spent positively-reviewing them, I want to urge you to check out their wares anytime you're in the market for some new spec's. I'd even put Rick's football-knowledge to the test against any other eyeglass-clerk in the city (although, admittedly, the effort required to round up his entirely-theoretical competitors precludes such an experiment from ever transpiring). Oh, Jay and R. are quite culturally-and-sports-literate as well. read more

Pildes Optical is lovely. I am a new customer and went with my UFT optical voucher for the free comprehensive eye exam and one pair of covered eye glasses. The office is bright and clean, with attractive displays. Dr. Hyde was pleasant, matter-of-fact and answered all of my questions. He also showed me a diagram to explain the difference between a cornea with astigmatism and one without. He checked the prescription in both of my old glasses, as well as if they were glare free (they were not). I found out that glare-free glasses are easier to see with if you have astigmatism. I wanted to have my pupils dilated but I forgot how sensitive my eyes would be to the light. So, the doctor gave me a pair of disposable sunglasses to put over my regular glasses to protect my eyes on the way home, which were really helpful. I still have them on as of this writing! Maria Arquer, who helped me shop for my glasses once the exam was over, was terrific. I generally tend to take a while before deciding, so I was worried about being rushed. Quite the contrary, Maria was patient and very generous with her time and attention. She got a quick read on what kind of styles I might be interested in and made several suggestions of pairs for me to try on. I liked the selection. Her feedback was honest and accurate. I knew I wanted more than the one pair of glasses covered by the voucher and that I would have to pay out of pocket for the rest but Maria was willing to work with me so that the additional costs didn´t strain my budget too much, which I really appreciated. I´m going to pick up my glasses in a few days and I can´t wait. I´m happy to have found this place and look forward to my next exam! read more

i had been experiencing deterioration of my vision but put off going to a doctor hoping my vision would clear. When the notice for my driver's license renewal came in the mail I decided not to put an eye exam off any longer. I didn't want to go to the same optical store that i had been to before so I searched online for a good eye doctor and optical shop on the west side. The reviews for Pildes were very positive. so I made an appointment and saw the doctor within a week of my phone call. The person who greeted me at Pildes was Maria. I immediately connected with her as she examined a pair of my mother's glasses I wanted to re-use. After my exam she helped me with choosing the type of lens and finishes I should get. She even gave me a discount when she found out I didn't have insurance! The doctor made me feel I could trust him: he administered tests and advised that I should consider cataract surgery in the near future. I felt he had a wonderful bedside manner given the severity of the pronouncement. My glasses were done in 2 days and everything seems so much brighter now! Maria helped to adjust the glasses for me. What I like about Pildes Optical is their very friendly and efficient service and the fact that they can customize Eyebobs readers, i.e., remove the reader lenses and replace them with a personal prescription. You're probably wondering why someone would bother buying readers and having the lenses replaced with a prescription. Well, it's all about taking just a few extra steps to get a high end look for a much more affordable price. Just go to Eyebobs.com (or to a Pildes store), check out Eyebob's selection of high end readers with frames that are smart, sophisticated, funky, wacky, artsy, glamorous, and eccentric and you'll see what I'm talking about. Pildes doesn't charge for removing the reader lenses. They just charge you the normal cost of preparing your prescription and any other extras you require. I get lots of compliments on my glasses and people are shocked when I tell them that I only paid about $79 for the frames. You can buy Eyebobs readers online and bring or mail them to Pildes to change the lenses or you can buy them and change lenses at the store. read more

Throughout my experiences of glasses/contacts searching, I've found Pildes Optical to be a particularly helpful place that works for your best interest. Not only are the staff exceptionally kind and welcoming, but they know what they're doing. I've been to the Lens Crafters nearby and sure they have their share of lenses, yet Pildes' staff are way more personal and experienced. The sales people offer very valuable and worth while packages. They happen to sell popular brand names, ranging from european style frames to japanese style frames: they have everything. Pildes' also doesn't require an appointment. You could walk right in and get your eyes examined on the spot, if not very easily schedule a simple appointment. I very much recommend this store. Wearing glasses since a little boy, I know not every lens store is the same. Pildes' is an exceptional store and if anybody were to ask me where to find great frames with great deals and great people, I would surely recommend Pildes Optical. read more

I've been here on a couple of occasions. I stopped by last year when I considered getting glasses and was ultimately put off by the service that I got glasses elsewhere. The salesperson was not listening to what I wanted and continuously pushed me to try on glasses I had no interest in. I considering giving them a try again since they are the only ones near that took weekend appointments. It was a poor choice and I should have learned from my first experience. The salespeople were not very inattentive and for my first appointment, they seemed very overwhelmed. I went back to pick up my lenses and there was no one around in the store except one salesperson. When another salesperson came by, she thoroughly ignored us even though at this point, there were two customers awkwardly waiting for one salesperson who was busy with another customer. Very unfortunate since this was a convenient place for me but I will have to keep searching for a new place. read more

I've been getting my eye glasses at Pildes on the UWS for a couple of decades. I have always been satisfied with their attention to detail, their great attentive service, fair pricing and willingness to make corrections or provide service after a purchase. The owner, Jay P. sets a high standard; he is a true professional who takes his work and the idea of providing excellent service seriously. Jay has always been available to answer questions, provide helpful repairs (e.g., tightening non prescription sun glasses I purchased somewhere else) or providing advice on changing prescription lenses. He also happens to have a great sense of style and, if you ask, will share his expertise. Incidentally, I'm a diabetic so my eyes are sensitive and my glasses need to be changed often. I can't say enough good things Pildes - especially Jean Roberty - who went (WAY) above and beyond. I took a new prescription to Pildes. But when I picked up my glasses ( 2 pairs) I couldn't wear them. My eyes hurt and I got a headache as soon as I'd put them on. I went back to Pildes almost in tears. Jean was so comforting - he first checked to see that they lenses had been properly made - which they had. He then told me that if I got another prescription from my doctor, Pildes would re-do the lenses at no extra charge. I told Jean I didn't feel right about them not charging me when they had done nothing wrong. My doctor had given me a prescription that was too strong. You Jean said we do this. I've known Jay, the owner of Upper West Optical, for more than 30 years, and there is no better shop in NYC for eye exams, frames, spot-on accurate eye prescriptions, contact lenses, and advice on all things optical! Year after year, Dr. Hyde (the other owner and the best optometrist in the universe- truly) improves my vision as my eyes worsen. How is that even possible??! They are kind, patient and precise. Recently one lens in a rimless frame cracked around a drill hole, probably from my mishandling. Jay tried with the manufacturer and with my insurance to get a replacement, and when they wouldn't budge, he offered to replace for a very small part of what new lenses would have cost. Honestly, the offer floored me. There was no catch, no commitment, and -- as I "saw" when I got the replacement -- absolutely no sacrifice in quality. Good as new! Also, Jay called to update me on the journey back from wherever the lenses were made. This is more than business. This is the relationship you want with people in your neighborhood. It's genuine. After dealing with a couple of terrible eyeglass stores, I am so glad I found Pildes. My salesperson was Marisol and she is the best, offering knowledgeable and friendly no-rush service. My prescription is tricky as I have macular degeneration and other vision issues. When the latest prescription from my doctor didn't work, Marisol replaced the lenses at no cost to me. Incredible. Jean helped my with my order and I was impressed by his expertise and willingness to give me the best deal for my budget. I totally get that eyeglasses are ridiculously expensive; kinda scammy, almost. However, the frame on the pair I recently got from Pildes broke within weeks of purchase. In short, the salesperson was like "Yeah, no problem, let's find another, more rugged pair for you." ...And that is awesome. No arguing, no hassle, just "Let's get you glasses that are going to work for you." (New frame obviously means new lenses as well.) No charge. ...And that is why my family goes to Pildes. read more

I wanted to replace the lenses on mine and they quoted me about $450 with insurance. At Costco, I had to pay $90 without insurance. If you've had lasik in the past and currently need contacts, the optometrist will have no idea what to do with you. She kept giving me soft contacts when they were clearly the wrong option for me. I had to read up on it myself. Lasik flattens the cornea and creates small irregularities in it, so soft contacts do not stay in the correct place and usually do not provide the correction you need. She could've done some research instead of asking me to go back to try on different soft contacts. The optometrist actually said I had to go to her again (!!) and try another type of soft contacts before she would give me a referral. I almost rolled my eyes. The poor girl was clueless, and I had better things to do with my time than to hang out at Optyx. I don't know what the rule is for optometrists, but physicians have to prescribe what's best for you, not what's more or less OK.

They have a service where they do eye drops to open your pupils for a health portion of the exam , she clearly explained that it might cause some blurred vision in the short time following the exam. I had a broadway show after so i declined but will come back alcor my next exam and do it. Very nice selection of glasses in store - higher end type imo Took my insurance and the front of house staff was amazing as well. Will def come back!

That they had a record of and noted on lenses order! Now, another week delay for them to make lenses all over again. At these prices, I expect much better QC and customer service. After I come again to pick them up, again, I will be a FORMER Optyx customer, especially with multiple competitors closer to my home and work. Very Sad and Disappointing! Substantial time and money ($450) lost trying to resolve repeated problem of inferior goods and services.

He also asked me to read the board out loud with the lights still on and the lens he was switching around with barely made any difference and despite me telling him I couldn't read it, he asked me to guess and say that it was "good enough." He was later saying that the measurements he got for my eyes were lower than my currently prescriptions. Well...because I could barely read the board and I kept telling you as such but no adjustments were actually made. Had to hand him my current contact lens as reference while he was writing down the supposed new prescriptions and he couldn't even tell that these were dailies, and not monthlies. Still got charged the full copay and contact lens fitting, even though I was barely checked for actual health of my eyes or possible changes in prescriptions.
