I'm giving this place 5 stars for a couple of reasons. The store is immaculate, I don't think you can find anything out of place. The staff is extremely helpful and just very friendly. They take the time to explain things to you and they don't push you into buying something. They care about their clients and overall they do great work. The doctor was good, the staff are irresponsible, the store is a jungle with no discipline for greeting the customers, and they are horrible with their online appointments. My biggest complaint is with their coverage of DavisVision frames and their handling of it though. First things first, I had to call them 20 hours after my online appointment inquiry to get an appointment, at which point, I had to supply them with my info again. They hadn't even seen my request. But then they saw it when I called, and they saw that I had asked them if they had the full collection of DavisVision frames. I had asked because my plan basically only covers those (According to DavisVision they must have, so I shouldn't have had to even ask). They didn't respond to that comment, and guess what, I realized after my exam that they only have three of the premium frames out of at least 30 that I had seen. If I'm a realist, they just lured me in to do my exam there, but if I'm an optimist, this store is a total mess. DON'T GO HERE at least if you have DAVIS VISION. Did the staff take any responsibility? Hell no! The reaction was that I'm not the person that took your appointment. Did they offer that they will reorder all the frames (like they are supposed to), NO! They just offered to order one frame if I want. Did they refer me to a manager? NO! Keep your sorrows to yourselves. You've wasted my time today, and I'm angry at both you and DavisVision for having you in their network. read more

I have LA Eyeworks eye glasses from 1994 and the manufacturer told me to find a reseller on the list to get them fixed. I selected Pildes not knowing what to expect. While they forewarned me they weren't responsible if something went wrong with the frames they'd make efforts to fix them and place my new prescription in them. What a home run, I could not be happier with the results! I smile every moment I put them on and every time someone asked where I got them. My 24 year old frames are new again and I could not be happier about it, thanks Gene. I'll be seeing you soon for another throwback pair I hope you can revive. I went here for my first pair of glasses ever, and I went solely based on what I read about them. Needless to say, I had very high expectations! They exceeded them in areas of cleanliness, store hours, the speedy service I received without an appointment (less than 10min. to get my eye exam), and the enormous amount of help I was given in choosing my frames. I spared no expense since this was my first pair, and I'm always working with people. The guy showing me all of the frames didn't try to "sell" me or show me the most expensive ones. He was honest about how I looked in all of them. Eventually I settled on a pair that cost $350, and he gave me $80 off without me even asking! Nice, right?! I went in on a weekend, and they said they'd be ready by the following Tuesday, but I was so excited I called and asked if they could be ready by Monday afternoon, and they said "no problem". After looking throughout Manhattan - on the UWS, SoHo, the LES, and midtown west (at 28 stores!), the moment I walked into Pildes I knew I was in good hands. I first went to Pildes Opticians when I was a second grader who could not see the blackboard. I am now 62 years old and live in California. I could not get anyone out here to tint my photochromic glasses, but while I was visiting my cousin, just happened to see the shop on Broadway. Their answer to my dilemma: "no problem" and they were shipped to me within ten days. As a physician, my eyes are one of my most important assets, and Pildes treats them as such. read more

I have spent thousands of dollars at Pildes but am changing eye doctor/store for my glasses and contacts hereon out. Staff have been nice but too many administrative/clerical errors that have made me lose confidence in them and a desire to spend my money there, like not actually making me an appointment that I booked while standing with the person, not storing insurance info in my profile so we don't have to look it up every single time, etc. I can't imagine others haven't experienced similar challenges and I hope they get this sorted sooner than later and so they don't keep losing good clients like me. read more

Having watched a documentary about how Luxottica owns my eye insurance company as well as lens crafters and all the eyeglass brands they carry, I realized it was time to be a true New Yorker and look for new frames and a local shop. My pursuit focused on pricing of the Lindberg brand as my research showed them to be some of the best. To my surprise, there are very few shops that carry these, and those that do have them priced quite high. My search came to an end when I called Pildes Optical and Jay provided the pricing - which is the best in the city. He was open, honest, and very informative about the frames as well as their pricing, this is what brought me to the store. Upon arriving, Jay spent as much time as I needed to get comfortable with the right style of frames, fit, and size. He then proceeded to walk me through the different types of lenses. While this is something optician should and will do, Jay's time spent with showed me that he was dedicated to me as a customer - even though I wasn't one yet, and not just some employee trying to sell but rather a VERY informed, educated, and experienced optician that loves what he does as much as he loves his clients. I can be quite indecisive about things, this didn't phase Jay one bit. No offense to the other employees at this shop, but the time Jay has spent with me each time I come to the shop has been stellar and he is the only person I work with. If I need an adjustment, he takes care of it immediately, if I need a new nose pad, it's taken care of. From the first time I walked in the door of Pildes, Jay built a trusted, open, and honest business relationship with me - which is something I never got from any other optical shop in the city. As a result, I am now a dedicated customer and can't say enough about how wonderful my experience was - never any pressure, never any issue, never any complaints. In my 12 years of living in the city I can't believe it took me this long to find Pildes Optical and Jay, but I am happy I did as I won't deal with any other shop from here on out. Many thanks to Jay and the employees at Pildes Optical for not only providing the best service, but doing it in a way that clearly displays the value in doing business with them. + After reading the other posting here, I had no idea that Jay is one of the owners of this shop. This is important because he provides the same best service everyone else there does and doesn't present himself as someone superior to anyone else in the shop. More importantly, he takes an active role in the shop, answering the phone, helping customers, and providing the best service I have ever had in the city. + Also wanted to point out that Jay responds to EVERY single review where a customer had an issue and explains the situation or how it was resolved - this is the sign of someone that really cares about their customer and their business. If you have a bad experience for some reason (no one and nothing is ever perfect) then it is your responsibility to provide the appropriate, honest feedback and give them a chance to fix it, before posting something here (my opinion). It disappoints me to read some of these negative reviews - Like complaining because the shop wont be responsible for taking possession of glasses to send to the lab to have new lenses put in when the shop doesn't even carry the glasses? They have no way to replace the glasses if something happens to them, and I know for sure that if something happens to a pair of glasses you buy from them they will replace them. I know we are all busy in NYC and don't have time to wait for things, or get frustrated when things don't go the way we expect or demand them to go, or the experience might be different than that from other, larger shops, but I can tell you the whole reason I left Lens Crafters after years of going to them is the transient, uninformed staff they had working there as well as the process of getting you in and out as quickly as possible, building no trust or relationship with the client (needless to say the lack of inventory and time it would take to order certain frames). If you don't have the time or patience to work with someone on getting something as important as a pair of glasses, then lens crafters might be the best for you, because the employees at Pildes have the experience, time, and patience in making sure you get the best for what you need. As well all know, it takes two to make a thing go right. read more

The doctor at this site seemed to give a good examination, but the sales people in the front are total rip-off artists. I was getting two pairs of glasses. I was shown the most expensive frames in the shop and they were VERY expensive. I asked if they had any cheaper ones and the salesman brings out a small box with old frames in it, and says that's all they have. My total for the package was way over what I could afford and way over what I have paid at other places. I should have just walked out, but sad to say, I didn't. My advice would be to go to one of the bigger chains where the prices are more reasonable and the sales people are more willing to offer specials and work with you on lower-priced frames. read more

Out of all the damn over-priced places in the UWS, this place is an oasis. They don't have bored, or worse, over-the-top sales people, or clueless retail assistants with an eye doc in the back. Just normal, intelligent, even funny with personality, engaged professionals who will let you browse if that's what all you want to do. Or, will provide you info on your lenses, and will even do a search on the internet with you for some random frame you want that they don't have, if it's not in their many catalogs or wide displays. From basic frames approved by your eyecare insurance all the way to trendy or chic (for me it's Pro Denmark or Silhouette) frames, to Rudy Project sports frames for triathlon or what have you, they have a good selection to browse in person, and the eye expertise to answer your standard to exotic questions. Plus, at this Pildes I spent 50% less the amount I've spent with the other, apparently over-priced, UWS eye boutiques. For the SAME FRAMES, with the SAME INSURANCE BENEFITS (weird!). I've lived in the UWS for 20 years and I've seen them all. Discovered this Pildes last year, and I'm not going anywhere else, now. I've worked in Soho, Union Square, Upper East Side, and downtown. Still nowhere compares to the basic goodness of service, simplicity, and friendliness, as well as expertise, of this UWS Pildes. That their people are normal, nice and smart is the most important thing. I don't get why eye boutiques are often filled with weirdos. read more

Doctor seems to be giving good exam ( although I don't k ow how my eyes can improve .5 - and no I am not ur grandma !!!) But rop le who work there r a bit odd, for example the guy who was measuring something ( I assume the technician ) did not wipe the instrument before pressing it into face !!! And hey r kinda alof ... Also thy were supposed to call me when my lens was ready - never called , when I called myself , they could not hold the phone and check my record and they needed to hang up the phone , check my record and call me back !!! I called in several occasion and in general they always say " store is busy and we can't hold the phone "!! This too me is a bit odd even though they really called me right back but I was about to bird a flight and it was not convenient to hang up and wait for a call back for a simple questions. All in all, I think I will try this dr again and will give his office a chance but ... read more

We had excellent experiences at Pildes. They are helpful without being pushy. I bought a pair of progressives that I am very happy with and they switched out my old progressives for a pair of occupational lenses for computer use that I am also really happy with. My wife also bought her first pair of progressives there. She had trouble getting used to them. They adjusted them twice and now she is happy with them. Rubin helped us primarily. I recommend him highly. Very skilled and patient. Update to the review. They were spectacular fixing a problem not of their own making. Ten stars!! read more

I am happy I found a neighborhood eyeglass store and an optometrist who gives me the feeling a) he knows what he's doing and b) he isn't trying to rip me off. They have a pretty decent selection and the staff aside from the doctor is kind of hit-or-miss. They are all nice, but some seem to be more pushy than others. My only wish would be that the doctor be a bit more thorough in explaining the patient's eye conditions to them. I feel like I have to ask him a hundred questions because he's not very forthcoming with the information. Maybe he thinks we won't understand the details and science behind vision/lenses/measurements, but the ability to put it into layman's terms would really make me feel like I understand why I have the prescription I do. I always walk out confident the doctor knows his stuff, but I still kinda feel in the dark about why my vision is the way it is. read more

Terrible service. I give it a two because the first lady who helped me pick out glasses was amazing. She was nice and patient. If it wasn't for her, I'd give this place a 1 star. First of all, the doctor who's a guy was just plain rude the entire time of my appointment. Complaining that I couldn't hold my eye in front of the light. I wanted to tell him, let me shine a light in your eye and see how long you can stare at it. He tells me my eyes are inflamed and that I need prescribed eye drops for them. Also says, "they'll be ready, just go pick them up." I get to the Duane Reade and it was closed. Yeah, I know my fault. The next day I took the day off to go get my medicine and guess what. NOT EVEN ORDERED YET. Now let me tell you, it takes 40 minutes on a train to get to the Duane Reade so you can see that I hate traveling from home to get all the way over there and find out it's not even there ! Strike 2 Pildes Doctor for telling me they were ready. NEXT DAY, I come in again to pick it up after work and GUESS WHAT! The medicine is $200 with insurance! Why the hell are these eye drops $200 that makes no sense. Even the pharmacy tech at Duane Reade said I didn't even need them, that my eyes will heal themselves since they're only inflamed and not infected. Strike 3, the contacts Pildes gave me are the worst prescription ever. I can barely see through these contacts, I can probably see better if I didn't even have them on. Terrible doctors that have no idea how to give a proper prescription. I'm going to a different doctor. Oh and the lady who answers the phone gets on my nerves. I had to repeat and spell out my first and last name 3-4 times. Like lady come on. read more

I've been shopping at Pildes for years - the customer service, glasses/sun glasses selection and doctor on site make the experience super easy and enjoyable! I am always impressed with the high end glasses that they carry and with the honest feedback (and patience) that the employees have when I am trying to find a new pair. Pildes Optical has possibly the nicest people working for them. The gentleman who helped me pick out my frames was patient and helpful in finding the right fit for me. They have an array of different styles and frames to choose from. The owner of the store who was very personable made my experience pleasurable. Dr. Cohen who checked my vision was very descriptive in his evaluation and made me comfortable. I highly recommend others to go to Pildes to get their glasses. If you live on the UWS, and you're looking for an optometrist, this is your place. I can't speak to the front of store experience so much, because I only ever bought sunglasses here, but one can hardly complain about an optician that can give you a same day eye exam and won't complain about writing you a prescription, because you bought your eyewear elsewhere. Ask for Ruben--he's the nicest, most helpful guy I think I've ever met, and he actually walks to the store every day from Penn Station, which is an impressive achievement. I don't know what that has to do with selling glasses, but somehow it speaks to his character. Also, he gave me a 20% discount on my eye exam, because my insurance only covers glasses, so that probably makes me more than well disposed toward him and his business. read more

I bought a set of expensive glasses here. It turned out to be a very bad design which almost immediately began to collect unsightly grime between the lenses and the frame. I took them in to be cleaned, and the technician broke both sides. But they replaced the frames. The second time I brought them in, they told me the 1-year warranty was expired and the cleaning would be at my risk. I refused and bought a new pair of glasses fro another vendor. read more

I had an emergency situation where I need some contact lenses last minute to cover me while traveling abroad. American Airlines lost my luggage with all of my extra contacts. Given my prescription, there was no way that I could make it without some new pairs. I cold called Pildes and asked them about current availability for my specific contacts. They asked to have my prescription from CA faxed to them. They searched for a pair that would suit me, set it aside, and had it ready for me to pick up when I stopped by later in the day. No charge, only a smile. I am very thankful and so appreciative of their stellar customer service - it saved my trip! read more

nice staff but failed to mention over the phone that if you need to get your glasses repaired it will take hours or an entire day for them to be fixed. they said it would be free over the phone and then said it would cost $50 just to replace the wire in person. every other time i have needed my glasses repaired it was at most $20 and took 10 minutes. read more

I got glasses today at Pildes after having a dreadfully negative experience at Cohens Fashion Optical on 177 East 86th Street a few days ago. I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau and to my insurance. My complaint is being investigated.. On the other hand, Pildes was exemplary in terms of staff and service. Thanks especially Maria and Reuben. Whereas Cohen Fashion Optical tried to trick me by misstating my insurance benefits in order to make more money. Pildes was honest and straightforward and helpful in finding glasses within my budget since I have a retina problem in one of my eyes that is under treatment and I will have to change the prescription in a few months.
