Finally made it here after being teased on insta for weeks! It is every bit as amazing as the hype. First, you walk in and it smells like spicy goodness. The staff was bubbly and welcoming. We got two DIY bowls and the highlights were: The perfectly crusted salmon, greens that my grams would be proud of, yes the cauliflower is all it's cracked up to be, the jollof rice is perfection, and the sleeper that was unexpectedly the star, the black eyed peas! Worth mentioning: the honey jerk chicken, & candied bacon crumbles. Yes the parking sucks, big deal. We parked at the library since it's closed for renovations. There's a park down the street with shade and picnic tables that was the perfect place to picnic. The best surprise: three sizes of fully compostable bowls, lids, and side containers. A medium was perfect for me and a large was great for my friend. Love that we got to choose our portion size and price! From top to bottom, the vision of Urban Comfort Foods shines clearly through. Updating my review... While I appreciate having an authentic cultural food business in my city, I have to deduct a star. I've eaten here 5 times. Food quality is good, but today's portions were significantly smaller than before. For a 32 oz bowl and paying extra for salmon, I received more like a 16oz bowl of food (see photo comparisons). Not cool! I literally counted 5 brussel sprouts. I had half a scoop of greens and barely enough jollof rice to cover the bottom of the bowl. I watched the lady scoop up sides then pour half of them in my bowl and the other half back into the warmers. The young gentleman also skimped on the toppings. He added about teaspoon of roasted garlic, also barely noticeable on top of my food. He didn't say a word, didn't ask if I wanted extras, nothing. He moved so quickly that I barely caught him in time to ask for dressing on the side as he flipped the bottle upside down ready to pour. I had to ask for shito peppers and relish jam as well while he proceeded to place the lid on the bowl to be bagged up. Part of this was because the lady at the register (super friendly) had input my order and was providing me with the total, while I was trying to watch preparation of my bowl. I appreciate the efficiency. BUT!! I'd rather service to be slower and correctly done than rush and not have food to my liking. Had I not jumped to the register, I would've certainly asked about the significant decrease in food portions compared to my previous orders. It was a very long 2.5 hour drive from the IE to UCF Kitchen. WARNING: It may take that same amount of time or longer to read this very lengthy review. Yikes!‍ Sorry in advance. As other reviewers have mentioned, we also learned of this new soul food bowl concept on social media. We walked in and were greeted with hellos and smiles. The decor was cute and the place was clean. No tables for dining in, just a few small benches. The 2:30pm Tuesday wait was not long as we were the only ones there at the time. My son and I both chose the 24oz medium BYO bowl. You have the option of choosing from small, medium, or large bowls. My protein choice was blackened salmon, whereas my son chose honey jerk chicken. At first he was reluctant, thinking it might be too sweet with the addition of honey, but he was pleasantly surprised that it had a good balance of flavors and really enjoyed it. My bowl had the blackened salmon with a base of half/half jollof rice and herb rice. My toppings were bourbon sweet potatoes, braised collard greens, turmeric cauliflower, grilled okra, and kale avocado salad. Garnishes were fried garlic, fried shallots, and candied beef bacon. Dressing/sauce (I got on the side) was habanero crema and add'l sauces are $.50 each. I expected more flavor due to the glowing reviews. The blackened salmon was actually the most delicious salmon I have ever had. If I wasn't so far away I would be here on a daily basis just ordering a side of that salmon. The perfectly cooked crispy skin was the highlight. My disappointment began with my base of half/half jollof rice and herb rice. Neither left a lasting impression. I've had Nigerian jollof rice before and this was nowhere near that: no spice, no seasoning, no flavor. Same for the herb rice. Not sure what herbs were used, but it also needed some additional flavor or seasonings. Next time I'll get the kale avocado salad as my base since it did pack a lot of flavor. The braised greens had a lot of thick stalks/ribs in it. I understand that braised greens are not like traditional stewed greens, so they will naturally be a little tougher, but I would have preferred more of the fibrous stalk being removed prior to cooking. I also felt that they also lacked in seasoning. I think just a tad bit of salt would have awoken the flavor in many of the dishes. The turmeric cauliflower was cooked nicely, but it was also not very flavorful, just bland. A pinch of salt really helped with bringing out the flavor in the cauliflower and I was able to enjoy it more. I really loved the side of curry chickpeas I got. Wow! It was cooked nicely, the curry was creamy and well seasoned and the chickpeas were tender and soft. A MUST TRY are the housemade lemonades. I purchased 2 of each flavor; hibiscus, lavender, and rose. They are all so different and delicious you have to get one of each. There was one other flavor that I did not get, which was elderflower. After trying this restaurant, I have just a few of what I hope are constructive critiques/ideas for the owner below: The roasted potatoes were cut so large that it was difficult to eat cohesively with the rest of the bowl. Instead of halved, maybe diced or quartered would have been easier to eat and less dry. I noticed that many of the ones he left uneaten were overcooked and hard. The cardboard bowls are horrendous! The bottoms and sides of the bowls get soggy from the ingredients. The plastic lids don't stay on well and are hard to put back on once the bowls have softened. There are many other options for sustainable takeout containers that could be tried out. From my observation, I thought that there could have been a better flow of the assembly line if the two associates (A and B), who were building the bowls/taking orders, were consistently taking turns. For instance, what I observed was Associate (A) at the front of the line writing down the customer's order on the lid with a sharpie, and then proceed to build the bowl starting with the base, the protein and lastly the hot toppings. Meanwhile, Associate (B) is waiting by with nothing to do until Associate (A) hands her the bowl, so she can do her part by adding the cold toppings, dressings/sauces, and garnishes. As I watched Associate (A) fulfill my order of 2 bowls, the male customer behind me had to wait for her to pass the bowls along to Associate (B). Only then was Associate (A) free to return to the awaiting customer to take his order. It seems like the line would flow much faster if Associate (B) wasn't idly standing by without anything to do, but instead be available to tend to the next customer while Associate (A) is finishing up the first customer's order. My idea would allow each Associate (A, B) to be responsible for their own customer's order up until completion, lastly handing over their completed bowls to the cashier (C) and return to help the next customer. A little after this place opened, some influencers hyped this place up to where locals couldn't even really try it because the lines were out the door and the wait was just ridiculous. Now... that's good and bad because yes, it made us want to try this place even more. Those who have been going to this particular strip mall where it's at KNOW how crazy it can be and I don't just mean parking and traffic-wise. Miraculously, my wife and I were lucky enough to get really really good parking at the right place and right time! The 1st time, we couldn't really try it because of what I stated above with it being extremely viral & trendy during that time, but we were able to try the Boba spot next to it that has amazing Asian foods, sandwiches, etc. When we finally waited weeks after not being able to, we ended up enjoying the extremely welcoming customer service by the nice ladies inside working their hearts out. Yes, like others said.... it basically reminds you of a mom and pop owned version of a Caribbean meets African Chipotle with how you can pick and choose. It also reminds me of a Filipino and Chinese turo turo! Our food choices were two 32oz BYO Bowls. 1 consisted of Hot Jollof with Cajun BBQ beef, okra, yams, cauliflower, and cherry tomatoes. The 2nd bowl was a Blackened Salmon with Hot Jollof, with beans, greens and yams. Our drinks were a bottle of Jamaican Cream Soda and a juice pressed Elderflower Lemonade. Our whole order came up to around $60!!! For that price, I wish we were able to eat it right then and there in a comfortable seating area, but I understand that they just started and they're working towards more of that success; so more power and love to them! I've tasted African food from other places, as well as from family and friends. Compared to this place, of course, there's nothing like home cooking, but it's cool to have great alternatives to Chipotle and Cava thanks to Urban Comfort Foods Kitchen. You can customize your bowl or pick a signature bowl. I got the Diaspora delight but subbed out the Brussels sprouts for red beans. Everything was pretty good! Only critique is they are a little light on the toppings. They barely put any crispy garlic on top, they may as well have left it off. They also had run out of andouille bites and I subbed for chimichurri which costs $1 extra. To charge extra and then give half a teaspoon seemed a like bit of a stretch to me. Something to note is that it is takeout only and you could be waiting in line for a while. I went on a Sunday afternoon and waited about 20-30min before I got my food. Another thing is that some of their items are made to order so they may make your bowl and you have to wait for the other items. Overall the service was great and food was good. So Tay's Food Tour sent me, and everybody and their mama, because the day I went (1/14) was the day after he posted his viral video about Urban Comfort Foods Kitchen on his Instagram. Never in a million years did I think I'd stand in line for an hour and a half just to get a bowl, but here we are. I got lucky finding parking, but honestly, good luck to anyone else. It's in a tiny strip mall with a very tight parking lot. The owner, Janelle, came outside and personally thanked everyone for their patience, which was really appreciated. You could tell she and her staff were not prepared for the massive influx after the post--they were constantly cooking more food and even had to run out to buy more salmon. What I loved most was the vibe in line. Everyone was understanding, patient, and genuinely happy to support a Black-owned business. The energy was all love. The food was definitely worth the wait. I ordered two signature bowls: the Brown Stew Jackfruit Bowl and the Caribbean Jerk Bliss Bowl. By the time I got to the front, they had run out of some veggies like the braised collard greens and Brussels sprouts, so I had to substitute. The bowls were still good, but I would've loved to try them with all the intended ingredients to really experience how everything pairs together. This alone has made me a repeat customer, and I've already referred several people. Food: 4/5 BBQ Jerk Chicken: While the food was absolutely delicious, the BBQ jerk chicken was way too spicy for my family. If you love heat, you'll probably love it--but we couldn't finish it. Just tried this new eatery and I'm so glad I did! I ordered the garlic shrimp harvest bowl and wow--so flavorful, fresh, and perfectly balanced. I also realized that the increased engagement had been a lot but it seemed as though the individuals were very new and confusing items along with the small portions. There was a bit of a wait for the salmon and due to the small space, it was a bit cramped trying to hear our orders and make room for others entering. HOWEVER, the staff is patient and didn't rush my many inquiries as I built my bowl. Each person in my party got the same treatment, which made it worthwhile to wait. As itmes where running out, they quickly replenished them with minor wait times. I will say, if you order shrimp or salmon it's 15 min additional since it's cooked to order. The customer service was great. Parking is extremely limited, and the wait can be long, especially in the heat. Offering complimentary water while customers wait would be a thoughtful touch. My base was jollof rice, and from the very first bite I knew I was in for something special. The rice was perfectly cooked, rich, and deeply seasoned -- not just spicy, but layered with flavor the way jollof is supposed to be. You could taste the care, tradition, and balance of spices in every bite. I couldn't decide between the bbq chicken and honey jerk chicken, so I got both, and that turned out to be the best decision. Each chicken had its own distinct flavor profile, but both were incredibly juicy and seasoned all the way through -- not just on the surface. The spices were bold, warm, and complex without being overpowering, building beautifully with each bite. And then there were the red beans, the andouille sausage, and the cornbread croutons -- all absolutely phenomenal. The red beans were hearty and comforting, the andouille added that smoky, savory depth, and the cornbread croutons brought the perfect crunch with just the right touch of spice. Every element felt intentional and perfectly balanced. I'm not even sure what the sauce was called, but it deserves its own shout-out. It was a sweeter sauce, smooth, rich, and insanely good -- the kind of sauce that ties everything together and has you making sure every bite is coated. It was very, very, VERY good. This place is truly unmatched. You can feel the pride, care, and thought that goes into every dish. I was really excited to try Urban Comfort Kitchen for the first time. Although I don't live nearby, my partner and I made it a point to support a Black-owned business and were intentional about letting the staff know this was our first visit. We asked several questions about the process because we wanted to make sure we ordered correctly. Unfortunately, the young woman assisting us made the experience less enjoyable. She was extremely monotone, never answer our questions, and seemed to stick strictly to a script rather than engaging with us. She seemed more AI than human! We ordered the 32oz bowl, but the portion appeared closer to 20oz, and she never explained that additional items could be added for an extra charge. We stayed the course, understanding that customer service skills can sometimes be lacking with the newer generation. What truly turned the experience around was the young man (Ronald A.) at the register. He overheard our conversation, immediately apologized, and took the time to clearly explain the build-a-bowl process. He was polite, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. His effort completely changed our initial decision about not returning. Overall, the food was well-seasoned and flavorful, and now that we understand the process better, we're actually looking forward to coming back. I found out about this place either on TikTok or Instagram. My friend and I decided to give it a try. When I first arrived there at 3:10 PM the line was out the door. They would only let a couple of parties in at a time. An employee came out and asked everyone in line their name and what protein they were getting, because seafood was made to order. The parking is horrible. This place shares a small parking lot with a 7-Eleven and a five other establishments. Once someone pulls out of a parking spot, someone else pulls in immediately to take it. My friend (who arrived separate from me) had to circle around a few times in order to get a spot. They ran out of large bowls, to my dismay. That was announced right as I got to the front of the outdoor line. The employee said that she had to leave and get some more bowls. Unacceptable. They should be adequately prepared for each business day. After a little over an hour of waiting outside, my name was called, and my friend and I were able to go inside and start our order. The AC was broken, and a big fan was running inside. It was a little stuffy in there. My friend ordered the Jollof Heatwave. I did a shrimp bowl and added my own toppings. The ordering process also took a long time. They said that they ran out of lemonade when I tried to order some. We had to settle for bottled drinks. After an hour and a half of us waiting in line, my friend finally got her food (4:26 PM). I had to wait even longer because I ordered shrimp, which is made to order--excuse me? After all that time, I thought that my shrimp would've been done since they took my name down for a shrimp while I was in line. What was the reason for that? The total came out to $48.64 for both bowls. At one point, a handful of people that were in line after me were getting their stuff before me. I had to go to the front three times and ask on the status of my order. I was told each time that my bowl would be right out. I noticed that some other people had to wait a long time for the protein for their orders too. Some people got out of line because they didn't feel like waiting to order. At 5:13 PM an employee announced that they only had small bowls available. At 5:21, larger bowls became available, not sure what size. I finally got my food at 5:26 PM. I should've done more research, but I thought that this place had customer seating so that they could eat their food in-house. They don't. I didn't have a car to sit in, so I had to sit in the waiting area, and place the bowl on my lap to eat. The food was delicious. I automatically liked it because I'm a fan of bowls. Rich in taste, the shrimp was fried to my surprise, and the jollof rice was a little spicy for me. I'm not into super-spicy foods, but I could tolerate the jollof. I feel as if other food establishments closer to me could achieve that same taste. I wouldn't travel all the way back to Carson, and wait for two hours again just to have more. I don't plan on returning. The wait was absolutely ridiculous--this is the worst wait at a restaurant that I've ever experienced in my life so far. It totally ruined the overall experience. I went through a lot to get to the restaurant - since I don't have a car, I took four buses and traveled 16 miles from home just to try the place out, and spend some time with my friend. I took off from work for this. I'm nowhere near being a rich woman and I could've potentially been somewhere making some money tonight. This place needs to put a better system in place for ordering and food prep because not everybody has time to wait around for their food. I was expecting it to be a quick assembly-line fast food experience like Cava or Chipotle. Maybe they should take notes from those establishments--it's basically the same concept. I don't understand what the big holdup was. My friend had prior commitments and had to leave with her food. We didn't even get to eat and spend time together as planned. I hadn't eaten anything (except something small in the morning) all day--I was planning on filling up on a large bowl. I probably just came here on a bad day, and during a peak time - a Friday afternoon. Based on a majority of the other yelp reviews, lots of other people have had good experiences here. Due to the long wait, it got dark out, and I had to pay for a $57 Uber back home because I don't take the bus when it's dark for safety reasons. I went here today and it did not disappoint! I felt a little bad for the staff because they weren't prepared for the huge influx of customers that came to check out the spot after seeing an Instagram post. There was a line out the door, and I waited almost an hour and a half for my food. Even with the rush, the staff couldn't have been nicer or more friendly, and they went out of their way to make sure everyone was taken care of as best they could. I have a feeling this place is going to be packed for a while, so I'd recommend getting there early. They also offer online ordering through Toast and DoorDash. Parking was a bit tricky since it's right next to Cal State Dominguez Hills. A lot of the surrounding streets don't allow parking, and the shared lot with other restaurants and a 7-Eleven was completely gridlocked due to the turnout. I ended up parking a few blocks away and walking. I ordered two build your own bowls--one "trying to be healthy" with salmon that turned into a nice, fresh salad vibe, and the other with jerk chicken that had all the carbs, honeyyyy! This restaurant is really good but it's just always really packed. They honestly need to move to a bigger location.

I really wanted to like this place. We went about an hour and a half before closing. We were able to find parking easily. The staff who helped us was nice. The bowls are kinda expensive when you see how much food you actually get. We got 3 24oz bowls for $54 but it seemed like no matter which size you got the food amount was the same. Also the food that was supposed to be hot was not hot, it didn't even look warm as they were dishing it out. The cauliflower was undercooked, the potatoes were hard like they had been sitting out and some pieces of the beef were tough. The flavor of the items were good but I don't think I would come back just due to the food not being hot. read more

incredibly sweet service when I stepped in there, the lady was so welcoming and knowledgeable, and was excited to share every thing with us. The food is amazing, (we realized halfway through eating they deserve a stellar review) there's very distinct flavors and everything and it all works well together the build your own bowl was $12 which is an amazing deal considering how much they pack in here. I had been following this place on social media and was happy to finally try it after all the social media reviews. My favorite thing was the Salmon it was cooked to perfection and did not have a fishy taste. The greens were also good. I also got a side of the beef and it had no flavor it tasted just as it looked like charred meat. The small side was also $9 extra. I don't mind paying for food as long as it compliments the cost. This was my first time going here and I would more than likely not return. I may have had my expectations too high. I got the 32oz bowl with jallof rice, salmon, cauliflower, red beans, greens, tomatoes, and pickled onions. The flavors don't complement each other. I really enjoyed this! The staff were courteous and patient. You can build your own bowl and there are so many good choices, it's hard to choose. The jollof rice is flavored well and mildly spicy. The greens and sweet potatoes are good and the jerk chicken was good. I would definitely go back. This is just for to-go orders. There's no dine-in. New and Upcoming with a lot of Potential. The owner greeted us on our way in the door and that was truly comforting. The inside was small but decorated nicely. Parking is going to be atrocious so be patient. The hype is valid, the food was great. I had a 16oz Jerk Chicken bowl with Jollof rice, yams, greens, and a few toppings. My friend got a BBQ chicken bowl with kale and curry. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful without being sweet and over seasoned. The customer service was okay, the long wait for certain items could be communicated better. But I think they're adjusting to the demand of the public which is not easy. Also, they need not to be shy, please add some more meat, I got less than half a cup after waiting for 15 min. I never got my plantains cause I couldn't keep waiting but I'll catch them at a better time. Overall, they're doing their best to provide quality food and service and I appreciate that. Food was amazing service is great all except the young lady that was starting the bowls with the bases... she was very rude and nasty attitude. So not welcoming. If it was for me driving 45 miles to come try this restaurant out for the first time, I would have walked out due to her and her attitude. But overall everyone else were very pleasant.
