Love their patio on a nice weather afternoon, the inside patio creates a nice breeze flow. Best thing we've had so far is the carnitas, very close flavor to the real thing. Tender pork meat, slow cooked with the right spices. Great rice and beans as well. Service has been ok, not great, not impressed with it to be honest. We were there for the Houston Restaurant Weeks today, and we enjoyed everything. We chose the watermelon salad, Camarones al Chipotle and we each got a dessert, I got Flan de Chocolate and my mom got Tres Leches de Coco. The Watermelon salad was refreshing with toasted pumpkin seeds, the vinaigrette was very tasty. Shrimp Chipotle was savory and spicy. The rice tasted like risotto and Mac and Cheese. Stopped by Sunday morning, right at opening (10am). We decided to sit at the bar. Restaurant is quite big and nicely decorated. Food: Started with a couple appetizers, Papas Bravas (highly recommend) and the Elote (do not recommend it was pretty bland). I ordered the Tacos Barbacoa, they were delicious. Meat was tender and great flavor. We also ordered a Mollete de Aguacate, which was a big portion and very good. Drink: We ordered the house margaritas, even though they are pretty small, they are very good. They are on the sweeter side, so if not your thing, maybe still clear of these. We were lucky and got in last minute with reservations. I loved the ambiance of this place! On the menu, there weren't too many choices but there were some good ones! We ordered three tlayudas and one barbacoa plate (if I remember correctly). The staff was very kind and friendly. I am used to the tlayudas of the the DF and this was much heavier. Typically they use queso fresco but this is "quesillo." From the pictures I didn't realize that it was converted in cheese underneath. If i had known, I would have asked to not add it. But it was my bad fir not paying attention. I asked about the corn ( i wanted white and not yellow corn side order) and from the pictures, it looks like white corn because it is covered white cheeses and mayonnaise. It was hard for the waiter to hear me so I was done with the confusing questions about the corn, i didn't question the tlayudas. One tlayuda is plenty for two people! There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available, so walking in without a reservation wasn't an issue. Service was a little on the slow side, as we waited a decent while between getting water and ordering our food. That being said, the food did come out pretty quickly. The Papas Bravas were good, but without the chipotle aioli (which was great), there wasn't a ton of flavor in the dish overall. The Elote Asado was a solid option, made even better by the fact that they were able to serve it off the cob. From the Platos Fuertes section, the Birria was pretty tasty. The only downside to the dish was there not being enough of the consomme to prevent the meat from getting a little dry. Other than that and there being no real heat, the flavors were on point and the meat was very tender. I'd definitely recommend sharing, as the Birria dish was easily large enough for two people. The vibe with the lighting and overall setup was nice, but based on the food and the variations in menus, it's probably best served for lunch or a happy hour stop before another dinner option. read more

Tried out one of the newest restaurants in Uptown Houston! URBE is a concept by award winning chef Hugo Ortega. The menu features food from all states of Mexico. The interior is bright, vibrant and colorful with beautiful artwork on the walls. Once you are seated, you order at the counter and food is brought to your table. There is even a selection of pan dulce behind the counter if you have a sweet tooth. Today I had the roasted mojito to drink, which garnered it's flavor from the roasted muddled fruit. It was a bold, yet balanced frozen drink that was refreshing with lunch. To eat I had the papas bravas which were seasoned exceptionally well with a crispy exterior texture and covered in guajillo pepper, chipotle aioli, crema, and queso fresco. Paired with that I had the queso flameado which was packed with flavor from the well seasoned charred brisket, to the chilaca pepper, mushrooms, and a very liberal amount of gooey melted chihuahua cheese. The house flour tortillas were served very warm on the side, with a habanero hot sauce. Flavors were outstanding, and the casual vibrant atmosphere make this an excellent choice for brunch or lunch! Went for brunch on a Sunday. Service is different...it's way busier you have to order at the counter and they bring you the food to your table number. Food was still delicious, they were super busy as any place is on a nice Sunday brunch weather in Houston but the woman who took my order at the counter needs an attitude adjustment. I was ordering four items for brunch, I wasn't butchering the pronunciation or anything and I wasn't speaking softly but she was annoyed with her "What?" And "Huh" additionally, she did not hand me back my credit card and when I came back for it I patiently waited behind the person she was assisting and she saw me and said said "one moment" and I said that's fine and then she rolled her eyes didn't go back to assist the other person and annoyingly said "what do you need?" I said my credit card and pointed at it and she immediately changed to an apologetic tone. I did not like my experience with this lady. read more

Upon arrival, I asked for a table for two. The restaurant was essentially empty. The hostess told me to give her a few minutes and she would assist me. She returned to the booth and told me she could sit me on the patio with heating because she didn't have anything inside. Again, the restaurant is empty. I declined and said she could sit me at a table but I had to be done by 6. (It was about 4:30) I thanked her for seating me and she blatantly ignored me and walked off. My server definitely redeemed my initial thought of the restaurant. She was very pleasant and attentive. When the drink I wanted wasn't available she was very apologetic. Another server came while I was waiting for my food and literally snatched the extra coasters off the table and walked off. The taquitos were really good! I got 2 orders. We went to dinner on New Year's Eve. The dinner service is with wait staff. Apparently, it's counter service earlier in the day. We got NYE hats. The place had to cancel its 8 p.m. NYE party due to a Covid surge. Urbe is spacious with lots of outdoor seating. I saw heating lamps which is good during this frigid weather. I had veggie enchiladas. They're filled with zucchinis. I wish they had more verde sauce on them. The dish comes with delicious refried black beans and just ok rice. I wanted an agua fresca. The waiter said they had watermelon. He brought strawberry agua instead which was fine with me. At $4, I find it overpriced as it's served on a thin glass. I had an $8 slice of chocolate cake. It's rich and delicious. While I like Urbe, I won't go that often. My total for a small enchilada dish, a piece of cake and an agua fresca was $30. And I called them to go for happy hour and they've suspended the happy hour food. They only have drink specials. Don't miss the Mexicráneos as I don't know how much longer the skulls will be there. read more

Typically I'm not a fan of counter service brunch, but the people at the counter were very nice and so was the manager. Urbe is a trendy Mexican restaurant that serves elevated street food. The service was slow and average at best, but the food made up for it. The food presentation was impressive and made the eating experience all that better. It wasn't as spicy as typical Mexican food, which is good or bad depending on who you ask. I could have used a little more spice; the food was good regardless. I recommend eating outside if the weather allows for it. First time trying URBE & I have to say, it exceeded my expectations. With any gentrified Hispanic restaurant I expect the place to look 5 stars and the food to be eh, but everything was delicious. My favorites were the "papas bravas" & the "elote asado" i do regret not trying the $32 appetizer they offered only because it had a little bit of everything. This 3.5/5 review spans two separate visits, one for lunch and one for dinner, and can be summarized as follows: cool atmosphere, solid drinks, inconsistent food, and stiff service. Chef Hugo's restaurant empire continues to expand, now encompassing this trendy Mexican street food-focused haunt in Uptown Park. I would recommend sitting outside if weather allows, as there are plenty of heaters arranged throughout the street-side patio and shaded archway area. The service has been puzzling. You would think at a place that celebrates humble street food, the waitstaff would be friendly and down-to-earth, but this hasn't been the case. For example, when we ordered the "queso," referencing the Queso Flameado, our waitress condescendingly responded, "We don't serve queso here; this is not a Tex-Mex restaurant". We of course know that. Our other interactions with waitstaff weren't so abrasive, just overly stuffy and business-like. I have enjoyed most of the drinks I've tried here, both alcoholic and not. The Memories of Maiz cocktail (mezcal, corn liqueur, vermouth, corn-infused bourbon, caramel corn) was a brilliant concept and tasted wonderful -- sweet, malty, and fruity, though more smoke please! But it was such a dinky pour (probably a shot or so) that it left me unsatisfied. My Prendido, a chilled cinammon- and cocoa-laced coffee brewed in a clay pot, was excellent. It did get quite gritty toward the bottom of the cup due to the powder/spices. Papas Bravas - the tubers themselves are well-cooked and crunchy, and the sauce + cotija cheese combo works really well. Wish there was more sauce. Queso Flameado - effectively brisket absolutely suffocated with melted cheese. The meat was excellent, but the cheese wasn't really salty or flavorful enough. The accompanying habanero sauce was bomb. Elote - a great side dish. Salty, creamy, and sweet. They'll split it for you if you ask! Esquite de Coliflor - one of the best items we tried. Effectively a whole head of roasted cauliflower that was uber (urbe?)-tender, stems and all. There was a ton of the chunky, earthy pipian sauce underneath, but I wish instead they had gone heavier on the creamy tea-infused aioli instead. Barbacoa - a major letdown, since I was most looking forward to this. The meat wasn't fatty or tender enough; in fact, it was rather chewy. The cactus and adobo sauce were great, but if the star of the plate isn't up to snuff, there is no recovering. Tacos al Pastor - one of my favorite Mexican bites, and these were a great take on the tradition. Sweet grilled pineapple, complex and well-seasoned pork, that lovely habanero salsa. Gotta love it. Tacos de Birria - oof, these were weak. The texture of the tacos was between soft and crunchy, kind of like styrofoam. The order comes with three, but they are all rather small and barely come with any stuffing. The meat and cheese inside were both bland. Even the consommé was watery and flat (I drank it to confirm). Would avoid. Camote - an interesting flavor profile that is sweet, sour, and nutty, but at the end of the day you are paying $7 for a sweet potato topped with sour cream and toasted pumpkin seeds. Huarache and Brisket Enchiladas - only tried a bite of these, but the carnitas in the former were juicy and the salsa verde was tangy and fresh. The brisket in the latter was great as well - delightfully smoky. Like I said, a little up and down. When Urbe hits the target, you're in for a treat. When it misses, well, better luck next time. It's a unique enough spot to keep me coming back, but I'm not quite ready to crown it as one of the best casual Mexican spots in town. read more

All the food items we tired were also great, with the highlights being the queso with brisket, arrachera and the chocolate cake. Our group arrived on a Sunday morning sans reservations. Although there were plenty of empty tables it seemed this was a problem. We were seated quickly and the waiter stopped by to take drink orders which we received within 15 min. Fortunately we ordered appetizers that came out relatively quickly. Then the wait began. Another 35 min passed before the waiter returned to take our food order. During that time we asked passing wait staff for assistance and even spoke with our waiter who said he'd be back. We finally placed our order and we're pleased with the food. Overall ok. Another great concept by Chef Hugo. Love the vibe of the place, open area, lots of light and seating. They have both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The staff was very nice and welcoming. Hubby and I ordered the tacos de birria and the pecho de res con huevos for brunch on a Saturday morning (counter service only on the weekend). Everything came out quickly and it was delicious.
