    Lent Fish Fry
    Steven B.

It was Good Friday, it was past lunchtime and I was hungry. As I cruised down Big Bend, I remembered this VFW Post got great raves in a talk thread about being good. As I drove by, I noticed they started at Noon, so I made a quick right turn into their lot. As I entered their banquet hall I could see they were set up cafeteria style. A young lady greeted me and said she'd take my order over at the table she was standing at. They offered both, Cod and Catfish with the typical fish fry sides. When Catfish is available, that is my go to. I also cannot resist fries and Hush Puppies with my order of fried fish. If you're going "fried", you might as well go all the way. My order was packaged to go, but I asked if I could go have a beer in the bar and eat my food. They assured me I could and informed me, that they were open to the public and I could come anytime I wanted. They were proud to say, they were like a dive bar with good cheap drinks. When I went into the bar, I was impressed with the number of local craft beers they had on tap. I went with a 4 Hands - Single Speed and the bartender informed me since I was eating, I'd get it for only $4. The ladies informed me to that they may be doing a fish fry once a month, so to keep alert for the announcement. I'm going to pay attention to any type of food event they have - I had a good time and experience. I'll be back? - Yeah, my catfish was good and they were very welcoming. When: April 19, 2019 Why: Good Friday Fish Fry

The Post has recently renovated and they are now able to serve food! On Tues they have Taco Tuesday where they barbecue pork, chicken, and fish and have fresh made guac, cabbage slaw, and other toppings. As of last visit (Nov 10, 2020), the tacos were also super affordable at $2 a piece! They also have quesadillas and Mexican style corn. You can order your meal with corn tortillas for gluten free experience (fish tacos are not GF, but the rest can be). On Fridays during Lent, they host a fish fry. They are also working to add other meals on Thurs. so far they have had a Polish style kielbasa and potatoes, a meatloaf, and beef stew on different weeks. As always, there is the bar. With the renovations, the interior no longer smells like cigarettes. They moved smokers to an covered outdoor space. The beer is well priced and surprisingly good selection with your standard AB products alongside some local craft brews-- UCBC and 4 Hands were on tap on our last visit. When the weather is nice, they do have a tables and chairs outdoors and socially distanced. Inside, they have limited seating. For food service, we have been able to sit at the tables in the hall and be socially distanced.

A casual vibe, great place for beer and a group happy hour…read more Every time I come here I am amazed at how much fun it is and what a great draft selection they have. Walk in and there are plenty of tables, a couple of gathering areas, standing room narrow tables, an outdoor area, and a room off to the side. I went for the Logboat Dark Matter which I have had before in a can and wanted to try on draft. I enjoyed it very much. You know what is great?! Since they don't have food, you can bring it in yourself. Both times our group has met up here Katie's Pizza is the choice and its in the same parking lot. You can't go wrong with Katie's. Bartender is on the ball and friendly, TV's all around, not too loud so you can talk. Wednesday nights they have Trivia and I stayed for the first round, it was very current for the current event category. Get a pizza from Katie's, go here, have a beer, have fun!

Bartender was friendly and offered to keep a tab. Lots of parking. Loved this place!

Lively atmosphere, bartenders were welcoming and interactive. We ordered the Hot Cheese curds as an appetizer, and I got the Obscura as me beer of choice. Not going to lie, the cheese curds were as advertised! They were hot! Not so much that I couldn't handle but don't take them lightly, they are good. They came drizzled with a good ranch. The beer was great, especially with the hot cheese curds. Ordered the Friday Fish Sando with no cheese. Came out in a timely manner, large and crispy! It was messy in the best way. Crispy, beer battered cod, lettuce, and house made tarter. It was juicy on the inside with none of the batter mush you can sometimes get with fried fish, loved the house made tarter, all-around great sandwich. The fries were on point, too. Crispy but not greasy. Great space, friendly staff, good food!

There was a small wait for the food but it was worth it! We will be back soon

We were seated with our wonderful server, Nina (I believe). She was friendly, chatty, and very knowledgeable about the menu and restaurant itself. My dad and I started with drinks off the cocktail menu...I got a spicy marg (I don't remember the exact name), and he got a traditional margarita. My spicy marg was fabulous! It had a little heat, but it wasn't overwhelming. My dad unfortunately had a mix-up with his drink, but once we let Nina know, she happily made him the right one. It was also delicious! For food, we had the chicken wings, which were incredible!!!! They're crispy, spicy, delicious, and they will absolutely be devoured again someday soon. We also had a house side salad and split the hot dog. The hot dog deserves an entire post of its own. Holy smokes. It is crunchy, smoky, juicy, sweet, deliciousness....if you are a hot dog fan, you HAVE to try this. I will absolutely be back to try their french onion soup and grilled cheese on a cooler day. That's a threat and a promise.

I was honestly surprised at how busy it was when we arrived at 4pm on a Thursday. I wasn't expecting that kind of crowd, but thankfully I had made a reservation, so we were able to get seated right away. As much as I would've loved to sit on the patio, it didn't look like anything was available, although if you can snag a patio table, I'd definitely recommend it. Inside was packed, with quite a few larger groups as well. Our table was right in the middle of the restaurant, so we had a good view of everything going on. It was loud, but in a fun, lively way. Our server was really friendly and quick. She checked in on us often and gave some helpful recommendations. We ordered drinks and a couple of apps to share, and she left us a full bottle of cold water, which was such a nice touch. We got the pretzel monkey bread, french fries (the best) and the artichoke bean dip. We weren't planning to stay for dinner, just wanted some snacks. The food came out fast and honestly looked too good to wait on. I loved the monkey bread, the pretzel bites had a great crisp to them, and the sauces they served with it were really good. The bean dip was good too, just not as much my thing since I'm not a big fan of dill, so I left most of that for everyone else. Once we wrapped up, we were able to split the check and head out pretty quickly. I really appreciate places that still make it easy to split checks, and even more when you can just pay right at the table with those handheld POS devices.

British Bar INSIDE a "British designed hotel", so I had my hopes probably heightened more that it should have with my previous British bar results. I went in thinking British craziness and got a "Edgar Allen Poe" feel... But I'm going to say this was NOT what I was expecting. First and foremost, your eyes are going to need adjusting. Plain and simple, it felt more like a dark ... room? (Part of the problem I think is that as it was already June, you can forget using the fireplace to lighten the room up) so it felt.. "Small", and I"m going to feel weird saying this... "Romantic Horrorfest". Wait, before you go "wha??", this isnt' necessarily a bad thing. The Taxidermy , the photos on the wall. the fireplace. the VERY (and I mean VERY) dim lighting... The limited seating on the main floor, the one door in and out it had a "wooden cabin feel".. Yes, if you had a wonderful romantic film and it was suddenly invaded by some monster villain... This where it would take place and it would be perfect. (See I can find positive things to say about things i wasn't looking for) As for the service, apparently (going back to the Romantic filmfest), I was struggling to get any attention for the bartendress, cause I guess I was solo'ing by myself, and because of how I wasn't able to get the bartendress attention... I kinda felt like an unwanted customer in a place more for couples or friends getting together which had me leaving shortly thereafter, so no real food score (although I will say, much like Oh London ,the menu wasn't really much to work through...), Anyway, no TV's, no world cup game on the air.. just like I said a vibe of a cabin in a "romantic movie, where the monsters lurk". And Apologies for some of the iffy pictures, it just didn't feel right using a flash on the camera in such a secluded locale) and like I said, it wasnt' what I was expecting (rowdy British fans watching the local club or something), but there's something about it that even i have to admit, would make this location a nice "date night" or "out with friends' location, more so than just a single person looking for a nightcap. (And Maybe there really is a monster hiding in the fireplace, to keep the "Horror" feel going?? :)

Arrived around 7:30 on a Friday night and the next available reservation wasn't until 10:30/10:45. There are about 5-6 dart stations throughout the restaurant that accommodate different group sizes. The seating was open so after roaming a bit cozied into a booth behind the bar where a tv was near by to watch the basketball game. From entrance to exit, everyone was friendly and warm. From my vantage point I observed all of the employees working together to make sure drinks were served quickly, food orders came out hot and guests' needs were met. The cocktail and mocktail was delicious, the lobster elote with seasoned tortillas was very flavorful and entrees did not disappoint. With this private booth, we had a selection of appetizers, a dessert tower, and unlimited booze. Of the appetizers, the buffalo chicken sliders were my favorite and the desserts (cannoli, cream puffs, double-chocolate cookies to name a few) were surprisingly good!
