This is a cool dive bar! Super retro with a lot of history. Too bad the Food service closed after Covid.... I live close by and would love to see this place grow again! Especially with the 49er stadium being close by I can see this place being a really cool spot if only the owners would put a little work back into it. Husband saw Vahl's from the train and wanted to try it. Up for something new we headed down from Dublin. Vahl's has been around for years. The decor appears to be original. Though they have several TVs in the bar showing sports. It looks like they have a bunch of regulars. The staff was friendly. They only had a lunch menu available so we missed some items. Apparently they have steaks and chicken cordon blue. Would have like the larger selection. Our food was served quickly. Dinner included garlic bread and a side salad or soup. The salad was crisp and fresh, iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. The ravioli dinner had 8 round ravioli in a red sauce. The liver and onion included a scoop of mashed potatoes and veggies. The liver was tender and the onions were grilled well. I can see the attraction Vahl's is as a neighborhood restruant. read more

This is probably the best restaurant in Alviso. I wish I got to experience it before Covid hit and I hope someday I can. They have a reduced menu but the ham sandwich I got was definitely better than expected. I went with my friend and Pet Morrigan. Everybody loved Morrigan, even the stray cats in the area and I didn't meet one grumpy, ill polite soul. Vahl's restaurant - retro in Alviso Old timers know and love Vahl's in Alviso, a san jose neighborhood next to Santa Clara. Once this was the place to celebrate prom nights, birthdays, and holidays. Though mrs Vahl passed at 99 in 2004, her spirit remains alive and well in the restaurant that hasn't changed over the years. Red check tablecloths, artwork from local artist, a wall sized European tapestry of parrots on one wall, and so one. They have excellent karaoke on the weekends, as well as one evening a week, usually with a keyboardist playing accompaniment. Put on your pillbox hat, your retro clothes, and come for casual, not crowded or noisy atmosphere and homey comfort food. If you want a nice place to go after church. Or an early dinner...they close at 8pm. Have a retro party or a laid back meal. Chat with Elba the gracious host waitress who had worked there since she was a girl. She tells wonderful stories about Mrs Vahl. Reasonable prices. 3 of us went for a meal, drinks. Appetizers, and dessert. $100! In summer I recommend the shrimp louis salad. Three of us went to Vahl's to check it out 6/29/06. It's been in business since 1941 so it has a long history in the town of Alviso. It wasn't very busy when we went around 12:15pm for lunch. You get free bread w/ butter after we ordered. Then soup of the day which was french onion. I thought it was ok, not too salty. A slice of bread was in the soup, but I didn't eat it. Main dishes not too long a wait. Lunch special seem to change daily and what's on the menu is not what is available that day. I wanted baked lasagna or linguine w/ clam sauce, but both not available. I picked the meatloaf lunch special $10. My dish was pretty tasty. A small slab of meatloaf w/ gravy on top, small scoop of mashed potatoes (instant), and a scoop of zucchini-which was pretty good. I finished everything. Dessert included w/ lunch special. I picked the sherbet which was pretty light and refreshing. Credit Cards taken now. Ladies room had two stalls and was decent. Two sinks too. Would recommend if in the area and wanted old fashion American food. read more

If you read all the reviews about this place, you will find that they all say the exact same thing. But depending on the kind of person you are, it will either be a 1-star or a 5-star. For me, a 5-star. That being said, let me just tell you about myself instead. I think would be a more efficient way to decide whether or not to come here. First of a I am a weirdo and I like weird things. This place is weird. It is like a one of a kind place in this day and age. I am pretty sure the place has not changed a bit since it opened in 1941. I am a big foody, and I can tell you right now that I did not come here for the taste or presentation. Its mostly the service-experience that you get is what is interesting. You get a bunch of Hors 'd orderves like olives, salami, pasta, garlic bread. And they serve Pate, which is kinda rare and awesome in these parts. (Although it is not fantastic tasting, it is definitely homemade and worth a try). I am also fond of the 5 course meal, which is almost what you get when you come here. The decor and ambiance is amazing. Its actually kinda creepy feeling and almost too quite in the dining room. But I am really okay with that kind of stuff because it has a more homey feel to it than the "ultra-lounge" atmosphere is running rampant in downtown SJ. The wild wallpaper and the old china really makes it complete. The service from the waitress wasn't exquisite or anything, but when you are the only patrons in the place, it does seem like a first class meal. So the menu has a certain French style to it; Rabbit, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken Liver, Filet Mignon, Chateubriand (Giant Filet Mignon for two). The food is not real authentic or anything, but its nice if you want change from all those burritos or Subway you have been having. Anyways, let me talk about the Bar. I think this is the only reason why this place is still open. There are always a hand-full of locals in here, which accounts for about 75% of the Alviso population. The Karaoke is every 1st and 3rd thursday of every month and its amazing. They have almost every song that you can possibly think of. Forget the catelogue, you just have to talk to the DJ and he can look up any song that you want. (I saw some old local lady's sing some Bjork song, wow!) The greatest part is everybody is just loves to sing, but they dont take it too seriously and they dont give a crap if you suck. (Which is probably why from now on I am going to go there twice a month) So in summary, You will either love this place or hate it. But I think its worth a shot. read more

Yes this place definitely has some history to it. Anything that's older than my parents has longevity for a reason. Be it nostalgia, the steadfastness of not changing, or the suitability of its clientele. I dig the fact that something mostly untouched by time exists. However the food isn't as much of a draw as I'd hope. Perhaps a vibrant nighttime bar scene? Maybe, but I'm looking at this from a lunch point of view. The place was mostly empty and our waitress was pretty good. I unfortunately did not score the meatloaf and had to settle with the lasagna with a cup of split pea soup and an old fashioned dinner roll. Felt like something you'd get at a friends house (maybe that's the point). I can't say Im compelled to return, unless I find out that meatloaf is heavenly but I do understand the the nature of why this would be a draw to some. 3.5 stars. read more

Yelp is my "go to" when I want to try something new and with your help, we made our way here. Arrived for Sunday lunch and we were the only ones here so therefore, seating were plenty and our server gave us our undivided attention. Their service were very pleasant and food was not bad. OMG if you love kitch you have to come here. It's a throwback to... Well, a long time ago. There's karaoke starting around 5 or so and its a hoot with a very regular crowd of over 70 or so. The decor is fascinating. The whole dining room is pepto bismol pink with gingham vinyl tablecloths. Awesome. Have a drink in the bar and have fun. The menu is truly expensive for what you get. Pan fried steak with blanched zucchini and a tiny baked potato for $27?? The fried shrimp is actually coconut shrimp and imagine what that tastes like with cocktail sauce on it, just imagine. Ratings for Sunday dinner. The lunch diners seem much happier than we were. When we split the check, it came to $42 per person and almost nobody thought it was better than "okay food". Great-Grandma (age 91) liked it fine, but mostly because she was eating the fries from one of the kids' plates. We were plainly astonished by the paucity of the menu. We kept looking for the rest of it - seriously, our options started at $18? For fried chicken? Up to $75 for surf-n-turf? Are they serious? Apparently they were. The dinners do include a lot. First iceberg-and-carrot salad, then chicken-liver pate, pickles and salami, slices of beef tongue (see photo!), then soup with heavily buttered toasted bread. A million years later the food arrived. It ranged from "nothing special" to "ummm" - which is what the family says when they can't think of anything nice to say. The veggies were greasy and included baked celery, which really grossed out one great-auntie. The "potato side" was a scoop of something potato-containing, reminiscent of a school cafeteria. The birthday honoree, 86, plainly would have preferred her usual Olive Garden, but was careful not to say so. We were a party of 12, and there was another group of at least 20 nearby. The waitstaff is clearly used to large groups and handled us very well. It's not their fault they're serving such unpleasant high-priced food. read more

This place is in Alviso -- a/k/a the Happiest Place on Earth. ALVISO!!! Have you been there? Have you even heard of it?? Alviso is the town that time forgot. Mouldering in the geographic crotch of the SF Bay, just north of San Jose, and bathed by a gentle sea breeze tinged with the stench of the nearby Milpitas dump, this old fishing town is now little more than a collection of rusted-out trawlers, weathered clapboard houses and fabulously decrepit abandoned canneries... all sort of rotting away in the marshland. FABULOUS! Vahl's is a relic from the days when Alviso was actually a functioning town -- an old-as-fuck, creepily old-timey comfort-food joint with a real mausoleum-meets-grandma's-house vibe. Going in here is like going back in time, to an era when everyone was white, ate whitebread, and drove Buicks. I went here for early dinner on a Sunday afternoon, right in the middle of some kinda awesome Greatest Generation Karaoke thing. Imagine a roomful of old (75+) white people, taking turns warbling Perry Como standards to the accompaniment of a keyboard player -- AMAZING!! Food-wise, it's just typical gross diner-type American food from the pre-foodie era: burgers, weird white-bread/gravy sandwiches, icebergy salads, etc. I had an omelette and fries (they were out of breakfast potatoes). It was OK, but you definitely wouldn't come here for the food. But you SHOULD come for the awesome ambiance! If you get sick of the corporate bullshit down the road in San Jose, head to Alviso for a refreshing lunch hour in the reeds, among the seagulls, meth-heads and old people. Tucked away in a sleepy town in the Heart of Silicon Valley, is Vahl's Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge. Much like Alviso, Vahl's appears just as incongruous among the high tech skyscrapers that loom nearby, as the Alviso Slough and Wildlife Refuge look juxtaposed against the bustling highways. Yet it's that lack of warp-speed/information overload, that make Alviso and Vahl's so special. My friends and I moseyed over to Vahl's for Sunday Karaoke (mosey being the standard speed in Alviso). My friends got there before I did, so I can't comment on the karaoke, but they really enjoyed it. I think the karaoke runs from 3:00-6:00 every Sunday evening, but I would call ahead to make sure. By the time I arrived, the bar wasn't at all busy. It was my three friends, two regulars, two girls, and one bartender: Frank. But you really don't need a crowd when you have good friends, a jukebox, stiff drinks and Frank, who happens to be the classic bartender--he's attentive, friendly, and entertaining. Frank kept things lively as he stumped us with his dice games and his magic tricks. More friends arrived and we were having so much fun that we closed the bar down. One regular customer walked in just before closing, sat at the bar, and without even having to make eye contact, Frank slid her favorite drink down the bar. Now that's service. So the next time you feel the need to take a break from the rat race and from living behind your screens, mosey over to Vahl's in Alviso and take a step back in time. Don't get food here. Do come in after work some day and sit in the bar/cocktail lounge. The topless mermaid etched on the wall mirror is a nice touch. Don't expect primo booze. Absolut yes, Grey Goose no. We haven't been by in a while, but the fries we got in the bar were always very tasty, such that there was some suspicion they were fried in meat grease. ETA 9/15/06: The fries are still good. Yay fries! ETA 5/25/07: OK, seriously bumping Vahl's up another star solely for the fries, which may be the best fries in a 10 mile radius of my house. They are hand cut and appear to be properly double-fried, and are crispy and taste like potatoes. Watch out about ordering them right when the kitchen opens at 5, though -- the batch we got last week was a bit oily, I assume because the oil wasn't quite up to temp, but our urgent fry order forced the chef's hand. I honestly don't know what some of the other reviewers are thinking. I had high hopes for this place. My pal, we'll call him "Frank", recommended Vahl's for lunch when our group (from work) wanted to find a close and interesting place for lunch. Walking in, I felt like I was in a Scorsese film. Seriously. The bar is on the right, the restaurant (if I want to call it that) is on the left, and the foyer looks like something out of a retirement community's funeral parlor. We were guided into an empty dining area. We sat down, took a look at the menus, and ordered. I wasn't too sure about what to get, so I decided to play it safe and order the meatloaf. How hard is it to screw up meatloaf?!?! First came the bread. This is occasionally my favorite part of a meal, and it's never the worst part. In this case - you guessed it - it was the worst part. Have you ever been dusting your house (or - even better - your Grandmother's house) and you kicked up so much dust that you can actually smell it a little bit? Well, that's what the bread TASTED like! I know!!! I'm not kidding. It really tasted like "dust". I really didn't know how to react. We all laughed it off and waited for lunch to arrive. When my meatloaf came, I tasted it and pushed the plate away. It tasted as if it had been kept in the freezer for the weekend, and not in a ziploc, but in an old cardboard box so that it would have freezer burn. It tasted like a wet sweater dipped in meat sauce. The veggies were obviously made from frozen, and they looked a bit like what my Mom served me when I was 4 or 5 years old. The veggies were the best part of the meal (aside from the Coke). Lastly, the potatoes (mashed). Eww. F#*@ing gross. Were they made with the late Vahl's ashes? I seriously still wonder about that. Basically, this place is like an Original Joe's, but not as good. We arrived at 5:30 ish on a Saturday, and despite being at times the only table, we had a very "relaxed" service. In fact, we had to wait to be seated as there was no hostess when we arrived. I will say that you do get a lot of food. Every entree comes with an hors d'oeurve of chicken liver pate, a mini-antipasto (single slice of salami per person with olives, a scallion, pickle slices, a mild pepper and a carrot curl), and a three-bean salad. We were also served our choice of soup or salad, in this case a clam chowder which had a really strong initial off-flavor (oregano?) but got better working to the bottom of the cup. The clam chowder had too much roux as it was too thick. The meals also came with garlic bread, which was fine. I ordered fillet of sole and wifey had chicken parmigiana. Both dishes came with penne pasta pomodoro. The pasta was overcooked in what I call the "american style" of the 1950s and 60s, and the tomato sauce was meh. My sole had a noticeably "fishy" odor, which surprised me since we normally get fresh fish in the Bay Area. Wifey's chicken was "okay." The dining room was quiet, but whenever anyone spoke the entire room could hear the conversation. I had the homemade peach pie, which was actually pretty good, if small, and the waitress capped everything off by spilling much of my coffee into the saucer. I wanted to ask for a dry one, but she didn't reappear by the time I finished my dessert. Having wanted to try this place out for about 27 years since I first heard about it, I was really disappointed by the quality of the food. There are some interesting looking items on the menu, like rabbit cacciatore, but there were no vegetarian entrees, which rules out some of our friends. Another weird quirk: they won't let you put tips on a credit card. So, one and a half star food, knocked down to one star for the poor service. I've always seen this place, but shied away due to the ratings. I finally decided to give it a shot. I had a couple guys in from Japan, staying at the Biltmore, so it was convenient. I also thought it would be fun, not something the Japanese guys would typically get to experience. The food, as pretty much everyone points out, is really not very good. I decided to try the veal cordon bleu. As neary as I can tell, it was something previously frozen. My guests had a NY steak, which looked OK, and broilded salmon. Veges were boiled broccoli (same as Mom makes at home), salad was bagged, soup was canned. Bread was pretty greasy, anti-pasta was fine, but how can you screw that up? So, Denny's quality food, but prices were pretty high. Three dinners, 1 glass of wine and maybe 5 beers, total with tip was $144. It's definitely campy, but not worth enduring the bad food and paying way too much. Eat at Maria Elenas across the street, and then hit the bar at Vahls. That actually looked fun. read more

I used to go here for lunch when I worked at the now-abandoned Sony building across the freeway, and my impression was there is no age limit for the wait staff. This can be a mixed blessing. and I still take my camera and sometimes my bicycle out to the nearby marina park. Vahl's is really a throwback old school restaurant. It's know as an upscale place, but also has a spacious bar inside it where you'll find Alviso locals inside. Yes, it's located in Alviso also. So depending on the tide and wind, you may get that fresh sea breeze or the odd mucky mud harbor smell. Of course you can't smell it from inside the restaurant though. It's just that's the way Alviso is. I would mainly describe it at a place my grandfather always liked to go. He'd been there so many times he knew the owners. He'd get dressed up in a coat and tie and go out to eat. It's old school though. Not to make fun, but it's kind of a place where you would imagine you'd see all these people dressed like in the movie Caddyshack. Late 70's early 80's country club would fit the description here nicely. It's a very comfortable atmosphere. I like it. Takes me back. The food is alight, it's above average I would say, and the service is good. The people are really friendly though. It's like a upscale neighborhood place. If you're looking for some kind of progressive fusion trendy style restaurant, then this is not the place for you. It takes you back to when French styled food was the apex of "going out for fine dining" and nothing else. They have a small parking lot that you can usually find parking in. I think it's mainly because most people don't really venture into Alviso. The area is fairly empty and there's no real traffic. My friend wanted to go have a beer and then go to a park to see stars so I immediately thought of Vahl's and the nearby Alviso Park Boat Ramp at the south tip of the San Francisco Bay. I often go to the park but had only been to Vahl's for a work lunch years ago. It was Friday around 7 pm. We walked into Vahl's and saw a trio playing on the other side of the bar so we grabbed a booth. The food was nothing special but the trio were for karaoke!. A lot of older people started streaming in and in no time the keyboard player with the high hair had them all singing. It was a fun, out-of-the-ordinary night. I came here 20 yrs ago when my wife and I where newly married. I remember is being a excellent dinner. So when date night for Valentines turned out to be a last minute opportunity and very difficult to find a open table anyplace. We decided to go to val . VERY BAD decision!!!! We walk in with a reservation at 530. Only 3 senior ladies sitting at a near by table. Other than that the place is empty. The guy in a dirty T-shirt and jeans. Greats us and leads us to a table. He asked us what we want without offering us a menu. He then says all they are serving was what's on the board at the front door. We must have missed the board. So he goes to the door and yells to us what is on the board. So not very happy with the choices. My wife and I choose our meals. Meanwhile the 3 old ladies are getting whatever they want from the waitress seeing to them. Weather it's on the board or not. My wife ask the man if they have any appetizers. His reply is no but maybe we can whip up some fries for ya. The 3 oldies then ask for soup bake potatoes and bread, and they get it all. After eating the burnt on the outside raw chicken n the inside steak and the parts of it hot parts still frozen vegetables. I'm really not happy at all. So the oldies are on to their desert of coffee and slices of pie. When we ask our guy about desert he reply's sorry we don't have desert with the specials tonight. As we are waiting to pay for this awful meal a man walks in and is greeted by the waitress who seems to know him by name. She ask him what he would like and he replies the calamari steak. Which it the exact thing I had chosen then looking at the menu on yelp before going to the restaurant. But was told by the man we could only order off the board. Wow, not what I expected. Quaint little restaurant in a little town but with big taste. I ordered a burger expecting bar food but it was so much more. The burger was amazing. This is a true throwback! This place is stuck in 1950 something.... The service was great, the food (prime rib) was super yummy and the atmosphere was charming. This place is tucked away but it is worth going out to Alviso for. They do have karaoke in the bar - trust me not everyone should be singing but it was not loud which was nice. It's been nearly two years since my first review, so it's time for an update. They now have two beers on tap, and one of them happens to be PBR, which is all you need to know. If you don't know about PBR (that would be Pabst Blue Ribbon) or don't like it, chances are that you hate America :-) If you want to be fancy (like me) ask Frank to toss a lime in your frosty pint of PBR. Ice cold PBR + wedge of lime = smooth drinkin' I forgot to mention that they tend to close pretty early for a bar, around 9pm during the week and 10pm on the weekends (and nights with events), so don't be late if you want to grab a drink! It's not a problem for me since I go to bed pretty early, but you night owls should make it your first (and best) stop. If you stop in be sure to ask Frank about his special on Pike-osst. This is the most homely place I have been in a while! I have felt welcomed ever since I got here! This week was my birthday buddy made me a cheesecake! I was hoping for some old school restaurant experience.. and it missed the mark. The food is barely a notch above hospital cafeteria quality. the salad was generic and plain, my steak was not a $25 steak... it tasted like it was cooked on a foreman grill, the antipasto was weak.... The wait staff was OK... they got the job done.. though a bit slow. The bar... drinks were nothing special. The screens they have for the Giants game were too small... (IMHO) Skip it.
