First time coming to Van Michael for a haircut so I didn't know who to see....the receptionist asked a few questions and set me up with a stylist named Jordan based off my hair texture (thick and natural) and the stylist's abilities. I was super satisfied with my haircut, as it had been 2 years since I got one!Jordan was amazing and thorough--he was knowledgeable about products I should be using in my hair, he cut off every dry/brittle end, and flat-ironed my hair to make sure he didn't miss a strand. Absolutely love my haircut and will be going back to see Jordan again! Oh, the salon was also up to CDC standards and regulations for operation. Face masks were worn by everyone, temperature was checked, sanitizer used, waiting chairs 6 feet apart, and plexiglass shields placed between each stylist's chair. read more

Honestly, I haven't totally been my best self lately with stuff going on in my life, but the entire Van Michaels midtown staff went above and beyond to make me feel taken care of. This was my first time at the Midtown location and it was so great! The salon has done a great job ensuring the safety of their employees and clients during the pandemic. Everyone in the salon must wear a mask, there are plexiglass dividers at the register and between each stylist's chair. I felt very safe/comfortable being in the salon. I saw Walker and I've found my new stylist! She is absolutely amazing and listened to everything I said I wanted. She even checked we were on the same page by showing me pictures of what she believed I wanted. I have been to this salon regularly since 2011, and base my review off of a long history with this salon. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars here. There are multiple experiences I could mention, but I will sum it up as this: AVOID THIS SALON UNLESS YOU WANT PREMIUM PRICES IN EXCHANGE FOR SCHEDULING ISSUES AND SUBPAR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Also, they started using a call center disconnected from the salon, and scheduling has become a NIGHTMARE. I have frequently had issues scheduling or have been inappropriately scheduled. This results in chaos at the appointment. It feels like the result of this problem is they rush through the appointment so they can keep their dollar. However, this results in problems for me and bars me from fulfilling my hair goals. I feel like I've become just a number at this salon stuck in an inefficient system with impersonal service. Because of issues at my last appointment, I am stuck going to a wedding in 3 days without my hair color complete, yet I paid $300 for a keratin treatment, only half of my appointment was completed. I was doing the locks of Love, cut so she suggested we take a before and after pictures which turned out great! My haircut is super chic and modern, thanks to her! I got a balayage done at another salon about 2 months ago. Though the colorist did a good job, it was much lighter than what I asked for and I was really unhappy with it. I come to Van Michael to get my hair cut by Zach (who is fantastic) so I thought I'd take a chance on getting a little bit of a fix done there as well. I called Van Michael and Ryan had an opening for Saturday morning. I arrived and was treated with the usual professionalism and personal touch I always get at this salon (someone taking me back, offering me something to drink, and then being met by the stylist). Ryan was fantastic, he took the time to discuss what I did and didn't like about the color I had previously gotten and suggested some ways to make it more "me". I also appreciated his professionalism - he didn't badmouth the other colorist at all, instead he complimented her work and noted it was well done, just not exactly what I wanted and that we could change that. Around this time, Ryan had an earlier client heading out the door who he had just done a bayalage/ombre on - it was gorgeous :). He was a joy to talk to throughout the whole process and the end product was amazing. It was EXACTLY what I had wanted the first time around. I didn't really think that anyone would be able to fully correct the first go round and was prepared to be happy with bringing the tone of the blonde down a little, but he really hit it dead on and I couldn't be happier. I have had something personal going on so I haven't been able to write a review until now. Most of my friends who have beautiful hair have said nothing but positive things about Van Michael salon so I was very excited when I needed to get a haircut and finally made an appointment. Here's some background: my hair was down past my waist and I had some blonde highlighting/balayage toward the middle and ends. Notice that I am using the word had. I booked the appointment with one of the new talents and had to wait almost 2 weeks for the appointment. The salon was very nicely decorated and was extremely busy with zero empty chairs. Here is where things start to go south. I met my stylist and she was very nice- I won't say her name because I really don't want her to get into trouble. She asked me what I was thinking of doing with my hair and I explained that since I did have very long hair I did want a cut that was more substantial than a trim and I gestured to her on my body about how long I wanted the cut, which was about to my mid-chest level. This would have been a cut around 6 inches. Remember that I came in with waist length hair. She said "wow that is a dramatic cut" and I said "Well it's not that bad, I will still have length" and she agreed and I didn't think anything of it. Looking back this should have been a blaring red alarm. I also said "I was thinking of bangs in the front" and she dismissed me with "no I wouldn't do bangs on you." So first she gave me a one minute shoulder massage which I was not expecting and was actually kind of painful because I was tense. After this she led me to the basin and washed my hair and did a nice scalp massage. Then she took me to the chair and got started. She was asking me some kind of small talk question- like where I'm from or something- when she started making the first cut and this was the end of my long hair. I guess there was a miscommunication where she didn't understand how long I wanted my hair? Or maybe she wasn't thinking and just did it from muscle memory? I have no idea. I wish that I had vocally stated where I wanted my hair to be in length because unfortunately the stylist cut almost an entire foot of my hair off. There was no going back- she cut the entire length off with the first snip. The only thing I can do is beg the salon to implement a policy of when someone comes in with very long hair, to please show the amount of hair about to be cut and confirm that it is okay to cut so much off. This could have been prevented if she had shown me the amount she was about to cut, but it was too late. I was staring at my reflection and I stopped talking and she noticed this. My hair went from past waist-length to just above my collarbone. She did some choppy layers and the haircut would have been very nice if it was what I wanted, but it's not at all remotely what I wanted and I was so proud of my long hair and it is all gone now. She cut so much off that the highlights/balayage I had in my hair were cut completely out as well and my hair is all monotone. I did not saying anything because realistically it was too late and there is nothing anybody can do- my hair can't be reattached. I went home and cried. The last time I had my hair this short was when I was in high school and I hated it as much then as I do now. I will have to wait the year or more for my hair to grow back. When it does, I don't think I will risk going back. So, PLEASE, Van Michael- have your stylists confirm when they think a dramatic cut is about to happen. read more

I can't remember the name of the girl who cut my hair, which I know makes this review relatively unhelpful. Even so, I was extremely disappointed with my experience here. I'm a guy who isn't super into hair, so I admittedly don't know the lingo when I try to describe how I like my hair cut. However, I was encouraged when my stylist showed me pictures of various hair cut options to help me describe what I like. One of the pictures was almost exactly the way I like my hair, and the stylist said that wouldn't be a problem. Much to my dismay, when I walked out of the salon my hair was completely uneven, and buzzed almost to the top of my head. My stylist had combed the hair over the unevenness, so I didn't even realize until I got home. The hair has grown out for about a week, and looks passable, but nothing like the photo she showed me. While this salon tries really hard to make you feel like you are having a high end hair salon experience, it ended up feeling very hollow. This isn't the first salon I've tried here in midtown, and I'm starting to think I may just have to drive back to Athens when I need to get my hair cut. read more

I recently moved for work and didn't know where to go until I asked a lady at work who had cut her beautiful trendy hair and she replied, "Walker at Van Michael!" Again, so fortunate to have been referred to Walker! Fortuitously, i saw the beautiful hairstyle she created for her client before me and knew immediately upon serendipitous introductions that I could trust her with my neglected lengthy locks- which was confirmed yet again during her consult when she wanted to first learn my hair routine, or lack thereof. I don't know how she made my damaged frizzy boring hair look so beautiful, yet miraculously she did! I only wish I had a before photo to demonstrate just how talented she is and how she fixed my messy mop of hair! I've been to Van Michael Midtown 3x. The first couple times, I saw Jeremiah for highlights and had a good experience. My 3rd time, I was scheduled to see Jasper, since Jeremiah was unavailable. I showed up for my appointment, but for some reason Jasper didn't, and I was given to a "New Talent," Rosalie, instead. Rosalie got to work on my hair, but after getting 1/4 of the way through, told me she had seen LICE in my scalp and had to terminate the service. I was mortified, but since I work with kids thought it wasn't outside the realm of possibility. She took out the foils she'd done, washed my hair, and I was on my way to fix my newfound lice problem. Only I didn't have a lice problem. 3 hours and a $90 clinic visit later, I was assured by a doctor that I only had a dry scalp, no lice. I went back to the salon to let them know they had a stylist making unfounded medical diagnoses, but the receptionist was surprisingly blasé about it all. She told me she was happy to reschedule my service now that I had a clean bill of health. But after this mess, I'm never going back. I'm sure I can find a new salon where the stylists can differentiate between lice and dandruff. read more

I've been going to this salon to see the BEST colorist EVER, Jeremiah Reed, for many, many years. I have blonde hair that has gone from long to short, and is in the process of growing back out again. Never once have I had anything but gorgeous, natural-looking color. I get compliments on it all the time, and have Jeremiah Reed to thank. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. He also turned me on to Walker Dalton who cuts my hair. Despite her quirky "look" she is meticulous, spends time discussing what I want/where I want to take my look, and showing me how to style it myself. A true dream team!! Aveda salons are pretty much a shoe in for 4 to 5 star ratings if you ask me, and I think people will agree their reviews are not so much for the salon, but for their stylist, colorist, or esthetician. Mine's name was Dustin and I got lucky. Which is why I go to Aveda salons in the first place- increase my odds of getting someone who can do my hair. I feel like they are all well trained and I like the fact that stylists charge more based on their experience, so there's no chance of mistakenly thinking you're getting an experienced stylist just because you're in an expensive salon. I sat down nervously in Dustin's chair with my script all ready, and before I got the first two lines out Dustin was already nodding in agreement and finishing my sentences. Nice. My pulse slows and I relax with business out of the way. I can tell I'm in good hands. As he puts scissors to hair we chit chat- I'm new to A-town so he tells me where the coolest neighborhoods are, where to eat, and what festivals are the best. I'm thrilled with my whole haircut experience and will definitely go back to Van Michael to see Dustin. The salon itself is really nothing fancy, its a clean white bustling space, and not that there's anything wrong with it, but it lacks character and tranquility, and could easily be duplicated in a strip mall. Plain linoleum tile floor, white sheetrock walls all at 90 degree angles, flat industrial lighting, yawn. A nice centerpiece or a water feature or chandelier or even some artwork would go a long way here. So 4 stars for the overall experience because the salon is short on glitz, but the stylist, Dustin, is totally 5 star glamour. read more

I have been seeing Rob Cook at the Midtown salon for about a year now. I often show him pictures of what I want my haircuts to look like and he is able to execute them perfectly! In addition to that, he takes extra time to show me how to style my hair. I have thick hair that is layered. I find that I do not have to get it cut as often since it still looks good when it is growing out. On top of being extremely talented, Rob is super nice and client focused! I have been getting a cut and color at this place for years and still come here despite living and working OTP. This is the first time I've been pissed. The whole process took 3 1/2 hours, for chin length hair. I wasn't having anything special done and was an hour late meeting friends for dinner. I didn't even have time to be styled, which made me even more mad because we had a ladies evening at Chihuly Nights. My big issue is the customer appreciation events. I've tried to participate by pre-ordering products and services, since I am never in the salon during these times. An employee is supposed to call you to purchase your order over the phone, but no one has ever called me. I complained about this and was given 20% off my services, but I did not have time to even deal with product, since I was an hour late to dinner. Just a fiasco. read more
