Van's Nails has always been the absolute best. I've been a client for at least 6-7 years (I took a pause during Covid), and have been happily attending ever since. Nhung is professional, reasonably priced, and produces reliably GREAT work. On top of that, Nhung is so nice, accommodating and fun to talk to. I always enjoy catching up with her when I stop in :) Back when she and Michelle had their shop on Lafayette, it was hard to get an appointment because they were SO booked. Post Covid, they've downsized to a smaller location (not an entire shop) but Nhung remains open and willing to take clients on a slightly reduced schedule. This place is located in a small 3-store strip mall on Lafayette between Reed and El Camino, almost right under the railroad overpass. Drive too fast and you might miss it. The parking lot can hold about 6 cars. The place is small but the service is nice. The girls here are really sweet and they keep to your appointment time (which I appreciate). There are about four pedicure salon chairs in there (if you're looking to see how many girls you can bring). FRENCH TIP SHELLAC: Van is super nice. It was my first time getting shellac and she explained how to care for them and what to expect. I never felt rushed and she made sure my nails were exactly how I wanted them. ($20 for Shellac, $5 for French). FRENCH TIP PEDICURE: The other lady was really nice. She too, made sure my nails were perfect. This review is a follow up of my nails that were done two days ago. Horrible job on my manicure bc my cuticles are already coming out. Also I got the gel which was applied too thickly and already peeling when other nail places last about 2-3 weeks. It was applied too thickly that when my nail grows out it will be uneven when compared to my original nail because the gel is thick. My heel was not scrubbed well during my pedicure because after showering my heel was still coarse. I went by the yelp reviews because I was new in the area but yelp did me wrong this time. I guess you get what you pay for. It was $10 less than what I usually pay for a mani and pedi with gel on my nails. Also my honey got his nails done and the clear polish came off the second day. Good Morning! I went here, because i saw all the reviews, and figured I could get a nice, clean pedicure for a good price, which i DID, but I think I'll just come here for painting my nails/fingers. The lady who did my peddy was nice, but a bit too gentle. She did a nice job, and I got a flower, but If you need to get your nails "clipped" there's an extra charge. My Pedi with a flower, clipping nails and tip was $25. I usually go to Vally Fine Nails, and there, they STICK to their Appointments, and I know their work and i usually pay $30! At Van's with my Appointment, i had to wait 45 mintues for my peddy to start. Granted it's Prom season, they should stick to their appointments. I wish I could remember the name of the lady who did my nails but she seemed to be the manager or at least the main person who was taking appointments and such. Anyway, she was awesome! Super friendly and paid great attention to detail when doing my shellac manicure. I had a simple (ish) design from Pinterest that she happily agreed to do for me. She was also really helpful in helping me pick the right shades that would match the picture (see the pic I uploaded). The resemblance is uncanny! I got the shellac done before I left for a three week vacation and they lasted till the very end! Just a minor little chip on one of the nails, but there was a lot of luggage handling and city hopping on this trip, so I was quite surprised they lasted so long. Michelle did an amazing job on my shellac mani and regular pedi! She made sure that all of the curves of my French tips were perfect and that my nail shapes were exactly what I wanted. Additionally, she was such a pleasure to talk to and made time fly by! Prices are cheaper in general in SoCal (which is where I'm from), but compared to other places that I searched in the area, they were by far the best. My experience was horrible. I came in for a basic gel removal and manicure. First, the lady assigned to me dipped my hands in cold acetone (there usually is a warm water bowl placed underneath the cold bowl) and she burned me with the buffer. They finally gave me the warm water. Second, the next person assigned to give my manicure did not bother to clip my cuticles, give me a clear undercoat, or a hand message. When I asked why wasn't I given basic treatment, one of the owners said, "It depends on the technician if they choose to do that," all as she was applying her make up for an event. However, they charged me the full price for the service. I've seen unprofessionalism, but not quite like this. Needless to say I will never dream of setting my feet back there. read more

I've been coming here for almost 4 years. I loved this place and usually got pretty good service but after one really negative experience, I started realizing the cons. I scheduled a 5:30 appt for me and my friend to get 2 gel manis with design and 1 pedi. We arrived 5 minutes early but weren't seen until 20-30 min after our appt time. Van was 2 nails into my mani when she told me she had to go work on a client who came in after me. I was a bit confused as there was a shuffle between all 3 technicians trying to figure out who could work on my nails. I guess Nhung (?) isn't that skilled in designs. Michelle just finished working on my friend and agreed to do my design when she thought it was just one nail. When she saw the photo showing it on all nails, she told Nhung she couldn't do it and just walked away, not even really acknowledging me. Nhung jumped in to attempt the design, which I appreciated, but it just wasn't working. We agreed to remove the 3 nail designs she did and wait for Van to finish with her client. At this point, I had been there for almost 2 hours and only had 3 fingers done with a design so I was a bit tired but tried to stay positive. Van finally came over to work on my nails and started to make small talk. She said she loved me for being a longtime customer and that I was always patient. She asked me how my mom was doing (we've never talked about my mom before and they've never met). She also asked about school and how I'm going to be a lawyer. I graduated 4 years ago with an econ degree, so that conversation made me very uncomfortable. I could tell she was rushing through the job. I'm sure she didn't want to be there past closing time just as much as I didn't want to, but I still wanted my nails to look good so I asked her to fix up some details to which she responded with, "see, this is why you're the last client." Nhung tried to stay late with Van and Van kept telling me that Nhung should be home by now. She shouldn't be there that late. Again, it made me uncomfortable. I left the salon around 8:20 and paid $62 for the mani/pedi, only to get it redone somewhere else the very next day because in all frankness, I thought they looked like shit. I know not all designs turn out exactly like the photo, but it just looked bad and half-assed to me. I also understand Van was the only one with the skillset to work on the other client but I had told them over the phone we wanted 2 manis with design. They could have done a better job scheduling the appointments so that someone was available to work on us. If they had done that, we wouldn't have gone down this slippery slope. I had a negative experience from all 3 technicians in one appointment. I felt patronized, neglected, and blamed for us being there late. I never once received an apology from Van. Needless to say, after coming here for 4 years, I will never come back to this salon again. Every experience counts and it just takes one to ruin it all. I did appreciate that Nhung apologized for not doing the design well. She did a much simpler design for me once before and was very detailed and meticulous. She's very kind and I can see that she works hard, even staying as late as she could with Van while we finished up. To sum it up: PROS - easy to get an appt, fairly clean, good selection of nail polish colors, (usually) friendly technicians CONS - runs late on apps, few number of nail technicians (at least on weekday nights, I've only seen max 3 people), only a couple of nail technicians can do designs, small parking lot read more

Van's is not flashy, but it is clean, and inexpensive. Van and Michelle are awesome! They're both very sweet and have great personalities. This is the ONLY place I will go to for Shellac. My polish lasts 3-4 weeks and is always on-point. ** Please note that the 3-4 weeks differs from person-to-person. I have friends that have theirs for just a week or two. I believe it has something to do with your nails! The pedicures are great! Aromatic bath salts are added to your footbath, and warm towels are applied to your lower legs... HEAVEN! I recommend: 1) Making an appointment 2) Do not anticipate parking in-front of the shop. Parking is limited. With that said, there is plenty of parking on the side streets, adjacent to Van's. 3) Eat something before going in for your appointment! Van's always has the food network playing on their large flat screen T.V. and I always end up with a growling tummy :P ** Van's will give you a stamp card, and you will earn a free mani/pedi over time. Damn, the location of this place is pretty shady. I never would have come here without Yelp, and I definitely spent the better part of my manicure wondering if I should double check whether or not I locked my car. There's a tiny parking lot out front, but the curbs are red and on the side it said (NO PARKING, TOW AWAY ZONE) so I just decided to do neighborhood parking instead, which is 2 hours free during the daytime. Still, the price here is unbeatable and I was pleased with my shellac French manicure (only $25 w/o tip!) You're not going to get the most amazing service here, and the ambiance isn't the most relaxing, but you'll get a solid manicure for a great price (I think regular is only $18, and regular shellac is $20). The girls are also very nice and were pretty thorough (even more so than some of the salons in SF), which is especially important for French manis. However, I didn't see them use disposable water bins for pedicures, so I'm not sure if I'd come here for pedicures. Also the tools didn't come in the packaging that usually signifies autoclaving, so, again, probably wouldn't come for pedicures. Even at the nicest nail salons, my manicures start to chip within days if not hours, so recently I've started to do shellac, despite my fear of UV lamps. This definitely isn't a place that offers fancy new non-UV LED lamps, so look elsewhere if that's a big concern. They do, however, use legit CND shellac (the original and best, longest-lasting kind) which I appreciate. They also carry Zoya for regular mani/pedis which I also have to give props for. My manicure wasn't completely perfect, but I can't complain--I can't get over $25 for a French shellac that won't chip for 2-3 weeks... seriously amazing! I'll be back for shellac! read more

On August 28th I came into the salon to get my nails done for the Labor Day Weekend. I work in the building next to their and figured I would try them out for the first time. I was heading to the East Coast to visit with family and wanted to try the Shelac so I wouldn't have to worry about my nails. By Saturday morning my nails were lifting and getting caught in my hair when I was fixing it. One by one, on my right hand the shellac began to lift and peel completely off. Now please understand that I was not picking at my nails, the shellac literally just peeled right off like a sticker! As soon as I got back into Town on Septemeber 3rd I walked down to the salon to show them my nails. The nail tech told me I would have to call or come back to speak with the owner. I just came back from walking down to speak with the owner and she tells me that because I didn't call (again I was a first time customer and in New York on vacation) she would only be able to fix my nails for half of the regular price. I had pictures with dates to document what had happened but she barely looked at them. I told her I wanted them to take the rest of the shallac off and give me a gift card for the full price to come back and get a manicure or pedicure. In the same breathe she states that shellac is supposed to last for two-four weeks but again was unwilling to compramise with me as her customer. No information was provided to me by her nail tech in regard to if anything goes wrong with your nails. It was never stated, it isn't posted anywhere as a policy. I've come here since April? I believe. First time was with the boyfriend. Came here and got acrylics and he got a normal mani (those engineer/bballin hands needed some tlc) We were taken care of very well. For those of you who do not ask or talk to the girls. Van is the owner, Michelle is the sister and there is another girl on the weekends (have yet to meet her). It's a mom and pop nail salon that tries their best to remember what each of their regulars are up to! I love coming to Van's because it is always her doing my nails. Owner's put a higher degree of effort to make sure your nails are beautiful, it's their names on the line! What I LOVE about this place is that it ISN'T the LA salons (even though I love and miss it)...where there are a ridiculous amount of girls working and being loud...while other women are chatting away. Maybe I just like it to be more peaceful when you're getting pampered! (I usually go on the weekdays...so I don't know how it is on the weekends) I LOVE that they don't up-sale me..I came in for what I want and I don't need anything else that you are selling~ thank you for respecting that. I LOVE that she calls to let me know that I need to be pushed back a little or can come in earlier. That is service. Instead of letting me wait around like some customers do to them. I LOVE that Van knows her stuff. When you ask why people would use acrylics or shellac or gel she knows the answer and will tell you with a lot of detail the pros and cons of each of those types of manicures. Back in LA too many of the girls didn't speak fluent enough to tell me what is going on with my nails... I am currently getting shellac done to my nails and those lasted a good 3 weeks...no peeling, no chipping. Got a regular pedi and a shellac mani here today. So, here is the breakdown..... The place is in a shady area and parking can be tricky....I parked in the back and checked with the lady (van i think) if it was ok to park there. I suggest you go there in the afternoon. The nail salon it self is average clean but definitely not "spa-like." As soon as I arrived I picked the nail color. Good choice of colors and NP brands such as ZOYA and OPI ( NOTE: I did see one of the ladies sitting down with nail polishes and adding thinner to it!!!!) the shellac nail color selection was also pretty nice. Van helped me match the shellac that I was getting on my fingers to a regular shade for my toes. Now, for the actual service. Ni did my nails she did a good job on the pedicure (eventhough she nicked my skin and it bled a little, she was very apologetic and put the blue antiseptic on it) the pedicure was a soak, scrub, nail clean and file and a massage! I would have given them an extra star if she hadn't hurt me :( Shellac mani- it was my first time trying it.....I am including a picture for a realistic idea but I don't think Ni did a great job on it....we will see how long it lasts. Since I've moved to the bay area, finding a nail Salon that I loved was hard. I went to countless salons and I'm so glad I came across Van's Nails. See my pictures showing these folks can't even do basic application of shellac without doing a horrible job. I went in at the recommendation of a friend. They were not friendly and the service was nothing at all special. I got home and noticed that my simple pedicure, which had nothing exceptional to write about, had mistakes on both of my big toes! I went back the next day although I walked in without an appointment as I am really busy. They made me wait an HOUR before even just putting on a cotton ball on my toes to start soaking off the shellac. Then they finally soaked it off, and made me wait another 30 MINUTES. After an HOUR AND A HALF of waiting I asked for a full refund of my pedicure. They refused to give it to me, and scolded me for not making an appointment as they were so "Busy". I shouldn't have to make an appointment, drive across town and wait AN HOUR AND A HALF to have you fix your MISTAKE. I left, without any refund or apology, drove across town and paid for another FULL pedicure to fix not only the shellac issue, but the fact that they really didn't do a good job cleaning up my skin, etc. Will NEVER go here again. I've come to this nail salon two times prior with a friend and have had a great experience each time. Van's is capable of doing detailed designs and the technicians are usually friendly and thorough. This third visit to Van's however, has convinced me to find a new salon. I came with my friend (who also had a terrible experience) to get a gel manicure with a camouflage design. Michelle (the technician who did my nails) looked at the photo I showed her, and asked if it was alright for her to free-style my nails instead of exactly copying the photo. I agreed since I trusted her to be able to replicate the overall design on my gel manicure. However, looking down at my nails, I saw a design that looked nothing like the camo print I wanted. I have to take responsibility for not speaking up earlier about not liking how the design turned out (I was hoping it would turn out better with another layer of gel). From my experience with gel nails, technicians will layer designs on your nails to achieve a design you can't replicate with regular nail polish. However, Michelle just put a base gel, then painted regular nail polish on my nail, and topped it off with clear gel. This meant that my nails didn't have the dimension or layering of print that I wanted and instead turned out like random pebble circles. My main complaint is about how the technicians responded to my dissatisfaction with the quality of the work done on my nails. Aside from the design, the colors were smudged from the polish not being completely dried before applying the gel top coat, each shape was not completely filled in, and gel polish was messily stuck on my cuticles & none was applied at the tip of my nail which caused the polish to already lift and peel at the tips (plus still being wet under the gel). Instead of taking responsibility for the poor quality work (the technician admitted that the nail polish underneath hadn't been completely dried), the technicians said they could just put additional gel on top of my nails to prevent it from lifting more. (It has been 3 days and half my nails are chipped) When I pointed out that a lot of the parts were smudged and poorly done, the technician responded by saying "You are not supposed to look closely at your nails. You look at your nails from afar." I didn't know how to respond to that comment. I was spending my time and money (had to wait +30 min after appointment time to be helped) there for a good job so that I COULD examine my nails closely and be satisfied with it. Tell me this, does THIS look like a camouflage print to you???? Looking at it now, all I can do is laugh about how ridiculous it looks. read more

Van is amazing and so is her sister Michelle. My daughter and I have been going to Van for well over 10 years. They are so kind and sweet. Her new location is just even more amazing. If you want some relax time this is the place to go. Doesn't matter if your getting a pedi or mani your nails will look AMAZING. read more
