I had a termite inspection with Jim and was very impressed with how thorough and professional he was. He took his time checking every area of the house, including rooms, closets, bathrooms, and the garage, which was a big difference from other inspectors I've had before. Jim clearly explained where termites could potentially travel and what signs to watch for, and he provided practical recommendations without trying to oversell unnecessary work. His estimate was reasonable, and their company offers a 5-year warranty, which is much better than the 1-2 year warranties many companies provide. We were recently at the Home and Garden show in Santa Clara, when we came across the folks at Vanguard. We chatted with their team for a bit and went ahead with scheduling an inspection. From the get go, communication was top notch from this company! Jim texted to let me know exactly when he was showing up within "the window" provided, which I really appreciated! He was extremely knowledgeable and patient, answering questions, and not trying to sell me services we didn't need. So refreshing to hear his honesty, and his experience in the business was absolutely clear to see. We definitely wanted to move forward with them, as they offered a 5 year warranty instead of 1 or 2 years, like other companies. Scheduling was easy (Shout out to Keirstan!) and the following week, Gabriel and Robert came to provide the services we signed up for. We needed Vanguard to treat our home for full drywall treatment, as well as some surface fungus areas that needed attention. Like Jim, Gabriel was on time, thorough in his explanations, courteous, very diligent, and answered all my questions. His experience was so obvious, and you could plainly see how much he cared about doing the job RIGHT! We paid the price on the contract, no upselling, no sneaky fees. In summary, this is a family owned company that CARES about doing a great job! The people are top notch, and I couldn't have asked for more! Tl;dr - CEO calls up clients to bully client on price mistake, repeatedly throws employee under the bus in a repugnant way. Vanguard gave us a quote over a year ago so I called them out to inspect for an updated quote on fumigation for termites and wood boring beetles as the old quote had expired. The inspector, John, apparently a new hire, was extremely courteous, informative, and a joy to be around, which is why what happened later left such a sour taste in my mouth. He provided a quote for $4526 for fumigation of one structure. After attempting to lock in the quote, I received a phone call from the CEO of Vanguard (George, I believe) at 8:30AM telling me that the quote was "a typo" and that they would lose money at that price and they could not provide service at that price point. The new quote was for $5800. I replied that I felt this was a scummy practice, at which point the CEO started yelling and talking over me for the remainder of the call. The CEO threw his employee under the bus repeatedly and said they would honor the original quote by trying to get "the inspector to cover the difference." Setting aside the fact that this CEO is singling out an employee to cover his business' operating costs, this is a failure of training on the company's part. Any reasonable CEO would say at this point, "we've made a mistake and we'll split the difference with you," or at a minimum, apologize. Vanguard does not have a reasonable CEO. The CEO further stated that I "was being recorded" in a threatening voice. I asked why he would mention that, and why he was talking over me constantly. He replied, "Bro, I'll talk when I want." He also mentioned how many millions he does in business and why a job like this was inconsequential for his bottom line. All in all, pretty repulsive stuff to hear from a CEO. He then had the inspector call me directly to profusely apologize, rather than apologize himself. Of course John, the inspector, was courteous as always, but it felt really gross for a CEO to make his employee call a client to grovel for forgiveness for the CEO's blatant unprofessionalism. The worst part is, I feel like he may punish John for this, who was the only person I've interacted with from this company doing a decent job in the first place. All in all, a very negative experience (except the inspector, John). I would avoid putting money in this CEO's pocket. read more

John patiently answered every single one--our email chain is 28 emails long and he never once made me feel like I was bothering him. He explained everything clearly and made sure we understood each step. John also made sure we were prepared for the fumigation and had the Nylofume bags we needed without hassle. His customer care made a stressful situation much more manageable. On the day of fumigation, I double-checked about our shed being included in the treatment. John had measured the shed during his inspection, but there seemed to be a communication mix-up with the fumigation company Vanguard subcontracted for the actual fumigation work. Instead of pointing fingers or making excuses, Vanguard sorted it out immediately and made sure the shed was properly tented and fumigated before the day's end. TL;DR: Vanguard caught a pest problem another company missed, provided accurate identification and appropriate treatment, resolved issues quickly when they arose, and delivered exceptional customer service throughout. As soon as we approved the quote, we were scheduled for service the very next day!
