The outside may not seem welcoming, but to the elderly locals and families, it's a classic spot! Food itself is decent and very decent pricing as well!! Welcome to Day 9 of OC Food Journals, where I try a new place every day so you don't have to. I've been driving past this place for probably 20 years, and I finally decided to stop in and give it a shot. And oh boy, I think I might have made the mistake of ordering the wrong things. I kept hearing that this place is really known for their bánh xèo, but I just wasn't in the mood for bánh xèo that day, so naturally, I ordered something else. I went with the bánh hỏi thịt nướng, and honestly, it was not good. The grilled meat was tough, and the meat itself was pretty flavorless. It just wasn't something I enjoyed. But at the same time, I can't completely fault the restaurant because I probably ordered the one thing I shouldn't have. If everyone is telling me the bánh xèo is what they're known for, maybe I should have actually listened and ordered it. I also got the bún riêu, and this one was actually okay. It tasted like what I would expect bún riêu to taste like. Nothing that blew me away, but nothing really wrong with it either. So honestly, I'm not sure how helpful this review is because I didn't order the dish this place is known for. Maybe I completely missed the point of coming here. If you've tried their bánh xèo, let me know because I might have to come back and give this place another chance. One thing I can definitely confirm is the reputation for being cheap. In 2026, with food prices the way they are, finding meals for under $10 is becoming harder and harder, and this place actually lives up to that reputation. The staff and the owners are very nice and fast with orders. The restaurant is clean and well maintained. My family has been going here for 20+ years. The quality is still the same for all food items. Banh xeo is very affordable. They did not increase the price much but reduced some meat and shrimps instead which is totally acceptable. I rate them 4 stars for their low price n only one of 2 restaurants left still grilling the pork in bun cha Hanoi. Today was a one off they gave me cold n old food had I not checked I would be very mad. They made a good flan, it has caramel 100% of the other restaurants put coffee or vanilla as caramel is a hassle to make I know bc I used to cook the sugar into the caramel. Service is quick but you may have to time your ability to pay at the cashier's window as both the many diners and customers purchasing items from the take-out table may form a long line to pay up. We found out about Van's restaurant purely through word of mouth, and sometimes those are the absolute best discoveries. When we got there, the place was buzzing with locals casually chatting with the owner, creating such a welcoming and friendly vibe. The highlight for us was their signature dish, Banh Xeo. This restaurant is always PACKED but we've never had a problem with the wait time as tables turn over quickly. We're usually able to get seated right away. Love the banh xeo here. Savory rice pancake that's popular in Vietnam. The name refers to the sound the batter makes when it's poured into the skillet. The pancakes are made from rice flour, water, and turmeric powder, and can also be called Vietnamese crêpes. Traditionally served with fresh lettuce, herbs, and a dipping sauce. The dipping sauce for southern-style bánh xèo is sweet and sour, made from fish sauce, lime, chili, garlic, and sugar. It also comes with boiled shrimp, pork, sprouts. The menus I attached made it seem small but it's quite large seemed.. like 8-10" long. Must have this We also ordered vermicelli and a side of fried shrimp and sweet potato fries..Sadly they weren't crispy and were cold! Heard thar it's not usually like this. But I came there to pick out the ready made items they had in the middle table. You get a plastic bag and you pick and choose what you want. They had several banana leaf packaged items. They do have a little description in English that was helpful. I saw many Asian aunties and uncles, or grandpas and grandmas going in and filling their plastic bags so I knew everything would be good. But I was only feeling savory that day, so I got the triangle shaped one. Inside was a delicious saucy ground pork with sliced black mushrooms. Love supporting family owned whole in the wall businesses, the decor and atmosphere is a little chaotic, but makes you feel like you're in Vietnam. They have to go items, such as desserts and bakery items you can just grab and pay at the front (I heard their flan was pretty good). As many reviewers have mentioned, the prices here are cheap! My bowl of Mi Quang was only $9, and most dishes are under $9! Although prices are affordable, taste wise the food could be average or below average compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the surrounding area. Usually mi Quang is more on the dry side with a small amount of concentrated broth, but my bowl was like a soup. They gave bone in pork rib meat and a couple pieces of shrimp, and a piece of cha lua (Vietnamese ham). The flavor was there but not as aromatic and strong compared to my other favorite Mi Quang restaurants. My friend ordered the rice cakes (Banh Beo) and a rice dish and wasn't impressed as well. Honestly the only place I get a banh xeo because they make it the best. Not only is it affordable, but the portion size is huge. I've been coming here since I was a kid and nothing much has changed besides the size of my appetite.
