I really like the food here. But tonight they lost my love for them. As I was ordering the drive through, some random red car U-turned and got in front of me. I thought they would tell them to go to the back of the line but they actually took their order from the window. Now I had to wait longer for my food when I got there first. When I got to the window I asked the girl how they were able to cut everyone. the girl told me they got there first even though they didn't order from the intercom. Love this place! Just moved to Tempe from Phoenix 4 months ago and hate the Berto's chains, way too inconsistent. Seen the reviews for bad customer service, but that hasn't been our experience. All the girls there have been nothing but sweet and gracious and helpful! We go every week, sometimes twice a week. Carne asada burrito- good, bean and cheese burrito- excellent!: yes, they do charge an extra $1 for adding cheese, well with it! All i have tried from here is their shrimp cocktail and it was NASTY. Some of the shrimp still had the sh*t in it. Also it tasted very fishy and the cocktail juice was very sweet which personally isn't my favorite. Haven't tried their other foods though. read more

I should have read the reviews before I chose to eat at both of the dueling Mexican fast food joints, right next door to each other. I will be cutting and pasting this review, edited appropriately for each establishment. When it comes to mediocre, yet delicious and fulfilling dive fast food Mexican, VAQUEROS CARNE ASADA blows its neighbor out of the water. I ordered 2 carne asada tacos at both places and the meat at VCA was so much better. Moist and flavorful and as a whole was a pretty great taco. Riliberto's was dry and flavorless and had the texture of fatty pieces of meat that sat on the floor all day. read more

Must be under new ownership. I have been a fan of this place for many years. Averaging easily 5-6 a month. Lately, I have noticed the food isn't quite the same. This week was the last time I eat there. I went inside with a buddy from out of town. I order my food, Carne Asada fries no pico. The girl taking my order (young heavy set with glasses) tells me "they don't come with pico" "cool" I say. My buddy who has been looking up at the menu this whole time not paying attention orders the same thing as I and says "no tomatoes". The girl straight up yelled at him "I said no pico in them which has tomatoes" my buddy asks her "what's your problem I didn't hear you". To her credit she half ass apologized. When I get my "carne asada" fries, there's no carne asada. It's ground beef and in top of it was cold. We finished eating, i go back to order more food for my family. No carne asada fries this time. It's a new girl this time. Although both were wearing the same exact glasses. Thick white brimmed 80s style. Don't know if this matters. But this one was even worse. I order a quesadilla, a breakfast burrito and a Mar y Tierra. First she looks at me and says "mar y Tierra what"? That look with her head cocked to the side. They only have an item by this name and it's a quesadilla. So I tell her that. She's playing dumb at this point. She charges me $17 which is too low. Quesadilla is like $11 alone. I tell her the total is low, she turns the screen around but doesn't say anything. After deciphering her system, I noticed my Bfast burrito isn't there. I tell her "oh it's missing my burrito" she replies "you didn't order one" I tell her "yes i did" she switched it up and says "well you didn't specify what type of bfast burrito you wanted" at this point she's just making things up. In summary, a lot of the staff is new and rude which isn't a deal breaker, but they're using ground beef as their "carne asada" that cheap 70/30 with the cartilage. Moved here from Chicago about two months ago and we are on the internal search for a good taco. I was in Tempe and I thought I would try it. What a mistake. The girl at the cash register was so confused. I got the Carne Asada taco and the grilled chicken taco. They both came out, you couldn't tell the difference and they both look gray. Is there some sort of secret war to see who can serve the largest burritos in the valley? If so, Vaquerros just dropped a huge bomb on the competition. I was straight INTIMIDATED by my burrito. I questioned now only WHY someone felt the need to make them so huge, but HOW it was able to cost significantly less than the competition. They prepare their meat a little differently. It seemed to be tenderized and rather finely chopped. It was marinated in...well, I can't put my finger on it. But the meat, pico, and guac inside seemed to pack quite a bit of lime. The salsa was bold, and I appreciated it not seeming to have any salt at all. Look, it was like 2am when I went here so I can't recall all the details. This was my first time in. I was in the mood for a burrito from a "Mom and Pop" spot, no Chipotle today. I live near this place and I have yet to try it out. Today I took a chance and it was just okay overall, but I'm sure I will go back and give them another try. 1. The environment is cool and it has a Mom and Pop feel. The customer service was good and I didn't have to wait long for my food. 2. The Carne Asada Burrito I got was the size of my forearm. After I added Rice, Beans, Cheese, and Sour Cream. I'm from Oakland where we have excellent Mexican Food and the Best Burrito Trucks in the world so it's weird to me to have to add those things to a Burrito, but in Arizona that's the culture. 3. The Burrito wasn't rolled as tight as I like, and the taste of everything together once I mixed it a little with a fork was pretty good. I would recommend it to anyone that wanted a quick burrito to eat for lunch and have some left over for dinner. The next time in I think I'm gonna try a Carne Asada Torta. I dont know if im a fair judge of comida...i always get the same thing...beef tacos and/or rolled tacos. But its always,good. The green salsa is TRUTH and i mix it with the spicy red one. I absolutely do NOT recommend this place at all to anyone. I ordered a torta de lengua and noticed it was a bit off from the smell and taste I took a few bites of the half and made my brother try to see if it was just me he said it did taste off it had a really bad taste like coins and looked like it was old. A few hours later I became sick and was with diarrhea same with my brother I called the place to let them know that their lengua made me sick the nice person who did talk to me confessed that the meat is always left out without refrigeration and for hours, she then told me to speak with the manager and gave me her number. A few days after that I spoke with the manager Anahi and she was the most rude person I've ever spoken to, I was letting her know about me getting sick from the torta and she just kept asking why I ate it and why would I not just throw it away, she even said she wouldn't even feed it to her dogs so why did I eat it if it was off smelling. She was so rude about it I just wanted to let her know that she should be careful about leaving out meat without refrigeration for long periods of time but she kept insisting that they refrigerate the meat but I was told by her own worker that they don't keep it in the fridge. In the end she was just down right rude and I never want to eat there again I would stay far away from this place they have no consideration for their customers. While the other 2 were good, the fish taco was not. Come here a couple times a year when I watch the Angels in spring training. Been here about 6/7 times. What I order: Carne Asada plate cooked Medium (beans + rice+ corn tortillas) and/or chicken tacos. Carne Asada is seasoned well, not tough, two large thin pieces, easy to tear and put into a tortilla. Chicken tacos are loaded with juicy chicken. Beans and rice aren't out of this world but are delicious. Condiment Bar: very well taken care of, clean not all sloppy, 3 types of salsa ( I like the green one, not spicy, just good flavor), crisp cucumbers, fresh lime wedges, carrots, chips. Cleanliness: very clean and not cluttered. Everything is in order. You can see back into the kitchen, also looks clean and orderly. Staff: I have never seen them just sitting there chatting to each other or on their phones. They're always working! Wether it's re stocking, cleaning, etc... Other menu items: large selection to order. All your typical orders plus traditional ones like cabeza, lengua, adobadas, breakfast plates, chorizo, machaca, menudo, large delicious looking shrimp cocktail, and Mexican soda. All those items seem to be very popular. In fact, they've ran out of menudo when we've tried ordering it before. They have a drive thru as well. Price: very reasonable!
