The server was attentive but not overbearing, the ambiance was enjoyable, music not too loud. The patio provided one of the best views in the valley. Came here on a rec from a doctor buddy of mine and actually brought her to dinner here before I flew back to Houston. It's a great, quaint, little latin American joint. They have a great specialty drink menu with lots of interesting flavors. Shame I don't drink, they looked just amazing. It's small plate share style, at least what we had was. But the flavors? Man the flavors are amazing. They also have this little dessert they end up doing rotations on. It's sorta fried ice cream on a Mexican pastry. This occasion it was strawberry. Location: 4.5 STARS The location is great! The restaurant has multiple tables. We didn't need a reservation on a Wednesday night but it did start getting busy after 7:30. Parking is kinda limited up front. Not sure if you're able to park on the other side. Ambiance is kinda romantic with dark lightning. The music was top tier. They had on all the Latin bangers. Service: 5 STARS Our waitress was really nice, friendly and attentive. She checked on us multiple times and made suggestions to the menu and was very helpful with drinks. Food: 4 STARS the food was tasty but not everything we tried was worth coming back for. Elote: 4.5 STARS - great! Creamy, roasted! I really like the green sauce on the plate. Brussel sprouts: 3 STARS - we were warned that this was in salad form. It was a bit hard to eat because it was basically like shredded cabbage. It was also dry. We took our daughter and her husband for dinner last night for her birthday. Everything was flavorful and we enjoyed just sharing several items. Oh how I wanted to love this place. But no. Husband and I went for the first time to celebrate our birthdays. Were seated inside next to a family where the woman had a dog sitting on her lap at the table. The dog was wearing a "service animal" harness. For the next hour, the dog continued to sit in her lap and was panting. I mentioned my concern to our server and noted that a dog is not permitted to sit on a patron's lap INSIDE a dining establishment. If it were truly a service animal, it would be seated on the floor. The server said she "understood" and appeared to feel badly about the situation, but did nothing. This is a health code violation. As the family left, the woman carried the dog out of the restaurant, so clearly it is not a service animal protected by the ADA. Even after the family left, no manager came over to explain or offer an apology. Gross. read more

This is one of my most painful experiences at a restaurant. Let's start with the expectations: this was a birthday dinner event for my wife and her family and none of us have been there before and boy did I learn my lesson good. A group of 6 we had reservations in advance for a patio table. The food was so so for Latin American cuisine. Some items like the salmon tacos and mussels were on point, other items like the calabacitas were incredibly salty with an odd pesto base. The service was extremely awkward, none of us felt comfortable. When the bill came which was extremely expensive ~ $480 given we didn't even have alcohol and a couple of people had very small entrees, it was shocking to see that: 1. They charged for the birthday dessert when they said it would be complementary. 2. They automatically tagged 25% tip for a group of 6 people. I was astonished by both and took care of the bill vowing to never be back again. I've never had such encounters at some of the local nice restaurants like Maple & Ash, Ocean & Steak 44, Global Ambassador restaurants, etc. This was simply the most disappointing birthday event venue I ever chosen for a celebration. Awkward, expensive and weirdly rude with the automatic 25% tip when I'm such a great tipper to start with. On principle, 1 star is too much for this place. read more

Very good overall. Salsa trio-meh, have had better. My husband ordered a cocktail and it was just sweet on sweet. The good: we also had the Brussels sprout salad, it was excellent, the little bits of crunch and sweetness from the corn things and the dates made it great! The papas fritas dish was excellent! The green chorizo was delicious and not spicy at all. They were crispy and delicious . The carnitas empanada was my favorite! It was super crispy and fresh and the pickled red onions went great with it. I was in love with the freshness of the orange sauce! Service-we sat at the bar so it was quick and polite. They had 3 bartenders and a pretty large interior space that could hold a lot. The only big downside was a huge group came in that didn't have reservations and were all dressed in costumes. Vecina was great! With tapas and ordering many plates, I feel like you're bound to come across something you don't like very much, but we really enjoyed all our dishes. The pork chop was fantastic. It was cooked well, with a good crisp/char on the outside and I liked the sauce with it (though the pork chop itself was delicious so not needed). I'm not normally one for salmon in tacos but the dish looked popular online, so I had to try, and I'm glad I did! The salmon was SO tender and oily, which I like. As for the ceviche, I understand people's comments about the sauce being more curry like than ceviche. For me, I really like coconut and am not a huge fan of traditional ceviche, so I loved this dish! I actually dipped the chicken karaage in the ceviche sauce too. I'm a big fan of Japanese food so I was skeptical about seeing chicken karaage on this menu. This also did not disappoint! Very crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Liked the sauce on this dish a lot too. The service was pretty standard. Our waitress was friendly and they were very apologetic when our reservation was slightly delayed (the people before us stayed longer than anticipated). Dishes coming out were paced well and it was nice that they frequently refreshed plates and silverware due to the variety of foods we had. The restaurant itself was small but cute - a little intimate and dim lit spot for a date night. The toughest thing about Vecina is the tiny parking lot. Once you get that sorted, the rest was very solid. A friend recommended this place as his favorite tea in the city, which is a fairly lofty title, but I tried my best to not let is affect our expectations. We sat on the patio, which was casual, comfortable and quaint. For the most part the service was good, although the first round of drinks did take quite a while and the server didn't offer up a preference of water. My cocktail, which was very booze forward, was delicious as were the taco dishes and the guacamole. We got the pork belly taco and the salmon. Both good, although the pb was swimming in its sauce a bit. The tortillas were really well done. The only dish that wasn't my favorite was the whipped beans with crispy short rib. All the components were good, I just found it a little challenging to enjoy due to the plating. The stars of the show though, were the desserts! We had a dessert cocktail and that was OMG good and the banana bread was surprisingly yummy. I would just go back for that dessert cocktail. Kudos on that one. read more

Some friends told me about Vecina, saying "it's worth a visit," but the unexpected excellent quality creativity and taste of the food blew us away. The personable and great server, Blake, tried to describe it as Mexican-peruvian-spanish-american fusion...whaaa?! It's a nice smallish environment with a good sound system playing interesting Spanish influenced music, and I dunno, but we shared 5 small plates, highlighted by the white bean paste with short rib, and the salmon tacos...really nice blends of flavors. And for dessert try the banana bread! Also should mention that I really enjoyed my spicy marg, and had a glass of Spanish Cava (yay!) with dinner. So glad that Spanish wines are coming to America and that Vecina has a nice selection at fair prices! And yes, we had cocktails, wine and 5 shared courses for under $165! Vecina is definitely a spot I'd return to with friends or for date night! It's an elevated, modern, Latin American inspired dining experience. We dined in on a Friday night, and thankfully we're seated right away. The vibe was intimate and perfect for date night, yet there were also some families enjoying their meal there, too. We ordered the white bean purée, ceviche (MP was about $28), skirt steak tacos, and the carnitas empanada. All were delicious! My partner loved the white bean purée and tacos, while my favorites were the ceviche and empanada. I especially loved the the coconut leche de tigre and grilled pineapples that came with the ceviche. The plate had a balanced mix of fresh, herbaceous, subtly sweet, and tart. I also really loved the texture on the empanada - crispy on the edges, with super tender pork in the middle. Each bite was slightly sweet with mild and spicy salsas that complemented the flavor very well. Way to elevate a comfort food classic. I would order this as takeout if I wanted to treat myself in a weeknight after work. (Yes I know it's like 20-something dollars, but I don't care!!) We watch Checks Please on PBS and every week I look up the restaurants for gluten free options. Vecina had a separate GF menu w alot of options. I especially love tapas. We choose guacamole, mussels (beyond flavorful), chorizo potatoes, pork empanada, steak and pork belly tacos. I had a delicious gin gimlet and my husband had a beer, we ate on the patio and enjoyed the amazing weather. The service was incredible, my only complaint would be the items came out faster than we would have liked, I think next time I will order, eat and repeat plus we won't order so many things, we were beyond full by the time the tacos came out. This is a spot we often bring out of town guests too. The thing is - I like the appetizers not the entrees. We get the karaage, short rib, salsa trio, shrimp dish and guacamole. And always end with both the concha and banana bread We've had the elote, Brussels, tacos, empanadas, ceviche dishes and never enjoyed them. Our server, Alaina, was EXCEPTIONAL. While all of the items on the white bean dish were delicious on their own, I didn't care too much for it all together and the tortilla felt more like a pita bread than a flour tortilla.
