My cat woke up crying one day and I brought her in since it was Sunday and no one else was open. I was also desperate, she was very lethargic and wasn't standing on her own but she still was reaching out for me and squeezing my finger when I put it under her paw. When I came in the doctor automatically told me my cat was very critical. They were not able to help her. She then tells me while saying whatever is happening to my cat was something I was "brushing under the rug" I explained to her that my cat was still eating and drinking water up until that night before and I felt as if she didn't believe me. I also didn't like that she's telling me this in front of everyone. I felt humiliated as if she was blaming me for what was happening. She was telling me now they couldn't get an IV in her because of how dehydrated and was not reacting to anything, she was pretty much like she is going to die. When they took me into a private room to be with my cat before they put her down they automatically started talking the prices about cremation. I personally am very against cremation but in the moment was never given the option to not have her cremated. Under all the stress and emotions I was feeling as I'm holding the light of life die in my arms, I chose the package that would give me her ashes back but I was extremely upset at the thought that she was going to be cremated. I wish I would have other options but I live in the rural parts outside of Austin where I don't have anything nearby and unfortunately this was the only place that was less than an hour away from me. I hope I never have to come here. read more

More expensive than other ERs and be prepared to stay several hours because they're short staffed. We were charged $5000 (exactly ) with line items like "additional miscellaneous" and an absorbent amount of tests. The antivenom is more expensive here than any other ER. The tech helping our dog openly told us snake bites are their money maker and they bring in $250k/month on them. I'd try out another ER first and leave this as a backup option. read more

Long waiting periods, and unable to get blood from my cat took two tries, X-rays were confusing... no radiologist there to read results, was here from 11:25 to 3:54, and no treatment except fluids, anti nausea. Gave her two sedatives for all the tests to be done... do my cat is traumatized for sure. Didn't like vet who was very unclear , made me wait for literally hours, saw him twice. Outstanding, compassionate care! Upon arrival, vet had her hands on my dog in under 10 seconds, with support oxygen and meds soon after. Took 36 hours to stabilize my dog but team was highly competent, caring and transparent throughout the process. Loved the open room model - was able to stay with my pup the whole time. I came here to make sure my cat was okay on the night before Christmas Eve, as he just had a small amount of saliva on his lip. Most places were closed the next few days so I decided to come here. The staff was very kind and understanding with my pet. However, I paid $300 for them to feel-up my cat and misdiagnose him after initially insisting that they do $1.5k+ worth of tests. Decided to talk to a friend who's a vet instead. Turns out my cat was just dehydrated and teething. A few hydration supplements later, he's doing just great. We waited 3 hours at Central Texas Veterinary Specialty and Emergency, which was empty with the exception of one customer coming in an hour and a half after we had been waiting, with our dog in the back in a kennel not being seen before calling VEG to bring our pet there instead. We were seen immediately despite there being at least 5 other customers there, every staff member we encountered except one was so kind, and we were out within an hour. The facility was clean and an open space that let you be with your pet and see the staff assisting others as well as be with your dog so they're not kept in a kennel alone and distressed while they wait. They were gentle with our dog who is very anxious, and very helpful with after care instructions. Highly recommend that you take your pets here if you have an emergency. read more

Pros: It's wonderful that you can visit your pet any time of day when here. I often came by later at night to just watch movies and be with my cat so she was less stressed. We were also seen quickly and my cat was set up in an isolation unit since she was radioactive. Most of the vets and all of the vet techs we spoke with were compassionate and helpful and would bring water by and talk through my questions while we sat. It never felt frantic when there and has a calm environment. Cons: The prices here are INSANE. We had complications and severe dehydration from a radiation treatment at Sage Veterinary and the first trip was $5,200 for some scans, meds, and a two day stay. One appetite stimulant med that I already had from my vet for $20 was $98 from VEG. They sent her home and she relapsed a few days later which required another $4,300 stay. They wanted to transfer her to a vet with a specialist on Sunday who I had already called and confirmed they don't have the internist available on weekends, and while trying to take her home that day spent $25/hr on hospitalization until mid afternoon when they ran bloodwork. She could have been released that morning as I had kept asking them to confirm that she wouldn't be able to get the transfer and she was eating and drinking again. Several hours after coming home my cat developed a bubbly notes, watery eyes, and a wheezing cough that my regular vet thinks is possibly distemper and she is now hanging on a thread again, which she could only have gotten from VEG. **** To that end: that they put an unconfirmed case of parvo in the isolation unit next to her and when I brought up that there are strains that can infect cats or to ask if they had found out what the puppy actually had I was dismissed that it couldn't have been transmitted to her. Why would you put a sick animal with a respiratory disease next to another animal with a high white blood cell count and compromised immune system?? She could die now after all of this effort because you wouldn't separate these extremely ill animals?*** I did come in once when she didn't have any water in her bowl, and when I asked the doc on the phone later when she drank last since she was there for severe dehydration I was told that she might have knocked it over which is why it was empty. Nothing in her cage was wet. One of the vets also gave me conflicting information on her meds, when she had been eating/drinking, and the transfer. I do love that you can check in with your pets here but the fact that I spent 10k to get fluids, inconclusive tests, still don't really know what's wrong, and now my cat could die of something she picked up while there means I would be extremely reluctant to come back here. I really hope we don't have to. read more

From the moment I walked in, it was a great experience: the security guard who opened the door, the receptionist (Adam, maybe?), Dr. Nina, Amber, and the other clinicians (whose names I've forgotten) who helped me the entire way were all amazing. No one should pressure you to put your animal down without an exam and certainly shouldn't rush you. Also, some folks might like this open concept, but I certainly do not. There is no privacy and your animals are in open view of every other person and animal unless you are in a private room- the number of which are limited. VEG located in Austin, TX: This is the most amazing Animal ER Veterinary set-up! It is never a good thing to have to take your pet to the ER, but this Medical model is terrific! My dog and I were immediately brought back to their open ER setting and quickly greeted by the veterinarian and his team who got the history of my dogs injury. They assessed him and discussed the treatment plan and then started to work! Except fora quick needed xray, I never had to leave his side. There was always someone checking on us. There was a small procedure that was needed and I was able to be right there with my pal through the whole thing! I was/ am very impressed with this "OPEN" concept where you never have to leave your ill or injured pet. I also have to say that ER vet care is never cheap but the price was as reasonable as I could have anticipated and the time spent was also reasonable. Had an amazing experience with Dr. Smith and my vet tech at VEG! As soon as we got there, my dog started acting like nothing was wrong, but Dr. Smith saw through the act and diagnosed quickly and correctly. I also saw the entire team rallying around the other patients - including one bulldog with severe separation anxiety whom the vet techs took turns sitting by whenever they had a spare minute. When your pet suddenly needs a vet in the middle of the night or even during the day if your regular vet can't fit them in, it's good to know of an emergency vet hospital. We found this one recently in the dead of the night when our beloved older dog unexpectedly spiraled into an episode of extreme and inconsolable pain. Luckily they weren't super busy that night and they were able to get us in immediately. I say "us," because this hospital welcomes human companions to accompany their furry loved ones as they're treated in back. The treatment room is open with chairs for humans and pads and blankets for dogs to lie on the floor instead of an exam table. There are a couple of darkened private rooms and an alcove for pets and occasions that need that, and some cages along the walls to house animals if their humans have to leave them there for awhile. We stayed with our dog for several hours as the wonderful vet Dr Q and her team performed exams, ultrasound and an X-ray, along with an ultrasound guided needle biopsy. Everything was done carefully right in front of us and I was highly impressed with the vet's diligence and ability to diagnose and explain several serious issues that went undetected by our regular vet during two recent visits. Unfortunately the prognosis was not good. The cost of care is a huge consideration for most people, including us. This hospital sends people an estimate before beginning treatment, and it's expensive, for sure. An overnight stay will likely run you $2500 and you will wish you had pet insurance if you don't. We don't. We didn't opt for overnight, but the vet was supportive and sent us home with medications and instructions to keep her comfortable, which we were able to do. That gave us precious time with our beloved dog, even though we knew time was likely short; we had to bring her back a little over a week later because she declined rapidly and her pain came back. The vet, Dr Smith, and team who helped her transition and helped us with associated decisions were also kind and compassionate and made an awful situation easier for us all, including most importantly our beloved dog. We could tell each time that they genuinely care about the animals they treat. We are very grateful to them and are only deducting a star here because of the high cost. read more

I brought my cat in on Memorial Day weekend and they still got us in ASAP. This was a very nice experience. The staff is so nice and caring which helped my frustrating and stressful situation. The cost is not the easiest and you need to ask questions. Not every place will be as nice about cost questions but here was amazing. From personal experience if you are on a tight budget you need to pay attention to what you feel is really needed. The staffs job is to provide the best for your animal, and the best is not cheap. Wow, all I can say is VEG saved our hearts and souls when we had no choice and finally had to put down our 18 year old terrier, buddy, friend. We thought we were timing it right and were planning on having "at home" help when the time came, but life does not work out that way and he got worse very quickly and no mobile vets had open appointments. The vet we took him to earlier that day (no appointments were open at our vet either) tried every vein and could not get the IV in to administer the meds. It was horrific and added to his suffering. We were prepared to say goodbye to him and then wound up taking him home in more pain and stressed out by all the shaving of his legs and botched needle insertions. Awful. We were devastated and distraught because by this time it was after hours and he was suffering more. Our vet was closed as were all the other vets. We called our vet and got someone who was closing up the office that recommended Veterinary Emergency Group. I can't say enough nice things about Dena and Dr Novakoff. They had a quiet lovely beautiful little room in the middle of the emergency hubbub where we could sit with him on a couch while they got everything ready and we did paperwork. He stayed relaxed and as peaceful as we'd seen him all day. Dana assured me she would be able to get a vein without stressing him..and she did. Then he was returned to my lap for the rest of the procedure. He remained relaxed and then they administered the final meds. You would think an ER would be a horrific place to have to say goodbye, but it wasn't thanks to the little room and and the staff. There was even little cactus there for you to take home and plant AND Dena found the time to make a little index card of his footprints for us! We were given a choice as to whether we wanted to take hime home and we did for the night so the other dogs could see he had passed. We just didn't want to leave him anywhere alone. Then the cremation company we called (who were also fantastic) picked him up in the morning. I'll never be able to thank Dena and Dr Novakoff enough for being there in a time of need when there is suffering and hearts are breaking...but THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! read more

Pros: - Staff (aside from doctor on duty this day) were super nice and attentive as soon as I walked in the door. - hospital was clean and they have individual sections/tables/chairs so you can sit there with your pet. - Ensured my dog was comfortable while we waited - Didn't take too long for the doctor to come and provide feedback Cons: - Costs - $$$ (I feel the doctor added medication and other miscellaneous items to the quote that my pet didn't need) - Doctors communication/service: After expressing to the doctor the issue my dog was facing has happened a few years ago, so I know it was pancreatitis inflammation, she insisted we needed to run labs, etc to eliminate that as a possibility. Total cost was going to be 6k. I didn't feel what she recommended was truly needed. Once I reviewed the quote I pointed out what I believed my dog needed. At this point the doctor responded aggressively stating she knew what she was talking about and if I want to do the bare minimum for my dog then that's what she'll do and ended with "I guarantee you, you'll be back with her". I felt at this point, she truly didn't care about the situation. It was more so for the money. When I left, I was given "bare minimum" home instructions. Overall, this doctor needs an attitude adjustment, show some empathy, and try to understand the customers financial situation without making it seem like the customer just doesn't care about their pets health because they can't afford a 6k bill. Update on my dog: we brought her home with the "bare minimum", gave her fluids (not given by the doctor), and provided her with pain medication and monitored her throughout the day/night. Shes doing so much better and is back to the energetic pup I know. I saved myself little over 5k. read more

Waking up and not knowing you'd be finding yourself at 9pm in an Emergency Vet hospital is really unfortunate. What is fortunate was the fact these people treated us like family. They gave options, their sincerest regards in words and hugs, and especially hospitality. Taking the time to say goodbye to your cat is crucial because these are our babies/family members. With that being said we had to put down our sweet baby. Sitting in the room with my family we were given a button to hit whenever we were ready to say goodbye. We were given the time we needed to feel ok with letting go. This Vet establishment felt like home. Shoutout to the doctor and especially Mike for the help, the love, and the hospitality. Way better than any emergency vet place in Austin Texas that I've ever been to. They actually care and don't see dollar signs when you walk in the door. I love this place. We had to take our Yorkie there after our dachshund, became crabby, late at night and bit him in the face. We were so scared he was going to lose his eye. Central Texas Vet Hospital was full, and they recommended "VEG" and they were amazing. From the time we got in to Victoria and the Doctor caring for him (and from what we could see/ all the other animals,) top notch care. Treatments done in front of us, so we could see what was happening. They cared, took the time, we were seen fast. And they saved his eye. They use state of the art technology, kind, caring, and not expensive at all for what they did. No more CTVH / they are the best, VEG, vet emergency group, by the Target off S. Lamar. A staff that clearly loves animals and will do anything to save them. They let me stay by his side the entire time. My dog, Brazo could not recover from a shot given to him earlier in the day at a routine Vet visit. The team at VEG, Dr. Q, Nina, Lindsay, Corrinn, & Payton worked tirelessly and with such care to the end. We were greeted in the lobby by a veterinarian who immediately listened to the description of what our dog was experiencing. Our dachshund is a complicated case with several serious medical issues. Dr Connor Jacobson was up to speed quickly and we were brought into the open treatment space and given a comfortable spot to sit. We were impressed by the setup and able to be with our dog through the several hours we were there. Our baby is very anxious and having to send him off to the back somewhere has never sat well with us and is not good for him or his health. The entire staff was friendly, kind and efficient. Ranger had been to his own vet the day before and had full blood panels, but we did not have the results. Dr Connor was able to reach out directly to our vet, on a Saturday, and receive the results. Any other emergency room would have run their own tests and incurred additional expenses. I assume we were lucky that our vet was available to Dr Connor but we are so appreciative of that. Dr Connor had to read through a huge report to assess the situation and then created a plan. Ranger had an ultrasound, with my husband holding him, to be sure there was no internal bleeding. He received fluids, also while being held. We were sent off with a precise assessment, all the needed medication and thorough instructions. I highly recommend VEG for all your emergency needs. We will not hesitate to head there immediately for all the issues we know we are facing going forward with our ill baby. PS we were pleasantly surprised by the fee.....it was very very reasonable. read more

I had tried to go to another emergency clinic that kept me waiting for almost 2 hours in the middle of the night with no care and eventually they recommended VEG and I'm so glad I came to this place. They immediately took my dog in and started to evaluate & treat him. Everyone helped me feel calm by being so kind and attentive to him and explaining to me how everything would go with his treatment. We were able to stay together in a room with a pull out sofa bed over night, they gave us blankets and made the experience as comfortable as it possibly could be by having the option to stay with him while he was treated. First scary experience with my cat and as soon as I walked in through the doors, he was being taken care of. Immediately had nurses take a look at him and complete his triage. Dr. Cody worked really fast to get him checked out and had him set up for his procedure. Everyone explained everything to me very thoroughly. They let me stay by my cat's side the entire time- including during his procedure. All the nurses were so kind and delicate with my fur baby. They calmed my nerves significantly.
