First of all, they have a separate gluten free menu!! Unfortunately, I ordered wrong, but I would love to come back and try something new. I ordered mapo tofu, which is a fave of mine, but this dish was very different from what I was used to. No spicy red sauce, just a mild brown sauce with peas and carrots. There was also a seitan-like mock meat, which worried me, but they assured me it was gluten free. I had no reaction the next day, so that's good! No complaints for the miso soup Service was a little slow but the server was really helpful with my celiac questions!

Excellent Asian vegan cuisine with $15 lunch specials with large portions. Love that some are loaded with vegetables with minimum added sugar. Had the mango lassi, l13 and l14, and lobster rolls. Seated right away in this very quiet restaurant. Food came out quickly. Staff was attentive and ambiance is nothing special.

Been to this restaurant 5 times. Below are pro and con: Pro: lunch $14-$15 and dinner meals $17-$22 reasonable price All vegan Con: Tables are sticky. Has a film of dry grease Air was bad : very stuffy Minimum service Bathroom broken No AC for a 77 degree Food is never on the delicious side. Just tolerable. Like my mom's food is more delicious. Todays miso soup so salty. They don't put thoughts in their food and cleanliness. It's like they don't even care if business fail. 3 Times they rush us to finish dinner at around 8:30 because waiter had to go home. Restaurant closes at 9. Restaurant is mostly empty. Do they know why? Fix the problems!

If soup means slices of veggies mixed in a veg broth then I'm give up. in name of veganism you can't alter however you want. I was expecting a nice thick pumpkin soup, this is a big disappointment. Next comes steamed veggies.. guess simply half boil the veggies with pepper and your job is done. There is no need to add salt or little garlic to add flavor. I had to blend the soup and cook it more myself and cook veggies again in garlic to make it edible. This place is a joke. Money wasted.

Stopped by for lunch at this great Vegan Asian restaurant. I had the Eggplant String Bean lunch special $10.50 and it was delicious. Started with a miso soup and the lunch plate of sautéed eggplant with string beans with rice and also includes sweet potato and a vegetable roll. I'd like to try another item but I may get the same thing next time.

I was craving more vegetables and tofu in my life after eating out a few too many times this past week and felt that I needed a little bit more green in my diet. I came to Ginger Root for take out on a weeknight. Ginger Root is located on the UES and is a specialty vegan Asian restaurant. It looks like the menu is mostly Chinese dishes but they also have some classic Thai dishes. They had tofu and saitan as meat alternatives. I ordered in the restaurant and waited for about 15 minutes for my food. I got the Teriyaki Tofu which comes with steamed broccoli, brown rice, and miso soup. The miso soup was pretty tasteless in my opinion. The Teriyaki Tofu had a sweet flavor and I liked the crispy edges of the tofu. The dish is served over a bed of bean sprouts. I was pretty surprised I finished the whole dish! Overall good vegan Asian place on the UES.

Pros: -Fully vegan menu -Lots of seating -Food is quick to come out -Staff seems to be passionate about veganism -Quick takeout pickup Cons: -Some of the appetizers were hit or miss (lots of items seems like they were frozen then fried) (overly saucy to mask the quality) -waiter kept taking plates and sauces away before we were finished using them

The sauce was spicy & you could enjoy the sweetness as well. The chicken always tender and juicy. The broccoli was steamed fresh. The spring rolls we a little over cooked for my liking but had a great flavor. The restaurant is themed but I a very taste way with paper lanterns hanging from the ceilings The staff was responsive and kind. Definitely would come here again.

There was a wait list, tons of reservations, and the whole place was hustling and bustling. The food smelled amazing, and the ambiance was lively and fun overall. We were excited to eat! We were walk-ins, so I appreciated that they were able to get us in. The hostess was running a very tight ship - very "no BS"/no nonsense ... and hey, I get it, it was crazy, but at times it erred a bit unnecessarily rude? It just left me feeling a bit off, but not the end of the world. Food-wise, we tried a lot of different things. The highlight was honestly the scallion pancakes. They were DELISH! Not too doughy, not too dry, and the vinegar dipping sauce was amazing (I know it's just the standard vinegar but dang it's so good). It was a classic really well executed. The steamed pork dumplings were also quite yummy. For our mains, we got the garlic baby bok choy, beef chow fun, and kung pao chicken. The beef chow fun looked amazing and we had heard really good things about it, but unfortunately it was a little dry and lacked flavor... just sort of bland? We ended up pouring some of the vinegar sauce over it, which helped, but I was a little disappointed because it looked so good. The baby bok choy was really loaded it up with garlic chunks and was also yummy and a good portion. It was juicy and had a great texture, but my only note was that it felt like it needed just a little more seasoning or salt? Overall, though, it was good. The kung pao chicken was INTENSE. I knew it'd be spicy, but truthfully it was my first time ever trying it and it was a tad difficult to eat without rice. The chicken thighs had a texture that felt a little gummy to me? I wished the chicken had been a bit more browned too. The peanuts and veggies rocked, but the sauce and chicken were huge misses for us. I typically would never send anything back, but my friend insisted as it was tough to enjoy. They did take our dish from the table... but then a manager brought it back and was a bit condescending towards us saying they didn't do that and everyone knows it's a spicy dish... which, I'm trying to be fair about because he didn't know it was my first time, but it just again felt unnecessarily rude. I hate wasting food, so we kept it and took it home rather than let it go to waste. I just thought the whole interaction was a little strange. Truly - I wasn't really looking to get something for free. We just didn't enjoy the dish and were trying to figure out what our options were and it basically felt like he just came over to make us feel small instead of problem solving together. Weird. I'm always one for second chances so I'm hoping to try it again, but I would highly recommend making a reservation to ensure a calmer experience.

They're not cheap, but we thought they were good enough to justify the trip all the way downtown to Chinatown. Sautéed Lobster with Sticky Rice, S.P., around $50: Somehow, the lobster and sticky rice combination works extremely well. The juices from the live lobster soak into the sticky rice, giving it a rich, savory flavor that reminds me of Spanish paella. It's a very satisfying dish. Live Fish, Fillet with Scallion, S.P., around $50-$100: Exceptionally fresh, and the fish was filleted very well. The preparation was simple enough to let the freshness and natural flavor of the fish come through. I would come back for these dishes. Congee Village may be expensive now, but good for special occasions to taste fresh and well prepared seafood.

We had to wait for about 10 minutes and got our table for two upstairs. My wife was craving the lobster sticky rice so that's what we came for. We added the rice roll casserole and the mushroom with pea shoot leaves. The food took a few minutes to get to us but was overall ok. Nothing mind blowing but it scratched the itch. The service, however, sucked. They gave us another table's congee which we informed them we didn't order. And after our food arrived, we never saw the waitstaff again, until our check. I couldn't even get a refill on my water. And when the manager gave me my check she pressured me to give them the tips in cash and not charge it. I said fine but truthfully I tipped them more than they deserved.
