Here is what I got: Singapore noodles- YUM, second time I've gotten this, would get again! Basil chicken with sugar snaps - YUM, this is my favorite, would def get again Mooshu veggies- my parents liked this a lot Fried king mushroom - yum would get again Mapo tofu- got twice bc I thought I didn't like it much, it wasn't bad but other places are much better . A local mom and pop owned vegan, gluten free (select items) and vegetarian haven in the hood. Rare find with authentic Cantonese style cooking methods and seasoning. Asian fusion variety on the menu so there's definitely something for everyone. Been here a few times already for dinner with a friend and we always try to sample something new. The seitan skewers were fun and you don't miss the meat. It was quite hearty. I personally love and recommend the pumpkin soup! Most dinner entrees come with soup so do ask for the pumpkin if it's available. The spinach dumplings were tasty but a tad over steamed. The dough fell apart when we tried to pick it up. That shouldn't be. My friend recommended the cold green noodles with peanut sauce. For the peanut fan, you'll enjoy it a lot. As for entrees, I thoroughly enjoyed the vegetarian duck and the vegan black pepper beef with mushrooms. Both come with green veggies and the underlying sauce is oyster sauce when they stir fry it. A really nice vegan place with great food, healthy portions and fair prices. I stopped here on a trip to Manhattan, as it was close to my hotel and all vegan. Everyone on staff was super friendly, I really liked the vibe. My favorites were the general tso's chicken and bean curd skins. Soup came with the meal and I added on some steam buns that were delicious too. I felt like I got a lot of food for my money, especially considering this is NYC. First of all, they have a separate gluten free menu!! Unfortunately, I ordered wrong, but I would love to come back and try something new. I ordered mapo tofu, which is a fave of mine, but this dish was very different from what I was used to. No spicy red sauce, just a mild brown sauce with peas and carrots. There was also a seitan-like mock meat, which worried me, but they assured me it was gluten free. I had no reaction the next day, so that's good! Since my last review nearly two years ago, I've been liking the food much better. We still only go for lunch every 1-2 weeks, but I've been loving the mango "chicken" to the point of obsession. While the decor is dark and dreary, and every lunch comes with a "pumpkin" (I think it's some kind of squash), it's really hard to find vegan places with such tasty, meaty main courses (I'm not vegan or vegetarian). We like any dish with the meat-like flavorful ingredients they use (I wish I knew what it is, because I'd like to cook it at home--definitely not tofu), and we also like the Singapore noodle dish a lot. I do wish they'd get a better salad dressing--it looks like the orange colored stuff served in most Japanese restaurants, but it doesn't taste as good (I think it's carrot based, but it's a little funky, maybe fermented). So despite all these negatives, I really do enjoy Ginger Root as a vegan option and hope it stays in biz. it's never busy--maybe they do a lot of takeout or dinners? Excellent Asian vegan cuisine with $15 lunch specials with large portions. Love that some are loaded with vegetables with minimum added sugar. Had the mango lassi, l13 and l14, and lobster rolls. I will list as Pro and Cons~~ Pro: 1- i love that they are all vegetarian, all vegan as i am one and it is in my neighborhood. I love that their lunch prices are reasonable. I love that they put water pitchers in fridge until customers sit at the table. Con: 1 - I don't love that a lot of their foods are processed veggie meats and the chef doesn't add too much more flavor to it. 2- I hate their sticky tables and extremely dark lighting. Very hard to read the menu. 3- I also don't like half of their higher prices on entrees and dim sums and appetizers. The prices are similar to a higher end restaurant in the area. 4- Their restaurant ambiance and food dishes and quality are down to early, and so i feel that their prices should be also more down to earth. 5- The owners just sit there and play with their phones and talk to each other when they can use the time to clean up the stick tables and etc. 6- on their payment machine, they put an 18% to 22% on both the food and the taxes. Why should we pay tip on taxes? Can someone tell them to fix it. We were in a hurry to leave today. It is really odd that they want minimally 18% tip but the service is very basic like taking our order and the bring the dishes. If soup means slices of veggies mixed in a veg broth then I'm give up. in name of veganism you can't alter however you want. I was expecting a nice thick pumpkin soup, this is a big disappointment. Next comes steamed veggies.. guess simply half boil the veggies with pepper and your job is done. There is no need to add salt or little garlic to add flavor. My boyfriend and I went to Ginger Root before a spa appointment nearby. Otherwise, it's not a place I would have gone, as it's sort of off the beaten path, far away from any tourist attractions. There was a bit of confusion as to the opening time, as some signs say 11:00, while others say 11:30, but we did get in shortly after 11:00. We both ended up getting lunch specials, which come with a decent miso soup, a nice spring roll, brown rice, and a slice of pumpkin. I got a soy protein dish that came with pea pods, while my boyfriend got a seitan dish with kale. They were both pretty good. And the price was also really good. I came to Ginger Root for take out on a weeknight. Ginger Root is located on the UES and is a specialty vegan Asian restaurant. It looks like the menu is mostly Chinese dishes but they also have some classic Thai dishes. They had tofu and saitan as meat alternatives. I ordered in the restaurant and waited for about 15 minutes for my food. I got the Teriyaki Tofu which comes with steamed broccoli, brown rice, and miso soup. The miso soup was pretty tasteless in my opinion. The Teriyaki Tofu had a sweet flavor and I liked the crispy edges of the tofu. The dish is served over a bed of bean sprouts. Ginger Root has quickly become a staple in my family. It's a great spot for a healthy lunch or dinner, and if you don't feel like going out they have super duper fast delivery. It's usually at our door less than half an hour after we place the order, even though we live half a mile away. Favorite dishes are the Black Pepper Seitan, Smoked Teriyaki Seitan, the Fisherman Soy Protein, and the Eggplant String Bean. I can't say enough about the eggplant, y'all. They're the little Japanese eggplants and they're cooked til they're buttery soft and absolutely delicious; perfectly complemented by the snappy string beans and not overwhelmed by the mellow brown sauce. Entree portions are large and all come with delicious brown rice (which has some sort of bean in it too!) and miso or salad. Opt for the miso soup, which is flavorful and has lots of seaweed, rather than the salad, which is just a handful of romaine with dressing. For a hearty winter soup, the hot & sour is fantastic. It's thick and a little spicy, with lots of mushroom and bamboo shoots in it, unlike the thin soup you get at your typical Chinese take out spot. There are quite a few entrees on the sweet end, which we don't love, but maybe others are into that. I'm looking at you, Sesame Soy, Citrus Soy, and Mango Soy. Asian dishes prepared vegan - done really well. Nothing too saucy or fried. Dishes are flavorful and innovative. Tried the homemade ginger ale and mango lassi. The lassi tastes as thick and delicious as the real one (for the non-vegan who've had and may prefer the traditional version). The crispy soy protein and the tofu skin wraps were similar in that they were both fried. Both were accompanied by sauces that were orange and personally I didn't feel complemented the dishes they were paired with. The sauce for the crispy soy protein was sweet and sour-ish and tasted off. I requested hoisin sauce which improved the flavor of the crispy soy protein, which definitely needs a sauce otherwise it's quite dry. The crispy soy protein are like vegan chicken nuggets and the tofu skin wraps like fried spring rolls. The cold green tea noodles were light and refreshing ..Subtle on green tea flavor and hopefully high on antioxidants! The basil soy protein I thought would be Thai style however the makeup was different - I thought the protein should've been minced and the dish was quite saucy. The orange seitan was good as long as I got the pieces not overly doused in the gelatinous sauce. Bibimbap was a good choice and very flavorful as long as it's mixed well. For dessert, the crispy fudge brownie is excellent as was the agave-sweetened coconut-based organic chocolate hazelnut ice cream. Came here with a friend for dinner. Seating is kinda (but not very) limited so I don't think this is the best place to go to if you have a big group. I also don't think this is the greatest place to go to on a first date (maybe unless you are vegan haha). Also the music was from Studio Ghibli!! Great music choice. We were hungry so we ordered Singapore mai fun (which comes with miso soup or green salad), General Tso's soy protein (which comes with brown rice), and Ginger Root macro bowl. I'm not vegan but I thought everything we ordered was pretty good. I didn't miss meat or dairy at all while eating. My only complaint is that the portion size of the General Tso's was kinda small for $16 even though it did taste pretty good. There is a dessert menu but we didn't get anything.
