This place is a hidden gem. My entire family has come here for years and it is worth the trip from Long Island every single time. Their green tea noodles and all of their seitan dishes (sweet and sour, general tso, orange, etc.) are two things that are so tasty, every other restaurant's version tastes subpar to me. My mom also loves the pumpkin soup and the mango rolls. Simon and his wife are the sweetest and most accommodating ever. I order delivery from here way too often because they're literally the best! The food is delicious and I also love that the delivery is super fast and almost always arrives before the estimated drop off time. The delivery guys are always very courteous too. The jap chae, soy protein chicken nuggets and peanut butter cake are my current favorites, but every time I try something new, I end up loving it, so I really don't think you can go wrong. One small detail that I really appreciate is that they cut a little vent on the container for the soy nuggets so they don't steam and get soggy during delivery. They're always nice and crispy when my order arrives. So many restaurants don't take this extra step and it really shows that the staff at Ginger Root actually care about the food they're preparing. I was walking by and saw the pretty sign that said vegan in lights. They just opened 3 months ago. I went over and checked out the menu. It looked so delicious. I wanted everything, literally. a pretty Chinese woman came to the table. There was a bit of a language barrier but that made it all the more enchanting. I got the Thai coffee which was super good and tasted just the way it should have. Then I got general Taos Setan not spicy with sweet & sour soup that was Amazing! And Coconut rice. The coconut rice had such authentic Asian flavor I truly felt like I was in a cafe in Thailand. The General toes came with broccoli and battered I think with a wheat gluten and a brown sauce that was fabulous. They also serve wine & beer. The side salad is very delicious. I'm not quite sure what the dressing is, but it adds a very zesty lemon-ginger orange citrus burst of flavor to the leaves! A very bright and refreshing light dish. Normally I hate salads because of how bland most restaurants flavor them, but this place really hit the dressing on the mark without overpowering the rest of the meal. The highlight of my dinner was probably the Satay Tempeh. It was really crispy and filling, and the drizzled sauce accompanying the dish was lightly sweet and delicious, adding a lot of seasoning to the leaves underneath. For my main course I had the sautéed vegetables with tofu. I ended up liking the Tempeh much more though, if I stop by again I might just end up eating that. This time I got satay tempeh ( very good - because I can't make good tempeh for my self) $6. It gives me protein and full fullfillmesss. I also got spinach shuai mai. I came here with my cousin on Friday night for dinner around 8pm. The place was dead which made me a little hesitant at first but it has a good rating on yelp so we decided to try it. My cousin is vegan so this restaurant seemed like the perfect choice since both of us could find something to eat here. We were seated immediately. The place is very casual. The tables aren't set and the decor is very minimalistic aka hardly anything in the walls and the tables have nothing on them besides a tiny vase with a few carnations (not even salt and pepper). Food wise: we started with the edamame, pan Friend vegetable dumplings, and an avocado ginger salad. The edamame has hardly any salt on it so it was very plain. The Friend vegetable dumplings were tasty but the dipping sauce had a weird after taste and the avocado salad was a large portion but nothing special. Just lettuce with a sliced avocado on top and dressing in the side. The dressing was ginger carrot so it had a little different taste then the regular ginger dressing. So I didn't love it either. For our entrees, we ordered the steam vegetables with brown sauce and the spicy smoked seitan. Both entrees came with the option of a salad or soup. We both ordered the miso soup. The soup was very tasty. Probably the best thing out of everything. The steamed vegetables with the brown sauce was a good portion for just veggies but the brown sauce wasn't great. It had a different taste than any of the other brown sauces I've had before. The spicy smoked seitan looked like a boneless spare ribs. It was very Smokey and a little chewy. Not my favorite and I wouldn't get it again. Service: the service was okay. He was very attentive when we first sat down and taking our order but then he didn't really come over and we had to wave him down for a knife. He also took our plates away while we're still eating which was very awkward and annoying. I don't think I'd go back but maybe for the miso soup! read more

I'm giving Ginger Root five stars because this as good as the restaurant can be given their niche and clientele. Admittedly, a pan-Asian vegan spot caters to a very small sector of the population, even in NYC. When was the last time you, as an omnivore, considered Chinese and thought vegetables would be a good option? And who among you, vegans, considered any type of Asian cuisine with its mixture of meat as the flavoring in every dish? I imagine Ginger Root gets its concept from Buddhist cuisines, but its execution is in an all American neighborhood, meaning they try to cater to the taste of the average Joe. To me, their dishes are a tad on the sweet side, but I might be a standard deviation or two away from the taste palette of the average American. Note - this is easily remediable at the time of ordering by customizing the dish. For those that are curious, I've had two of their dishes - the Smoked Teriyaki Seitan had a satisfying tear and texture. I had their Black Pepper Seitan on the snowiest day in January 2018 (the day the schools closed down) and was so pleasantly surprised by the freshness of their vegetables. Overall, I feel like I can jump like LeBron after finishing one of their wholesome, delicious meals. read more
