Besides me at Veggie Grill last Thursday and Justin Bieber visiting the Playboy Mansion, who else had THAT conversation last week? Every once in a while, Veggie Grill has Virgin Day. It's like a Buy-One-Get-One (BOGO) offer except one person has to be a first-timer and the other has to be experienced. ... Reminds me of high school for some reason, but I digress ... My wife was my gentle partner to guide me into the unknown world of uninhibited vegetarianism. We got a Santa Fe Crispy Chickin' Sandwich (and yes, that's how they spell it cause its not chicken) which features what VG calls Crispy Fried Chillin' Chickin'. It comes with Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Avocado, and Southwestern Spiced Vegan Mayo. It was a flavorful sandwich that didn't exactly taste like meat, but still tasted good. I'd recommend it for any other virgins out there. We also chose the V-Burger and its Marinated and Grilled Veggie-Steak which comes with Pickles, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion and Chipotle Ranch. It wasn't the worst burger I ever had, however, it definitely didn't have the right texture and was bland compared to the other sandwich. Later, my friends told me we should have tried the Portobello Burger instead. Oh us silly virgins getting ourselves into things we don't understand ... For sides, we picked the uber-recommended Sweetheart Sweet Potato Fries (with Chipotle Ranch sauce). To be quite frank, I expected something bold and memorable given the hype surrounding these fries and was disappointed like most virgins are when the real thing doesn't come close to our imagination. Still the fries were great compared to the Mac n Cheese which was just kind of icky while lacking the right texture or flavor of cheese. We washed it all down with a Strawberry Lemonade and a Fresh Lemonade. I liked the strawberry take on a classic. Service was friendly and patient. I brought one of my grazing friends here after running amok at the Disney and Mattel outlets. I got a veggie burger and sweet potato fries, she got some type of wrap. Now, these were good, her's might have even approached great, but my burger was cold. So I walked it back to the kitchen thinking they'll throw it back on the grill, get it toasty, and I'll be eating in a few minutes. They did not. They made a whole new lukewarm burger. And took plenty of time to do so. Now, the fries were hot both times. Hmmm. I gave up. I started giving up when I put in my order and asked about the sauce or dressing on the burger. The register person says "there's a ranch chipotle sauce" and I tell her not to put that on my food, I do not eat spicy stuff. I asked if they had anything else that I could get on the side and I was told "no." My lukewarm burger was served with a side of the chipotle blend ranch that I couldn't eat. ***Veggie Grill's non-meat and non-dairy American bar and grill cuisine can be satisfying at initial bite, but the meat and dairy substitutes really show themselves the more you eat here*** Veggie Grill is a great spot for once meat eaters who have converted into vegetarians and vegans. Veggie Grill's concept is to take popular American bar and grill items like nachos, buffalo wings, burgers, buffalo chicken sandwiches, and fajitas and then turn them into non-meat and non-dairy options while maintaining the flavors and textures true to those dishes. And I think they pull it off to a certain extent. Their nachos feature very crunchy corn chips, which are topped with a non-meat taco blend, melted VG-cheese, mashed avocado, soy cream, and jalapenos. In some ways, I like Veggie Grill's version more than what you get at a lot of the ballparks (where I typically eat this snack). While a lot of ballpark nachos feature very bland cheese, the cheese at Veggie Grill has a good flavor and it has a good spiciness when coupled with the jalapenos. The mashed avocado and soy cream are both refreshing and the taco blend has a savory meat-like flavor as well as a kind of meat-like texture. After several bites though, it became more and more apparent that I was not eating meat or dairy. The VG-cheese had a graininess to it and the flavor of the soy cream was almost too pronounced. It reminded me of the vegetarian hot dogs they serve at the suites in the Staples Center. When you are hungry and you get that first bite, it is enjoyable and you really marvel at how they have created a similar flavor and texture with their seasoning techniques. However, once you grab that second vegetarian hot dog, you really start to notice how you are eating a fake interpretation of it (of course, I probably would not enjoy a second order of hot dogs at any ballpark regardless of what it was made of). This Veggie Grill has the same clean and modern decor of all the other Veggie Grill locations; this Veggie Grill also offers outdoor dining. Prices are not too bad. You are probably going to pay around $10-$14 per person, but the food is filling here. Service was good and quick. In terms of vegetarian and vegan dishes, I have always been a fan of seeking out restaurants that can take naturally non-meat and non-dairy ingredients and turn them into satisfying flavor and texture combinations while keeping the ingredients true to themselves (as opposed to using these "fake" meat concoctions); still, for people who used to eat meat, Veggie Grill's meatless interpretation of classic bar and grill food might definitely satisfying their meat cravings (or allow them to relive nostalgic memories of their favorite childhood dishes). Thanks to awesome Yelper Michelle T., I knew to sign up my dad for a free birthday meal at The Veggie Grill, and today we all came here for lunch to use it! At first my (rabid meat loving) parents were skeptical of the vegetarian/vegan menu, but by the end of lunch they were loving it. This is why: Dad: Sweetheart fries with chili ($4.25 + $2.50) - a huge serving of sweet potato fries with vegetarian chili, onions and sour cream on top. THIS was the best thing we ordered today! GREAT fries, good chili, YUM together! Mom: Small chili bowl ($2.95) - my mom LOVED the beans in this chili, and the crispy multi-seed lavash crackers that came with it. Sister: Sweetheart fries ($4.25) - the chipotle ranch dressing that came on the side with these fries was SO YUM that I could have put it on every single thing on the table! Bf: Papa's Portobello, wrap style, add mac & cheese ($8.50 + $2.50) - this portobello wrap was fresh and delish with crunchy veggies and that awesome chipotle ranch dressing. The vegan mac & cheese had good texture, but as with most vegan cheeze it lacked something. I won't fault Veggie Grill for this though - making a good vegan cheeze cheesy is tough work! Me: VG Cheeseburger, El Dorado Style, add mac & cheese ($9.95 + $2.25) - jalapenos, sauteed onions and ketchup with pickles and onions and lettuce on top of a veggie burger patty with cheeze. All by itself, the straw lemonade was DELISH too - not overly sweet, or overly tangy, it was definitely refreshing and light, with a real strawberry flavor. Met a friend here for lunch and this place was packed during lunch. The restaurant serves all vege dishes, including the meats (all made of soy protein?). I ordered the Thai Peanut Salad, which was a bed of very crisp lettuce, carrots, red cabbage, red onions, and a few other veggies. After my yoga class at Yogaworks on Saturday, I was ready for some grub! Michael, my future brother-in-law, told me that I may like The Veggie Grill, so I headed there to check it out... he was right on! While I'm not vegetarian, I like my veggies, and this place delivers! I had a tough time deciding what to order because everything looked pretty damn good. I went with the "Bali Bliss" sandwich (Indonesian styled tempeh, sauteed and grilled, lettuce, tomato, chipotle ranch) and added avocado. I splurged and also added a side of "Sweetheart Fries" - I cannot resist sweet potato anything! I like the fast casual concept - I ordered and paid at the counter, took my # to a table and sat down... minutes later - my food was delivered with a smile! The only complaints that I have are these: 1 - if you list avocado as an add-on ingredient, give me avocado - don't give me a scoop of guacamole. If you're going to do that, call it guacamole on the menu! 2 - there was some kind of relish on the sandwich that wasn't listed on the menu either... So many great options for lunch near my work. Many of my veggie friends said I should try The Veggie Grill. So many interesting options to choose from (salads, sandwiches, bowls, appetizers and tacos.) The line moved very quickly so I needed to make a decision. For a side dish we ordered the Crispy cauliflower with spicy orange dipping sauce. It's just like orange chicken but instead of it all ready mixed together, you just dip the cauliflower in the sauce. This is especially helpful so if you have leftovers they do not get soggy. For my main dish I ordered the Crispy Chickin' Plate. Faux fried chicken on a bed of cauli-mashed potatoes covered in porcini mushroom gravy. It also came with kale salad topped with a nice vinaigrette. "Oh my!" 5 stars is not easily earned by me. But Veggie Grill, I love you. You make being vegan easy and you win over the hearts of many carnivores. This was my 3rd visit to Veggie Grill, but my first visit to this location. I went today because they were having a promotion for Earth Day for first time Veggie Grill patrons to have a comped entree when accompanied by a Veggie Grill veteran patron. Who really cares if you're really a Veggie Grill virgin or not... just say that you are so you can get free food! What was even better was that not only did the cashier comp my friend's entree, but she actually comped the side he ordered with it too! SCORE! And even better, she comped the more expensive meal of the two! DOUBLE SCORE! My friend and I split the bill and it came out to $8/person for an entree, side, and drink (as opposed to about $15/person without promotion). My friend and I were here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon and the place was packed! (most likely because of the Earth Day promotion). We ended up sitting outside, but luckily they had the heat lamps on since it was a bit gloomy and chilly outside. Today, I got the Bayou chicken sandwich with a side of steamed kale and my friend the Papa's Portobello with a side of sweetheart fries (aka sweet potato fries). The Bayou chicken was deeee-lish! Their soy chicken is good, not dry, and has great texture... blacken it with cajun spices and you've got a great kick of flavor in that vegan sandwich! The steamed kale was okay... I do prefer the fries, but I was trying to be somewhat healthy with my choices. The side of kale isn't anything fantastic, in my humble opinion, but it's something refreshing if you don't want fried foods. It's not overly cooked and soggy, but still has some nice body to it, drizzled with some dressing. The portobello sandwich, as reported by my friend, had an interesting texture and I quote, "does not make me miss meat at all." The sweetheart fries are never disappointing. Always with the perfect amount of crisp and that side of their chipotle ranch sauce is amazing! AMA-ZA-ZING! Today I tried out their Hawaiian Tea, sampled a sip... which was okay.. a bit bland. Hey, only 30 calories per serving. But their peach iced tea was even better... lightly sweetened and only 10 calories per serving. I decided to make an Arnold Palmer with the peach iced tea and regular lemonade... mmMMmm. In the past visits, I've had their Sante Fe Crispy Chicken sandwich which still remains to be my favorite thus far. Anything deep fried always tastes good! I've also had their Chipotle BBQ burger, which was good and is one of my friend's favorite as well. Veggie Grill has definitely become one of my favorite American vegetarian restaurants, alongside with Native Foods. Who knew that when I was signing up to be on their email list (so I could get a free meal birthday coupon), that they'd also send me emails on special promotions like on Earth Day? For my free meal, I ordered: - Chop-chop chef salad (reg. $9.50) with chopped romaine, quinoa, tempeh, veggie-steak, chillin' chickin, green onion, roasted corn salsa with chipotle ranch dressing. - Fountain drink. If you're not as concerned about your weight, make sure to order their sweet potato fries (or get a friend to order them and then steal half the bowl. Sorry Calvo!). A calorie breakdown, in case you wanted to know: Chillin' Chicken - 120 Tempeh - 213 Veggie Steak/Burger - 140 They also have an incredible variety of lemonades and iced teas you can use to make the perfect Arnold Palmer. DEFINITELY sign up for their mailing list. They offer a great promotion for your workplace, called "Veggie Day". As long as you respond quickly, you can get up to 30 free lunches for you and your coworkers. These lunches include a half sandwich (Santa Fe Crispy Chickin'), a small salad (Baja Fiesta, amazing!), and a slice of carrot cake. I had about 10 slices of cake left at the end and was stuffing my face with them for weeks to come. BEST. Carrot Cake. EVAR! The downsides: - Not a fan of their tempeh, but it was also the first time I tried it, so I don't think it's Veggie Grill's fault. - A little overpriced for food that satiates your hunger for 3... 4 hours max. I'm a meat eater. Like I'll eat steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But since I'm down for anything new, when a vegetarian friend suggested this place for lunch, I was psyched. I've only been to a veggie place like one other time in my life. I don't do it on purpose, I just don't usually hang out with vegetarians enough to go to veggie-only places. It's in the new plaza at El Segundo and if you've never been there, just because you see a store from afar doesn't meant that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Whoever designed the lot and the plaza was making swirly marks on their blueprints. Whatever. Anyway, the restaurant itself was kind of behind YogaWorks and conveniently located next to an Active store. There was a short line, but we got in pretty quickly. The place was bright and airy and wasn't small, but wasn't big. You take a number and sit down. We sat outside, but the area outside has room maybe for like 10 - 15 people with like a few small tables. I had the Santa Fe Chickin Sandwich, which was great, with a small side salad for an additional $1.95 with the citrus vinegarette. The salad had couscous on it, which I'm normally not a fan of, but it was a great combo. My friend got the Bali Bliss with avacado, which she really liked. My "chicken" sandwich was awesome, and went well with the order of Sweetheart Fries we shared. I normally don't like sweet potato fries or can't eat too many of them, but they were pretty light and I didn't feel like how I usually feel after downing McDonald's fries. I had a lemonade too, which wasn't anything to write home about, so I probably could've saved the $2. Everyone including the cashier, the person who brought our food, and the person who bussed our table, was super friendly, but not fake friendly. We went early, around noon, on a weekday, and we beat the crowd. I can see this place being pretty crowded for lunch on the weekends with men and women in track suits with their dogs. It was so good, I already told some friends about it and it might become a normal lunch place. Like Curry House is for me. It was so good that I considered converting to vegetarianism. Of all the vegetarian restaurants I've tried lately (and I've been to a few around South Bay now), The Veggie Grill is absolutely my favorite so far! Everything about this place is fantastic! It's a quick diner-type atmosphere (see my photos of the inside) with an eclectic mix of 80s pop, 90s soft-rock and light contemporary hip-hop or R&B music piped in at a pleasant listening level to keep the environment lively. It must make the cashiers and wait staff happy, as they're all very nice and helpful to those unfamiliar with veggie dining. For the very moderate prices, you get some of the freshest-tasting, most creative vegetarian dishes I've had -- and all are finished with gourmet-style care. These people have either been trained very well or really enjoy making good-looking plates (see my photos). Don't let this description fool you, though. It's not a fancy diner. It's a unique blend of healthy fast-food with fine-dining presentation. So far, I've had a cup of tortilla soup, the Bayou Chickin' burger with a side of Steamin' Kale and a entree order of the All Hail Kale salad with blackened chickin'. Everything is soooooo good! Granted, the fluffy texture of their chickin' protein creation betrays its true non-meat nature, but it is still very good and satisfies my need for meat-chewiness (I'm not a vegetarian). But the kale. Oh, the kale. I don't remember if I've even had kale before I ate here, but I'm now trying to figure out how to make these kale dishes at home. I've enjoyed collard greens for a while, but I think now I like kale even more! I wish I could make and eat kale salads like this anytime rather than the lettuce stand-by, which has become so boring. The Steamin' Kale side is even better, in my opinion, than the All Hail Kale entree salad. Maybe it's the ginger-miso dressing and sesame seeds of the Steamin' Kale that I prefer over the ginger-papaya vinaigrette and corn salsa of the latter, but I wish they had an entree version of the former. Oh my love. I would come here at least 2-3 times a week for lunch/dinner, if there was one close to me. It's like a clean fast food joint for vegetarians. Am I behaving or am I being naughty by eating here? I can't decide. The layout is similar to The Counter, except you order your meal at the register. It's quick and easy and fresh. Iced Tea Station - you can self serve. Score. Normally, I don't like pre-sweetened ice teas, but these teas were good AND low calories. Sweet potato fries - I am NOT a fan of sweet potato fries because they are conduits of pure grease, which then in turn makes them almost always soggy or limp with that darkened oil stain. Mmmmmm. VG knows how to cook a fry. They were light, crispy, and not an overdose of oil on fry. Dare I even go far as to say, they tasted *almost* like air baked with some oil tossed in for some extra flavor. Love. The sandwiches are wholesome and hearty. I think I'd enjoy every sandwich on the menu. I didn't try any of their salads, so I guess the true test still remains. Sides of beans and cole slaw - finished every bite. Delicious, refreshing, and the cole slaw had perfect crunch. At the end of the meal, I felt content, fulfilled, and not an ounce of guilt came my way after eating all those fries. I am so very glad we have VG as an option. No longer do I have to suffer with the other vegetarian options (overpriced also) around or have to pretend Real Food Daily or Juliano's Raw were ever good. I've been coming here for over 3 years now....I don't know if, as they've grown, they are having more problems maintaining consistency and quality but I find myself enjoying VG less and less. Why? The food has changed. The menu has certainly expanded which is great but my favorites are now becoming ... unfavorited. For example, their All Hail Kale Salad with blackened chikin had been my go to (I would occasionally try a sandwich, soup or plate but there was nothing like that delicious salad to me). Recently, though, the salad has really been downsized (without a doubt the portion is smaller than before). The marinade that usually made the kale so tender and delicious seems lackluster. The dressing is totally different to me and worse, the kale has been, on several occasions, sandy and gritty. One time I picked up a salad and a entree to go (saving the salad for the next day). When I opened up the untouched salad the cabbage slaw on top had already started going bad (it was slimey and had a clear filmy texture to it) so I had to trash it. I was so disappointed that I emailed their customer service, got a response and then never heard back. I have to give props to a place that could get my "meat & potato" husband to eat Vegan food. It took me a year to get my husband in the door (I was able to get my kids in sooner than him). If the menu didn't have tasty items, I couldn't have gotten him back. However, not only did he like it, he went through a phase that he craved it every week. Kudos to Veggie Grill. Located in the back corner of Plaza El Segundo. If you try to go during lunch, expect to circle around looking for a parking spot. There are many businesses in the area and they all unload here at lunch. The ambiance feels more like fast food, not a sit down restaurant. The tables & chairs are hard counter style. You stand in a line to place your order and then they bring out your food. Favorite Items in our household: Buffalo Wings Sweetheart Fries Santa Fe Crispy Chickin Sandwich Buffalo Bomber Sandwich Grillin' Chickin' Sandwich Chili *Glad they provide the nutritional info online; this took a while. I always suspected that the calories were higher because of the sauces. They do have beer & wine, but I usually stuck with water. Note: I would strongly recommend not getting your order to go. Loved it! Even my non-vegetarian friend really loved it and asked "Why aren't there nice places like this closer to my place?" (We both live in West L.A.) The Veggie Grill feels very similar to Native Foods (I've only been to the one in Orange County, not sure about Westwood), but it's even more spacious, but equally clean and friendly. The overwhelmingly female (a plus for me!) work staff is super friendly, attentive, and they never seem to forget where you're sitting. You order, take a number, then they bring your food to you, like people do at nicer Carl's Jr's (That might be an oxymoron). I've been going strong on the vegetarian deal for almost a couple months now and I'm really happy that I have found The Veggie Grill. I had a delicious California Chicken Sandwich (it was a special that day) that had some of the best tasting "Chicken" I've had. It didn't have that fake chicken taste and aftertaste that a lot of vegetarian places have and it came on really nice bread. The slaw that came with it was great on a hot day in Manhattan Beach and yes, the sweet potato fries are as good as advertised. Like many vegetarian joints, The Veggie Grill serves room temperature water. That's really my only complaint about the place. I don't know if ice is filled with beef, but I wish that a brotha could get some ice in this place. They might have some, but I didn't ask. I'm sure the water has some kind of special filter, but I wish the filter made the water colder. It's clean, quick, laid back, and super good (prices will run in the $10-$15 range). This will be a regular spot for me whenever I'm in the South Bay. Run up the dune in Manhattan, then come down here for lunch, then go home, shower, take a nap, and call it a day. FIRE!!! this is the place is soooo good. i tried the seasonal philly cheese steak with fries with bbq sauce and ranch. all vegan friendly of course and it was fire. everything was soooo good. one thing i did appreciate is that the food was really tasty and the bell peppers and onions still had their crunch which i do like. stephanie (the host) was really nice and took our order and answered all the questions i had. was really patient and i didn't feel rushed. this place is very welcoming and i would definitely recommend and come back to try something new. read more

We came here last night for the first time and I was really impressed. The decor is SO cute and the cashier was super friendly! It was almost a five star experience except that I didn't like my food as much as I liked my friend's food. My friend got the Chicken Sante Fe with the Sweet Potato Fries and I got the Cheeseburger with a side of mac & cheese. The veggie patty that they use for the chicken is A LOT better than the veggie patty that they use for the hamburger. The mac & cheese was good but a little bland...nothing compared to the fries though. We also split a carrot cake which was DELICIOUS!!! I'm looking forward to going back to get their chicken sandwich and fries for myself. And the salads looked really tasty too. I usually get the pick-a-pair combo since it's a good value and the right size for a filling meal. The All Hail Kale salad is tasty and fresh. The Bombay Bowl is tasty with its sauce. The menu offers lots of options. Service is pretty good. The staff is friendly and the food usually doesn't take long to come out. This restaurant is located in a complex, so free parking isn't hard to find. It does get busy around lunch time though. read more

I love this place! Everything here is vegan and vegetarian, from the carne asada to the chicken it's all vegetarian! The thing I love is that it really does taste like meat! But all that aside the owner is an awesome man who will on occasion be in the restaurant asking how everything is. Service here is exceptional! Always someone cleaning the tables and coming to ask if you need anything. As for the food I have tried almost everything on the menu but my faves are the chop chop salad and the Grillin chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. Their Mac and cheese is also very yummy! And for dessert you must grab a chocolate chip cookie or two! Prices are fairly cheap but definitely worth it. This place does get really packed with the line out the door during peak hours like noon and dinner. So be prepared. Seating is a little tight with the tables being so close together. Also you can sign-up for emails and for your birthday they will send you a card for a free meal. All in all this is a place to try. read more

Healthy, cholesterol-free, trans-fat-free and high-fructose corn syrup-free. On the healthy side, it's obviously superior. I am not vegetarian, but for all you manly men, just think about when you can't get it up because of too much 'meatly meat' clogging your arteries and of your charming 'love handles.' Taste-wise -- really yummy. Most seasonings are derived from herbs and vegetables to begin with. Nice, varied, menu selection. Oh - their iced teas are great!! I'm jumping off the band wagon on this one, because my experience here left me disappointed. Our meal was over forty dollars, but I was expecting that after reading reviews. However, I thought I was going to enjoy the food much more than I did. I got the standard grilled chicken sandwich. It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite knock my socks off either. I felt no feeling of wanting to return to have it again. Although the kale side order was good, it was similarly lacking in motivating me to ever return. My friend got the burger with the onion rings and everything. This tasted much less like meat than the chicken sandwich. The Chinese chicken salad was dismal. I forced myself to eat half of it before giving up entirely. The one redeeming factor here is the chili sweet potato fries. These were awesome. I would definitely have them again, but wouldn't go out of my way just for fries. read more
