It's catfish, it's good, portions are large. That's about it. I love catfish but I like big, fat, steaming filets, not Cheeto-size too-crunchy strips. Vernon's served nice, chubby filets. Hush puppies come before every meal, as they should. No one should have to pay extra for hush puppies at a catfish place. That's just wrong. These are good ones, golf ball size with just enough jalapeño for a nice heat level. The tartar sauce is spicy, the sweet tea is sweet but I added a packet of sugar to make it a little more hard core. We went on Sunday for lunch so there was a big after church crowd. The wait was a good fifteen minutes and service is very leisurely. We didn't mind but don't be in a hurry. Big onion rings. The potato salad was exceptional, tangy and chunky. This place is the epitome of "comfort food"... It's not a fancy schmancy place with exotic foods or flavors, it's just good old southern down home cooking! We've been coming here for years, almost always during lunch time. My favorite thing HAS to be the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo... mmmmm... Seriously, a bowl of that and a little salad and I'm good. You really can't go wrong ordering anything from the menu. Just realize that after you order something fried you will want to take a serious nap. The portions are very large and some of the sides can be kind of heavy. But they do have lighter stuff that is grilled or smoked. The smoked chicken is excellent, very moist and just enough smoke flavor to give it that BBQ taste but not overpowering. Yes, I love the hush puppies & tomato relish. The hush puppies have jalapenos in them so they have some kick. The cornbread is also excellent. A lot of the fried stuff is kind of a little bland, but seriously look around the place and you will notice a LOT of the clientele are senior citizens! It's also good for families because a lot of little kids like things "plain" (with tons of ketchup). If you want something with serious KICK, try the chicken & sausage gumbo! It's got plenty of spice! During Christmas time they used to have a huge punch bowl filled with Egg Nog, Butter Pecan ice cream, and RUM. I don't know if they do that anymore but it sure made everyone jolly! I'm allergic to seafood, so I've never had any of their fried catfish that people rave about, but I do see plenty of plates of it being served up. The staff is always polite and pleasant. Great restaurant. Staff was nice and attentive but not overly attentive. The tomato relish is good, the hush puppies were tasty, and so was the fried okra. The fish was southern fried and pretty good, it was just shy on the seasoning but still good. I loved the sweet tea, people in Texas thinks sweet tea should be 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup tea...way too sweet, but theirs was just right for me I even got a cup to go. I didn't care for the rice and cream gravy next time I will try another side. They have a BBQ place right up the street from here that I also plan to try. read more

They have a lunch crowd that is at full capacity every day, Monday through Friday, if you want chicken and dumplings, served only on Mondays and Wednesdays, get there early or you might not get them. I'm honest in saying that even though hungry, there was no way I could finish the entire plate. I've eaten here many times in the past and it was always delicious. On 7/3/21 I had the seafood combo and it wasn't very good at all. The shrimp had brown gravy spilled on it and waitress didn't offer to replace. All the breading on fried foods was greasy and had been cooked in old grease. I stopped in for lunch a few days ago. I've been coming to Vernon's for many years, but hadn't been since the quarantines. It felt good to come back. My standard order for 20 years is fried catfish with hush puppies and cole slaw. I know that sounds limiting, but it's their flagship product. It's good. The coating is perfect. It's not oily tasting, the fish is flaky but holds together well. Many times the fish comes straight from the fryer to my plate. Their hush puppy recipe is spot on. Service is always good, the quantity of food is just right and the price is reasonable.
