Obviously, no one ever wants to be in a position where they have to take their beloved pet to the ER, but if you ever find yourself in such a situation, there is no better place I could ever recommend. This is, hands down, the best medical care I have ever received. There is absolutely nothing more I could have asked for. Last week, I brought my Muffin (my sassy rescue kitty who's been with me for almost the entirety of my medical career) here after she got into a scuffle with our dog. My friend had placed a VEG magnet on my refrigerator door a few months prior, with rave reviews about how quickly they were able to take care of her very curious bee-eating dog, saying "I hope you never have to use this, but if you need to, I'd recommend this place." I called them in a panic and got there ~20 min later. They'd already sent me a link to check in but I didn't notice it due to said panic. They took us to the back right away and did a quick assessment + started her on oxygen to stabilize her. Muffin sustained bilateral pneumothorax and was eventually intubated + underwent 2 repairs. She went into cardiac arrest when they tried to see if she could breathe again on her own. They were able to bring her back and managed to extubate her + remove her chest tube and wean her off her pain medications to oral meds and she was able to be discharged to come home with me -- all this in less than the span of the most heart-wrenching 48 hours of my life I've had in a very long time. Every step of the way, they explained their assessments with me, what they were planning to do, what they expected to happen + what might happen instead (e.g. not-so-ideal vs worst case scenarios), and answered any and every question I had. I got to be next to her for almost the entire time (minus the surgery and CPR portion, very understandable). They also gave me the time and insight I needed to make incredibly difficult decisions. For some time, they were worried about pulmonary lacerations, which would've required a specialty surgeon, so they called multiple hospitals everywhere in case she'd need a transfer, but they were thankfully able to stabilize her and she was able to recover right where she was at VEG. They set up a private room for us to stay in so we'd have a place to nap while we were there and got me tea, cookies, coffee, blankets, and even found a phone charger for me to borrow since I'd left home in such a rush. (Thank you, Petra + Rachael!) They checked in with Muffin often and also with me to make sure I'd eaten/was taken care of as well. All the vets, nurses, vet techs, and staff were absolutely phenomenal but I wanted to specifically mention Dr. Dewlaney for her surgical expertise and compassion, Dr. Fabelo for talking me through what to expect and dealing with what a wreck I was, and Dr. Reinhart for the smooth transition/handoff and calling so many places for us, just in case Muffin might end up needing it. Also many thanks to Sheila for checking on Muffin and sending me photo/text updates when I finally convinced myself to go home/stop living at VEG. (I'm really sorry that I wasn't able to get everyone's names, but please know I really appreciate you all!) I hope in my heart of hearts that none of my pets will ever need emergency services again, but there is no better place to receive care and words cannot describe the amount of comfort I felt just knowing that Muffin was in the hands of the best of the best. After 16 beautiful years together, Obi's health started to fade and we took him here to try to save his life. This vet misdiagnosed my dog which resulted in her painful death the very next morning. I have since researched and spoken with other vets who have told me that her symptoms necessitated further tests, which she didn't receive. We were told that she would be fine and that they were "almost 100%" sure of it. She as diagnosed with THC ingestion when in fact she was in distress from heart failure. Now, my soul mate is dead and she didn't get any help at all, or any chance to live longer, and we, her family, didn't even get to say goodbye. This vet stole all that from us. SO happy we got referred to VEG. Sadly, our dog got attacked by coyotes and we had to find care to stitch her up and guide us through recovery. They took us in the same day. I swear as soon as you walk in, it feels like one big happy/helpful family. The space itself is open concept, with a waiting room that has a very relaxing tone for those who are stressed (VERY calming for the animals). Our dog is very selective with who she lets around and who can pet her. The staff did such a great job at making her comfortable and letting her know she's in good hands. My Chihuahua recently couldn't eat or drink, so I took her to VEG San Ramon for a check-up. I waited in the lounge for about 40 minutes before finally seeing the vet. The veterinarian suspected that she might have a neurological issue preventing her from eating. I asked if it could possibly be related to her teeth, but he said no, that wasn't the case. The response already made me feel doubtful about their practice because as the primary reason for not eating, a basic common sense may be due to teeth issue. After that, the vet took my Chihuahua for bloodwork and tried to feed her some boiled chicken, but she still refused to eat. The bloodwork came back completely normal. Vet then prescribed Entyce (an appetite stimulant) and sent us home, telling us to observe her for a few days. The total bill was almost $1000, which only included blood works and couple doses of Entyce, not a small amount. Over the next few days, I did notice that Entyce helped a little with her appetite, but it was just a temporary fix. The real root cause was never addressed, and I felt like the money I spent there was wasted. If it wasn't for my pet insurance covering part of the bill, I honestly wouldn't know how to deal with it. Eventually, I took her to my regular vet, who discovered the real issue her teeth. She ended up having 16 teeth extracted, and now she has completely recovered and is eating and drinking normally again. I strongly do not recommend bringing your pet to VEG San Ramon. From my experience, it feels like they hire fresh graduates with limited experience, which increases the risk of misdiagnosis. The only positive thing I can say is that they do allow you to stay with your pet during the visit, so the owner doesn't feel stressful. Ultimately, this place needs to hire veterinarian with relevant experience to prevent misdiagnosing patients. read more

Wow. Just a couple of years old, a new 24 hr emergency vet came to town. Located next to Chipotle in the Safeway center on Crown Valley & San Ramon Valley Blvd. I expected the same setup that I've been to numerous times over the years. I had no idea that it was a state of the art facility, built similarly to a Human E/R with open space and "nursing" stations with computers. Sure, they have some private rooms to the side (for severe cases, an operating room, etc.), but generally you sit with your pet and it's treated with you. No longer is your precious one taken to the back and who knows what. So, what I witnessed was extremely incredibly caring and knowledgeable staff, not just with our pup but with countless others (dogs, cats, rabbits, bird). In our particular case, without an appt (you can book online), we did have to wait awhile to be seen by the Vet. However, we were immediately checked-in, placed in a seating area, and was offered drinks (coffee, tea, water) -- nice! All the people we interacted with were so nice and accommodating. Sure, we had to wait a long while, but Dr. Casa was wonderful and so caring. Our pup is on the mend...and we're so grateful. read more

It has taken me some time to write this, but I had to say how pleased I was with the whole experience and the wonderful staff that assisted my cat Tubby and helped him get better from his UTI.. From the moment I stepped in, they were so inviting and helpful, and had him assessed right away. Later on, we had to wait for the last phase of the process due to them having to tend to surgeries, but I did not mind the wait at all. I was just so impressed to see how the team helped all the animals with such care and dedication. It was also pleasant to see how everyone genuinely enjoyed their job and how well they worked together. And cookies and tea were so great!! It was a worst case scenario for a pet parent: Our dog, senior with cancer who had just beat a big death scare a few weeks prior, needed immediate care at 1am. Our plan A, B, and C emergency vets were overwhelmed and unable to see him. At the time, VEG was brand new and had only three reviews. I was not comforted by this, but they had the time to see our dog and I had to trust in destiny that this was where he needed to be. We brought our guy in at 1:30am, and we put him down by 5:30am. The team was exceptional at doing everything they could and keeping our dog comfortable while giving my husband and I the space to say our goodbyes. From age and a battle with cancer, his heart was failing. The vet took the time to reach out to a cardio expert to ensure proper treatment was being given. Our dog was a retired police K9, and saying goodbye was as near impossible for my husband as it could be. The vet was extraordinary about advocating for our dog's peace while understanding the deep dynamic of the relationship, and walked the very delicate line of tough love and caring empathy. We were given a private room with as much time as needed to say goodbye, both before and after putting him down. The team was incredibly gracious and allowed special requests to be made in the process that was very important for my husband. The vet even reached out later to let us know that she connected with the cardio expert, and that even if we had chosen to emergency transport our dog to her she wouldn't have been able to save his life... it was simply his time, and we made the right decision. No pet parent could ask for more, or more gracious care. I hope to not need these services for a very long time, but if we do, we will be choosing VEG again. read more

I like the big open room - I felt l like I was participating in the care of Cassidy and we were allowed to stay with her - which means a lot. The staff is knowledgeable, efficient, and compassionate. Unfortunately, our dogs disease ran it's course and we had to return there last night to put her down, but the staff at VEG were wonderful to us in that terrible moment. I do not recommend this veterinary group. They now have turned into money scammers. I had a doctor tonight not give me a heads up about an extra sedative that she added that was different from the original quote. I only saw them give him one shot so not sure when the second one was administered. It would have been easy for her to say this is what we suggest that is different from the quote. After all I was right there during the procedure. When I saw the bill at the end I asked why she added more money and an additional sedative during a simple procedure. She stated that "most people don't care if an extra couple of hundred dollars are added to their bill when their quote is already more than $1000." I couldn't believe my ears. After going back and forth with her on this she said that she would minus the charge but had a severe attitude about it. Another problem that I had with this location is one of the nurses that assisted whom was extremely uncomfortable with my dog. She shouldn't be an ER vet nurse if she doesn't like pit bulls. The other nurse was just fine with my dog and so was the doctor. I use to like them but now they have changed for the worse. read more

The team at VEG exceeded my expectations on our recent visit. We came in because our dog got into some foxtail. I pulled what I could see from the front of her nose and mouth. She was still sneezing and had blood coming out of her nose. They took us in quickly, I agreed to the treatment plan, and they brought us back to sedate her. She was anxious and jumpy so they brought us to a private room where she calmed down and eventually fell asleep. After a second round of sedation, the team took a look and carefully removed the foxtail from the inside of her nose. They thoroughly checked her ears and mouth and paws for any more. They gave her wake up stuff and she woke up in about 15 minutes. I'm so glad I brought my dog in to make sure. The vets were really nice and caring. They know what they're doing. I wanted to write a review for the service we received tonight from Dr Alex G, and Katie. Our dog Luffy has glaucoma and his left eye and he has had a flareup over the past three days resulting in high eye pressure. He's been wincing in pain and very lethargic tonight we came in at 10 PM and were seen very quickly where the providers took the time to calm our dog down, even though he's very stressed and will rumble when he's meeting new people. On top of that, they confirmed the reason why he's wincing and having the flareup was due to a small ulcer on his left eye. We sadly were giving him the wrong medication which they quickly corrected and provide provided us with new medication. We live in Martinez and drive out of our way to come to this location due to the great experiences we've had here as opposed to the Pleasant Hill location. Third (unfortunate) visit in the last 2 years for our rabbit. The staff are welcoming, reassuring, and efficient. You get the feeling that they care about your pet's health and comfort and not just collecting $$. I've seen a variety of pets during our visits - dogs & cats of course but also a goat and a chameleon! The set up is pretty genius, and they will literally come over to you for a quick triage/eval of what's going on then move you to a table, or room for care as needed, all the while keeping you close to your pet and informed of wait and care plan. Today was just a check in to see if all is well after her injury, and I was in and out in about 20 minutes. That may not be the norm and of course our last visit was much longer, but that was to be expected. We are very happy customers and highly recommend them! read more

Open floor plan, the vet comes to you. The exam was quick and efficient. An ultra sound was recommended and done. Unfortunately it showed cancer of the spleen with a large blood capsule pressing against his organs. Traces of this cancer were seen on the liver. Prognosis was grim. $8k major surgery to remove spleen and capsule. And a life expectancy of less than 6 months if he survives the surgery. I couldn't put my 11 year old Rottweiler through this, so I made the difficult decision. Best feature of Veg is that you stay with your pet for the whole visit, even while they did the ultrasound in a secluded room. read more

This is the ONLY emergency Vet I'll now take my dogs to. You can be with your pet the whole time! This fabulous "open in person" way of treating animals is by far the least stressful way of doing things. I was recommended to go here by my Veterinary clinic to have my dog get a sonogram. I go to Central Boulevard Vet in Brentwood, they are my regular clinic. They were fabulous with my lab. Now this week my two 9 lb poodles got into (very toxic) raisins. Central Boulevard Bet over the phone again recommended me to take my dogs to VEG. VEG saved both my dogs lives! 24 hours of fluids, constant contact via texts for updates! It's a bit pricey, that being said, with the funds for saving their lives! Thank you VEG! The whole staff is awesome! Dr. Willis was so caring, she was great at explaining everything for my Poodles. All the support staff was as well. This evening for their post bloodwork as I was waiting for results Dr Willis had to give hard sad news to a client and she herself was so caring that she too was almost in tears letting the owner know the test results. She is wonderful! Dr. Gascoyne also cared for my babies too during the day shift, she as well kept me updated on how they were doing. My advice: if it's for routine care, go to your regular Veterinarian office. If it's urgent care needed, go directly to VEG! They see EVERY type of animal too, including Chickens!! I took my dog to this place. The Vet never touched nor looked at my dog however she came back in. the room with a $2000 quote. When I told the Vet that I couldn't afford that she said "What can you afford". Well she just charged me what she felt like for a nausea pill and Slam IV on my dog. When I arrived my bun was seen right away. The staff was extremely helpful and very friendly. I met with Dr. Dombrosky, and I'd like to say he iis very compassionate. He mentioned he has had rabbits in the past and was very knowledgeable. The atmosphere was modern and open space filled with pets and technicians. My rabbit was treated for GI Stasis which is common in rabbits. With Dr. Dombrosky's treatment plan, I am hoping for a smooth recovery. PS. My friend kind of inherited a cat from her neighbors and today he showed up looking a bit rough. She suspected a coyote got him so we took the little guy in to VEG. The entire staff was wonderful and patient, answering all her questions as a first time "cat mom" and addressing her concerns. Luckily we got seen very quickly and in the end, though he had a few puncture spots, seems in good health. They did some blood work on him and got him pain meds, anti-inflammatory as well as his rabies shot and flea preventative. We were there about two hours but the staff always made sure to check in with us and make sure we were comfortable every step of the way. For everything they did, the total was astoundingly reasonable!! I've taken my cats to Sage in Dublin as it's closer and definitely paid more(though they also have been angels when we've needed them.) The only drawback I would say is their open tables seeing patients. Visits can be stressful enough and seeing and hearing other pets can cause some alarm. However, I know they have some private rooms if that's needed. We saw all kinds of care happening around us and the staff were all highly professional. Definitely can recommend this place as long as you are aware walking in that they do see patients out in a general area with rolling tables. read more

I like the nurses and doctors here more than I like my own regular veterinarian! The staff here (there are plenty of them) are just so pleasant to be around. One doctor called my doggie "boo boo" and "honey bunch". My regular vet would never! In fact I loved my visits here so much that I am considering finding another vet that's female, I find that they embrace and empathize with my dog so much more than my current male vet in San Ramon. I also appreciate that they're not pushy to sell me things like my regular vet is. Luckily my dog didn't need major critical care I came here for some benign symptoms I noticed him having. Due to this being less severe I went into the waiting room most times while if you have bigger issues you get priority. The waiting room is well conditioned, and they have snacks and water and coffee while you wait. I've only been here twice and the first time was literally a wait of 5 hours while the second time was more like 3 hours. It depends how busy they are but nonetheless I'm glad they provide water and wifi. The visit here turned out to be less than when I went there to my regular vet. I wish I could go here regularly for my doggies check up! Service is outstanding and price is reasonable compared to my regular vet bills. I will admit since it's an ER for animals I do see some sad sights happening with animals, be prepared to cry as you see some animals and owners sad. My rabbit Chloe wasn't doing so well. She wasn't really eating or drinking much for about 4-5 days, super lethargic and nice, which isn't her demeanor. Her exotic vet couldn't get her in. I also called numerous exotic vets also and none of them could get her in. So I was told I needed to come here because rabbits health c an turn very quickly. We got there at 6pm, the vet came and checked Chloe and said she heard a heart murmur and would take bloodwork and do an xray. They finally gave Chloe a shot at 935 to make her sleepy and took xrays at 10pm. Having to wait so long, it was so sad seeing so many people bawling their eyes out losing their pet. Also while waiting; there qere dogs who came in, and were done and left in less than an hour. There was another animal that came 2 hours after us that needed xrays, got them done, even though we were first, and they were sent on their way. At 1030 we had to wait around for the results of the bloodtest and xray. They didn't find anything wrong with my rabbit and wrote a subscription for meloxicam they didn't have. They told me that any vet or human pharmacy would have it. We left a little after midnight. I called every single human pharmacy around and also every single vet clinic around me. Only one vet clinic had it but said my animal has to be a patient for them to give meds even with a prescription, but they aren't exotic vet. No other vet or pharmacy had it.... I called VEG to see if there is anything else that can be prescribed. They shouldn't prescribe something that cannot be bought locally. We shouldn't have to go find a place online to purchase a medication. The only way I could possibly get meds is if VEG sends prescription to chewy.com and put that my rabbit is a dog because the medication isn't supposed to be for rabbits. The vet said she would "call me back in 10 minutes" after she researched if there is another medication that my rabbit can take so I can get it asap. They called me about 5 hours later saying there is no substitution. My rabbit left no better than she came in because all they did was give her a prescription for gabapentin, which was useless. I wish there was another emergency vet that was closer since we came from Gilroy. read more

What an unexpectedly great experience visiting a vet! The staff are the best! They treated my dog, Biscuit, so nicely and the staff in general is very warm and welcoming. The waiting room is also lovely. I had called a bunch of vets closer to me, including emergency vets, to see if they would take my dog and none of them wanted to take her. When I called VEG, they didn't even hesitate, they told me to bring her right in so I did. There were so many staff in there, and I was impressed that it never felt disorganized. There was also a big screen with a list of all the patients that helped me get a sense of what their workload was at the moment so that was helpful. They really handled my dog with care and was able to work with her personality, which is very shy and unsure of strangers. The bandage they put on her paw was very neatly done and they took a lot of Care into doing it right. I recommend this place to anyone who is having a pet emergency. read more

I brought my sweet 11 1/2 year old Sophie in for urgent care on a Saturday several weeks ago and we were compassionately taken care of by Dr. Perkins. (THANK YOU so much) Everyone we interacted with that day was so caring and sympathetic for our furry baby and myself as we waited for her care. Sophie's care seemed to be exactly what we needed to help through some bumpy times with her that day. Yet, within a couple of days, we realized the issues had not improved and were only going to get worse. We were faced with a devastating decision. Although our hearts are broken, we chose to give our lovely Sophie dignity and grace and so much love as we shared her final moments. We will always question this decision but feel the correct choice was made for our lovely girl. read more

Once again I report that this business is fantastic. A few months back they helped me thru the difficult desicion of allowing my dog to trot over the rainbow bridge. Kind, caring, patient, the entire team made me feel secure in what I had to do and they sat with me as I said goodbye. I had to go yesterday to ask for information on a dog that I am caring for for an ill family member, a breed that I am uncomfortable with and have never had any dealings with. I was greeted by two young ladies, sorry I didn't get their names, but one of them had fantastic fingernails, but I digress. They spent 15 mnutes giving me information, phone numbers and even e-mailed me follow up information. They were honest and told me that they could trim the dogs nails but that there would be a larger charge than the other contacts they were giving me. Honest, caring and informative.
