My dog was referred here by another ER after swallowing a pork rib bone whole that might have caused obstruction. They are one of the few places that was able to do an emergent endoscopy. I was so surprised that we are able to be with our dog during the entire process. From the IV insertion, taking X-rays, and even during intraop! Talk about transparency! I watched Dr. Alex Gascoyne and the vet techs work diligently together to manipulate the pork bone out. I am beyond impressed and grateful for the care my dog received. Recently my dog had a week of diarrhea, vomiting ,and was acting more lethargic. Our primary care vet suggested we should go to the ER. Even though we live in the south bay, we drove all the way to the east bay just so we can take her to VEG. Dr. Kate Sullenberger took great care of her and followed up to make sure my dog was doing ok days later. Every Vet ER practice should emulate their model after VEG. The pricing and care is transparent, the team is top notch, and the workflow/patient experience immaculate. read more

After my guinea pig passed I wanted some fur tied together to remember her by. They told me they would do it and at first brought back 2 bottles of fur stuffed in. I told them I wanted to get different pieces and I would do it myself. One of the female vets still had her back and just half hazardly shaved half of her and gave me a bag. I can't anything with this. The picture is what was in the bag I was given. I asked to do it myself and finally they gave her back, but all the parts that made her fur unique was shaved and gone. She didn't look the same anymore. The lady seemed irritated I wanted to cut it myself and hesitantly gave me scissors. Ik they have a lot to deal with, but this is not okay to me. I can't get that image of my guinea pig out of my head. I would like to add that the initial vet we saw was quick but just agreed that it was something respiratory going on with my baby. He recommended fluids and medicine, but never told me what medicine. He left and 30-45 min past with nothing still. I never even got pricing. At that point I was ready to go home. As soon as I tried to check out and leave with the front desk another girl finally came to check on my guinea pig. She wanted me to hold her on her back while she checked her temperature in her butt. She wasn't very gentle with her when she did so and I could tell the thermometer was getting shoved all around. When I put her back in the carrier she immediately lost use of her back legs. She lost her heart beat shortly after. I had to get the attention of another girl because the first one left shortly after taking the temp, not checking in on her after. They took her away and performed CPR which was useless. We were sitting in a waiting room filled with dogs barking and whining. Her respiratory issue alone did not cause her death in that hospital. I really do think the final straw for her passing right then and there was from placing her on her back and being so rough from taking her temp. I hate that her last moments were being taken away when I never asked for CPR to be done and the fact that I kept having to find people to keep coming back. I understand they are busy, but you can't just walk away and be too busy to back and check when an animal is actively dying. I will never forget how it ended. I believe the one who roughly handled taking the temperature was Tye. I have gone down and read a similar review further back about this same person being rough with a guinea pig and not knowing how to correctly handle them. Long overdue review, but this place is great! Much different approach to a traditional veterinary office with an open concept layout allowing you to sit and watch as pets of all stripes are helped by a full staff of kind, skilled, knowledgeable vets and techs. Fair pricing and excellent quality care from a team who is clearly passionate about the work they do. My dog Ralphie was attacked by a random street dog while on a walk and I brought him to VEG primarily because they were one of the few e-vets that allowed owners to be with their pets while waiting for care (most are drop off only). Ralphie had lacerations and punctures all over his neck/ears/legs. He was cared for by Dr. Hyder and Amy, who meticulously stitched him back together while we watched in an open concept operating area. Ralph had two follow up visits for suture and drain removals, and we received the same high quality and compassionate care from every other vet and tech who helped us. Ralph made a full recovery with no complications. I wish they offered non-emergency/primary care services because the quality of care is amazing! Some bonus features: -Kind front desk staff who continuously offered fresh baked cookies and beverages. -Multiple waiting areas -Dedicated cleaning staff periodically wiping down surfaces/restrooms and mopping the floors. Not sure who I spoke with but the guy was helpful and comforting while I was panicking and on the brink of tears because I thought something was seriously wrong with my cat. Few of the most trusted, knowledgeable, caring and rational vets crews I've ever seen works at this fine hospital. We've had so many pets and tried many vets, but when it comes to emergency, this is our family's #1 place to go. In the past couple month, we had 2 incidents with 2 dogs. The first was with our new puppy 11 weeks old. Was diagnosed with Parvo 10 days after being with us. For those who this virus it could kill puppies. So things went down quickly and we almost lost our new puppy. The 24 hours care this crew provided for him and the cares they gave to him was instrumental. In addition to taking care of our puppy they were comforting us and were very transparent of his condition. They encouraged us to stay on course given their experience with this virus and provided us the right advice. They welcomed us anytime to visit him and to be with him knowing how much that will mean to the puppy even when he was unconscious. After 6 days , the bill was huge but they offered us a nice discount and the puppy is home with us. He literally came from the dead. Now he is playing with his twin brother at home. 1.5 months later, our Sr dog was going through so many internal things, we took him there. The crew gave us a plan for how he can get better but they also were honest with us that , the plan is not a cure and things are just temporary solution to make our dog comfortable. We knew then, that it's best to let our sr dog go and save him the pain today and later. It hurts to even remember that moment but I appreciate their honesty and the way they felt with the situation. There are times when a person need to lean on the vet for advice and this crew, might not love your animal the way you do, but they care about both ( the pet and the owner) and they provide their advice to make things easier for the decision to made by the owner. Yes, in this hospital we saved a puppy and we said our final good bye to another , in both it was great experience. Highly recommend this hospital for those owners that need care and they care!!! They put me on the phone with a vet IMMEDIATELY who helped answer my question. I've never even been to this vet and they went out of their way to help me. I am so blessed to have stumbled across this place. The care, compassion and kindness the staff have provided to me and my sweet angel Grizzly is unmatched to anywhere I've taken him to. Unfortunately my sweet baby passed away but when I tell you they care, I brought him in one evening and one doctor immediately had an instinct she needed to see him before moving forward with any other pet. With sadness he didn't make it, but the entire process of putting Grizzly out of his misery was straightforward, and the nurses who helped out were very respectful and we were able to be with him while he passed in a secluded room. I also want to note that this place is very well organized and operates smoothly. The place is very clean and you can tell management cares about the training and happiness of the workers. So I could cry writing this review because I feel like this place helped me in my most extreme time of need, which is ironic because they have a saying on the wall "helping people and their pets when they need it most" which is literally what they did. I called about 10 vets in my area all saying they were full and couldn't accept new patients. My poor dog rocko couldn't stand up or walk so of course he needed immediate attention. I finally called Veterinary emergency group and right away they were friendly and told me to bring rock in.. Unfortunately he had to stay over night, the night team seriously gave their all to find the source of the problem, help me remain calm and just show that they genuinely were concerned for my dog. . Next morning came and rocko wasn't any better leading to a hard decision we had to make. . Our morning doctor picked right up where the night crew left off as far as being soooooo amazing. I was so emotional and felt so supported and comforted. This place is so amazing, thank you everyone who helped rocko and I, both night and day doctors from the bottom of my heart thank you guys so much. I wanted to give special shout outs to: Dr. Schaefer - he took the time to sketch out a 2-D picture for me after my dog's ultrasound so I could better understand what he could see on his end. He was very sweet & knowledgeable. Dr. Sullenberger - she performed my pupper's emergency surgery. She is EXTREMELY passionate about her job. She was excited to show us what she was able to extract from my dog you can tell she loves what she does and she is great at it! I'm happy she was our surgeon. Nurse Kyal she's assisted us multiple times. She's so gentle & caring. She always helps explain procedures to keep us in the loop (and calm my anxiety). We recently took our 2 year old male Shih Tzu to VEG San Ramon due to an anaphylactic reaction that adversely affected his liver and gallbladder. It was our first time dealing with an emergency health issue for our beloved Shih Tzu and would highly recommend VEG San Ramon for your beloved family member. We were absolutely blown away by the facility and its open and bright layout where you can see and stay with your family member while they are being treated (and YES, that even includes if they have to stay the entire night for care and observation). Dr. To and the entire VEG team were all consummate professionals who love their jobs / animals and did their best to provide our Shih Tzu with a warm, welcoming and caring environment. Even more remarkable given that VEG was extremely busy during our visit with a wide variety of different clients including dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, etc. VEG staff communications was outstanding, they kept us apprised of our Shih Tzu's diagnosis, care plan, treatments and tests / monitoring. The communication between VEG staff was also excellent, e.g., "the right hand knew what the left hand was doing." While it was very expensive from a cost perspective, the old adage applies to VEG San Ramon "you get what you pay for". Thank goodness our pet insurance helped offset some of the final bill. read more

This becomes my go-to ER vet from now on even we live in Fremont. After a horrible and ripped-off situation at another ER vet, we arrived here around 11pm. We were seen within half an hour which is reasonable considering there were at least another 6 groups of patients in the waiting room. The night shift vet reassured the situation was not life threatening but my fur baby was taken in for overnight observation and I was told the day shift vet would call in the morning. As promised, Dr. Perkins called me at 9, even apologized for the delay, and thoroughly explained its situation and gave me options and steps she recommended, immediately followed with estimate via text. She continued to call me once after the procedure and before her shift was done at 7pm. She is compassionate, patient, reasonable, and even recommended me to seek quotes from other non-ER vets for a more affordable surgery. My fur baby stayed there for 2 nights and we took him home. The bill was lower than the low estimate. Although it was still a huge chuck of $$, we felt we received excellent service and for sure would be charged way more in the first ER vet that we left. We feel they truly care about the animals and want to do what best for them, vs other places just after your money. Will recommend this place to other pet owners for sure. read more

I suck and I haven't gotten a primary vet in the area for my dog, Indie, yet. So in time of an emergency after calling around to over 5 vets, they all recommended VEG. Indie was throwing up blood, which (from what I read) is a complete emergency so I didn't want to wait. I called ahead and VEG stated I could head over right away. To expedite the process they texted over a health screening to complete for check in before I arrived. I probably waited in the lobby area for about 3-5 minutes before they took us back. I love that we get to stay with our pets. They have an open floor plan, so you can see other animals being checked out and my little Indie gets very anxious at the vet, she didn't like that very much. After the doctor (Kevin Baker) asked the typical questions (what's wrong, when did the issues start, how has her mood been, etc), he did very minimal checking on her and we discussed possible causes before he handed me a 2k bill. Basically to find out what was wrong, we would need to do x-rays and blood work. That all seemed understandable but also unreasonable. I declined to do the testing because the doctor gave me no reason that the testing was necessary. They ended up injecting her with lots of fluid to keep her hydrated and an anti nausea injection. $500 later, we went home with soft food, anti-vomiting and anti-acid pills. She is doing much better now. Ugh, emergency vets are so expensive but I appreciate how simple the process was. They send discharge instructions via email with a diagnosis and care instructions. Very helpful! They also give you a 48 hour window to come back if your doggo isn't doing better without an emergency fee. read more

I have been to the VEG twice now and both times I was really impressed with their business model and their wide open floor plan. Mainly I'm so happy that they treat our furry friends with so much care and compassion. The first time I went, they were super busy. I decided to try and wait it out since my pup was having GI issues. It was coming out of both ends (if you know what I mean) so I was worried she might have a blockage. So I asked for an Xray. Since they were super busy (it was just before the 4th of July), and there were some other very high priority emergencies, we had to wait a very long time. I ended up going home because I had something else to do. The surprising thing is that they didn't charge me a penny, even though my pup was triaged. The best part is that they gave me some free advice and my dog got better after a few days of eating only rice and boiled chicken. Today I had to take my other dog in (she couldn't get an appointment for another 3 weeks at her regular vet). They had just gotten busy and, yet, we were seen very quickly. They took excellent care of my dog and we left happy, and with a small bill. Thank you VEG staff!!! read more

Our dog had non-emergency ear infection, wasn't going to kill him but he wouldn't stop scratching, shaking and just crying non stop. First took him to OakVet (see my review there), and VEG is night and day. We called ahead to see if there is a long queue for the vet, lucky for us there wasn't at the time (5am). We were greeted by a technician immediately after we got there and vet started evaluation on him very soon after. We were able to stay with him the whole time, the goal of this clinic is to cause as little distress as possible. Everyone was very patient with him even he was being a brat (from pain, itch and no sleep). The facility is very cleaned, a lot of waiting are, comfy seats for humans, and appears to be well staffed which is a miracle in Covid time. read more

I've been to V.E.G. San Ramon 3 times this past month, and each time was amazing. I didn't know what to expect when I first came to this E.R. and I was blown away to see an open floor plan. You actually get to see all of the doctors, at all times, and other families being helped. It was great! Everyone who works here is truly compassionate, kind-hearted, gentle, honest, and extremely helpful. From the people who answer the phones, to the receptionists/front end staff, the technicians and R.V.T's, to all of the doctors. I've seen nothing but smiles and care at this facility. I've had different doctors at each visit. The first was Dr. Kate Sullenberger, and she is amazing! Any doctor who reaches out days after our visit to check on my pet to remembering us when we came back for our third visit, truly cares. Dr. Kate was gentle with my sick kitty and helped us as soon as we walked in the door. I was extremely grateful. The second visit we had, Dr. Rosella To, and she was also compassionate and showed great care towards my pet. Dr. To also showed warmth when we made the difficult decision to put our pet to sleep. We were allowed into a private room, where we were able to sit on a couch with our kitty and spend time with him. Our third visit we had Dr. Angelica Carmona and Dr. Michael Hyder. Both doctors are amazing! I appreciate how they both took the time to answer all of our questions and explain to us what was happening with our pet. Each visit, I was able to help with my pet and watch everything that was happening with them. I had technicians asking if they could get me anything, like water or coffee. I was able to sit and stay with my pet as long as I wanted. I was able to see them do ultrasounds on my cats and had their blood work explained to me thoroughly. I love V.E.G. and I will continue to come back. I wish I could make this place my actual vet, but I'm happy and grateful to at least have this place as my E.R. I'm also truly thankful to all of the staff who work here. They are all amazing people who genuinely care about our pets. read more

Its Business before the Pet. Before you to this place make sure visit other group because I had 2 options to put my dog to sleep or surgery in this location. I went to an a different vet in Oakland and told my dog can come home and rest so my other family member can say good bye with no charge! a person outside our family who didn't own the dog brought my dog here without our family permission. I felt my dog was "hostage" I didn't know what the vet did or put in my dog because we left the house she was doing fine by drinking, playing, and eating. The Vet told us on the phone she was needed this and that and they already gave her meds which went up to $500! so I had my answer from the last vet location and this one was total different... BUSINESS FIRST . My dog a sleep now due to the option we had while we had to attend a family issue (outside the region of that vet area) and I didn't know what the crap they put. This review is way over due. We have a medium sized 11 year old dog named Kharma, who was hit by a truck back in October 30,2021. Luckily she survived but had serious injuries. Typically she was a hyper dog, and physically looking at her, she didn't really have much cuts, but we didn't know how she was internally. We were in Newark and called around to local Pet Hospitals who could see us. However, it was late night most places were closed or the wait was either 6-12 hours long. One of the hospitals recommended this place since it was new and shouldn't have too much of a wait. I called and explained to them what happened and they told us to just drive in. We drove to San Ramon, around 9PM, informed them I was the one who had called and we walked right in. My husband and I were very impressed with the facility. It was fully equipped, clean and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Chuck was the Vet who checked out Kharma. He did a physical examination on her and informed us on the outside, she looked fine, but it would be best to get her an x-ray. We did the x-ray and they gave her some pain medications so she can be comfortable. We got the results back turns out her internal organs had shifted up under her lung from the impact and it looked as if she needed to have a surgery to correct her injuries. We don't have pet insurance so we paid for everything upfront. When they showed us the bill for everything including the surgery and overnight stay, my husband and I were overwhelmed and hesitant. I was 7 months pregnant with our second child and we didn't have the funds upfront to pay for it. We ended up taking Kharma home to really think about our next steps. Since Kharma was already up in age we were worried if she would survive the surgery and how her quality of like after would be affected post op. The next morning, Chuck had called and informed us that he spoke to his director and said that maybe they could work out a type of deal/payment plan to try to help us out. Fortunately, they were able to come up with a payment plan that wouldn't hurt us financially. We dropped Kharma off that following Monday to have surgery and she stayed at the facility for about 2 days. We had a lot of mediation to give Kharma, but Chuck went over the directions with us very thoroughly. 2 Weeks post op, Kharma returned to normal, better than ever and our daughter was so happy to see that her canine companion was all better! Thank you to this facility for working with us and taking good care of our forever pup. We truly appreciate you guys and all your work! As much as we liked the staff and team, hopefully we don't need to see them again given the circumstances. However, if the situation arises, we will definitely be coming back to this facility again! read more

My dog, Joo, just visited VEG for his first heart failure few days ago. I was glad that he was seen right away at 5 in the morning. Everyone there was very caring and professional. Care team was compassionate and efficient. Doctors were knowledgeable and would update me with Joo's progress frequently through text messages and phone calls. They were able to keep the cost at the lower end of the estimate without compromising Joo's care. I'm very thankful. VEG made my otherwise stressful time much easier. Joo is doing good. Playful like his old self. There will be lot of life modifications, but most importantly, I still have him here with me. Like the other reviews said. Took my dog there for emergency as bishop ranch advised, they had no emergency vets that day. Walked in the door and was greeted by a receptionist with a laptop asking what the issue was. We were quickly taken care of and bandaging took place for my dog. We had to go back two days later after we took the bandage off and the wound started to reopen. Again, greeted by receptionist and quickly attended to by Anisse Houston who stayed with us through the procedures. Doctor recommended treatment and Anisse took over, she was amazing. I can't say enough positive things about VEG. My dog had an infection on his neutering site. VEG was recommended & when we called, the receptionist was very kind and patient. We came in & the bldg was very open & spaced out nicely. We were taken to a room & seen immediately even during their rush hour. The room itself wasn't scary metallic cold at all. It was warm, comfortable and quiet with the door closed. My dog is not easy, big, & very much despises VET visits of all kinds. Despite all of this, Dr Chuck was able to handle my dog professionally and put up a good fight with my dog's temper + infection, all with a positive attitude and comforting feedback the entire visit. They were able to drain the infection, clean it, and gave us clear instructions for aftercare. They also sent our primary vet what happened and what they did along with follow up recommendations. tl;dr - Just go to VEG! Don't even stop to think about it. If your pet is sick or injured and you're reading these reviews before making the (perhaps) longer drive to San Ramon, JUST GO! Now for the longer story if you feel like reading it: Just had one of the most incredible experiences there last night and I will never ever try to take my dog to another emergency pet hospital in the Bay Area. We're going straight to VEG! At 5pm my 12 year old poodle mix was bitten by another dog on our walk in Oakland. He had two puncture wounds on the right side of his face and was bleeding. I made the mistake of going to a pet hospital in Berkeley first that seemed to be the "shortest" wait in the East Bay. (They told me 4-6hrs... while everyone else told me 8-10hrs OR they were at full capacity.) I went home, my dog honestly was more chill than I was, and I just tried to wait patiently for our turn at the spot in Berkeley. At hour 4.5 I called to check the status of our spot in line and they said it was still 4-6hrs from that time. I immediately call all the other hospitals I haven't already tried and get ahold of VEG. I tell them the situation about my doubled wait time in Berkeley, and they tell me to come on down to San Ramon. I hop in my car immediately. Get down there around 10pm, check-in process is quick, woman at the front is so kind, other deffffinitely more severe cases come in after us (totally understandable... I mean, he wasn't attacked by a wild boar or anything... sending my love and good healing vibes to that dog, by the way)! Everyone that works there seems happy and friendly and they clearly want to help us pet owners feel comfortable despite being there for an emergency. (Also, it felt so comforting to be able to be in there with Hamilton and not be waiting in the car away from him. I could cuddle him. Talk to other pet owners going through tough times. And it honestly helped the time pass... even getting a chance to watch them care for other pets before they got to Hamilton made me feel so at ease.) We wait for about 1hr 45min and I go to the front to see if I can take my dog on a walk, but I clarify I will not do that if we happen to be next in line. Well, lucky for me, a doctor hears me and is like, what's going on with your little guy? I tell him, and also let him know I think at this point he just needs antibiotics because it has started scabbing and looks better and it's been 7+ hours since the incident. He responds with... I came in on last Saturday with my 5 year old Guinea Pig named Dash who was dying in my arms. The doctors at Veg took her in as a Stat patient and were so kind and compassionate. They let me stay with her as Dr. Margaret Powell worked on her. Dr. Powell is an absolute rockstar and she did everything in her power to save my little Guinea pig's life. In the end, Dash succumbed to her illness and we had to make the decision to put her down. Dr. Powell and the whole staff at Veg were there with me every step of the way and they helped me to make the final compassionate decision for Dash. I will absolutely be coming back if my other two Guinea pigs have any emergencies and for all of my animals! Thank you Dr Powell and everyone at Veg! read more

This ER for pets in San Ramon is THE best Vetrinary Hospital I have ever been to in 40 years of having dogs. They allowed us into the large, open exam room filled with stainless steel exam tables, where we were able to stay with our sick dog plus our other 2 small dogs during every exam and diagnostic test. The immediately found the problem by X-ray and physical exam, recommended the surgery plus alternate options. We chose to have then do the surgery ASAP despite possible higher charges for ER Vet services. During the 31/2 hours we waited, during which more diagnostic tests were administered, staff offered us coffee, tea, water, snacks and plenty of Kleenex. They brought snacks and water for our other 2 dogs. When I had my crying bouts, the Vet Techs came over to comfort me, offer water and more Kleenex. I only wish they could be our regular Vet. The Vet and staff gave Tonka a very thorough and effective surgery, and called 5 hours later to pick up our sweet doggie. The estimate was lowered by $400 which also pleaded me. The fact we were able to stay with our distressed and sick dog the entire time meant everything to us. They are professional, kind, truly caring, and very skilled. read more

Our dog suddenly would not eat or drink. We were able to get her in to VCA and discovered she had a pacifier in her belly and they said they did not have the "capacity" to do the surgery. On a busy Fourth of July weekend, we called 20+ vets in the sacramento region to have a surgery performed and every one turned us away. We found VEG and figured we'd give it a shot (even though it was 1.5 hours away). We spoke to Dr Powell and she said that she could do an endoscopy and surgery if necessary if we made our way there. We made our trip down to San Ramon and when we got there we were in awe of the open concept. It was amazing to be able to see how our baby was be treating by the vets. Dr Powell, Marlena, and Olivia were absolutely amazing (as well as every staff we encountered working that night). We ended up having to do surgery which was scary, but the entire team at VEG were so educated, did not make us feel rushed, and really took care of our girl. Turns out our girl had multiple pacifiers in her belly that Dr Powell pulled out. We were in awe! The fact that they took us in as an emergency on Fourth of July weekend and saved our girls life is truly amazing and we are so grateful and thankful for Dr Powell and the entire VEG team. They saved an important member of our family and treated us with amazing care and service along the way. We asked if they accepted regular vet services and unfortunately it's only on emergency basis. If not we would be coming to them on a regular basis. The care that was provided to our baby and us was EXCEPTIONAL. We cannot thank Dr Powell & the entire VEG staff as they made the impossible happen and saved our girls life. This has been the most amazing veterinary experience we have had thus far. It has been almost 1 week since surgery and our girl is recovering beautifully, which is a testament to the care provided by the team, and especially the surgical skills of Dr Powell. I had called ahead to see what the wait time was for a euthanization and they said I had 2 clients in front of me. They texted me a link to fill out beforehand with vet info, etc. That made things easier and more efficient. I get there and there was no wait. My family of 3 and myself were roomed immediately. The room was so comfortable and didn't feel like a vet office. The couch was comfortable and fit my whole family with my pup. The staff was very empathetic and took their time with everything and let us take our time with the painful process as we needed:) Here are the reasons I give it a 4: -I asked the receptionist if there was a discount for employees who worked in a vet hospital and she said she would look into it. I looked at the final bill and there was no discounts applied and she didn't answer my question. Just gave me the link to the bill. It wasn't until a couple days later that I was able to call back. The manager there was great and I explained the situation to him and he refunded me part of the visit. -When you are euthanizing your pet, you are having all sorts of facial body liquids come out (won't explain that more for image sake lol) and aren't focused on keeping your masks on, sorry. We were all balling and kissing our dog...as soon as the dr came in, she told us to pull up our masks. You really need to be more sympathetic of the situation and less concerned with mask wearing! -We decided to go with a private cremation(getting the ashes back) and I asked the woman if we could decide on the text later. She said sure and we felt rushed to put the second line on. I work at a vet and recognized the company on the pin pad because we use it too. We always tell clients if they need more time, they can contact the company which she should've done...people are grieving and shouldn't be forced to decide right there and then for an urn. I also found out through the urn company which I contacted later that they offer a paw print WITH the urn order. I didn't know that because again, checkout process was very rushed and not explained with what's in it, etc. Don't think these were deterrents to go here. The staff was great otherwise and very soothing with words and empathetic otherwise. We chose here because of the room choice. I know Sage would be a normal room with a steel table. One week ago, I brought my perfect 9-month-old kitten, ESMERALDA, into VEG. She had had an abscess on her flank that my dear veterinarian friend had lanced a few days before. The area was still hard and raised after five days of antibiotics, so she suggested I take her in for more tests. A few hours later, after I arrived home with my kitten in her carrier, I opened it up to find her DEAD, with foam coming from her mouth, covered in feces, and with a huge, 4-inch incision on her flank that was still bleeding. I immediately called the vet, DR. MARGARET POWELL, at VEG. Her response was hideous. She was cold, made a robot non-apology ("I'm sorry that happened to you"), and suggested I take her to the closest vet (VEG is 30 minutes from my house). I asked her where to go, and she said OAK VET, a more local ER pet hospital. I also asked her if she could call ahead so they would know we were on our way in asap. I was still hopeful that my kitten's pulse was very slow and her life could be saved. DR. POWELL said she couldn't call the other vet to let them know we were on our way, but she could give me the number. I have never had a such an unempathetic experience with a veterinarian in my 30 years of caring for pets. My dear friend, the veterinarian, came over immediately and confirmed Esmeralda's death. My children, my husband, and I were and are all heartbroken. My husband called DR. POWELL to discover what she thought might have gone wrong. He said she was flat and cold, and it felt like her condolences were rote. I have rescued cats in Istanbul, Mexico, the Caribbean, and rural and urban America. I also help rescue dogs, and I've fostered many cats and kittens. I've trapped ferals for spay and found good homes for cats with difficult medical conditions. I couldn't be able to help in the way that I have been without the constant valiant efforts of veterinarians around the world who work tirelessly and compassionately and at great emotional sacrifice. I also trust vets, I trusted DR. POWELL, and I trusted VEG. Please don't make the same mistake. MARGARET POWELL seems to have a personality unsuited to her profession. Either she has empathy but can't show it, or she has none and will have to learn to pretend to have it. Either way, she should not be client (human) facing. Moreover, why would a kitten go on for a routine appointment and leave still bleeding, in pain, and further sedated? Why was she not given a blood test before the operation to look for infection? Why was the incision 4 inches long? Why was she released to me when she was still in pain and required further pain medicine? Why was she released while she was still bleeding? Why did the butchering that led to my cat's death occur over 1.5 hours when I was told the whole process would be 3 hours long? My guess is that Dr. MARGARET POWELL rushed and cleared my kitten for release for the same reason that she was cruel over the phone: she did not really care if Esmeralda lived or died. Six months ago, I found Esmeralda outside of Harris Ranch on our way home from Los Angeles. She ran right up to us. I've had so many cats, but Esmeralda was pure magic. I thought I could give her a long, happy life. But she would have lived longer if I had left her in the feral cat colony at Harris Ranch. A veterinarian without skill or empathy is a hazard to the animals she is entrusted to and the businesses that employ them. We will never go to VEG again, nor will anybody we know. read more

Hands down the most excellent experience my husband and I have had at a vet in an otherwise stressful situation. Our pup, Amos, was limping, and we called around to various pet hospitals, and our go-to in Oakland was 5-6 hour wait and we'd have to wait outside in our car due to covid restrictions. They recommended VEG and I could not be happier that I called. They told me to bring him in and they'd be able to see him within an hour. We arrived, they gave me a quick link to sign up, and we brought Amos in. My husband carried him but they saw us outside and offered to help. We were brought to a room with a TV and coffee/waters/cookies and were seen by a nurse within the first 20 minutes. Even the bathrooms are nice in this place. lol. It only took an additional 20 minutes for a doctor to see us, and that was with an emergency run-over car situation going on in the background! Every single place we have ever gone o with our pitbull we have felt kind of judged or discriminated against- either because they didn't know how to handle the breed or their preconceived notions. Every single person at that facility treated Amos with lots of care and empathy and were super patient and not afraid of him. At the end of the appointment, the doctor explained the ACL tear, showed us the Xrays (which vets have NEVER done with us before), and helped us understand what to do next. She was patient and answered all of our questions. My only wish is that they had a regular vet here because if they did, I would definitely switch veterianans. I hope I don't have any more emergencies with Amos in the near future but if I do, this will be my go to place!! read more

The best worst experience. We called ahead and got registered. Walked in and they took us right to an exam table. A Dr came over right away and began examining our very sick Guinea pig. She explained all of our options in a non judgmental way. In the end they were not able to save our girl but they showed so much compassion and care. It was awful to lose our girl so suddenly but they made her comfortable and I felt like we did all we could. Last night at 2 AM we took our 13-year-old cat to VEG. We were greeted by Anna at the front door, who got us to a room where our Smoke could explore while we waited - and brought us coffee and water. Through the door we could see the excellent staff like Jeanna and Layla helping other patients in their open-plan surgery. They came in and took Smoke's vitals, with kindly care. Then Dr. Kate did a careful workup on Smoke's eye problem. We got far more expertise than we expected at 2 AM, and we brought Smoke home with a number of meds. He is better today. They were professional, kind, and gentle; and they were high-toned and cheerful throughout - that helps a lot when you are worried about your pet. Yes, we were there a long time as urgent emergencies came it. We are glad we went to VEG nonetheless. read more

We took our Golden here for the first time early this morning. He had an upset stomach for a long period of time and the staff here were so amazing with him. Right from when I first called, to front desk and everyone inside, we had the best care and help needed.
