Horrendous! I recently moved to the Dallas area to attend graduate school, and my boyfriend reserved a Welcome Dinner here at Via Real this past Monday. The host greeted us with a wonderful smile, the only good thing that happened that evening. We were led to a table, and as soon as my tush touches the seat, our waiter appears to take our drinks. I hadn't even picked up the menu! That should have been our first cue that he was obviously hurried, even though the place was mostly empty. I requested that he give me more time, which I could tell annoyed him because of his expression. After ordering and receiving our food and drinks, we begin to eat. My boyfriend's margarita was still half-full when our waiter swooped over us like some vulture and snapped his drink away without asking, leaving my boyfriend bewildered. He had to order another one to replace the first. WTH? Then, someone else came over and tried to take my mother's plate of food, while she was still eating! Unbelievable. But, it's not over yet. Oh no, it gets worse. My family insists on having dessert to finish the evening in a pleasant way. How could dessert possibly go wrong? Well, having a disgusting hair embedded in your caramel pecan cheesecake would certainly do the trick. And like our entire experience that evening, our rushed waiter brought the check as he served us the dessert. I had still not realized that a nasty surprise waited for me in my dessert, so my mother already paid and tipped him. He was ever so happy and eager to swoop over and take the payment. When I finally saw the hair and my boyfriend alerted our waiter by waving, he looked at my boyfriend and completely ignored him. He disappeared into the back never to be seen again. If Via Real wants to remain in business a competent, patient staff needs to be trained and hired. To be in food service requires you to serve others. Our waiter was a shady man who should not be in the service field. I did not feel welcomed here, and I'll be sure to tell family and friends to stay very far away from this place. read more

My wife and her family have been coming to this restaurant since the mid-90s. My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for over 11 years. We have never had bad service except for tonight. The waiter, Riguel, was extremely condescending to my wife. My wife had to ask other servers for water, napkins, to fix an order,...he even snapped at my wife while presenting the desserts. We had a Birthday lunch here with family. The food was fabulous. The Chicken Monterray was very flavorful and was a lovely presentation. Mahi Mahi was great as was the Shrimp with grilled vegetables. The staff is very kind and attentive. This is a Sante Fe style eatery and the ambiance with white table cloth is quite appealing. The chef is very talented and has a passion for food. Solid menu but an overbearing server took points (stars) away from the review. Went here tonight for a team dinner based on solid past dining experience. This place has been around for some time and established itself as a solid, consistent venue with good food and well intentioned service. With the exception of a "watery" black bean dip appetizers were well received: -Shrimp quesadilla -Guacamole -Black bean dip (had to be remade, but they did rally to make it better) -brisket taquito STAR performer Main courses were respectable. I had the shrimp diavalo which was surprisingly bland. It was fine, but I ordered it expecting some kind of "heat", alas that was not to be. Everything was really well presented though, they plate thoughtfully and with care. The waiter could not stop himself from overselling the menu to the point of being pretty annoying. A simple question about "how a side was prepared" launched him into a discussion of everything he likes and recommends on the menu. The first time was fine - he can advocate for a dish or two, but by the 3rd + time we genuinely had to ask him to stop talking and please let us get back to our Owen conversation (I did NOT say that, someone else at the table did).... Last point worth noting, they are stingy with their pours. Glasses are small, overflowing with ice and have the minimum amount of alcohol possibly available to serve it with a straight face. read more

I haven't been here in a long while so we were excited to return. A++ For Customer Service Not so much on the quality of the food. Price increased (which I understand and support, we all are paying more for groceries). I just wish when I taste my food it is something to brag about. Something that makes me want to go tell others. Instead we have to settle (I'm here now..I'm hungry). Its the QUALITY that's lacking. Flies around the dessert table. I would rather see a electric fly zapper than knowing a fly has landed on my food. Our food was not hot and the potatoes were actually cold. French toast was out and biscuits would be nice for those not eating waffles or french toast. The omelet station (the guy was great) but the egg mixture wasn't even a egg yellow color. The entire parking lot is block for valet but it's empty because people are parking further away and walking. Again, Service they have DOWN. Door was opened for us. Hostess great Waiter very nice Omelet station welcoming I wanted to like this place. I was actually checking it out again for a bday celebration location. I'll pass. I visited Via Real for lunch one day recently. We requested a quiet area and were accommodated nicely. I was there at 11:30 so the place was relatively quiet. The waiter was attentive and explained several items on the menu. I opted for the shrimp quesadillas (half order). My friend ordered the veggie enchiladas. The food was delivered promptly. Our glasses of tea were never ignored. The food was tasty and priced about right for a place as nice a Via Real. So, 5 stars it gets. Service, ambiance and food were all first class. When we arrived I was rather shocked at how upscale it was and we were severely underdressed since we just arrived in town. But I figured they could overlook our fashion faux pas and I sure am glad we stayed. It is absolutely delicious and Salvador was highly attentive and provided wonderful service. I had shrimp fajitas, my husband had the chicken pasta. Both were simply delicious and for how beautiful the restaurant is it is very reasonably priced. Took a large group from work here for a team dinner. Service was wonderful and the food was delicious. Several of us had the Chilean Sea Bass special with cilantro mashed potatoes served in a hollowed out pineapple. Very creative presentation and taste combo! Would highly recommend! Note: unrelated fun fact I learned from a co-worker...there is no such fish as Chilean Sea Bass, it could be one of 2-3 different types of fish! I recently visited Via Real for a friend's bday and it didn't disappoint. It's tucked away by the golf course and mainly people in the area know about this elegant Mexican restaurant. The service here is excellent and the over all dining experience is what you would expect from a fine dining experience. The food is good but it's what you would expect from any decent Mexican restaurant. The cheese enchiladas are so good, I know strange choice but they are excellent. This is a great restaurant to take clients since the atmosphere and the service is excellent plus you can actually have a conversation without it being overly loud. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit but if you are the area give it a shot. read more

I'm sad to be leaving this update but my last experience at Via was a nightmare. We visited for brunch about a year ago while my grandma and aunt were in town. Apparently they were having some sort of fashion event and the host of the event had rented the whole restaurant. The staff were still letting people not affiliated with the event come in for brunch. They did not warn anyone that a fashion show was going to happen nor did they say people would be speaking through their sound system and singing. It was the most AWKWARD restaurant experience I've ever had. It was so obvious who wasn't there for this event. They had random families sitting in the middle of groups of people who were there to support the host. We are trying to maneuver around the runway to get to buffet. The speakers were SO LOUD and the singing...oh my god. I was FURIOUS. If you let someone use your entire space to host an event - I suggest you shut the place down to avoid making other guests feel so out of place and in the way. Or at the very least train your staff to warn outside guests that there's an event happening that they will probably not want to be a part of. It's been about a year since my last visit, and it was that mortifying that to this day I can't forget it. read more

My first visit to Via Real was a good one. I came here for lunch and we were greeted warmly by the valet. Once inside there was a bit of confusion with someone who looked to be the manager visiting with someone just inside the front door. From behind them, a hostess waved at us and motioned us over to her stand, which given the situation would have probably been more professional of her to have come over to greet us. Either way, we were greeted and eventually seated, after they took our name and then immediately sat us. I am always curious as to why, when you are being seated immediately, a place records your first and last name...Maybe someone reading this review can enlighten me as to why restaurants do that. Once seated we were immediately greeted by our waiter and we were brought chips and salsa as well as our drinks. The service was friendly, professional, and pretty on top of it given that right next to us he was handling a 20 top. I ordered chicken fajitas and they were good. The order was a bit heavy on onions for my taste, but it was all good. The people I came with all enjoyed their dinners, which ranged from shrimp quesadillas to enchiladas, to a variety of tacos. One of the real hits at Via Real that should be noted in any review though is the the ambiance. From fireplaces, to candles, with use of heavy woods and natural rocks and stones this place is beautifully elegant. read more

Attended a celebratory dinner with friends on a Saturday night. Food was mediocre and over priced. I agree with other reviewers that the cuisine doesn't resemble any authentic Mexican or Southwestern flavor. Bland. While some of the dishes, especially beef and pork were well cooked if underseasoned, they seem like they took some shortcuts with canned corn, cold bagged chips, jar salsa. All in all, its the kind of fare you could expect on a Carnival cruise or a big hotel convention. Fine for most of the older set who were in attendance. Its ok and I wouldn't even bother with this post except we had an exceptionally bad waiter. Its obvious he was very busy and the place was noisy but he didn't explain the specials well, spoke too fast and rushed us. There were hitches in the delivery and one dish had to be sent back but the guy was just rude. At dessert, I asked questions about a particular offering because the waiter ran through the descriptions too quickly and in a way we didn't understand (language barrier maybe). He snapped at me that he already told me what the desserts were. When we got the check, he had already added his 20% gratuity. Saving grace was delightful 80 year old hostess visiting with us. I give the food three stars simply because it's a little bland for my taste. This restaurant has great ambiance and service is always exceptional. The waiters are more formal. There is never a long wait even at lunch time, it's a spacious place. The atmosphere and feel of the restaurant is noticeable, you have to admire the place. The staff is first rate: your greeted by everyone when you walk in, the waiters are attentive, everyone is friendly and approachable. I tried the Sea Bass because I never had it before especially having it in the enchiladas. I wasn't disappointed even the black beans were good. Three of us had lunch here on a Monday. I found this using Yelp. It was highly rated and it was on the way to the airport. I started by ordering the guacamole and queso. Both were good and worth ordering again. The queso was very creamy. The chips they serve are delicious and addictive but break trying to scope the guacamole. They served the chips with three dishes of salsa so we could each have our own (and double dip!). Next we all split the shrimp quesadilla. It was delicious and the shrimp decent sized. This was big enough to be a meal for one person. I loved it and would get it again. It was just cheese and shrimp and came with sour cream, guacamole, and a red sauce. Lastly, I had the spinach enchiladas. They were loaded with spinach! I thought it was good but I'd try something else next time. We walked in without a reservation at the very tail end of lunch time. We requested a seat near an electrical outlet and they were on it! They found one and we got seated quickly. I really liked the decor of the place. Service was very attentive. I've been here a few times and have enjoyed it. The margaritas here are good. I had the special which was made with fresh lime instead of with sweet and sour. It was really good and strong! The queso here is really good. I've shared the quesadillas here and they are really good. They give you a good amount of meat. The chips and salsa are good here as well. I would love to try the brunch here soon. The owner came out and made her rounds of speaking to folks. Our waiter was on point. This was my first time to have and experience there. I loved how I never even opened the menu. I told the waiter exactly what I wanted and he delivered it beautifully minus the fact that some main protein... Wild caught salmon... Was supposed to be black and and it came out oiled. I was with another couple and I was not upset but when it was delivered, I asked him and he immediately wanted to rectify the situation. Their chips are home-made, their drinks are handmade, and their customer service is World renowned.
