Wish I had read reviews prior and to visiting. This restaurant has good potential but serious management competency issues. While our unpleasant experience progressed through the evening; (arrived & seated on time at 8:p) our party of 7 ordered menu mainstays and at 9:30p had not yet been served entrees. Our host asked to speak to manager who never came by the table. After it became apparent manager was not coming to table, our host went hostess stand asking to see manager/owner. He spoke to person said to be owner. Upon hearing our host's concerns, owner erupted with heated outburst denying host's complaints, offering no remedy or expression of concern, and took conversation to the point of calling our host a liar. (actual quote) Owner made no explanation of problem, or any show of concern or remedy. (not much of a fan of "customer delight or satisfaction) This service issue along with "just average / mediocre" food, made this dining experience truly UNFORGETTABLE! I urge serious caution to any people considering taking on this challenge. Save your money, and avoid a load of stress and potential risk. read more

Great Italian food, large wine selection and the owner and staff are pleasantly doting.

I have never had a more unpleasant restaurant experience in my life. There were six of us for dinner and three ordered the grouper special. When the dishes arrived, there was a fishy odor, and when attempting to taste the fish, they were virtually uncuttable. The waitress listened to our concerns and offered to bring other entrées. However, the owner arrived shortly thereafter and basically called us liars stating all his fish is fresh and we were wrong. He left only to return carrying one of the plates and eating the fish, telling us it was fine. He proceeded to yell at us and told us we were not welcome in his restaurant. The confrontation almost came to a physical altercation due to his behavior. To say we will never return or frequent his other restaurants (Toscana, Luce) is an understatement. read more

First time at this place, the menu is encrypted with a Italian themed restaurant. The group that we went with all of that different sorts of pastas and they all tasted amazing. My wife and I had dinner tonight celebrating my birthday.The restaurant is very cozy and romantic, excellent for a date night. The service is fantastic and the best we have ever experienced in Charlotte. The staff decorated our table for the birthday dinner and greeted us with complimentary Prosecco.The staff did a great job spotting the tables and making sure to service each table in an appropriate manner. We started with the carpaccio, which was very tender and the presentation had simple, light flavors that went well together. My wife had the homemade butternut squash ravioli with blackened shrimp and I had the seafood risotto which were both amazing specials of the night. I was given a complimentary birthday panna cotta, which was fantastic. I have been waiting to try Via Roma, it's new in the Waverly Shopping Center off Providence Rd. It's a beautiful restaurant the only problem is it hard to access if you need Handicap Access. I wish there was some Handicap Parking around it but there is not . That being said it is a lovely Low lighted restaurant. We had an excellent, informative waiter named Paul. I would ask for him by name ! He was very informative about the wine list and menu. He made us a couple of great Old Fashions. We ordered the Carpaccio and the Octopus. Delicious except part of the Octopus was a little tough but Paul rectified that. My husband had the special which was Grouper with a Picatta Sauce and A Lobster Risotto - he raved about ! I had the Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce. Terrific! Well seasoned and lots of tiny tender clams. We had Espresso for dessert with some Cannolis They were delicious ! We first visited during restaurant week and were somewhat disappointed with the service (the waiter seemed upset we were ordering the limited menu and no alcohol), but the food was so good we had to return. Brought the parents with us on a recent visit and everything was great. We had a wonderful personable waiter who recommended great dishes and wine pairings, and the food from app to dessert was high quality and delicious. Among the dishes at our table were calamari, bruschetta, tagliatelle (one of their in house pasta dishes), chicken parm, and scallops--everyone was satisfied and can't wait to go back. We ended with a round of desserts and, although not exactly Italian, the bread pudding is worth saving room for. read more

Let me start by saying that the food seemed to be excellent, service was fantastic but unfortunately after leaving everyone that ate a dish that included chicken became extremely sick to their stomachs. Out of 11 people, 7 had chicken and all 7 spent the entire evening into late morning in the bathroom. When I called to inform them last night the lady was very nice, apologetic and said the owner would be in touch ASAP. The owner never called so clearly he wasn't concerned about the chicken making people sick! I will never return, will share this experience with anyone who asks for suggestions of Italian restaurants and am grateful that the 4 other people with us didn't order chicken alfredo or chicken parm like the rest of us. We enjoyed this place. The food and service was really good. The menu is done well with lots of options that we would have eaten that are not what you'd find in a traditional Italian restaurant. The place is small and loud, but didn't keep us from having conversations. It's also a very new and clean feeling restaurant. The best part was the service. They didn't rush us out. First time visiting this establishment last evening with a large party. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. In terms of the food it was excellent, so I thought until I returned home and had gotten sick which lasted into this evening. Among our party, a half a dozen of us had the same or similar in terms of protein and each of us experienced sickness as a result. Italian food to me is unique in the sense that it's pretty easy to tell when it's done well and when it's not. This restaurant's customer service is beyond excellent. The waiters were there on their A game for every of our needs. They were nice and very open with what they thought were great choices. The restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Waverly community and the area was very active with people when I was there. The vibe of the area was energetic and very upbeat. However the food was mediocre at best. For what I was paying for it, it did nothing for me. I felt like I could have put the meal together myself and by no means do I possess any significant skill in the kitchen. Viva Roma you guys have most of it right. Your customer service is on point. You chose a great location and your staff and ambiance is great but your food lacks flavor and ingenuity. Very good Italian food. Great bar. We had a drink at the bar before dinner, they make a great martini. We had the Frito misto appetizer fried calamari with shoe string zucchini, odd combination, but, it worked, I would have liked to see a little more calamari and a little less zucchini. I had the bone in veal milanese, which was so tender it literally cut with the fork, came out sizzling hot and very tasty served with fresh tomatoes and some fresh mozzarella. They bake their own bread which was delicious. Our waiter was Paul, he was fantastic, very friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely be back. Best Italian food I've had since moving from NY. We just moved to the area, and tried Via Roma, as suggested by an Italian-American friend. The food was delicious, from the authentic bread, which was worth going for alone! , to every main course. The risotto special with saffron sauce was cooked perfectly and the flavors melded perfectly. We loved the citrus aftertastes on the salmon.... My husband ate every morsel of his veal (a good reward for him because he had just donated a power pack at Red Cross!!), and my mother-in-law almost finished her spaghetti Carbonara! Judging on the copious amounts consumed would tell you how amazing each meal was: We all ate more than we usually do because we just couldn't put down our forks! We all liked the ambiance, and recounted stories of trips to Italy.... made us wish we could return soon to such a lovely land... However, while here in Charlotte, we'll return often to this gem. I must close by saying that Megan, our waitress, and the rest of the staff, were the most incredible professionals in their trade that I have encountered in a long time. If you want fine authentic dining in a beautiful restaurant you have to try Via Roma. We eat here regularly and have always found the food to be consistently delicious. We have had the Filet Mignon,Spinach and cheese raviolis, Bronzino with roasted vegetable , Veal, Pear salad, and even simple pasta dishes. Fine simple ingredients prepared and presented to appeal to any "Foodie". Service always great. Fine Italian wine selection at reasonable prices. And of course, Tiramisu. read more

Lunch at Via Roma, Waverly. My first visit and surely not my last! Firstly, there's so much to be said about a conversational server such as Paul. He, alone, made me want to go back! His food descriptions and recommendations were spot-on! Pana casa bread: crusty with the perfect density for dunking in their cannellini bean mixture! Frito Misto appetizer: delicate, and so lightly floured calamari & spiralized zucchini. I specified sauce on the side bc it's usually tangy & chunky, which is not to my liking. But when served, their thin, orangey-red sauce had me asking for more! Tasted like home for this LI-NYer! My main course, pollo scaloppine piccata: thin, tender cutlets sprinkled with capers, in a lite sauce which had the perfect level of lemon zest. GF penne il contorno w.the piccata sauce was the perfect accompaniment. The portion was so that I brought some home to make me happy another day! My friend's main was Tortelli: spinach and ricotta ravioli in a sage infused butter & parmigiano sauce. Delicioso! Finite were Paul's recommendations. Tiramisu: pillows of ladyfingers between flavorful mascrapone cheese, and (4) small cannoli edged with coarse chopped pistachios. Excellent! This restaurant was utter perfection. I came for lunch with my business partner. To start we were treated very nicely by the staff and brought to a table right away. We ordered bruschetta as an appetizer, excellent, very light and refreshing. I had the best gnocchi I have ever had in my life. Everything was prepared with the freshest ingredients possible. I've been to this restaurant multiple times since they opened and have always had great food and great service. This time though I went last night for dinner and the food was delicious as always but the staff was not great.There must be some new staff there since I haven't seen them here before but they were not so nice or accommodating with our requests. The hostess that was there last night sat us down at one of their tables and we usually sit where there's a booth/table and when we asked the hostess if we could move to the booths with a table she just stared at us like waiting for us to sit where she first put us. One of the other staff members were trying to maybe see if they can get us the table we wanted but said the booth/table are all reserved. Our waiter we got was not attentive at all. He took awhile to come over and see that our wine glasses were empty and when it was time to order our food I asked for the Gigli their pasta that had shrimp, zucchini and tomatoes in it in a light sauce. I've had this dish before and have asked the waiters before if they can just make sure there's no garlic or make it really light with the garlic and they've always been able to do this before. Our waiter when I asked that he said no we can not accommodate that since the sauce is pre-made. He said I can try and ask the chef but I don't think we can. So I decided to order the tortelli then which was delicious. I was disappointed by the whole staff experience that I think it will be awhile until I come back here again for dinner. read more

BEWARE.....If you have a shellfish allergy. My wife and I ate here during Restaurant Week. While reviewing the Restaurant Week menu, we inquired what the Fresh Catch of the Day was. We were told that it was flounder on a bed of risotto. It sounded good so we both decided to order it. When served, the fish had a little topping of greenery and spices on top of it. About half way through, I tasted something a little different and asked my wife if there was a little crab meat on it. It was very hard to tell because the potential crabmeat (which there was very little) blended in with the fish. Because she has a shellfish allergy, my wife scraped off the topping and finished her meal. After we paid the bill, I walked over to the maitre d' stand to look at the menu again to see if it said anything about crabmeat but it didn't. As I was putting down the menu, a woman appeared and asked if everything was okay. I asked her if she was the manager and told her we were wondering if the flounder special had crab meat on it. She said she was the owner's wife and that it did have crabmeat on it. I told her the menu should have stated that it contained crabmeat as some people, including my wife, have shellfish allergies and that in some cases these allergies can be extremely severe. She responded by saying they couldn't do that because they have a different Catch of the Day everyday and that would require printing a new menu every day during restaurant week. Her response surprised me as the Restaurant Week menu is printed on paper and surely can not cost much to print. I told her they could easily say that the daily special could contain shellfish and to ask the server for details. She responded by shrugging her shoulders indicating to me that she didn't really care. We will not return since her lack of concern made it clear to me that they do not care about the health of their customers. By the way, she never asked me if my wife was okay. The food was good, not great. There is another option for Italian food in South Charlotte that I believe is actually better. read more

Last night I celebrated my 71st Birthday a a great friends ristorante .... Augusto Conte has done it again, now having 5 restaurants in Charlotte, Via Roma is definitely one of his greatest accomplishments. The food was Outstanding as was the service, and the atmosphere was as though I was at his home Barano d'Ischia. The restaurant being named after the street on which he lived. The Polpo (octopus) appetizer was just how you would get it in Italy and definitely the best in Charlotte, hands down. then we also had Caprice and grilled artichokes as appetizers as well perfectly done. For the main course we had the Branzino always a favorite grilled with Olive oil and Italian seasoning, over thinly sliced potatoes and Julian vegetables with a small side of pasta con olio d'oliva e aglio. and for desert the best Tiramisu I have ever tasted Via Roma is a MUST dinner or lunch destination read more

Despite the pretty ambiance and great location Via Roma leaves much to be desired. The service was lacking for the three hours that we endured. The food is middling and the prices high. Sometimes even if the food is average you can still have an enjoyable experience. However, the waitress' attitude was so sullen, like she was doing all of us a favor by showing up, and she was so inattentive, that the combination of all of the above made for a negative experience all around. Don't waste your time and money. This zipcode in Charlotte features restaurants where you feel like a valued and appreciated customer. No one at Via Roma made us feel like that. read more

We had dinner there last night. Met friends and had a beautiful evening and an outstanding meal. The ambiance was excellent, the lighting was perfect, but the food and service made the evening. Each of us had something different, 3 pastas and 1 salmon. The appetizers of soup and salad were SO GOOD and SO FRESH. Both couples have recently returned from trips to Italy and frankly our dinner here might top the real thing!!! Very nice Apersol spritz and great red wine!!! All 4 of us, totally agreed that we will definitely come back! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The service was genuine, attentive, not rushed, and felt like being in Italy. We ate inside. Yes, it is a wee bit crowded inside and a tad noisy, but the quality of the food so overwhelmed that tiny criticism, that its barely worth mentioning. However, if you are looking for a quiet, romantic evening, this COULD be a small issue. However, once the food comes, I bet you will completely forget there is another person in the place.
