I heard decent reviews, and it's near where I live, so we gave it a shot. Not for me. My wife got chicken parmesan and I had lasagna. Honestly, even if they were having a bad day, the food was poor. The chicken was not good. It looked like a frozen piece of chicken would look like, with a piece of cheese thrown on top, and hardly cooked. I'm not saying it tasted frozen, but it wasn't good. This is a basic dish, so come on. I had Lasagna, and to be fair, it can be hit or miss, depending on the place. This missed the mark in multiple ways. I would say it was mediocre at best. I stopped writing reviews for a while, especially when we were just post covid. These can hurt a business. Tonight was the second time we've eaten here, and I won't be going back. The prices are high, and the food is mediocre. There was a group of patrons a few tables away from us and they were so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. We asked the waitress if she could ask them to tone it down, but she said they were regular customers and there was nothing she could do. It was so annoying that we just asked to have our food to go. The other patrons also made comments when they saw that we were leaving such as "these people are so rude". On the way out my wife tried to talk to them and as I walked past them, they told me my wife was a bitch. This is the kind of people that are "regular customers" at this place. I've never been to a loud sports bar where they charge $40+ per dish but that's basically what you'll get. In fact, there is a Hickory Tavern (a sports bar) across the street with better food and better prices. That's the kind of place you should go if you want to be a little loud. Although there is being a little loud and then there's being obnoxious and rude! Maybe when Via Roma realizes that customers are not coming back, maybe then they'll ask the loud and obnoxious customers to show some manners (just common sense for most people). read more

We have been here several times when visiting Charlotte and it never fails to impress us. The food is outstanding - authentic Italian and the freshest of ingredients. Thank you sooo much to the chef, staff and manager Antonio for this delightful meal last night. My husband and I were celebrating our 8 year wedding anniversary (at home). We haven't done at a restaurant since the start of quarantine in the beginning of March. We were staying at home with our two young kids and wanting a nice dinner. We used a gift certificate that we purchased through a fundraiser with Miller Street Dance Company. The manager, Antonio, worked with us and was very pleasant over the phone. He was generous and we sincerely appreciate his kindness during these tough times! I did not want to give Via Roma five stars. I was suspicious of this Italian restaurant in Waverly, which used to be a hay field. We arrived at our appointed time and were promptly seated. The interior dining area was a little cramped and a little loud due to wood floors and an arched ceiling. When our friends arrived, we were served bread before our antipasti. The bread was good, but not stunning - same with the antipasti. The waitstaff was pleasant and attentive. The menu selection was fairly typical of those in this price range. Not much really caught my eye, but I did see this item on the menu, Mare - a seafood pasta with either red or white sauce. I thought I'd give it a go. My friends ordered whitefish and spaghetti with meat balls, all nicely served. Then the Mare with white sauce arrived. Heads turned. It was loaded with seafood, complete with an opened half lobster. I tasted it and... O.M.G. This is the best seafood pasta dish I've ever had! I wanted to be polite and eat only half, to not appear to be the glutton. The Mare was having none of that. I ate as much as I could hold and there was still more on the plate. Now I wanted to leave it, as a doggie bag can appear gauche. The Mare was having none of that. It compelled me to take the remainder, bound in a box tied up in a plastic bag. My bank account a fair bit lighter after two bottles of wine with dinner, I had to ponder what happened. We had a great time at a little Italian restaurant in an unlikely spot, with me getting an amazing dish. So yeah, five stars. It's romantic, the service was great and the food was good. The wine was also delicious, I had the Pinot Grigio. I think I give a 4 star instead of a 5 star because it is pricey and for me, pasta should not be very expensive. It was also a little loud, but it could have been just me. If you are are looking for that romantic ambiance and something a little fancier, it would be a great date night location or special occasion. We had never tried it. I can't rate the food because I never got any. Had a reservation and was seated late, and twice encouraged to just sit in the bar (which I didn't want to do and declined). Finally we were seated and sat for 15 minutes while several waiters walked by without even looking at us. They were fully staffed as well. We asked a busser to find out if there was a server assigned to our table ans still nothing so we left. Told the manager on the way out and all she said was "sorry." Nothing else. Terrible. I'm so glad I finally tried this place! The bruschetta and chicken parm are incredible!! Our waitress was so friendly and even busted out in opera in the dining room for everyone to listen. Visited this amazing restaurant tonight! It's quite the hidden jewel! We arrived right on time for our reservation. The table for four was not ready so they handed us each a glass of Prosecco while we waited. Perfect! Then the bar table opened up and we opted for that instead....great idea! Delicious food, but very close for comfort. I made reservations for a Friday night knowing that it might be busy. Upon walking in, the entire restaurant was packed, even the bar area. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side and there is no waiting area or seating (unless the bar counts, but all tables and chairs were full). There is an outdoor area, but it was so cold no one was outside. The hostess stand is right next to the entrance so it was tight. We were seated in a reasonable time. The tables are pretty close together so you may feel like you're intruding on people next to you. Paul was our server and he was fun and attentive, as well as everyone who came by our table. The food was delicious and my entree, the Gigli paired with glasses of a nice Pinot rose' was something I would love to order again! There is no kids menu, but they offer half portions which was perfect for my 11 and 8 year old kids. Overall, nice ambiance minus the small size of the restaurant. And despite being busy, we didn't feel rushed. If you love Italian food and pasta, definitely give it a try! read more

Outstanding in every way. I agree with all of the five-star reviews out there. The experience is great from the minute you walk in the door. The front desk staff is friendly and the atmosphere is elegant, but not stuffy. Paul was our waiter, and he was excellent. Friendly, knowledgeable, could point us in the right direction without being pushy. We had the risotto del giorno (specials menu), the penne, and the salmon. All were excellent - prepared perfectly. I'll particularly rave about the risotto - wow. The cannolis were pretty good, according to my wife (who is hard to please when it comes to cannolis!), and the bread pudding was outstanding. I'd recommend Via Roma to anyone looking for a high-end, quiet, but still casual Italian place. read more
