I had been really wanting to try this place even though I'm not often in the area. The banh mi looked amazing and I love the idea of not driving all the way to Argyle. It's cute decor, Vietnamese music playing overhead and amazingly friendly staff. Prices are high (West Loop rents I expect), but the sandwich size was large. The coffee was fine, but we wouldn't order it again - mostly because we have Vietnamese robusta at home and $6 for a small is pricey. They do batch their iced drinks which I don't love, but it's not what we really came for. Our sandwiches were hearty, but unfortunately didn't taste very authentic to me (I am Vietnamese and actually had a banh mi in Little Saigon last week). Lots of mayo, no pate that I could taste and the meat was a little bland. The cha lua was sliced very thin and again, not very flavorful. Heavy hand on the vinegar. I was disappointed, but I get this may be the Americanized version for the Midwest. We won't go out of our way for it, but I wish them much success. read more

I'm a sucker for trying new things and I've never had Vietnamese coffee before. For someone who hates coffee but has to drink it in order to survive at work, the coffee here was pretty decent. Definitely something different but in a good way. I read that vietnamese coffee is stronger and more bitter. It definitely was more bitter than I was hoping. I went for the classic iced coffee with condensed milk. I just added splenda to it and it tasted better for me (I prefer more sweet coffee). I want to try their ube latte next time! The inside is decorated so nicely! Even the owner was there. They have a section where they sell merch, a seating area, and a mini bodega with asian goods. They have pastries - both savory and sweet. I was very surprised having explored a lot of West Loop already, but I am ashamed to say that it has taken me this long to find a Vietnamese coffee shop! ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 9/10 Overall the place has a very pleasing aesthetic that is cohesive and takes traditional Vietnamese coffee and introduces a modern flair to it. I also think the owner drivers a red scooter/vespa that is usually right around the restaurant but I think that does add some special charm to the place for sure! SERVICE: 8/10 Service was good and I had no complaints. FOOD: 9/10 Ca Phe Sua Da - 9/10 - Iced coffee with condensed milk made in the traditional Vietnamese style that really was quite good. The coffee is different than typical coffee that you get elsewhere and I am curious enough to return at some point and get the beans. It is a darker, stronger coffee flavor, but that is right up my alley. It might not be your cup of tea (or coffee! ha!) but it's worth trying. Stopped by to grab a banh mi empanada on the way back from lunch on Friday around 1:30pm. Short line and a few people inside. I ordered an ube latte with coffee and a bbq chicken empanada. I didn't know my boyfriend wanted a coffee, so he had to order himself a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. When I was ordering, the person taking my order repeated my order and thought I wanted a bbq pork empanada. I said no, bbq chicken. Then when I went to get my empanada, he asked me again bbq pork or bbq chicken? I said bbq chicken. I received my empanada and guess what? I got bbq pork. If saying it 3 times isn't enough, I'm not sure what is. My boyfriend looked around and decided to get the drip coffee set and went about to purchase it and ordered a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. He received his drink pretty much less than 30 seconds later and he was confused why I did not get my drink. I went to the counter and said I didn't receive my drink. It wasn't the same person that took my order so she asked me what I ordered and she made it for me. So on top of messing up my empanada order, the person who took my order didn't even bother making my drink. Bbq pork empanada 1/5: It was dry and doesn't have flavor. I couldn't taste the picker veggies or the bbq pork at all. I added the sauce they gave and all I tasted was sauce. The empanada shell was a bit hard so that's why it was dry. Overall it was not good at all. Would not get again. Ube latte with coffee 2/5: did not taste like ube and there was very little coffee flavor. It was very watered down. Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk 1/5: very water down as well. Vietnamese coffee is known to be very strong and sweet from condensed milk. The coffee wasn't strong enough and not enough condensed milk. Horrible experience, would never come back. read more

I had the coffee with condensed milk. Airpot coffee tasted burned and stale to me. The condensed milk did not seem to add much besides overt sweetness. All this for $7. I didn't even end up finishing the 16oz. Given their location their are many other options that in my opinion offer a much better coffee/espresso experience. The only thing I'd change about VietFive is to have it open another location closer to my house, though it's probably a good thing that I am not nearby everyday because I'd stop in way too frequently! They have a fantastic selection of Vietnamese coffee drinks and this is one of my favorite places to stop in to cool off in the summer or warm up in the winter and grab an ube latte - it's a spectacular purple drink with just a hint of sweetness and enough caffeine to give you the kick start you need to carry on the rest of the day. When I heard that a Viet coffee place opened in the West Loop, I was ECSTATIC. I love cafe sua da and not enough people know about it! I was so so happy reading the story behind the business and the name--it makes me think of my own family and how proud I am of how far our community has come as relatively recent immigrants to the U.S. On top of that, everything was delicious and brought me a taste of home. I had the cafe sua da, which is coffee filtered using a phin (the Vietnamese way) which produces very strong coffee, with condensed milk. It tastes just like how my grandma makes it, and how she drinks it every morning :) Food: The banh mi empanada truly was an empanada with the contents of a banh mi! It had the crunchy pickled veggies and savory pork, packaged in a crispy shell. The pate chaud was my FAVORITE. It was perfectly warm and flaky, and each bite was like sinking my teeth into a cloud full of savory and fluffy goodness. The space was very clean, had large tables, and was very cute! So I have been here a few times already and I gotta say, I love it. The first time I came here was in the morning during a bike ride with my friend to try their ube latte (which was very tasty), but we noticed they had banh mi and at first I was a little hesitant having something like that in the morning....but ultimately decided to try it. Man, it has been a while since i tasted something soooo fresh and full of flavor. That sandwich is literally a work of art. I told my partner about it and was super excited for her to also try. I literally read about this place on Friday and went over to get an Ube 'latte' yesterday. Now I really like Ube, Black Sesame, Red Bean, and Matcha flavors and in the summer I seek out soft serve where these flavors are available. That said this drink definitely has Ube and it tasted like Ube along with its other ingredients - coconut and oat milk. However, for $9, it significantly fell short for me as an Ube 'latte'. For starters there is no espresso in this drink (or an espresso machine) and I don't know if that's almost a prerequisite of a latte to have a shot or two of espresso? They use drip coffee instead and it just doesn't do it. It ended up being too milky with a hint of coffee flavor. Now with espresso it may be a solid latte. read more

I'm new to Chicago and wanted to try the banh mi and drinks here. The ube latte was very sweet and had artificial flavoring; okay if you have a sweet tooth. Vietnamese coffee was decent, but not sure I would get it again. The banh mi took a very long time to make, 20 minutes at least, for a cold cut sandwich.. The pickled vegetables are good but there is very little meat and seemed like there was fish sauce drizzled into it for some reason. I don't recommend it and I hear there are numerous other places in town for more legit banh mi. I also got a donut but it was stale. Fair, because it was the second half of the day. But wasted my 5 dollars. Overall, I don't plan on coming here again especially at their price point. read more

Vietfive Coffee is awesome and such a great addition to the West Loop. Fortunately this coffee shop is steps away from my office and I can't recommend how good their drinks taste. The Ube latte is absolutely delicious and a great treat when you want something sweet but also a caffeine kick! The coffee with condensed milk is also fantastic if you're looking to stick with regular coffee. It's a nice concept and the coffee is good - you really can't go wrong with cafe sua da (coffee with chicory and mixed with condensed milk), served cold. And it's nice to not have to travel all the way to Uptown/Argyle to grab one - there's not many Vietnamese restaurants in West Loop. The shop itself is cute and stocks some interesting merchandise, including the coffee drippers so you can make y our own cafe sua da at home. The owner is very pleasant and seems like a fantastic character - everyone seems to enjoy working there. We did try the food and that's the stuff I'd skip. The empanadas were interesting but the fillings were a little dry. The cafe sua da helped to wash it down. The pickled vegetables on the banh mi masked much of the flavor of the brisket, and the bread might have been better served if it was toasted a little. Overall, it's a place that's worth stopping by to grab a coffee as you're on your way through West Loop. It does seem a little like a work in progress, which is always a plus in my books; it might be worth a try coming back around to sample the food in a few months - will update review then. read more

The ube latte is premade in a container, so if you want some made fresh then order something else. I think my friend just had the regular viet coffee with coconut milk/condensed milk. Price is definitely on the higher range for the size, but I guess it's the right price when you're in the area. I'll probably come back and try the regular coffee with condensed milk even though I heard the coffee isn't as strong as real authentic viet coffee. It doesn't hurt to try since I live in the area. This place is lethal. I just know that it's going to take all my money lol. I came here for a quick bite and coffee. We ordered the ube iced latte, the Vietnamese coffee and the original Banh mi. The Ube Latte was AMAZING it's sweet but not overbearing. It just hit on that hot summer day. However if you are more of a coffee lover and like to taste the bitter savory taste of the coffee I would recommend getting the Vietnamese iced coffee. You can never go wrong with one of these. It's got the rich coffee tastes and then a smooth silky sweetness from the condensed milk. We ordered the large Banh mi and split it which was great if you are going for a light lunch. I personally wish it had more meat. But the bun was perfectly toasted. It was crisp with out being hard and crunch. They use an array of pickled vegetables some that aren't on traditional Banh Mis but added such a great variety of fresh flavors and sour notes. And the sauce they used added just the perfect amount of sweetness. This place also just had such a cute cool feel and had a fire throw back playlist. I highly recommend if you need a quick coffee, a place to talk with a friend, or just a cool place to grab a solo lunch. Seating is small so maybe not the best for a big group. read more

I got the ube horchata which was super yummy, my bf got the matcha boba latte and unfortunately the boba seemed undercooked. it was slightly shriveled and chewy like gel not tapioca - not sure if that was intentional or not. ambiance was nice as there was bar seating and couch seating however it is a very small place so don't EXPECT there to be room to sit. read more
