I have no complaints about repair work done. Replace main control was,as far as I can tell, done well. It is the business practices that are questionable. 1. was given a quote, based on a previous companies invoice of $750 Max. Upon arriving price was upped to $1275. Was told because of differing serial number. Didn't make sense, but accepted. 2. when payment computed an additional $87.50 was added for "tax and shipping ". Given quote was for parts and labor was nonsense 3. Invoice had no company name. looked up credit card. Company was Appliance Guy. Lower rating on yelp! Also double charged $250 deposit. 4. Was told that subzero parts for another client were accidentally sent to me he would pick up. No impact on me, but ....??? 5. Ultimately got $87.50 and double billing credited after I sent similar concerns to him. Be careful with all these ratings! It's a shame read more

So when my ten-year-old GE washer started acting quirky by leaving a little water after each cycle, and then about two weeks later not agitating or spinning at all, I figured my clothes weren't getting cleaned very well. Mr. Beardsley came by, gutted & examined the innards, and declared it would be cheaper for me to buy a new washer than for him to prep for a motor & water pump transplant. It's good to know how you stand with your appliances. That visit & diagnosis cost me $81.19 total. And apparently it's a brave new world of washers out there: After some research, I sent Mr. Beardsley a text asking if I wanted an impeller or agitator in a new machine, and he not only replied promptly, but told me the particular brand he had purchased for his own home. Cool. And if you're familiar with the 1968 Lucille Ball/Henry Fonda film "Yours, Mine, and Ours," it's just kind of fun to shout "Beardsley! Beardsley! Beardsley!" every now & then. I thought in messaging with Viking and Sun-Zero Repair that they would be sending their own people out and not sending the job to another company. Wonderful!!! I called on Monday to see if I could schedule James to come out and look at my broken ice maker on Friday. He was pleasant and funny on the phone and said he do that. Friday morning he called me to see if an hour from then was a good time. He arrived within the next hour, diagnosed the problem in less than 5 minutes and had the new ice maker installed and was leaving with his check within 20 minutes. And now I have ice! As I waited for him to come by this afternoon to fix my gas range that had a burner that wasn't working, I tried to remember how long Mr. Beardsley has been coming to fix my appliances. We've been in Austin 22 years this week- and he's the only appliance repairman we've ever had. I distinctly remember him out at our old house while I was pregnant, so that would have been 2000 or 2001, but I am not sure if that was the first time. The first online review I left him was on his fourth visit, on another site back on 09-09-2007: "He has been out on three separate occasions to fix the three appliances [washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator] and is always quick to respond to our calls. I cannot tell you exactly what the problems were, but he can fix just about anything. He is a very pleasant, a handy man, and we are glad his service is around. His prices are extremely reasonable and I highly recommend him." He came back out for a fifth visit almost exactly a year later to fix my then 11-year old Kenmore washing machine on 09-16-08: "On Saturday morning we put in a load of wash and the laundry room became flooded. The water kept pouring out even though the drum was full of water. I turned off the water and called James Beardsley, who has fixed basically every appliance in this house with good results at one time or another. He put me on the schedule for first thing Monday morning, after being reassured that the water was off and we were not in any kind of emergency situation. When he arrived, friendly as ever, it took him about two minutes to diagnose my problem (the pressure tubing had slipped loose from the pressure switch) and to hypothesize why that had happened (imbalanced loads from time to time due to large towel loads needed for dog rescue). He proposed we get a new, longer pressure tubing so that there was more play in the system. He offered to come back in a little while with the new tubing, but due to a scheduling conflict on my end we chose first thing Tuesday morning instead (my machine was operational in the meantime). He came as expected the next morning with the new tubing, put it on, and my old workhorse is good to go! (If you have read many consumer ratings/reviews of new washers lately you know how great it is to be able to keep a good one working as long as possible. I am hopeful that by the time this one is beyond James' help the high-efficiency front loaders will finally be more reliable!)" We moved almost three years ago, leaving behind our twenty year old appliances to a place with two year old appliances. So we haven't seen Mr. Beardsley in a while. I had a discussion with Mr. Beardsley on the phone about my old failing fridge. Without any sales pressure or any commitment on my part, he volunteered to look up my fridge to get more information and get back to me. He called back and informed me that generally the symptoms I'm seeing are signs an expensive part is failing. He said he was available that same afternoon and would be happy to diagnose more precisely the problem in person for his basic service fee, or I could start shopping for a new fridge and save some money on this old one. My choice. No pressure. I appreciated his candor and advice, all without any money or even personal information exchanged. I read the reviews on YELP and had to have Mr. Beardsley come out last year to work on my refrigerator. Like everyone said, he was amiable, knowledgeable and charged a fair price. I contacted him again this past February because my dryer wasn't heating. He came out and found that my old dryer needed a heating element, which he carried with him, he said. The job took less than 45 minutes and I received a a bill for $225 plus tax. The bill was not itemized, so I don't know what the costs were for the part, labor and/or service charge. I thought it was kind of high, but I had had a good experience before, so I let it go. Additionally, we had purchased a solid hose and I asked him to install it. He told me he didn't think those hoses were good ones and he'd just cut the foil one we had installed already. He left the pieces and lint all over the floor, and just pushed the dryer back in place. Not that I think it's his job to clean behind my dryer, but I would have been glad to do it if he'd given me the opportunity. I contacted Mr. Beardsley again this week because my dryer wasn't drying our clothes. We had a couple of phone conversations and during the second conversation, I was sure to say that the dryer was heating (so it wasn't the heating element), but it was taking 3 cycles to dry the clothes. I kind of wish he had done some phone support as described in other reviews. He came out, looked at the dryer, checked the vent (he said he cleaned some out of the vent connected to the dryer) and said there was a lot of lint so I would need to contact a dyer vent cleaner because he didn't do that. I asked him for a recommendation, but he had none. For that and ten minutes at my house, I was charged $81.19, $75 for a service call plus tax. Now, it seems to me that as a returning customer, I could get some kind of break. I really struggled about writing this review. Mr. Beardsley is a nice man and he is knowledgeable. I had the dryer vent cleaner out today and one of the first things he told me was that the flexible foil hose is not up to code. He changed it to a hard one for $12 and was done in less than 10 minutes. We also talked about the cost of dryer elements, which would be $40-$50 max, which I had suspected because I had looked on the Sears website and didn't see any for more than $40 for my older model washing machine. That's what what finally convinced me to share my experience. Why didn't Mr. Beardsley know about the dryer hose code? People trust him to know about the safe use and repair of appliances. And why doesn't he itemize bills? Unfortunately, each time he came out, the work was less well performed than the previous time. The charges for services didn't seem as reasonable. James did a great job for us. He came out to look and repair our fridge. His service was prompt- even though we called him late on a Friday afternoon, he was able to come over very quickly. Considering we know absolutely zero about refrigerators, we had nothing to go on should he have told us we needed, say, a new compressor costing hundreds of dollars. But James simply pointed out the collected pet hair that had been lurking behind the fridge and sucked into the entrance fan, and cleaned the entrance for the cost of a service call, which was reasonably priced. We've had trouble with low pressure keeping the dish washer from properly cleaning the dishes and I called for service. Got a call back and James recommended that I run the machine a couple of times using Dishwasher Magic (from Target or Walmart) to clear the water passages of soap residue. My LG front loading washing machine started making a very loud clicking sound as the drum turned. I Call James to see if he could help but he does not work on LG. He did tell me to look for a foreign object that might be stuck in one of the holes in the wash drum. After removing the wet cloths I found a piece of wire from one of my granddaughters under garment had come loose & was stuck in the hole. After removing it the washer is back to working again. I had called 2 other companies & all they would tell me was they either do not work on LG's or I was out of their service area. If you need an Appliance fixed call James be is the best. read more

The week before Thanksgiving, my dryer stopped heating. I looked on yelp for a person and not company who could repair it because I find it frustrating to have to explain the problem to several people and then they arrive without the part. When I called, I talked directly to James. I described the problem and he brought the part and repaired it the same day. This is why I appreciate using an individual for repairs rather than a company. Also, he was very respectful and not condescending in the least when he walked me through the needed repair. It seemed a bit costly, though I am sure Sears or another larger repair company would have charged much more. I can't tell you how many times a repair person has tried to overcharge me or takes the attitude of, "this is more complicated than repairing an alien spacecraft so don't worry your pretty little head." Based on only a phone call (yes, he responded, unlike nearly all the others I contacted) my impression is that James Beardsley is the real deal. Works only on US-built appliances with factory support. Unfortunately, I have a crummy LG, made in Korea. I'd use him if I could get him! Pros: (1) RETURNS CALLS! (2) Listens and gives you honest advice. (3) RETURNS CALLS! Cons: (1) Slow with email response. I knocked off a star only because of slow email and the fact that I haven't actually seen his work. I know I'm only going to add to all the glowing reviews for this guy, but hey, he deserves it. I had a number of appliances that were old & not quite functional (just like the house itself!) so after seeing all the wonderful reviews on Yelp, I called Mr. Beardsley to see if he could fix any of them. He called me back the same day and we set up an appointment for that Thursday. Sure enough, he showed up on time and went right to work checking out the appliances (a refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven). Unfortunately, the dishwasher, while he explained that it was a "good little model" had a busted pipe, and the cost to fix it would be about the same as a new dishwasher, but I appreciated his honesty. The fridge was a very old model as well, and the effort to fix the ice-maker was also more than it was really worth. The stove, at least, he was able to fix; it had a weak igniter, and he got it up and running in about 15 minutes. He also ordered a new knob for me; it took a little while to come in given that he had to hunt for it on Ebay (darn these old appliances!) but sure enough, he dropped it off and now we can not only use the oven, but tell what temperature it is, too! Thanks to James Beardsley, Thanksgiving this year is gonna be a whole lot easier! Now I know who to call whenever anything breaks (although I'm gonna hope nothing else does)! read more

I initially had a hard time finding anyone when I searched on google for washer repair, so I decided to yelp it. Mr. Beardsley wasn't the first one that I picked to call, but he was the last. The first place I called told me that the labor charge was going to be $120 which did NOT even include parts. And they could not even tell me the possibilities of what could be wrong. The second person I called only worked in north Austin area codes, which I loathe the north and here furthers my point. When Mr. Beardsley returned my phone call he was very nice and explained the problems that my unruly washer could be having. He gave me an estimate which was almost half the labor costs of what the first place. Mr. Beardsley was able to come out to my apartment the next day with part in hand. He fixed my washer within 20 minutes which was good because it was my lunch hour. He was also very honorable with his quote even though he had been charged $25.00 more for the part that he went to go pick up earlier in the day. All I can say is amazing service! read more

He was able to locate and order the replacement, take the oven door back to his shop (as to not chance spreading glass around my house), and reinstall within a week of my call. He was prompt, courteous, and professional at every step. After a couple of months of becoming landlords and thinking how 'easy' it was - have the rent wired to our account, pay the mortgage, everything's beautiful - we get the call. Both the AC and the fridge are on the fritz. This was just when we started seeing high 90 degree temps. I called James Beardsley after finding out about the fridge and he was able to meet me there within a few hours, on a Friday afternoon. He was a great guy, very reasonable in his pricing and completely honest. In the end, the underside of the fridge just needed to be vacuumed. Apparently, we forgot one of our pets there when we moved (or at least our cat left a few of his coats behind). Having worked in the appliance world years ago, I know how easily a repairman could tell someone in a case like this that the motor or compressor had been overtaxed and needed replacing. James said that it was now running fine and to keep an eye on it, only time will tell but it looked good at the moment. It's been a few months now and it's still running fine. Last week my car breaks down and three days later my fridge decides to stop keeping things cold. The only thing I know less about than cars are appliances. Turns out the freezer door didn't get closed all the way so frost built up and caused the cold air to stop moving into the fridge part. Ok, so I haven't actually used Jame's services. I was having some problems with my washing machines (like it was spraying water everywhere) and I have him a call. After a brief description of the problem, we determined that my machine was still under manufacturers warranty. James told me that I'd be much better off calling someone that does warranty work. He came to look at our refrigerator's icemaker which hasn't worked properly in several months. He returned calls almost immediately and squeezed us in the same day even thought we stated there was no hurry. He called when he was 15 minutes away and was very prompt. He did some diagnostics, tried replacing the ice maker itself and determined it would take two new parts totalling over $370 for both, plus his fee on top of that. He advised us it would be cheaper to just continue doing what we have been doing (2x ice trays) and buy a new refrigerator when we were ready, even though it was less money for him. He does specialize in "American" brands like Kenmore, Whirlpool, etc so Samsung, Bosch, and the like are outside of his coverage. I'll definitely call again if another of our appliances goes on the fritz. read more

I contacted James Beardsley because I manage an office and my office's refrigerator was extremely hot to the touch. I'm so glad that I found Mr. Beardsley: he was prompt, professional, cheap and friendly, which makes my job easier and makes me look good with MY bosses! Mr. Beardsley diagnosed the problem over the phone and came out the day after I got in touch with him. I can't remember exactly what the problem was, but he fixed it quickly and cheaply. He had to come out twice: once to make sure the problem was what he thought it was, and then to fix the problem. His low price of ~ $250 included two visits, labor and parts. I was very impressed! In addition to fixing the problem at hand quickly, he also advised me to look into replacing our plastic tubing to the refrigerator with copper, saying that the plastic was bound to degrade someday and then I'd have a flood on my hands. He doesn't have a plumber's license to fix it, otherwise I'd hire him to do so in an instant. Along with his know-how and professional demeanor, James was friendly and personable. He really does remind you of a refrigerator-repairin' Texan Santa Claus, as one other writer commented. When I told him I found him on Yelp, he replied that he'd have to "set down with a glass of ice tea and take a good look at his reviews". James is great. I've had him out to several different properties that I manage after finding him on Yelp. No comparison to previous appliance people that I have worked with. The first time I worked with him, he had me get some basic information from the tenant on the stove that was broken, and send him a couple of pictures. It was a 20+ year old stove, and he was looking out for me to avoid multiple service call charges.
