The absolute worst breakfast I've ever had. 15.50 for eggs, soggy flavorless potatoes, stale bacon and the absolute worst pancakes I've ever had. This place having almost 4 stars I thought maybe it would be good, y'all need to step up your tastebuds if you think this is even remotely good. I also had the gyro and it was okay, nothing authentic. It had shaved iceberg, cubed tomatoes, and red onions. Then the generic meat and bread that they buy from restaurant depot. The sauce was also bland and needed some fresh herbs or something to give it flavor. Just supper disappointed I wasted my time and money here. Open for dinner Wednesday - Friday. Great prices. Good food. Go now while there are still seats. Oh, oh oh, Village Cafe, how I've come to love thee. Every Thursday morning you'll find us there for breakfast. And some Mondays. And some weekends. Yeah. We're there a lot. Now, I'm giving a 5-star even though, in my personal opinion, there could be some improvements. I'll go over those in a moment. They will make any omelette into a scramble. I do love a scramble. I don't know why, but they are very different than omelettes. They have turkey bacon and turkey sausage for the porcine-averse. I wish they had good veggie sausage because I'm not usually eating meat these days. They serve breakfast (and lunch) all day. Yippee!! The waitstaff is wonderful and sweet and professional (Jamie and Edna in particular, though the others are all wonderful, too). The kitchen is consistent, and that's VERY important to me. Sometimes on Thursday they can be a bit slow, but lately they've been churning things out at a good pace. And for a weird little side note: their chocolate chip cookies are practically irresistible. They're the size of a silver dollar, but you get 3 for a buck fifty. They're awesome. Their gobbler, I think it's called. The turkey sandwich with stuffing. Umm... Yeah. They fry the stuffing, I think. Holy turkey, it's good. I haven't had it since I went (mostly) vegetarian, but I remember it well. Well worth it. Now, on to my "suggestions" for improvement. Keep in mind, these are my personal idiosyncrasies, and the restaurant shouldn't be punished for those. 1) They should have avocado. I put avocado on everything. 2) I wish their salads were green. I really like the Greek salad, but, man, I don't like iceberg. Some mesclun or something. Arugula? Raw spinach doesn't count. 3) Again, some good veggie sausage would be great. The breakfast food was delicious except I was very disappointed with their breakfast burrito. The burrito was so small that it fit in one hand and my fingers could touch each other. They also need to work on their overall cleanliness. I've gone here at least 5 times, every time the menus are stick and the booths are dirty. Lastly, the speed/priority of service; other tables (with 2 or more people) who arrived after us were served before our table of 2. I prefer to support the smaller diners rather than a chain like IHOP but I would rather go to IHOP than here. read more

Added a star because the house-made hash was delicious, but everything else seemed to be standard-issue food-service food, from the watery coffee to the pale eggs to the tasteless toast. I found my new favorite neighborhood diner. Tried this place out last year when the pandemic began because our regular place was temporarily closed. Friendly and prompt for both pickup and delivery. The prices are a little steep but the food never disappoints. It's always fresh and plentiful and well made. We've tried the omelets, pancakes, paninis, and their hot pastrami sandwich (my favorite!). Their sweet potato fries are so crispy and addictive. read more

Food is very good and plentiful. Service is very good as well. The restaurant is small and can feel a bit cramped when it's busy.

I divide this into two reviews. The first being the food which, by and large is very good. It is nice and fresh and very well prepared. The second is the service. Simply put it is horrible. My wife and I went on a beautiful day and chose to sit outside. There were other diners there outside so we sat down and waited and waited and waited. 30 minutes and we were ignored. We asked several times for menus and were told several times just one minute. What was most infuriating to me is that at Cabots, just up the street, we were finishing our meal in under 30 minutes. We also sat outside there. Service is service and there is no reason for terrible service. Ignoring customers, oh yes the customers to our left had their order taken before we even got menus, is inexcusable. I'll just say this breaks my heart because I want to like Village Cafe but they don't seem interested in providing good service to me. read more

The place has been renovated and looks very nice. See pics. The place became very packed on Sunday morning. We even drove by Cabot's and Cook and they weren't as busy. The service was slow at first - no menus or sign of a waitress for a good five minutes. Afterwards, service improved and was quick and efficient. The hash, eggs (over easy), and home fries were very good. The Belgian waffle was good as well. They serve dinner and have a bar now. Check the schedule though - I think dinner is served only some days. read more

Just had breakfast here this morning and it was awesome. We thought we would try someplace new and I wasn't disappointed. We got there around noon and I was worried it would be jammed but we only waited about ten minutes for a table. Great atmosphere, extensive menu. Fresh fruit served on top of the pancakes-I had the lemon ricotta pancakes topped with blueberries and it was to die for. My friend he eggs and has which was also great. A find. A friend and I had a nice leisurely conversation on a weekday from 2-3pm, right before closing. The spinach pie my friend had was amazing, baked by the owner's mother early in the morning. I asked for the same thing in a second weekenf visit, but the truly homemade pie had run out. I suggest visiting during the week. Actually, all the food is excellent. I read great reviews about this place and by the looks of it, the place is always packed with people. I decided to give it a try. I went in at just about before they were closing( I did not noticed closing time). I got myself a Char-broiled Steak and eggs breakfast. The food didn't take long to come but when it came as you can see in the picture I got the last burned dish of the day. The home fried potatoes came extremely burned that I couldn't even eat them. The steak tasted good and it perfectly cooked. When I asked the waiter if they usually serve their fries burned like that, the waiter told me I got them like that because they were the last fries of the day and that the kitchen was closed. Now I am only upset because when I walked in they could of had a little more respect for me and easily let me know that the kitchen was about to close so I could of picked a better place to have my meal. I spent my money on a meal I didn't enjoy. And that is not ok. read more

One of the best traditional American breakfasts I've had. We went here during Halloween weekend so everyone was dressed in costume, which I loved. So fun. But it's the food that I really came for. The Eggs Benedict were perfect and I loved their hollandaise sauce so much. It's really hard to find somewhere that makes a good one, I'm usually a little disappointed but not this time. Pancakes were ginormous and delicious. Glad the waitress warned so I got a "short" stack of two instead of the full three. My husband probably would have had to carry me out from food coma otherwise. My husband's omelette was perfectly cooked and actually had flavor to it, unlike some other places where the eggs were bland and tasteless. I really tried to like you Village Cafe... But the past 3 times I have been in you just cannot get it right! All I asked was that I have a good size portion of corned beef hash with fried eggs and scali toast... It's really not too difficult...charging $12 for that dish should give you a heaping portion...at least elsewhere they do... I specifically told the girl I was given small portions the last time I had been in and asked that they substitute my meal above with extra corned beef hash instead of the home fries it comes with... I don't mind paying more..she assured me she had the order right and I was on my way to pick it up. I guess it's my own fault, I ordered this to be picked up... Didn't check the plate... And when I got home, not only did I have a small portion of corned beef hash, it was burnt black on outside and pretty raw in the inside, right next to a large pile of burnt on outside, raw on inside home fries that I specifically said I did t want!!!! To top it off it literally took 6-7 mins and 2-3 waitresses to get change for a $20, they had piles of bills, ketchup containers of coins, and were using a calculator, right next to a POS touchscreen Best of luck to you going into the new year... Pros: cleaner than most diners, nice floor plan and design, street meter parking Cons: 1) waitress unlearned in the art of service (example: The waitress nestled into a conversations with colleague and also the television show and rarely returned to out table to check in and take our order after we needed just a minute to decide. We waved nicely l, raised our hand, and eventually was able to flag down the colleague) 2) waitress doesn't know the product (example: I asked about the size of the pancakes before I ordered 2 stacks-- she showed me the size when her hands, mentioned they were small or regular size....when they arrived, they were nearly the size of a dinner plate. Huuggge! 3) lack luster service is costly (example: when stack 1 came and was huuuuuugggeee, I told the waitress that she misrepresented the product. She re-demonstrated the pancake size with her hands and was clearly incorrect... saying the pancakes were way smaller) I tried to Flagg her down bc she said the other stack was still being prepared--- nada. She never looked, was immersed in convo with other waitress. Other waitress eventually saw us waving. 4) I asked her to keep the pancakes, she said we could take them to go, I declined.... basically, she was unwilling to service the customer, acknowledge that she misrepresented the pancakes and return them to the chef. 5) when we told her we didn't want any to go boxes and were done, she mockingly took all the food items except the pancakes. 6) syrup is watered down (literally...) 7) I asked her hero speak with manager about pancakes. With some hesitance, she said she did. Reiterated that they would not remove the plate - sized pancakes (not tasty either :( ). Ok... we'll take the hit. Unfortunately I was unable to tip due to the lackluster service. People don't eat out for the food... they eat out for the service. You can get food from home. Very disappointing. Won't be back. Typical diner food, nothing to write home about. (Also watch out when ordering juice. They won't ask you what size and then charge you for a large even though the small was included in our "you pick 3" deal.) Keep the 5 bucks. You won. read more

My kids and I were visiting Boston for a few days recently, and we were staying in Newton. We came to this restaurant for breakfast on our first day and we loved it so much, we returned for breakfast the next day as well! The place has a real "diner" feel (i.e., not fancy but functional, with booths and tables both, and a counter in the back with an open kitchen behind). We opted to sit at a booth at the front, where the window looking out to the street is. We were immediately struck by how friendly the waitress was, as she greeted us immediately and welcomed us in, telling us to sit wherever we liked. It appeared that most diners were regulars and they and the waitresses all knew each other. The place had an old-worldly atmosphere, like it came from our grandparents' era. At least, that's how it seemed to us. Definitely not your typical big city-like restaurant. Anyhow, friendly atmosphere aside, it's really all about the food, right? And man, did it deliver! First of all, the menu is really large, with a ton of selections. As I recall, they serve breakfast all day. And there are a ton of breakfast selections. On our two times here, we ordered a lot of mainstay breakfast fare: eggs (scrambled, sunnyside up, poached), fruit and yogurt and granola, bacon, hash browns, toasts, juices and teas, pancakes. Nothing fancy. But we immediately noted that the service was prompt and attentive, the portions were really generous, and the food was cooked to perfection. My poached eggs are rarely...right. These here were taken out of the boiling water at the exact right nanosecond. The scrambled and fried eggs were also perfectly cooked, not too buttery, not dry, just exactly textbook-right cooked. The bacon, delicious and not greasy at all. Everything was terrific. It's rare that basic foods are cooked so perfectly, in my experience. The prices were very reasonable, and if we were staying in town longer, we'd have returned here again for breakfast! read more

I don't know quite when this little diner popped up; I think it was three or four years ago. I even think it might have been a pizza place once. In any case, it shares a wall with a laundromat (attention, weekend laundry warriors!) and looks pretty run down, with the exception of the nice new sign. Don't be fooled- it's nice and clean inside. They have tables to sit down at, and it looks like there's an area under the big menu chalkboards at the counter where you can order take-out. Or maybe it's just the way it's set up. I don't know, I've only been here for breakfast on the weekends. When I first started coming here, it was really easy to get a table. Now I guess the secret's out, and there's usually a line wait for a few minutes before you can sit on weekend midmornings. Service is good, people are friendly, the menu offers all kinds of breakfast combos and the coffee is good and hot. Food is good, portions are decent, prices are good. All in all, a welcome addition to the diner list. Someday I should try here for lunch. read more

I never have any complaints about this place. The service is always great, the food is above expectations in taste, quality and portion size, and the prices are good. The only problem I ever have is the lack of room in my stomach! Most recently I had the chicken finger salad. The crisp cold lettuce, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and olives blended perfectly with the warm, lightly fried chicken finger pieces. I got a large, and the bowl that came out was bigger than my head, and there was no skimping on chicken bites. I've also had the breakfast here. The waffles are light and fluffy, and the pancakes are usually 2-3 times bigger and fluffier than most restaurants serve. The bacon is crispy, and the eggs always good. I've never had any complaints- well, except for overeating! This is one of the best local spots for food! read more

The waitress here are pretty cute too. However, I was a little cautious because I thought I saw Chris Hansen eyeing me suspiciously from behind a newpaper in the corner of the room. They had an adequate selection of food that was on par if not a little above most other breakfast shops. Their prices seemed fair enough too. Their seasonal selections (I had the strawberry french toast) are excellent and worth noting. The restaurant itself looks like it's been there since the 60's and still has the architectural feel of that era (which is what I like). The waitresses were fairly attentive and nice so I'd rate their service an A. This is a gem of a place. Totally unassuming in the best way possible. Every one on the staff was an amazing sweetheart. Aaron, our server, was gracious and patient and helpful, even though he was obviously busy and even though we went in close to closing time. My husband got the breakfast burrito. It was so simple--eggs, salsa, breakfast potatoes-- but so delicious. I don't even know how they got it to taste so good with so few ingredients. I got the chicken panini with a side of sweet potato fries. Pesto with whole pine nuts in it. Fresh mozzarella. House marinated and grilled chicken. It was seriously good.
