I was excited about trying this place again after an experience we had about a year ago. We gone with friendsFrom out of town, and The food was so bad we ended up going to able baker after, as no one had touched it. I am no longer excited. First they have secret charges on certain items, like how adding Salmon or gluten free bread is an extra 4.25$. These charges are not written on the menu, and you only find out after the waiters come back, 5 minutes after ordering, to make sure you're okay with the surcharges. We then proceeded to get some food delivered, which was obviously not our order. Upon sharing this with the waiters, they became entrenched in their position, saying that the food was definitely for our table. Eventually we asked around and found out who the food was actually for. When we finally got the food, it was mediocre. The potatoes were inedible, and the omelette was overly oily and very undercooked. On top of everything else, I have a serious dairy allergy and made to to clarify not once, not twice, but four times that the potatoes and bread had no butter. I ended up having a pretty bad reaction, and the rest of my day has now been ruined. read more

I went today with two of mom friends and our infants for my birthday brunch. We sat outdoors and the umbrella from the table next to us fell on top of myself and my 7 week old baby's head while I was feeding him. Almost all of the patrons rushed over to help us and see if we were okay. Meanwhile, the manager and owner came outside to shut the umbrella, but did not come over to our table to apologize or see if we were alright. I went inside to confront the owner about his nonchalant and uncaring attitude, explaining that a 7 week old baby's head is not even fully developed yet and there are soft spots. He said it was an accident and ultimately conceded that I was correct and he should have made sure we were okay. I understand that accidents happen, but all I initially wanted was empathy. When I explained that there should be an act of good faith, which even the other patrons agreed should be the least that he could do to rectify the scary situation, he said there was nothing he could do. He was dismissive and condescending. Needless to say, my friends and I will never be visiting this establishment again. Clearly, this man does not have children and looks down upon women. It's enough that we have to deal with the stress of trying to search high and low for formula to feed our babies, but now we apparently have to worry about things falling on their heads and owners finding this acceptable. In response to owner's response: I find your comment to be egregious and ignorant. I had no issue whatsoever with your staff, so no need to apologize on their behalf. My issue is solely with you. How are you to tell me that nothing is wrong with my 7 week old infant or as you put it that "nothing happened"? You would only know if you came over to check on us or ask. So, I think you are in fact the one who "missed the biggest point." All I wanted was a genuine apology and just as your tone is with your comment, I received the same condescension in person. In fact, my infant has been crying more frequently since today's event and at times was inconsolable. My friends who I was with today even noticed it when we were at our older children's sports practice this evening. Thus, I will be taking him to the pediatrician tomorrow. Today, I did not mention that my husband is a personal injury attorney because I thought that was unnecessary, but perhaps it will now be pertinent. All I wanted today was some sincere consideration and compassion from you, which you clearly lack. I worked in the restaurant industry for several years and now I am an administrator in one of the largest high schools in the state. I am not some uneducated woman, which seems to be your perception. I have worked hard to get where I am in an often chauvinistic society. In a world that needs understanding and empathy more than ever, my interaction with you was a terrible reminder of what our society has become. I even told you that I wanted to resolve this face to face today and not have to resort to a public review, but you unfortunately left me with no choice and even encouraged me to do this. I also told you that we knew other patrons and witnesses at other tables. They know what actually occurred, you do not since you were neither there nor bothered to ask for insight into the horrific incident. Hopefully, the doctor tomorrow gives us good news. If not, I am sure we will be in touch in the future, but it will not be as a patron of your establishment. read more

I came here on a busy work day to do some interviews outside. The iced tea I ordered was delicious, clearly really quality ingredients, and I had a yummy cookie too. The gentleman who served me was super nice and friendly. The atmosphere inside is really nice, plenty of space to sit and lots of outside seating as well. At one point an interviewee actually called the shop and the gentleman brought the phone to me! So really great service. They also have a delicious looking menu of Indian food... I've never been to Maplewood, but I was there this morning and I was in dire need of a cup of coffee. I checked the GPS for something close and took a chance on the Village Coffee Shop. I was a bit lost when I walked in as I looked around for a Starbucks-like menu. I was in the mood for something strong, but sweet... Failing to find anything explaining their coffee offerings I simply went with a large cup of their house brew and a b,ack and white cookie for the kids (my son says the cookie was GREAT!). I will never understand why a place allows the people making the coffee to put in milk/cream instead of letting the customer do it themselves...it drives me nuts. So I think the coffee here is pretty good, but I can't be sure since the guy out in WAY too much cream. Either way, the coffee did the trick and got rid of my caffeine headache...too bad I was so annoyed at the whole too much cream in my coffee thing. Aside from the too-sweet lattes, this place gets five stars. The biggest surprise on the menu is the ridiculously delicious Indian food hidden at the back of the menu. Amongst dozens of different coffee beans, pastries, desserts, and lighter fare items like sandwiches and paninis, Indian food takes you a bit by surprise, but in my opinion it's definitely the best part. I came here with my husband almost two years ago and ordered the chana masala; it was just as good when my husband ordered it just the other day. I ordered the lamb rogan josh. The flavor was phenomenal; spicy, full-bodied, perfection. I know I've got some legit Indian food on my hands when my nose starts to run while eating! It was, like, level seven spicy! The only complaint I have about the food was the naan bread was perhaps a little stale, kind of on the crunchy side. I ordered the banana mocha soy latte and my husband got the vanilla almond - both of us thought they were way too sweet. My husband couldn't even finish his. The service was friendly and quick, and the wait staff was helpful when we needed anything. Our waiter even offered to take a photo for me when he saw me snapping pictures of my plate - so nice! I am constantly taking pictures of my food for Instagram and Yelp, and rarely does anyone ever offer to take a picture for me, so it was much appreciated. I have no idea what Roger C. was talking about. Since when do coffee shops have hostesses? This place is a CAFE, not a fine dining establishment. Calm. Down. Get the Indian food. Chorizo had flavor, had melted cheese, with two over easy eggs on top. On the side it had home fries they had different seasoning, compared to your usual home fries, were ok.Pancakes were just ok. FYI additional Surcharged of about $1.20 no detailed statement on receipt. Didn't bother asking because we figured some of the reasons why. Sitting inside and outdoors. First of all, I sat for over 10 mins with a menu before being greeted by anyone. Service was very hasty and not friendly at all. Food was fine, nothing special and kind of overpriced. This is what got me though - I ordered a dirty chai latte and my friends ordered a mocha chiller in addition to our food. On our bill, there was a random $3 charge that seemed applicable to nothing so we were all confused about it. At the end of our meal, we had to ask 3 people about the charge for someone to give an answer. The guy at the front finally said it was just a mistake and gave us $3 back in cash, seemingly annoyed at us for questioning their mistake?? So we walk outside discussing how strange his attitude was and how the overall dining experience was marred by that incident. Then the guy literally follows us outside onto the sidewalk and asks for the $3 back because he said it was for my dirty chai latte. He said that a dirty chai includes a double shot of espresso which is $3. So a dirty chai latte is a $9 drink here?!? I also never asked for a double shot of espresso, a single shot would have been fine, and I feel like they should tell you that your drink is gonna be $9 bc that's insane. Even the most expensive coffee shop in manhattan wouldn't charge $3 for a shot of espresso. So this man literally made us open our wallet and give him back the $3... like what!! You originally said it was a mistake. How do you not know? The whole thing was honestly insane. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Not sure why this place isn't rated higher. It's been around for years, I've lived in maplewood for 20 years and it's been here since then. It's better than the nearby Starbucks, the diner and other breakfast areas nearby by a mile. I've eaten here many times and never been upset with what I've gotten. I do tend to stick to certain foods because I'm picky but really I can say the sandwiches, breakfast stuff, smoothies and bakery are all fantastic. I really hope this place never closes. read more

What do you get when you when Starbucks marries an Indian restaurant and has a baby? You got it, the Village Coffee Shop. An unexpected place serving almond cappuccinos and chicken tika masala. In the Indie-esqe downtown of Maplewood lies this peculiar place. The food portions are bit small for what you get but hey, you can finish your meal with a made to order latte! I thought the concept was neat, but unfortunately, this place sort of missed. Our server forget the coffee and cappuccinos, so we waited 15 minutes before got it, just as the entree arrived. Black coffee doesn't pair well with this Indian favorite of mine. Was hoping to enjoy the java BEFORE the food came. For some reason we ended with two servers, the second was gracious enough to ask if we needed something else, though she could have been a bit more enthusiastic about her job, more so than her conversation with the staff. All in the all, the food was good but not enough good service or atmosphere to warrant returning. read more

I'm a sucker for fun breakfast spots. Take me somewhere that offers unique coffee drinks and original breakfast meals and I am there. They offer some interesting Mexican-infused breakfast meals and fun lattes such as a delicious mint chocolate chip latte among others. Service is pretty quick. Sit down and they come to you, food is served pretty quickly after ordering on a Sunday morning. Overall place was nice and upbeat, service wise not so much. Took an order for takeout and staff was not attentive at all. Ordered a spinach, mushroom, chorizo and cheddar omelette and specifically said no onions. Guy says everything back. Ask about 20 minutes later for how long the food would take, and again asked if there was no onions. Guy says no, whatever big deal I wont die. Get my food and eat it open the box, onions ofc and the chorizo they gave me wasnt chorizo? It mightve been so i can no confirm, it didn't taste anything like chorizo but. Rather tastiest and felt like ground beef meatballs. Food was alright tho not the best not the worse but it did have a lot of flavor. While I may have checked into this place only once, I have been here before. A few years before I joined yelp. I love this place for a good local cup of coffee and delicious breakfast. They have a large assortment of food. While they do have some lunch options, I have only been here for breakfast food. I really like their home fries, they have some sort of spice on them, and it makes them taste extra delicious. Probably some of the best home fries I've tasted. They don't taste like that traditional home fries that you can get at most locations. The prices are super affordable, which I also really enjoy. They have a bakery in the front, if you just want to pop in and pick up a cup of coffee or some pastries instead of sitting down. The one thing I will mention is that if you use a credit card, they do charge you an extra $1 fee. I really don't mind, but just something you should be aware of. I love this place, probably one of my favorite local cafes in the area. Definitely recommend! read more

My wife and I go to Village Coffee every now and then to get breakfast or brunch and to gaze out at the picaresque Maplewood downtown. The restaurant serves up a mix of regular brunch fare (omelets and waffels, etc) as well as mediterranean and Indian food. Everything I've ever eaten at Village Coffee has been tasty and prepared as ordered. The omelets looked pretty nice, and paired in the morning with a salad it is a rather healthy switch from starch-and-sugar equivalents. My wife says the coffee is really good, and I liked the buckwheat waffle. A few criticisms: The lack of an appreciable host/hostess can jam up the flow of things in the diner, as patrons absorb tables too big for their party, or are unsure of whether they can take a seat when other groups are waiting. There isn't any indication that you should seat yourselves or wait or whatever. In a smaller space like this one, it's best to have someone acting as the gatekeeper. The breakfast sides can be a little small. $2.25 for a side of sausage gets you one lonely, thin sausage patty. Bacon is two measley ragged strips. The prices on things can be a bit high for the quality of some of the goods. Regular pancakes are about $6.00. The syrup is served in little plastic peel-away packages and it isn't real maple syrup, only HFCS. Last, the service is gruff and somewhat inattentive. They're busy, yes, and there's no obvious managing person to make sure that things are getting done or that people have discrete jobs to do, but coffee could be refilled more frequently, or they could remember to bring the water glasses we asked for... twice. Each time I come here, I order OJ or a coffee, "and a glass of water, please." I've yet to get any water. Booo! So if service mattered to me that much, I'd aim for two stars. But the quality of the food and the overall experience are redeeming enough to put them in the middle category. read more

I felt I should update the review since a number of other reviewers have been disappointed. On drinks, I don't drink coffee, just hot chocolate. I believe their banana hot chocolate is unique, and I've never had something like that from somwhere else. On the main dishes, the best thing they have are their unique omelettes, many of which are vegetarian. They list some good vegetarian sandwhiches, but I'm so taken by the omelettes, I never order the sandwhiches. When you order most items there, you get a choice of three sides, but they only list two: (1) Salad - don't order this, (2) Hash browns, really great and nothing like you've ever tasted the way they cook them and spice them, and (3) Asian pasta, which is not listed on the menu, but which you have to ask for. One of us always orders #2, the other #3, never #1. As for service, it's simple. It's no Applebees or nothing. We know the staff there and we order by number. I hope that helps folks enjoy the food there. read more

We've been consistent if not regular visitors here over the 8 years we've lived here, but I can't get over how indifferent the service was today and I'm not sure if we'll be back. We walked in at the peak of Sunday brunch. There was one empty table waiting to be cleared. We had to ask someone to clear it, and even then, food debris was left all over the chairs, and a high chair and booster were left at the table. We were given menus but no one came back to greet us, get drinks or take our order until my husband asked after 15 minutes sitting without service. My daughter's pancakes were served without butter. My order came with an incorrect side. No one refilled coffee until we asked. I had to ask for the check twice. The restaurant market in these towns is getting more competitive, and Village Coffee really needs to step it up if they want to keep their customers. read more

I go here for their flavored iced coffee. Unlike other coffee joints (HI THERE, STARBUCKS AND DUNKIN DONUTS), Village Coffee's flavored iced coffee is flavored via the beans, and not sugary syrups. They've always at least 3-4 different iced coffees on tap. Their cookies are merely okay, but honestly they're not the draw for me. It's all about the flavored iced coffee. read more
