So let me be clear my family and I have been coming here for YEARS, we love this place. This morning while my 5 year old was using the bathroom, while we were washing our hands an employee came in, used the toilet, greeted us and promptly walked out and straight into the kitchen without washing his hands! The country fried steak and biscuits and gravy are as good as any Southern diner, but the hash browns tasted like cheap oil. I've never had hash browns where I could taste the oil. We had breakfast here. Excellent food and service. They have good options for breakfast, lunch or brunch. We ordered omelettes and each of us had different special requests (gluten free etc) and the server listened carefully and brought everything as ordered. The food was good but the service from the younger girl who was seemingly our server was insanely bad, she was rude from the minute we walked in. Great hospitality and service. You know the place is a favorite local spot when the waitress greets people by their first name the minute they walk into the cafe and knows their usual coffee order. I am new to the area but felt welcomed in this cafe. I was seated immediately and checked in frequently by my waitress. As for the food, I ordered the California omelet and blueberry pancakes (half order) and it tasted very fresh, especially the blueberry pancakes. This spot is the perfect place for a good, reasonably priced breakfast. It reminded me of a local diner I used to go to back home which made it even more enjoyable. The staff was very pleasant and service was timed perfectly - from being seated, order taken, coffee refills and the check being delivered. I ordered a half order of the California omelette which is served with hash browns and toast. The omelettes are full (4 eggs) or half (2 eggs). The omelette was cooked to perfection and came with a salsa that was fantastic. The hash brown were nice and crispy. My fiancé ordered the biscuits and gravy half order with sausage. I know he enjoyed it because he barely got a word in between his bites. I will definitely be going back and believe I have found my new regular east side spot for breakfast. read more

Village Square is a classic. Pre-pandemic, we used to come here weekly. My partner absolutely adores the hobo scramble and I normally get the veggie scramble. We rotate sides based on mood. Pancakes of varying flavors are all delicious, and sometime we splurge to get french toast as a side. I normally get the half portion, which is really the 2/3 portion, and it's a perfect amount of food for me. If I know I'll be too lazy to cook in the future, I get the whole order and end up taking either a pancake home or some of the scramble. The wait can be long, but they finally got a remote line app, so you don't have to wait right next to the place for an hour. Our 'secret' trick when it's just us two is to do bar seating, which is first-come, first-serve. Since there are often mostly groups waiting, bar seating can actually be pretty quick. This place during the weekends is always packed. Had to wait for an hour and half to get the table. But because it was the planned for 5 people I couldn't back out with the plan. I've been wanting to try Village Square Cafe for some time but it's taken a lot to convince me to leave my apartment in the morning. I ended up going at 7:15am and while not packed due to the time, there were a decent number of people already eating. I decided to get the Huevos Rancheros with hash browns. I've never had huevos rancheros before so I was ready to be surprised. That obviously happened since I forgot it has eggs and was pleasantly surprised to find 2 gooey eggs underneath the sauce. Just wanted to add that with online waiting list, it's now no big deal that their waits are long. Just get on the list before you leave home, by the time we get there we are next in line. I'm not gonna lie, this place had the worst French toast I've ever had. I got the strawberry rhubarb French toast. The rhubarb sauce was great but the French toast itself was not good.
