TL;DR: Beware of hidden fees, high-pressure tactics, and guilt-tripping I really wanted to love this tailor based on his reviews, but his lack of transparency and unprofessional attitude left me incredibly disappointed. I did NOT go through with his services, and I would recommend the same for you. I came in for an estimate on altering two pieces, hoping to see if the alterations could be done a specific way. He gave an initial price (which was already twice the cost of the dress) and insisted it's very good. I politely asked if my specific alteration preferences could be accommodated, and he told me to try on the clothes so we could discuss. Without me requesting, he started pinning the first dress to test it out. He never mentioned a fee for pinning--it was entirely his decision. Also, it wasn't a full pinning he only partially did the top layer. Then I tried on the second piece as per his instructions, and the price increased by another $100. I can understand the complexity of his work but needed time to think as it's out of budget. I hesitated because not only was the price unexpectedly rising despite me giving him all the information beforehand, but he also disregarded what I was asking for multiple times while discussing and constantly talked over me. I kindly let him know I wanted to get other quotes before committing. He was already showing red flags, but that's when things really took a turn. Keep in mind no tailoring was done at this point. He got angry, said I wasted his time, and pressured me into paying an unspecified amount. He felt entitled and said I should "give him something" for his time and started badgering me about my income and profession to justify why I should pay him. He demanded MY hourly salary. When I didn't answer his intrusive questions, he kept repeating, "You're a rich woman" without knowing anything about me and tried to guilt me by telling me how much his rent is (spoiler: I'm not rich, and our rent is the same, not that it should matter). Maybe if he didn't talk over me, he wouldn't think I committed to his full service. I was so baffled and uncomfortable that I just asked how much he wanted. After spotting a few bills in my wallet, he absurdly requested all the cash, but I refused and insisted on using my card. I kept the receipt, and I'm so glad I did. I could go on, but it was clearly out of spite for not going forward with his service and not because he actually had a set consultation fee. Throughout this entire ordeal, he dodged every question I asked about specific fees and costs. He never acknowledged that I had not agreed to a paid service and kept claiming an alteration price was provided when I walked in, so any time spent discussing afterwards is deserving of extra payment. By the way, I got the alteration done elsewhere for less than half his price, with no hidden fees. The work was good quality, so trust me you don't need this tailor! I was so disturbed by how he treated me that I later decided to stand up for myself and address it with him directly. I went back to urge him to be upfront with future customers and treat them with respect going forward. Unsurprisingly, he got defensive and refused to take accountability. Financial transparency and fairness should be a business priority for him, and it's clearly not. When I asked for a refund on the forced transaction, he suddenly couldn't find his receipt, didn't know how to operate his machine, and refused to check my proof of payment. Instead, I had him take down my information so his wife could "figure it out" later--but at this point, I don't trust him. I ended up filing a dispute with my credit card company instead. I also never received an apology for his behavior. He continued to be bitter and rude until the end. Here's the final kicker: I saw him unexpectedly ask for an extra $20 from another customer at the last minute, claiming the fabric was "very expensive." My teenage daughter took a formal dress to be hemmed. It's a simple black dress without any embellishments. The owner quoted $70 and had my daughter put on the dress to place pins all around the hem. He told her that it would be ready on Wednesday. My daughter called on Friday to confirm it's ready and she was told to come pick it up. When she arrived, the dress still had the pins and was not worked on at all. Instead of apologizing for the mistake, the owner made up an elaborate story that at his shop, he needs to have the dress measured again, which made no sense. I feel he thought he could make up a story since my daughter is young. Not only was the price of hemming excessive and the service delayed by a week, my daughter had to waste time by going to the shop 3 times. I do NOT recommend this shop. read more

My daughter needed a prom dress altered and we were very pleased with the results and ability to work with a short turn around. The dress was not too full but was floor length and double layers. This guy is a gem. First of all, this place is awesome, and feels like you've walked into a real old school tailor in Italy. More importantly, he has great taste and does a great job. I had a custom suit made in Taiwan that didn't actually fit very well, and he made it perfect for my wedding. There was no waffling, no "what do you think", he just told me the right answer, and he was 100% spot on. I also told him I needed a shirt, he looked at me, knew my measurements by eye, and handed me a shirt that was perfect. He tailored that as well in the price of the shirt (very fair). Bottom line, I came in here without knowing how to fix my so-so suit, and he told me exactly what to do, and completed it perfectly. On top of all that, he's like the nicest guy in the world. I came on a Thursday with 2 new pairs of jeans (same size and style, just different colors) I needed hemmed. I talked to Giovanni for about 5 minutes. He looked me up and down, took one pair of jeans, eye balled the size and marked it off with safety pins. I tried it on, and it looked good. Came back the following Tuesday. The store was a little dark and sketch on the inside and outside but there was nothing to worry about! This place is legit and Giovanni knows his stuff. I needed a romper hemmed same day. Giovanni Vitarelli is great. I brought in a Michael Kors suit I got from Macy's. It was on sale and worth the price, but didn't quite fit (as any suit does off-the-rack). I'm a bit of a rare size - 36S. I've never had a suit tailored and I really don't know much about tailoring or how much it's supposed to cost or anything. The entire fitting/measuring process took 5 minutes and didn't involve any of that annoying pinning or measuring of the pants at all - I put on the pants and he made one small mark on the calf of my right leg. He pinned the jacket up in a minute and the fit was immediately much better. All told: Mr. Vitarelli hemmed the bottom of the pants, let them out about 1", tapered the sides of the jacket and fixed the fabric on the back of the jacket that created a flat (no wrinkles/bumps) surface on my upper back (near my neck). All that work cost $100 - bringing the total cost of my custom-fit suit to around $300. Well worth it. I suggest going to Mr. Vitarelli for: a) great workmanship, b) a very fair price, and c) the feeling of getting your suit tailored for you by a truly nice, talented, Italian tailor. read more

After countless shirts and suits to be altered due to my weird should slope and slim fits being really not so slim fits here is my review: Price: Competitive just like any other tailor, such as Manuel's in SJ near Santa Row. However, definitely more expensive than the person that will do alternations at your local dry cleaners...and definitely a wayyyy better job. Quality: Here is where I hesitate to give it a full 5. I believe 8/10 Mr. Vitarelli does the work himself, otherwise I suspect it might handled by his wife, which doesn't quite pay the attention to detail that Mr. Vitarelli does. I have had only a couple of instances where the finished work looks a bit rough (uneven, some fabrics showing, etc) and when I point that out, Mr. Vitarelli immediate told me he would fix it no cost, now that is just great service and shows a business that is not afraid to owe up to its mistakes. Turn around time: I have never had a work postponed or delayed. Mr. Vitarelli finishes on time every time and even a few times when I asked, he would expedite it. This is one of the main reasons why I stopped going to Manuel's, I would bring something in and I would go in on the promised date and be told to come back 2 weeks later because he is too busy. The Man: What can I say...he is super nice and knows his stuff. You can ask for his advice and he will always give you reasonable answers. I've made plenty of web purchases and brought it into his store and I would tell him what I want to fix, and he will often give pointers of additional stuff I've missed or tell me things that don't necessary needs to be altered. A week ago, I went in with a friend so he could get a button up shirt fitted. I'm a huge fan of Mod clothing and suits, and getting nice clothes that are fitted is a big deal to me. This friend had been meaning to get some of his clothes fitted, as he is a pretty small and skinny guy, and I had convinced him to try to get his clothes altered to better fit his frame. Upon first entering the shop, we were greeted by Mr. Vitarelli sitting at his sowing machine. He was genial, and had a good vibe about him. My friend showed him the shirt, and explained how he wanted the sleeves tapered, and the body brought in. Mr. Vitarelli had him put the shirt on, and spent less than a minute pinning the shirt into place and making sure that things were how he wanted them. At first this worried my friend and I as we felt he didn't spend much time trying to get the fit right. We left the shirt with him though, and he said to pick it up in a week. When we arrived back at the shop, he was again, very kind, and welcomed us into the shop. His banter with us was hilarious! He had a great sense of humor, and he was very amiable the entire time. He pulled the shirt from the rack and brought it over to my friend to try on. Immediately it looked fantastic. Our fears about him taking "too little time" with the shirt initially were completely dashed.The instant my friend put the shirt on, it fit perfectly. The fact that he could take so little time to pin up a shirt, and make it come out perfectly is a testament to his skill as a tailor. The sleeves looked natural and well fitted, as well as the side seem, which had been resown, and then double stitched. It was so clean and in line it looked like it was done via robot. I will most definitely bring my shirts and pants to him from now on, and my first real suit will be with Mr. Vitarelli. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to get anything altered or fitted, and I'm definitely going to get my friends to bring their clothes to him from here on out. I told him he was a magician but he demurred. He was just a tailor he said. What I did not tell him was that I had taken that pant, whose origins lay somewhere in the early '90's, to be altered by tailors in fancier addresses than his and that they had all passed as too complicated.
