I had a great experience here getting a velvet cheongsam I ordered online tailored for an Argentine tango dance at my wedding. Due to the nature of Argentine tango, I needed both a back slit (lower) and a side slit (high), and the side slit for dancing is on the opposite side of the traditional cheongsam slit which is usually on the left. The store I ordered from only does slits on the left side, so I ordered the version with no slits at all. I asked multiple tailors and many of them took a single look at the cheongsam and turned me away saying that it couldn't be done, too little fabric etc. One even told me I ordered too cheaply online which is why they couldn't do it (excuse me???). Finally I took my dress to Ao Dai Bao Han in San Jose and Michael the owner took a look at it and said it was perfectly doable, and they would just reinforce the slit slightly with extra fabric. Some of the seamstresses there only spoke Vietnamese, but Michael spoke English quite well and was easy to communicate with. They had me wear the cheongsam in store and mark where I needed the slits. The price was very reasonable and they were quite fast. The first time I came to pick up, the side slit was actually not high enough. It was high enough as a typical cheongsam slit, but for tango kicks it has to be pretty much at the point where your leg bends! Michael was mildly scandalized by how high I was requesting the slit to be and asked me several times if I was sure hahaha But upon my reassurance they were able to speedily redo the slit for me to pick up a few days later at no extra cost, and it turned out perfect during my wedding dance. They also mentioned that they often do alterations and even custom dresses for dancers in the Bay Area, and told me I could go to them next time if I needed them to recreate a specific latin dance dress from scratch! (Unrelatedly for anyone who's wondering, the underwear does show a little during tango dances - traditionally you either get a leotard style dress or the exact same color underwear as your dress so it's not too obvious, and you do need to pin the side of the underwear to right above the slit so that the dress doesn't slide way high above it, which would be indeed scandalous! We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary with a vow renewal celebration in Maui. The dress code was all white. We did a mini tea ceremony for our parents. I wanted to wear an all white Ao Dai since I asked everyone to wear white (my original was red). If you have strong preferences of what you like, I would recommend having a lot of printed pictures and circling the details you like of each sample. I am more relaxed and chill and I just trusted Michael to make me look pretty lol. I showed him some dresses I liked but I kind of said I don't know why I like them I just like them. I said "beachy, lightweight, and I want a big hat." When I came to pick up the dress a week before the wedding (I ordered it 6 months in advance), I was surprised. It was heavy and I wasn't sure if it was what I asked for. It was A LOT! But then I wore it. And when I saw the pictures, I was speechless. I could see all the parts I said I liked, they were part of my dress. It was really perfect. This is how the process went for me: Call and make an appointment Arrive, try on some samples Show him pictures of what I liked He tells me how he is going to design in He goes to Vietnam Come back for first fitting 3-4 weeks before the wedding A couple alterations Pick up dress I think twice I came for appointment and there was a miscommunication. The first time Michael went with his mom to Orange County so he missed my appt. The second time, the alterations were not ready. It doesn't matter for me because I'm local and I'm also chill about everything since it was just my vow renewal. If you live far, I would just recommend calling to confirm the appt before you drive over! Overall, I think you can be involved in the process as much as you want. For me, I just trust Michael. Think I found my go-to alteration spot! Needed a next day service for a hem on my jeans and Michael was gracious enough to accommodate my last minute request when I reached out on Yelp. I highly recommend Ao Dai Bao Han! Michael helped me out with an emergency alteration situation. I had ordered a dress to wear to a wedding on Sun (6/14) that didnt arrive until Saturday (6/13) late. I didnt think I would need to have it altered but it was too long. I sent a Yelp request at 11:50 pm Sat night to several businesses to see if any could accommodate. Came here for a strap alteration in the past and it was a super quick and efficient process so I came back to fix a dress where the metal wire in the bra corset area was sticking out because the fabric was ripped. I came for a quote and they said $40 (which I remember because I texted multiple people asking if I should fix it for $40) and I didn't up doing it that day but later decided to do the project here. I came back today and they quoted the same project $90. I'm pretty sure I would remember if they quoted $90 last time. Nowhere else would charge that amount for such a simple project, you barely need any fabric to cover the wire. Needless to say I will not be coming back. Tldr if Michael gives you a quote make sure you have it in a written statement or else he will charge over double for the same project next time! EDIT: I ended up going somewhere else and getting it fixed for only $30 which is even less than the original quote from here. They even fixed some other broken parts for me which I guarantee Michael would have charged more for. Also saw your reply and you definitely didn't ask to see the texts because I would've showed you.. I was looking for a dress for my award ceremony. At first, I was planning to get a custom design, and Michael, the owner, was incredibly helpful in sketching out ideas with me. Then, I spotted a beautiful blue dress that was already made which he previously designed, and I instantly fell in love with it. The dress was a little small, but they were able to alter it to fit my body the same day! We had some trouble finding pants in the exact matching color, so Michael went above and beyond by sending the dress to Vietnam to ensure they could find a fabric for the pants that would be a perfect match. Made an appointment to look for bridesmaid and groomsmen ao dai aswell as custom bride and groom outfits. No one helped us. The owner greeted us at the door and we also showed him pictures of what we were looking for then he was gone busy talking to other customers. I really thought this place would be the one since its very hyped up... but ended up going to vietnam town to get everything custom made. UPDATE !! So now I'm a liar? You responded to me on Yelp, but when I came into the store you were MIA. Every time I tried to flag you down, you said "OK" and walked away. That's not customer service. Even after showing you pictures of my inspiration, you didn't suggest a single dress for me to look at. Instead, you dismissed me, got defensive, and now try to cover it up with an AI-generated response instead of addressing the real issue. This one star is well deserved. If you spent as much effort actually helping your customers as you do writing AI responses, maybe people wouldn't be walking away frustrated. read more
